[Q] Colour Sharper - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i have a nexus 10 and my dad has an iPad 3rd gen. Now the thing is that from specs my screen is supposed to be better than his but then after comparing two same 720p playing videos it seems that the ipad 3rd gen gives more sharp colours than mine and was wondering whether there was a way to fix(without root) this as i remember my brother showing me on his S3 settings a way to change his screen settings to dynamic which makes colours look a lot more sharp and better looking though S3 has touchwiz and i have vanilla
Thanks

By sharp I assume you have to mean saturated. Colors look slightly better on the KTManta kernel, but we do not have any sort of color control at all and probably never will. There are a TON of posts on this matter so you should just go search them.

You can tweak this through various apps and kernels, but there are different types of screens (Ex: Amoled, IPS) and they all produce colors differently.
Edit: I stand corrected...

Sadly, not true with the nexus 10. No apps or kernels. Listen to Enigma.

Actually the front facing camera on the iPhone 4/4S is just as good, if not better than the one on my GS3.
And as far as the rest of the list, what may be advantages for us may not be for someone else.
I am sure people over in the Apple forums have come up with a similar list on why the iPhone 4S is better than the GS3.
These types of threads are juvenile.

I actually think its a very helpful list for a person choosing between the galaxy s3 and the iphone4s, and yes i was thinking about making a list for the iphone4S I would probably get around 15-20 reasons not 52
I have to disagree with louder speakers. My Mrs has the 4s and while my s3 is loud... Much louder than my s2, the 4s overpowers it when both are set to full volume watching same item.
She loves her 4s and I love my s3!! She tried so hard to get me to get a 4s....as you can see that clearly worked I'm android and could not take a step back to ios (my view).

If you're on T-Mobile, I can give you one big fat reason NOT to. Their full upgrade pricing is offensive. They should be ashamed at $379.99 so they offer a $50.00 mail in rebate.......BFD! Still not worth it on a two year commitment.

Maybe so.......guess we all have our own preferences. I think the iPhone is great but I'll never get one until apple offers more screen real-estate. Man hands don't like 3.5 inch screens.
I came from HTC Desire.
My reasons for buying the S3 were:
1. Bigger screen
2. Better proc
3. Larger RAM size
4. Better battery life
5. My Desire was broken...I accidentally drop it from 4th floor ...I searched for a new phone even considered waiting iPhone 5 and looking at Nokia Lumia 800...but SGS3 is the best I can find right now ... I have my doubts on iPhone 5 and WP7 is not very attractive
There's no such thing as an RGB sensor. It falsely appears on some specs. It's just an RGB LED indicator. You have millions of RGB sensors in your cameras, nobody needs a single-pixel rgb sensor.

Samsung Galaxy S III has a complement age ambient RGB light sensor. We have contacted Samsung about it and say typical environmental light sensors detect only green light (is the eye human is more sensitive), but do not work too well under fluorescent lighting. The RGB sensor detects all visible light and supposedly makes better adjustments to the brightness of the screen
frankly speaking there isnt a need for reason to get sgs3 , its already a benchmark for apple to beat , also i not so sure why apple fans is showing a ip4 vs sgs3 videos , cant they wait for ip5 or something
No use comparing a iOS device and an android device.
Android is way more flexible and customizable. IPhone doesnt even allows you to use the memory as a usb flash drive out of the box. You need to do quite some tweaks to reach that.
Consider playing an audio/video on iOS other than the formats recognised by itunes - you will get pissed off!!
No s-voice in your list? some people may think it's a gimmick, but it's extremely useful to a lot of people. it's also a reason for people to switch over if they are anal about siri

nexus 7 screen colors

Loving the nexus 7 however I'm wondering is it me or does the screen overall color seem a little faded/washed out. I mean the images are crisp but it seems the color isn't very vibrant.. thoughts? Or do I have a bad unit?
Thanks so much
I found myself thinking the same thing. However the only comparison I have is the same background on my Galaxy Nexus. It could just be the GN being very saturated. I like that though and was a bit disappointed by the screen.
I find the screen to be great. However, I have an Evo LTE so the color saturation seems to be pretty similar.

The screen is great to me. Very clean and viewing angles are great.
Washed after update
The colors were fine, but I'm noticing that they appear washed out since the most recent update. I don't have a direct frame of reference since I updated, but I could swear that the colors aren't as vibrant as they were before. I also have an Evo 4G LTE and the N7 colors are less vibrant (something that wasn't too obvious before). I know they are different screens, it's just something that didn't bug me before.
Hi, could you please comment on how good is skin tone color reproduction. Thanks.
i thinked the same that the colors looks like a bit washed out / fade.. is this normal?
The colors on the S3 are vividly colored

I agree. I think the default automatic brightness feature is a little dull. You should try to manually increase the brightness....that seemed to fix my problem.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Compared to both my Galaxy Tab (original 7" 2010 model) and my Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE, (both with PLS, Samsung's version of IPS screens), the Nexus 7 is indeed more washed out/dimmer. It's brighter than my Nook Color though.
But the colors are fairly accurate and the viewing angles are good. Hoping for a mod that increases auto-brightness levels a few notches, and a mod to adjust color temps/saturation and I'd be happy with it.

Possible Display Calibration Correction?

"Many of the images were noticeably washed out -- they looked like over exposed photographs with missing highlights, reduced image contrast, and weak colors," Soneira wrote.
But I was curious why these shortcomings weren't showing up in reviews -- and why Soneira seemed to be contradicting himself when he told me that the display itself was "high quality." So, I asked him to clarify this.
Here's what he said.
The LCD panel itself is excellent. Good luminance, high Contrast Ratio, excellent Color Gamut and Color Saturation. So the raw LCD display itself is great. The problem is that the factory calibration of the display parameters (generally performed via firmware) is way off (particularly the Intensity Scale) so the images that appear on this fine LCD display look washed out...the display produces washed out images and colors in spite of the fact that it has a display with excellent color saturation and contrast. Similarly, a great camera will take poor quality photos if it isn't properly factory calibrated.
He expands on particulars in the blog post.
There is about a 25 percent compression of bright image content, which is quite substantial. This holds for both the Gallery Viewer and the Chrome Browser. On some cheap displays this is done intentionally by the manufacturer because the compression actually makes them appear artificially bright. Here I think it's probably just incompetence by the manufacturer, which is too bad because they messed up a really nice display.
I also want to know about this. The contrast seems very low to me. This display can do better than what it's currently set at.
Wrong thread ?

I have some faith that when morfic makes a trinity kernel for the n7 that some of this will be rectified. Unfortunately, his order was held up. I guess the first step is to find out what code is tweak able in the kernel to actually do this.

I believe I saw a mod which corrected some of the Galaxy Nexus dislpay shortcomings by calibrating it a bit differently. I wonder if the same could be said for the Nexus 7. @piam, I don't know why the reviewers never mentioned this in their reviews, but that's the first thing I noticed when I opened up my Nexus 7, and that was on the stock wallpaper that was on.
I just hope that someone gets a mod out soon, cause its a really great tablet looking cheap just because of the washed out colours.
I find that the home screen is not well optimized but Netflix is looking pretty good. I also find that lowering the brightness helps...which does indicate a calibration issue.
Its pretty good already though...almost quibbling.

Washed out video qualtiy

When I compare the N7 to my Note 2 on the same video the N7 looks very washed out compared to to my Note 2. (or my old Note).
I tried a ROM with the Bravia engine but still did not see much of an improvement.
Does the Bravia engine work on video or just images? What is the deal on that?
Is there anyway to tweak the image quality?

On another note the colors really aren't that "true" on the n7 they are pretty washed out. Comparing the colors of the n7 to my Dell IPS monitor shows just how washed out the n7 is.

[Q] Why is the screen resolution so high?

Honestly, is it really needed?
Wouldn't a 1080p 16:9 screen offer better performance (less work for the GPU), better battery life and still be good enough to browse the web and watch full HD videos?
In every video of the Nexus 10 I've seen, it never looks quite as smooth as the Nexus 4 and 7 do
The Nexus 10 was going up against Apple's Retina display on iPads, which also boast a ridiculous resolution I believe. I could be wrong, but I believe the Nexus 10 has better numbers for both PPI and Resolution.
Yes, @espionage724, it is higher on both counts. It also operates extremely smoothly—it is one of the fastest Android tablets I've ever used, including the Nexus 7. The GPU won't be as much as a problem with Android 4.3, either. Lots of optimizations coming there! See "Android Graphics Performance" on the Android Developers Channel.

I think its to high for now and i preffered much better quality overall ( deeper blacks , better color control , more little or not at all light bleeding, more slim and more battery life ) vs extra ultra mega extrem orgasmic number of pixels .
I need the best resolution , the best screen but only if the device can support it .
Nexus 10 could have done better but i think next nexus will be a Big Bang ..
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
And why did you buy it? I agree with your arguments. But if screen resolution isn't that important to you, maybe there would have been better choices for you to make. I own this tablet since a few days and am completly happy with it. Though I'm lookin forward to the improvements somebody mentioned above for Android 4.3 when can we expect it for nexus devices?

The resolution looks and works great with games, though, but I'm sure a few (Real Racer 3) suffer for it, due to the ridiculous resolution.
Nexus devices has always been about pushing the hardware development and possibilities of devices. My galaxy nexus was the first phone with 720p HD display.

You raise some valid concerns. It all depends if you think the ultra-sharp resolution is worth it. I'm a bit of a videophile and I love how sharp it is, but it does eat into battery life, as you say. I only use it at home, so battery life is not a concern for me.
You are right that 1080p is a much better resolution for most users, which is why no other Android tablet uses such a high resolution. There are some upcoming high-res tablets that have just been announced recently, but nothing else on the market now. Compare that to the Retina iPad, which was available eight months earlier and has sold tens of millions, while estimates are that the Nexus 10 probably still hasn't sold 1 million.
As espionage724 and Herman76 say, google was just looking to push the market forward and respond to the Retina iPad, an effort that has largely failed, though for the valid reasons that you list. Even the Retina iPad had many complaints about overheating and power draw, even though iOS is a more power-efficient OS than Android. Google probably doesn't really care how well the Nexus 10 sells, it's just a tech demo for them, to push others to match the iPad.
For me, it's not really an issue of video/picture quality at all-- above 720p/1080p, it's hard for me to pick out the difference. But for text, that extra bit of crispness makes a huge difference for me. I mainly consume textual content on my devices, and the difference between the Nexus 10 and ASUS Transformer Pad is enormous on this front. Videos? Either or will work for me.

If you're talking about the Transformer Pad TF300T, as your signature seems to indicate, that's because it has a resolution of 1280 X 800, for a PPI of 149. That's a big difference with the Nexus 10's PPI of 300. A 1080p tablet like we're talking about, for example, the Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T with a resolution of 1920 X 1200 at 224 PPI, is not going to show as much of a difference, since the PPI is about 70% of the Nexus 10, instead of 50% with your TF300T.
1080p is probably completely overkill for a smartphone, but it may be the perfect resolution for a tablet, with current technology.

I'm well aware, thanks. With many tablets still being sold with WXGA screens, it becomes a frustrating chore at times, particularly as many people still do not know the difference between full HD and HD.
In any event, 720p to 1080p is noticeable for me in text rendering, and depending on your screen technology of choice (SAMOLED, PenTile, etc.), it can make a perceptible difference.

Right, my point is whether you'd be able to tell the difference for the jump from 1080p to 1600p, which is what's on the Nexus 10. My Zenbook Prime ultrabook has a 13" 1080p screen and the text is plenty sharp. We're debating whether anything beyond 1080p is overkill for a 10" tablet, given that you won't find any video beyond 1080p and you probably won't notice any difference in text, when making the jump to 1600p.

It comes down to text, and it's not really much of a "debate"-- personally, I can make out the difference on a 10" panel, so the resolution bump is good for me, especially over longer periods of time. I'd easily submit though that that varies from user to user, and even then from one use case to another (i.e. extended reading for novels and books/reports, or well-spaced publications).

Talking about the first 720p being the S3. He is correct the Rezound was the first 720p phone by several weeks also it was smaller than the s3 so very high dpi. I had one. The reason I bought the Nexus 10 was the screen resolution. There were already plenty of 10" tablets with a 1080p screen.
