Pictures of my Desire HD vs Samsung Galaxy S2 - Desire HD General

Well done, whilst I agree the Samsung screens are brighter, seeing the S2 has confirmed to me that I really don't want one (other than the fact that there just isn't any way on this earth I would choose a Samsung P.O.S.). That is ugly and does the S2 not do black?
(and maybe a better comparison would be one that doesn't compare a dark background on the DHD verses a bright colourful background on the S2 -nothing like a good bit of biasing is there?).

The GS2 really does seem like a great phone. Although in that third pic, I do like the colours of the Desire HD better. The 'Brightness' text actually seems whiter on the HD and the popup box itself looks darker.
Could you post some better comparison pics where both phones have the same background at lets say 100% brightness and 50% brightness?
Also some battery life comparisons in a couple of days? Ideally with the exact same video playing on both devices and the same settings for both phones, to get a fairly accurate comparison between the two?

that was unintentional, post updated with new like for like pics

Personal preference I guess but I have no problem with the colours / screen on the Desire HD and like I said, not keen on the excessive contrast and a phone is more than just a screen.
I'll be getting another HTC in a few months time.

The truth!! X10 vs. SGS...

Hi guys,
I own a Xperia X10 ( latest firmware version available)and i had the opportunity yesterday to use a Samsung Galaxy S for the whole day. SGS belogs to a friend of mine.
Here are my impressions of the Sam G. S in comparasion to our "beloved" X10.
1.Screen
Colours are more vivid on SGS, but X10 has better resolution. I could differentiate the pixels on SGS, but not on X10. I'm quite picky with screen resolutions. I own a Iphone4 aswell and i can say X10 its not very behind iPhone4 concerning the screen resolution and crispness image. X10 just needs the 2.1 to boost to 16 million colours and get more vivid contrast.
2.Touch screen.
Exactly the same. They're balanced. I just wish to get MT on X10. MT can be useful in certain situations.
3. UI Performance.
Although X10 has the old 1.6 Android, i had the impression that lags less (mine doesn't lag at all and i´ve plenty of applications installed) than the SGS. I felt that the fluidity of X10 is pretty good, now that i've used my friends SGS for a whole day. Switching screens was more laggy and the refreshment rate was worse than on X10 - i couldn't believe what i was experiencing.
4. Multimedia.
Oh god. I've just to say that there isn't any phone with such a great audio quality as the X10. Miles ahead of the SGS and even Iphone4 that i also own. Crispy and balanced tones on X10. SGS was pretty average.
Video is also interesting: Refreshing rates / fps were the same watching the same movie. X10 is more crispy and the SGS has more vivid colours.
conclusion:
Android 2.1 will leverage X10 to a much higher level and it will be on pair or even better than almost all Android phones including those with the 2.2 version.
I'm not replacing my X10 for the SGS as i was planning before.
Hope it helps!
That seems like a fair comparison and is very inline with what I experienced using the AT&T Captivate. I had that device for 28 days and replaced it with the X10.
The lag is generally believed to be because of the file system Samsung chose (RFS). It's not clear why they chose RFS and the lag fixes floating around basically make a new data partition with EXT2, EXT3, or EXT4. It doesn't matter for me at this point but I'm glad I don't have to rely on Samsung to fix all the issues on their Galaxy S devices. There are many other annoyances on the Captivate but I won't bother listing them. The bottom line is that for me the X10 is a much better device.
Thank you very much for an interesting post in a long time and thank you for a good clean review! Very much appriciated

REALLY??? I hope you are not talking about x10's speaker audio quality..
i LOVE x10.. but seriously.. i have to listen to everything through bluetooth headset or an earphone.. the sound is HORRIBLE when you just have it on the speaker, and it hurts my ears.. especially on higher volumes...and yes.. i've compared it to other phones.. my lg new chocolate sounds a lot better compared to x10.. (only comparing the speaker audio quality)
Seems fair both phones have their positives and negatives, i think the 2.1 update will make the x10 a lot more solid, some people think theres not much difference between between 1.6 and 2.1, but it has its obvious advantages. preferably i would have liked to have seen 2.2 on there but hey il take whatever i can get.
I have both phones and I agree with some of what your saying, yes it lags a bit and text in definitely not as sharp
but in the multimedia you made no sense... The sgs is far better when it comes to watching movies the sharpness is basically the same as the x10 plus more vibrant colours (it also has divx support out of the box). Audio quality is superior on the sgs without a shadow of a doubt even the gsm arena say so(lets not forget it has an equaliser). It has a better battery life and its fully rooted with full boot loader access you have missed out so many sections, sigh maybe i should make my own proper comparison.
I agree having owned both. SGS colors "pop" more, but the colors are not accurate at all. I used to compare to my Nexus One and colors were actually way off on the Samsung.
SGS plays just about any video codec you throw at it which is nice. Listening through headphones the X10 kills it. The screen is just a smooth I think as well.
Go on a Captivate and read web text while scrolling very slowly. There is a really bad "rolling" effect that actually bugged me while using it.
When the X10 gets 2.1 it will certainly hang with the Galaxy S models in my opinion. I just wish the Xperia had the internal storage of the SGS line.
btw, gps performance on the X10 is spot on where Samsungs tend to not be great in that area. Even after their gps "fix" it won't be as fast and accurate as the X10.
I work for AT&T and I see many problems coming in with the Captivate. The browser crashes often and the phone reboots itself a few times a day sometimes. I owned one and my gf still owns one and her's has some of these issues.
Just for clarification:
i meant that the audio quality via headphones...using high quality headphones. Yes X10 is the best in the market. I owned a Nokia N900 and i did the comparasion as well.
Sorry for disagreeing, but the X10 is also more sharp watching videos than the SGS. SGS has to saturated colours.

Well i have to disagree in the audio department but thats down to audio taste i guess. But the sgs video quality is better than the x10 i have viewed the same HD video on both, side by side and you would be a fool to tell anyone the the x10 is better to look at.
Edit: In fact im looking at both now, the sgs blows it out of the water sorry. I can upload pics if you want proof.

Sure as soon as I get home around 6 ish my 14mp cam is at home.
What is the rom from SGS? I know that Sony Ericsson have 1GB SLC, 50% to ROM and 50% to Storage, in some websites shows 15GB of ROM to Samsung, others 2GB of ROM, 16GB os MLC in SGS is for ROM+Storage like the 1GB SLC in X10?
My best mate has a SGS. We compare all the time. For those in this thread that think the SGS screen is producing more saturated colours etc...
You are just not used to the REAL colours. The SGS has the best screen on the market. It has a 50000:1 contrast ratio! The blacks are near perfect. Which makes the non-black elements "pop" off the screen.
When we both load up the exact same black screen on the same brightness, my x10 looks like it's GREY compared to his SGS. I can use my full black screen in a dark bathroom as a dull light, he can not. As for video watching, the SGS screen is much clearer and and crisp. This is because of its extremely high contrast ratio. Moreover, the x10 on 1.6 can only show 65k colours on a TFT screen. While the SGS SAMOLED screen on 2.1 uses 16million!
I love my x10 guys, but the SGS screen and display is far superior and certainly looks like it when placed side by side with an x10.
Now, when x10 finally gets 2.1 which will allow the x10 to display 16m colours, it will be a whole lot different for comparison, but it still won't match up to the super high contrast ratio that the SGS has.
Samsung uses fake colours, the sony dont have the best screen, but is good, and with great resolution, Sony have 13.3' screen with 1920x1080 in notebooks, and others better than this, Apple and Sony are the kings of resolution

REAL colours and 50000:1 contrast ratios? HAHAHA. First off, maybe a handful of lcds in current production produce accurate colors and they're not put in mobiles. Secondly, 50000:1 contrast ratios is a marketing gimmick and means something, but it isn't an objective measure in any sense as different companies scale it differently.

Now that there is a huge exaggeration. Also, video quality also varies depending on the media file, player, And screen. Either way, lcd screens on mobiles aren't that great to begin with.

Maybe, but you certainly don't have any compelling arguments as to why the Galaxy S is better than the x10. Even with the increase in colors, how many can the eye actually distinguish from another? Certainly not 16 million.

Once again, contrast ratio is a subjective metric defined by manufacturers used as a marketing gimmick.

well in all honesty its quite an amazing screen and down playing the specs doesnt make any less amazing.
Samsung is known for it's great picture quality, from it's out of this world LED Tv's to it's cell phones.
the Samsung Galaxy is a superior phone. The X10 better get a lot better with the 2.1 upgrade. Otherwise, Im upgrading it to 2.1 just to add a selling point.
In 2009 it stays in 4th place in TVs...
1º Pionner Kuduro
2º Philips
3º Panasonic
4º Samsung
5º Sony
Something like that, so, nothing impressive... btw, i dont like the samsung colors, totally fake...

Bizarre request for Omnia 7 owners

Hey everybody!
I hope you guys are enjoying your Omnias. I'm thinking about getting one, but I already have a Galaxy S and am suffering the dreaded SAMOLED Pentile issue. That is, that the screen Samsung uses has a lower pixel count than standard LCD screens. On Android this is pretty awful and makes text look fuzzy at small sizes.
Now, I'd like to see how WP7 looks on the screen, especially since everyone is raving about how awesome it looks. It might be that Samsung has tweaked the display so that it looks better.
So, my request is close-up pictures of the display while it's on. Showing websites (zoomed out), pictures and the main menu. Preferrably taken with a camera that supports "macro mode" so that we can clearly see how sharp (or not) the display actually looks. I'd love to see it in person, but apparently the phone hasn't arrived in Spain yet.
I'd really appreciate this, so thanks in advance to anyone that goes ahead with my request!

These reviews by GSMArena and PhoneArena should give you an idea, and has some close shots. While zoomed out webpages does look pixelated, the contrast and colours of the Omnia 7 is just stunning. I personally just zoom abit if it gets pixelated, plus I dont like reading text thats too small anyway.

If you still need I may try to take some photos of it this weekend...
I used to have HTC Diamond (2 devices : touch and Pro), then I get an iPhone 4, and now the omnia7 : the screen is really really better on the Omnia, I was very impressed by the quality of it (video playback is very nice, pictures too, websites are ok)

I would really appreciate it if you would I have seen the online reviews but none of them have pics of enough quality for me to see how text is rendered on the screen.
I really hate how pixelated everything looks on the Galaxy S. As soon as I get close to the screen it's like I'm looking through a net. The screen on the Omnia is the same, but if Microsoft has better font rendering it might be less noticeable.
Thanks!
No way to overpass a hardware limitation with any software. If you found very small text being difficult to read on your Galaxy S, it would be the same on Omnia 7. However, in contrast to Android, Windows Phone 7 is designed with the AMOLED tech in mind. All text in the default UI are big enough (even too big for some tastes ) avoiding described flaw being noticeable. Still in the browser or bad compound third party apps with too small fonts it would be the same as Galaxy S.
Btw, IMHO this is no issue. I don’t like to torture myself by reading so small texts on an already small phone screen anyway, so just zoom in is used here .
Well - on the "no fix in software is possible" - not quite. Microsoft ClearType is used on RGB LCDs to make text look smoother by changing the color of pixels based on the known layout of the colored subpixel-elements.
The problem with the AMOLED Screens seems to be that they don't have red and blue in every pixel (only green). Perhaps using clever software it would be possible to avoid fuzzy rendering of text and Microsoft developed WP7 with AMOLED screens in mind.
So it would be possible but I guess there are no optimizations of that kind. I had no problems with my Omnia 7 up to now so I'd just say it's not that big of a deal.
I just have swapped from Galaxy to Omnia and the I do like the display I have no problem reading large or small fonts between the 2. I have not had a sunny day yet to test this but I found on the Galaxy that the auto brightness always had a little lag I would always need to remove my sunnies for a couple of seconds to see what I was doing then the phone would kick in and I could put them on. The Omnia on black background is really designed for reading text large or small.
Hi, I've taken you some pics, but the "attach too" limits the size of an attachment. I can email them to you or if you have a minute to suggest a better way to upload them I'll be happy to give it a shot.

Thanks! I actually forgot to update the thread. I have finally bought an Omnia for myself, decided to take the risk So I no longer need the pics.
It is true, it is the same screen as on the Galaxy S and the dreaded pentile is there. However, due to the metro UI it bothers me a lot less and it does make everything pop out more and seem very attractive.
WP7 renders fonts better than android so browsing is a lot easier on the Omnia's screen than it was on the Galaxy. Overall I'm really happy with the device and I like it a lot more than I like the Galaxy.

Can someone please find photos of display, up very close? for V.small text?

I want to see the S3 vs S4 display on REALLY small text.
Check out this website on the phone, scroll to the bottom and choose "full page" http://www.theage.com.au/ the 'non mobile' version looks like crap on an S3 due to the pentile DPI being not high enough. - I'd love to know the S4 vs S3 on ultra fine text.

Your effort would REALLY be appreciated - no damn reviewer online is competent enough to do it.
Ideally
S3, S4, Iphone 5 and HTC One all at similar range on the same web page- specifically the S3 vs the S4 though, as they are such comparable phones.
I've heard people speculate pentile can be as bad as "40% worse" then same DPI of a normal display
So 1920x1080 - 40% = only 1152x648
Food for thought
(I've also heard 20% worst, 25% worse and 33% worse)

it still has 1920x1080 blue and red subpixels, it just shares the greens as far as I'm aware of

Doesn't have a good camera and definitively no macro mode, so it might not help, but here is my two cents:
- picture from S4 hpics.li/edae2bd
- picture from HTC One : hpics.li/c745d54
- and the same on S3 : hpics.li/bcb10ce
[Sorry, not allowed to post attachements and/or URL, so copy paste]
My own opinion: can't seems to distinguish any pixel on S4 and One, but as screen is brighter on One and less blurry, seems better.
PS : whole screen just to see how small it is, so very difficult to read with eyes : hpics.li/5e304c3

I really liked the sgs3 display. It wasn't the brightest, nor the sharpest, but any pixelation caused by the pentile layout seemed to be very round and subtle in comparison to pixelation caused by rgb pixels... maybe just me though.

Hey thanks man - pics a little shabby due to no proper camera - but got most of what Iwanted answered. The improvement from S3 -> S4 is huge, even if the one is a bit better again, the S4 looks much more usable.
If anyone else can nab some more ultra fine text shots like that with a camera camera, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks man

Actually looking at it extensively the colours on the S4 look much worse than the S3 - is the S4 set to low brightness mode perhaps? It's definitely crisper and more readable and less over saturated (good) but almost excessively dull.

Yeah I've seen that one before - thanks - but it's actually too close to be honest, you can't really get a good idea of the quality - whereas the other photos in this thread are much more user friendly - close to what the limits of human eyesight can see, that's good / realistic for every day use.

It was set to Auto + 5 for brightness. I took a new pic at high brigthness. And please note that software isn't final yet, so you'll have different settings in final software. Color accuracy might be adapted. And I'm quite sure it will differ from my sample.

One full width, just to notice that it shouldn't be a problem on both handsets, even at 5cm of the eyes : hpics.li/2182e11 :cyclops:
Definitely appears to be a superior screen to the S3, no question. I'm pretty convinced I'm snapping one up - thank you!

Screen Modes Comparison?

I've noticed in the phonearena review that there is a new Adobe RGB screen mode and a new Adapt Display option. Are there any articles that show and tell exactly how these work and if the colour reproduction is as good as the iphone 5 or HTC one?

I was wondering the same. I didn't care for the colors on the S3 and find my iPhone 5 screen/colors much better. I think I'm really going to like the S4, particularly if you can change the display modes.

htc has Super LCD
iPhone has IPS
and Samsung has Super AMOLED with some special matrix of pixel from Samsung
So samsung devices are little bit darker than iphones and htcs and thr s little bit problem in sun-light to use tham (u will have to set brightness to 100% to use galaxy S3 (for example) on sun-light)
u can search Galaxies pixel matrix on google and check lots of img about it so u will get ur answer better.

u can search Galaxies pixel matrix on google and check lots of img about it so u will get ur answer better.

I've noticed in the phonearena review that there is a new Adobe RGB screen mode and a new Adapt Display option. Are there any articles that show and tell exactly how these work and if the colour reproduction is as good as the iphone 5 or HTC one?

To the OP, check this piece via GSMArena (with links to the original source) - looks like the Adobe and Film modes are the real deal for colour temperature and accuracy. Colour accuracy is dramatically better than the One, which has a colour temperature of ~8000 (worse than the S3, decidedly blue tint that discolours greys in particular, I notice the same on my HTC BUtterfly).

Xperia Z Review...

I have read a few reviews on the Xperia Z on here. But I would like to give me input .
User Interface:
It is very much like a lighter version of Xperia Gingerbread devices. And looks much nicer in my opinion. Sony has done pretty good in keeping it close to stock while giving there own skin too. The lock screen is fancy although I do miss the lockscreen shortcuts like on Samsung and LG devices.
Speed:
Pretty laggy to start with. Which I am sure you will all agree is not very acceptable for a phone of this much power. But after installing a custom ROM is flies like it should do. I can't tell any major speed differences between this and any other high end smarphones. But it gets me by. And this is making me wonder why I even bother with benchmarks when it is getting more further apart from actual user experience.
Screen:
The screen is gorgeous. I don't look at my phone from the side. Which sounds pretty stupid to me. It is much better than the nexus 4 who's colours look washed out. When it comes to PPI you cant really see a difference to be honest. I am using the display calibrator and my settings are the following: Saturation 3.3 and hue 210. This is the best option for a more balance of colours In my opinion..
Design:
I have no issues with design. I remember watching the following video before I got the phone and thought it was amazing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3yMw2L3tJA
However. This video is pretty misleading. I dropped my phone on solid concrete about 5 feet high. IT now has a few dents at the bottom. But screen is fine and back has only minor scratches. Of course I bought a case straight away! Apart from that the actual design is sexy! much better than the S3 or even HTC one in my opinion. The flaps are annoying. BUT THEY SERVE A PURPOSE.
Camera: Camera I also have no problems with as I am not a professional photographer. The only complaint is the lostt of fine detail. But in some cases this just helps the photos look more stunning and "smooth". Depedning on your opinion. Burst mode is just too noisy for me. So it'll do for me.
There you have it guys. short and sweet. IF you would like to know my opinion on other features etc. Please do not hesitate to say.
I may be selling this to get the Galaxy note 10.1. As I am a sucker for big displays and to be brutally honest Samsung. I never text or call. just facebook, Internet, whatsapp and youtube.
Very detailed
