So I discovered this purely by accident.
I've picked up my phone at night a few times and have blasted myself in the eyes with the light of my camera. It acts light using the widget to toggle it to act like a flashlight. Thinking my phone bugging out I thought nothing about it. But after the 5th time I decided it was a built in feature.
After much trial and error, I have these results:
With your phone on and screen timed out (turned off), press volume up and power at the same time. The screen should turn on, as well as the light on your camera.
To turn off let the screen time out, or press power to turn it off. Then press volume down.
Now I do not know how it works on mine but not my wife's note 3. I'm running stock Rom rooted with no mods.
I will try and figure out how I have this working, but any insight would work too.
Does anyone else have this feature?

I know Wanam Xposed has a feature for using volume up while the screen is off to turn on the flashlight, maybe that's it.

Well we're on this topic. I'm stock rooted on mje. What's the best way for me to add the flashlight function to my phone? I miss having that feature as I've had it on the last 3 phones I've owned.

The post above yours should do the trick. If you're talking about a toggle from the notification bar, I think it is built in most custom ROMs.

Sometimes I want to turn the screen off temporarily to save power while using navigation. Now when I use the power button to turn the screen off, it only turns off for a second, then pops back on. This only is happening in navigation mode - screen will stay off otherwise. Any ideas?
I'm on Orange Glacier with the latest faux123 kernel...tried fixing permissions.
Same thing happens to me. I haven't bothered to check though. Maybe it is made to stay on in Navigation mode.
Check settings in navigation app probably made so you wont accidentally turn it off while driving then have to fiddle with it and risk a crash

Well my bad I guess. It looks like this is how it operates stock too...I could have sworn I was able to turn the screen off during navigation in the past, but must not have been able to.
I have checked and no such setting in default navigation for screen on and off.
I was just guessing I have a seperate GPS and only use nav when I'm in someone else's car and they're lost lol

Same thing happening here since recent update. It's not ROM-dependent, and I haven't figured out how to disable it.
I don't mind if screen timeout is disabled, and actually prefer that, but in this case I'm pressing the power button to turn the screen off and it repeatedly turns back on immediately.
I am sooooooo tired of this.
When I had 2.2 I had no issue, but, ever since I upgraded to Gingerbread (2.3) the screen will just turn on out of no where while I am on the phone and a lot of times my cheek will turn off the call or sometimes mute the call. It is so darn annoying.
Is there anything that can be done to fix this issue? I am sure I can't be alone with this.
Odin back to 2.2 and confirm that it is software and not your sensor that has gone bad.

My wife and I have the same phones and she compains of this too. I never have an issue with this on my phone. But, she can use my phone and have this problem. She also said she never had this problem on froyo, only after the gingerbread update.
I've tried installing several proximity sensor apps that are supposed to lock the phone when you put the phone to your ear. But not had the luck witht them that I was hoping for. The phone will lock, but the dialer stays on top of the lock screen. You are only taken to the lock screen after you hang up and the dialer goes away. Please let me know if someone has a solution like this that works!
I think the difference is how she holds the phone to here head. I've noticed her ear doesnt complete cover the proximity sensor all the way. She also likes to hold the entire phone screen tight to her cheek. I've tried to encourage her to hold the phone a little different, but she would rather that it just work for her. She also wants me to restore her phone back to froyo. I hate the idea of that.

also make sure your screen is clean. perticaly around sensor. had a problem with screen not turning off when on phone once and as soon as cleaned screen problem went away.
Just press the power button when your on a call so ths seen won't turn on

Yes, that's a good suggestion, but that wont always keep the screen off. I agree that it *should*.
To test, I call my voicemail.
Putting my finger over the proximity sensor will cause the screen to turn off. Now, lightly pressing the camera button to its half way point caused the screen to turn on. Pressing the volume buttons also turns the screen on. So, overly gripping the phone will turn on the screen.
Next test, turn off the screen with the power button. First call to VM, turn off screen with power button, screen stays off while I try to press volume button, but turns on with half press of camera button.
Seconds call, turn off screen with power button, screen turns on when pressing volume or camera button.
I continued making a few more test calls with these same mixed results. Finger over the proximity sensor always turns the screen off if it was on previously. I just can't get the screen to stay off during a call for my wife. I've tried to convince her she just needs to use a BT headset or wired one for long phone calls. She doesnt care for the solution. LOL.

I should also mention I'm on CleanGB 1.1.2 EL30 modem. This problem happened for her when she was on Sprint's stock GB rom too.

I find that the proximity sensor doesn't work well through hair. if i get a little hair in front of the sensor it would turn on and my cheek would hit end.
My proximity sensor stopped working on CM9, but works just fine on a TW rom (CleanGB). It's not a hardware issue that I assumed previously. Ditto autorotation...
Its not your phone or apps, its Gingerbread for the epic. It has done this since day one for me and others. It particularly happens when you get a text message while on a call. The only thing you can do is if you see it light up, just pull away from your face and then back to it and it will go back off.
I upgraded both our phones to Cyanogenmod 9 beta 1 and she hasn't complained about the proximity sensor problem yet. I think it's almost been 2 weeks. Otherwise, she was about to throw her phone out a window because she was so frustrated.
I've noticed the sensor is setup so there is some delay when turning the screen on and off. So, having the screen come off your face for a second or switching ears quickly, won't aways cause the screen to come back on. So far so good. Plus, I LOVE ICS. It's been a perfect daily driver!
Cheers,

Yea...started happening to me a few days ago. Try totally disabling the lock screen, and see if it stops. If it does, you can enable it again. Are you using the regular slider lock screen? That's what I was using when it happened. I used face unlock for almost 2 days, and it never happened. I'm not running any lock screen now that I'm home, and its fine. Its just weird that it randomly started happening...I've never used a third party lock screen or even messed with the default settings for it to happen.
Yeah im using the stock lock sliders. I'll play with the lock sliders tonight when I get home and see how that goes.

is there an app that lets you to turn on your screen without having to press the buttons?
For example saying "Nexus" and your screen lights up?
You mean from sleep or from power off?

I use "Screen Control" by MYDIGITA, which uses the N10's accelerometer to wake up the device. Just give it a shake. It is not perfect but works well enough.

I'd also look into Tasker app. For example - I'm sure you could make it wake when headphones are inserted, etc...

Last week I changed from using "Screen Control" to a free app called "Gravity Screen Off" by Plexnor, after reading an XDA review. The reason I like Gravity Screen Off more than Screen Control is that it keeps the screen from turning when reader long text as it detects slight movements on the N10. That meant I could uninstall an app I had to used with Screen Control called "KeepScreen". Simply put, Gravity Screen Off does the job of two apps and does it better.
Problem:
Phone in my pocket, volume down gets bumped into. The next 3 hours I won't get any notifications. This is incredibly annoying and frustrating.
How in the world can I disable volume down activating do not disturb while the screen is off?
First, the power button has to be bumped first, then the volume down button (various times). Too much bumping.
get a case

The power button does not need to be bumped.
While the phone is sleeping (screen off + short wait), press volume down either once or twice and it will go into do not disturb mode. I can also put on full volume while it's sleeping as well.
Tried what you said. Doesn't happpen to me. Using stock rom.

I restarted the phone and the issue hasn't come back yet. If/when it does I'll post again. Seems to be a weird bug

Issue has just came back. Restarting the phone makes it go away. Seems like we have found a solution! I'll keep a log of how often this happens here.

Which rom are you using? Is Double tap to Wake enabled? Are you using an app to lock the screen? Maybe that app is not locking the screen initially but displaying a black image for a short time before turning the display off.

Stock rom.
Ambient display is disabled.
No App. It did this stock out of the box
RMA would be a better option.
Problem has come back! a week delay this time
I would love an option to disable it on the phone entirely I never use it anyway and it occasionally gets turned on by mistake and I end up missing calls.
Found this in another forum - change DND priority settings to allow calls and messages from anyone. Should fix it!
