There's no option on the notification bar to turn GPS on and off. My Nexus 4 just came in today. I switched over from Galaxy S2. I always had GPS turned off on my S2 until I use maps and navigation. On the Nexus 4 I have to go into the settings menu. Not very convenient.

Not on stock. Custom roms have the option to add it to the quick settings. Alternatively you can add the power control widget to your homescreen.
In my experience, leaving GPS on doesn't effect battery life. It stays idle until its called. Saves the need for toggling it on and off.
If you want quick toggles in your notification bar, you should try Widgetsoid app.

When I go to bed, I switch to Aeroplane mode=On. Stops noises from fb etc. Are there any widgets or buttons which I can put on my desktop so its just a single press to toggle it? Same question for location access come to think of it! I always have it turned off but need it for maps, sat nav and some other apps. Its fiddly to turn it back on again.
Thanks,
Jon

Not what you want exactly, but the power control widget can toggle GPS and data sync ( the two circular arrows), which would achieve what you are wanting and is already on your device.

I use widgetsoid and keep the airplane mode toggle right on my home screen.
Just google and find Aeroplane Toggle Widget, you can put it on your home screen.
So I discovered this purely by accident.
I've picked up my phone at night a few times and have blasted myself in the eyes with the light of my camera. It acts light using the widget to toggle it to act like a flashlight. Thinking my phone bugging out I thought nothing about it. But after the 5th time I decided it was a built in feature.
After much trial and error, I have these results:
With your phone on and screen timed out (turned off), press volume up and power at the same time. The screen should turn on, as well as the light on your camera.
To turn off let the screen time out, or press power to turn it off. Then press volume down.
Now I do not know how it works on mine but not my wife's note 3. I'm running stock Rom rooted with no mods.
I will try and figure out how I have this working, but any insight would work too.
Does anyone else have this feature?

I know Wanam Xposed has a feature for using volume up while the screen is off to turn on the flashlight, maybe that's it.

Well we're on this topic. I'm stock rooted on mje. What's the best way for me to add the flashlight function to my phone? I miss having that feature as I've had it on the last 3 phones I've owned.

The post above yours should do the trick. If you're talking about a toggle from the notification bar, I think it is built in most custom ROMs.

All,
Any thoughts on preventing car mode from resizing the screen to accommodate the enlarged soft keys and re-enable the Recents button again? I need car mode to keep the screen on while driving, but not being able to quickly transition from Maps to Google Play Music with a double tap of the Recents button, as well as the reduced screen size, is beyond annoying. Saying "don't use car mode" without a solution to keep the screen on while driving (read: not just "while charging" like the developer option allows) isn't a valid solution.
I've attached a screenshot of the issue. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried Android Auto. Google just updated it so you can run it stand alone on a phone. It would give you a simplified car friendly screen with quick access to music and maps.

I like the concept, I just don't like being limited to only accessing those select apps, I use lots of other things to search for addresses I travel to for work, driving 50K miles per year, so I'm in the car working (yes, stopped when accessing emails) and I hate having to disable car mode every time I need to multitask
Good suggestion, I am interested in the direction of Android Auto, just not for my main device at this time

Now car mode prevents me from seeing that a call is currently active, nothing on the notification bar, nothing on the second screen, can't hang up unless I use the controls on the car steering wheel. Need to find another solution using Tasker or otherwise. Screen on while charging in developer's options dims the screen beyond usefulness.

you're having strange issues, are you connecting to a head unit or using the phone alone? Im not having any problems, but i dont need to switch between apps. Also now that Android Auto works over Bluetooth its i can choose between wired connection(which doesn't let me change apps) or wireless is i want to use an app while stopped. As for the call issue sounds like something is triggering the proximity sensor, i had the same issue when i had a screen protector for a different device on at the beginning?

I just ordered the V20 today and intend on using it in Landscape mode while driving and using Google Maps or Waze. My previous phone Note 4, the screen would always stay on as long as i had Google Maps running. I never used the car mode feature and always had it plugged in while driving. Do you really need to use Car mode? Couldnt you just keep Google Maps active and access other apps as needed?

That would be fine for the times I'm ONLY using Maps, but not Music or anything else that keeps screen on while in foreground. If I switch to anything other than Maps, I have to switch back before the screen times out - and considering the power button is almost impossible to get to when mounted, that isn't a viable solution for me, unfortunately.

Yeah, this was the first thing I noticed\hated with either the V20 or 7.0, I hate that the nav buttons increase in car\dock mode. I use CarHome Ultra as my docking app and the only way I have found around it is to Auto hide the Navbar when I'm running CarHome Ultra and my Navigation GPS app. I auto-hide just those two apps from within the "Home Touch Button" tab in the Display settings. I can add shortcuts within CarHome Ultra to the apps I my use while driving: Etc...Nav, Messenger, phone app.
Hope this helps some.
That actually did help me! Thanks. I also use Car Home Ultra, which I love, but I had switched from 8 buttons to 6 because they were too squashed due to the nav buttons at the bottom.
I am sure other users must have noticed this. Functions on the toggle bar can be activated even when phone is locked. This a security concern.
When phone is locked, malicious people in possession of the phone can swipe the screen down and start functions on the toggle bar e.g. Mobile Data, Wi-fi, Torch, Silent mode, Bluetooth, Hotspot, GPS and can even put the phone on Aeroplane More.
This should not be allowed.
Is there a solution to this ?
Cheers
Sachin
Still waiting for a solution ..

U can disable toggles in lock screen. Search for it in settings.
Some roms have an option to prevent it, I know rr and viper os have it ,check in settings (disable quick settings on secure lock screen , as @RoboR1 said)
I've noticed that holding down the location icon in the notifications drawer no longer leads to the menu where you can choose the level of location precision.
Also, the toggle used to turn on/off GPS and now it's a global location toggle. I preferred the old way of keeping on the network/wifi location all the time and only turning on GPS when I want to.
Is the setting still available somewhere?
Nope, this is how location services works on Android 10
