Screen Modes Comparison? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed in the phonearena review that there is a new Adobe RGB screen mode and a new Adapt Display option. Are there any articles that show and tell exactly how these work and if the colour reproduction is as good as the iphone 5 or HTC one?

I was wondering the same. I didn't care for the colors on the S3 and find my iPhone 5 screen/colors much better. I think I'm really going to like the S4, particularly if you can change the display modes.

htc has Super LCD
iPhone has IPS
and Samsung has Super AMOLED with some special matrix of pixel from Samsung
So samsung devices are little bit darker than iphones and htcs and thr s little bit problem in sun-light to use tham (u will have to set brightness to 100% to use galaxy S3 (for example) on sun-light)
u can search Galaxies pixel matrix on google and check lots of img about it so u will get ur answer better.

To the OP, check this piece via GSMArena (with links to the original source) - looks like the Adobe and Film modes are the real deal for colour temperature and accuracy. Colour accuracy is dramatically better than the One, which has a colour temperature of ~8000 (worse than the S3, decidedly blue tint that discolours greys in particular, I notice the same on my HTC BUtterfly).

AMOLED is more colorful than Super AMOLED!!!

Hi , I'm Sultan.
I have 2 devices : Samsung Galaxy S i9000 and Nexus One.
when i open the same application in these 2 devices , like Talking tom
i got that Nexus one screen is more colorful and better.
when u open white pages , you will see SAMOLED is little blue and AMOLED is White.
SAMOLED is changing original colors of any app or video.
is there any solution for this problem. Like changing the colors temp to standard.
I want to fix I9000 screen.
it's like when u change the LCD Screen temp of colors to cold.
Thanks , Sultan

In my experience the automatic brightness is quite "low" (weak), and when I want to see beautiful colors I usually go in the Display --> Brightness settings and instead of auto I put it at max, then the colors are more vibrant than in any screen I've seen.
SAMOLED at full blast is blinding powerful colour show man, yesterday i was playing around with some system tools and the damn App set the display to MAX i was left almost blinded
the colours were amazing! at full capacity, my 1080p 25" 10000:1 LCD pale compared to the SAMOLED
And what happens with battery drain when brightness is set to MAX?
Big impact? Low impact? In the middle?
I would say that colors that S-AMOLED outputs are way more vivid than AMOLED screens.

PS
Although color temperature is different on the two phones.
Better colour temperature on the GS compared to Nexus/Desire, some may like the overly saturated look of the latter handsets however...
Guys , try to run talking tom app in both GS and Nexus one. And see who has better colors.
(( Is there any way to change colors temperature ? )).

I think there is via stock video player but don't know if it changes the entire color of the interface.
There could be a difference in running 3D apps, probably in different drawing of textures, I really don't know...

Actually, the Nexus one (and HTC Desire) screen is over-saturated, with a STRONG tendancy to orange/red.
When you open a white screen, it's a dim white.
When watching media/movies, SAMOLED gives a LOT more vivid and true colors.
If anything, the Nexus screen is "changing" the colors of every app.

Pictures of my Desire HD vs Samsung Galaxy S2

you may find this useful:

Well done, whilst I agree the Samsung screens are brighter, seeing the S2 has confirmed to me that I really don't want one (other than the fact that there just isn't any way on this earth I would choose a Samsung P.O.S.). That is ugly and does the S2 not do black?
(and maybe a better comparison would be one that doesn't compare a dark background on the DHD verses a bright colourful background on the S2 -nothing like a good bit of biasing is there?).
The GS2 really does seem like a great phone. Although in that third pic, I do like the colours of the Desire HD better. The 'Brightness' text actually seems whiter on the HD and the popup box itself looks darker.
Could you post some better comparison pics where both phones have the same background at lets say 100% brightness and 50% brightness?
Also some battery life comparisons in a couple of days? Ideally with the exact same video playing on both devices and the same settings for both phones, to get a fairly accurate comparison between the two?

that was unintentional, post updated with new like for like pics
Personal preference I guess but I have no problem with the colours / screen on the Desire HD and like I said, not keen on the excessive contrast and a phone is more than just a screen.
I'll be getting another HTC in a few months time.

Can someone please find photos of display, up very close? for V.small text?

Not a single review has produced a picture like this yet
http://photos.pcpro.co.uk/images/front_picture_library_PC_Pro/dir_327/it_photo_163531_52.png (but that's old)
I want to see the S3 vs S4 display on REALLY small text.
Check out this website on the phone, scroll to the bottom and choose "full page" http://www.theage.com.au/ the 'non mobile' version looks like crap on an S3 due to the pentile DPI being not high enough. - I'd love to know the S4 vs S3 on ultra fine text.
Unfortunately NO ONE is taking shots like this in review, sigh

I may be getting one ahead of retail release, will try and get those photos. I cannot believe that at a DPI of 441 anything is visibly noticeable to the naked eye, so for myself I'm not getting hung up on this.

Your effort would REALLY be appreciated - no damn reviewer online is competent enough to do it.
Ideally
S3, S4, Iphone 5 and HTC One all at similar range on the same web page- specifically the S3 vs the S4 though, as they are such comparable phones.
I've heard people speculate pentile can be as bad as "40% worse" then same DPI of a normal display
So 1920x1080 - 40% = only 1152x648
Food for thought
(I've also heard 20% worst, 25% worse and 33% worse)

I wouldn't say it's worse in a percentage like that
it still has 1920x1080 blue and red subpixels, it just shares the greens as far as I'm aware of

Doesn't have a good camera and definitively no macro mode, so it might not help, but here is my two cents:
- picture from S4 hpics.li/edae2bd
- picture from HTC One : hpics.li/c745d54
- and the same on S3 : hpics.li/bcb10ce
[Sorry, not allowed to post attachements and/or URL, so copy paste]
My own opinion: can't seems to distinguish any pixel on S4 and One, but as screen is brighter on One and less blurry, seems better.
PS : whole screen just to see how small it is, so very difficult to read with eyes : hpics.li/5e304c3
[Edit: Use copy paste in browser to see pictures. If someone can make a post with inner pictures, feel free to do this]
I really liked the sgs3 display. It wasn't the brightest, nor the sharpest, but any pixelation caused by the pentile layout seemed to be very round and subtle in comparison to pixelation caused by rgb pixels... maybe just me though.

Hey thanks man - pics a little shabby due to no proper camera - but got most of what Iwanted answered. The improvement from S3 -> S4 is huge, even if the one is a bit better again, the S4 looks much more usable.
If anyone else can nab some more ultra fine text shots like that with a camera camera, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks man
Right around 4:05 this video shows you a decent shot of the sub-pixel arrangement but nothing stellar. I'm sure as time passes we will get this content.

Actually looking at it extensively the colours on the S4 look much worse than the S3 - is the S4 set to low brightness mode perhaps? It's definitely crisper and more readable and less over saturated (good) but almost excessively dull.

Yeah I've seen that one before - thanks - but it's actually too close to be honest, you can't really get a good idea of the quality - whereas the other photos in this thread are much more user friendly - close to what the limits of human eyesight can see, that's good / realistic for every day use.

It was set to Auto + 5 for brightness. I took a new pic at high brigthness. And please note that software isn't final yet, so you'll have different settings in final software. Color accuracy might be adapted. And I'm quite sure it will differ from my sample.
New S4 with full brighness : hpics.li/cfaaca1

Two more pictures with my no-macro camera as close as possible.
S4: hpics.li/7ed6128
One: hpics.li/1b76d3c
One full width, just to notice that it shouldn't be a problem on both handsets, even at 5cm of the eyes : hpics.li/2182e11 :cyclops:
Definitely appears to be a superior screen to the S3, no question. I'm pretty convinced I'm snapping one up - thank you!

[Q] Screen modes on GE S4

Hi,
I've just flashed the GE rom on my international I9505 and I'm not missing any of the extras except for the screen modes. I really hate the over saturated colors of the amoled and was really happy using "movie" mode on touchwiz.
My question is - is it possible to port this functionality to the GE rom or is there an app for ajdusting the screen?
Thank you all!

Actually in S4 standard screen mode is the most accurate one because screen is magnitudes better than S3, which produced extremely over saturated colors in standard mode.
here's in depth review of S4 screen, as you can see Standard mode produces the most accurate colors.

Hi,
I didn't watch the video as it it 22min long, but I can tell you that standard is not accurate by any means. You don't even need to compare it to anything else to notice that. Reds/pinks are terrible and so are some shades of blue. I work on a calibrated monitor so this really bothers me.
I can see the average user liking standard better, but it's nice to have the option.
And here i thought every galaxy s owner used the dynamic screen mode

Either way, I don't know why you started this argument. I just asked if it was possible to port this to the GE rom.
Interesting bit from the second link
The S4′s display is also notably more efficient than the S3′s. Average power efficiency for the S3 (compared at the same hypothetical screen size) came out to 0.83W. The S4, in contrast, hits 0.70W. That’s within spitting distance of the iPhone 5′s 0.66W and it’s another sizable improvement for OLED technology.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S5 Display (Color Representation)

Hi,
I'm in process of buying Galaxy S5 but have one question to be answered. I've read some mixed reviews regarding the display performance and color representation of the S5 and I couldn't decide who to believe. I've read that cinema mode is the most accurate but also seen some reviews that it isn't as good either. A one of the most recent article on PhoneArena about displays also added to my fears regarding S5 display.
I want to ask from S5 users that is it really the case, does it really noticeable while viewing videos/images or playing games etc. How does cinema mode competes with M8, Z2 etc.
Phonearena have done quite a few blunders recently in their reviews, I don't trust them.
I'd rather go for AnandTech and DisplayMate test results. They have given the S5 very high marks.

Thanks for your reply. As you are using S5 can you please tell me your personal experience with display.
I recently changed from a S3 to S5 (G900F). The colors are much more natural than S3's, the screen is a lot brighter and the quality is awesome. It has extremely deep black so deep that you can't distinguish if the screen is off or on! Even in a dark room. The brightness helps when you are outdoors. I live in Macedonia, Greece and here in Greece we have a lot of sunshine through the year, especially now I find it easier to use under sunlight than the S3. Also the white is very good.
So, to sum up:
-Natural colors
-Deep black
-Very bright when you need it.
-Battery savings thanks to amoled technology.
I recommend that you use the phone in person before buying it, from a friend or at a store. This is my personal experience so don't take it for granted. You may end up with different results from me when you use it because everyone has different needs/expectations.

So, would you guys suggest that Cinema Mode is the way to go for everyday use?

Quite a bit, it's not bad at all.
Cinema mode is the Most natural But is stile Not perfect. With root could be possible To chance color value in The Files with The screen configurations? Chance The code strings. Because it is only a setting like The TV setting preset... But on a TV we Can set manually contrast gamma saturation ecc.. It would be interesting To find Files in The Phone that contains The sets of The screen And Try To change......
