When I compare the N7 to my Note 2 on the same video the N7 looks very washed out compared to to my Note 2. (or my old Note).
I tried a ROM with the Bravia engine but still did not see much of an improvement.
Does the Bravia engine work on video or just images? What is the deal on that?
Is there anyway to tweak the image quality?
You should try posting in the designated Q&A thread for the Nexus 7.....just sayin'.

Don't try to compare the N7 screen with a Samsung screen, which probably has Amoled, they're different. I noticed this too when I compared it to my S2, but it's understandable and I don't pay much attention to it.

READ, READ, READ! this is the wrong section!
nexus7 has an LCD display with true colors that may seem washed out but are true, compared to an amoled (all samsung displays) that give more (falsed) colors
try downloading tegra prism toggle apk (needs root) this helps

On another note the colors really aren't that "true" on the n7 they are pretty washed out. Comparing the colors of the n7 to my Dell IPS monitor shows just how washed out the n7 is.

"Many of the images were noticeably washed out -- they looked like over exposed photographs with missing highlights, reduced image contrast, and weak colors," Soneira wrote.
But I was curious why these shortcomings weren't showing up in reviews -- and why Soneira seemed to be contradicting himself when he told me that the display itself was "high quality." So, I asked him to clarify this.
Here's what he said.
The LCD panel itself is excellent. Good luminance, high Contrast Ratio, excellent Color Gamut and Color Saturation. So the raw LCD display itself is great. The problem is that the factory calibration of the display parameters (generally performed via firmware) is way off (particularly the Intensity Scale) so the images that appear on this fine LCD display look washed out...the display produces washed out images and colors in spite of the fact that it has a display with excellent color saturation and contrast. Similarly, a great camera will take poor quality photos if it isn't properly factory calibrated.
He expands on particulars in the blog post.
There is about a 25 percent compression of bright image content, which is quite substantial. This holds for both the Gallery Viewer and the Chrome Browser. On some cheap displays this is done intentionally by the manufacturer because the compression actually makes them appear artificially bright. Here I think it's probably just incompetence by the manufacturer, which is too bad because they messed up a really nice display.
I also want to know about this. The contrast seems very low to me. This display can do better than what it's currently set at.

I have some faith that when morfic makes a trinity kernel for the n7 that some of this will be rectified. Unfortunately, his order was held up. I guess the first step is to find out what code is tweak able in the kernel to actually do this.

I believe I saw a mod which corrected some of the Galaxy Nexus dislpay shortcomings by calibrating it a bit differently. I wonder if the same could be said for the Nexus 7. @piam, I don't know why the reviewers never mentioned this in their reviews, but that's the first thing I noticed when I opened up my Nexus 7, and that was on the stock wallpaper that was on.
I just hope that someone gets a mod out soon, cause its a really great tablet looking cheap just because of the washed out colours.
I find that the home screen is not well optimized but Netflix is looking pretty good. I also find that lowering the brightness helps...which does indicate a calibration issue.
Its pretty good already though...almost quibbling.

I've noticed while using YouTube as well. If play videos on my Galaxy Nexus side by side with my Nexus 7, the colors look washed out. Probably there will be a kernel fix.

I've noticed in the phonearena review that there is a new Adobe RGB screen mode and a new Adapt Display option. Are there any articles that show and tell exactly how these work and if the colour reproduction is as good as the iphone 5 or HTC one?

I was wondering the same. I didn't care for the colors on the S3 and find my iPhone 5 screen/colors much better. I think I'm really going to like the S4, particularly if you can change the display modes.

htc has Super LCD
iPhone has IPS
and Samsung has Super AMOLED with some special matrix of pixel from Samsung
So samsung devices are little bit darker than iphones and htcs and thr s little bit problem in sun-light to use tham (u will have to set brightness to 100% to use galaxy S3 (for example) on sun-light)
u can search Galaxies pixel matrix on google and check lots of img about it so u will get ur answer better.

To the OP, check this piece via GSMArena (with links to the original source) - looks like the Adobe and Film modes are the real deal for colour temperature and accuracy. Colour accuracy is dramatically better than the One, which has a colour temperature of ~8000 (worse than the S3, decidedly blue tint that discolours greys in particular, I notice the same on my HTC BUtterfly).

Do you think the Note 3 will come with a 1080p non pentile screen or 1080p pentile?
I hope it's non pentile, love the RGB SAMOLED on Note II. 1080p RGB SAMOLED is going to be awesome, It's already awesome as it is

^AMOLED is OLED. SLCD? Doubt it.
It better be 1080p rgb if they want me to "upgrade". Though I'm not that interested in 1080p, the reported energy savings of the newest oled screens is alluring.

Yeah, 1080p isn't a dealbreaker for me. I don't honestly still see much difference on a good, well calibrated 720 vs 1080p screens. Probably people with perfect 20/20 vision are the ones who swear they see it, but anyways, I'm more than good with 720p
If they switch to pentile instead of rgb, doesn't matter if it's 1080p, would surely feel awful tbh. Hate pentile displays

Actually, it is possible to increase brightness of AMOLEDs a lot - but that would degrade the screen super-fast. Hence the low brightness levels/limits. And obviously the battery drain would be massive considering the whites draining a lot of battery already.
I honestly cannot see the point in a 1080p screen on a phone, not that it is a bad thing by any means, but I find the current resolution more than adequate and more pixels mean higher battery drain/more stress on the gpu.

In Microeconomics, in consumer choice theory, when analysis the indifference curve, there is a assumption knows as non-satiation, search them up.

+1. Can hardly notice any difference between those full HD phones and my Note II after calibration. Actually to me N2 looks quite superior to many of those screens. Don't usually put screens under microscopes though

Basically, axiom of non-satiation says "more is better".
therefore 1080p > 720p.

Nope, I have already stated I would prefer battery life over more pixels, the current display is fine.
By that baseless logic, you could say "more cancer is better than less"... makes no sense.

Apparently some people have super vision and can see the pixels even in a 440DPI screen. (not joking)
Well (un)luckily, I don't even have 20/20 vision (still pretty decent eyesight, mind) and I'm good with my Note 2
I think lot of the "way too obvious" differences people notice are mere placebo effect. I mean 440ppi full HD? That HAS to be WAY better right? Seeing what they want to see etc. But yeah, probably there are people with perfect super vision who can make out the difference.

As soon as people needs a microscope to tell which one is better I loose interest. Even at home, when everybody is buying the new Hi-Res flat screen TV, I choose to buy a projector, It's only 720p but the size is 300cm X 170cm. No TV can beat that yet

So i have a nexus 10 and my dad has an iPad 3rd gen. Now the thing is that from specs my screen is supposed to be better than his but then after comparing two same 720p playing videos it seems that the ipad 3rd gen gives more sharp colours than mine and was wondering whether there was a way to fix(without root) this as i remember my brother showing me on his S3 settings a way to change his screen settings to dynamic which makes colours look a lot more sharp and better looking though S3 has touchwiz and i have vanilla
Thanks
By sharp I assume you have to mean saturated. Colors look slightly better on the KTManta kernel, but we do not have any sort of color control at all and probably never will. There are a TON of posts on this matter so you should just go search them.

You can tweak this through various apps and kernels, but there are different types of screens (Ex: Amoled, IPS) and they all produce colors differently.
Edit: I stand corrected...

Hi,
I'm in process of buying Galaxy S5 but have one question to be answered. I've read some mixed reviews regarding the display performance and color representation of the S5 and I couldn't decide who to believe. I've read that cinema mode is the most accurate but also seen some reviews that it isn't as good either. A one of the most recent article on PhoneArena about displays also added to my fears regarding S5 display.
I want to ask from S5 users that is it really the case, does it really noticeable while viewing videos/images or playing games etc. How does cinema mode competes with M8, Z2 etc.
Phonearena have done quite a few blunders recently in their reviews, I don't trust them.
I'd rather go for AnandTech and DisplayMate test results. They have given the S5 very high marks.

Thanks for your reply. As you are using S5 can you please tell me your personal experience with display.
I recently changed from a S3 to S5 (G900F). The colors are much more natural than S3's, the screen is a lot brighter and the quality is awesome. It has extremely deep black so deep that you can't distinguish if the screen is off or on! Even in a dark room. The brightness helps when you are outdoors. I live in Macedonia, Greece and here in Greece we have a lot of sunshine through the year, especially now I find it easier to use under sunlight than the S3. Also the white is very good.
So, to sum up:
-Natural colors
-Deep black
-Very bright when you need it.
-Battery savings thanks to amoled technology.
I recommend that you use the phone in person before buying it, from a friend or at a store. This is my personal experience so don't take it for granted. You may end up with different results from me when you use it because everyone has different needs/expectations.

Quite a bit, it's not bad at all.
Cinema mode is the Most natural But is stile Not perfect. With root could be possible To chance color value in The Files with The screen configurations? Chance The code strings. Because it is only a setting like The TV setting preset... But on a TV we Can set manually contrast gamma saturation ecc.. It would be interesting To find Files in The Phone that contains The sets of The screen And Try To change......
