Nexus 4 is here, a few questions - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there, my Nexus 4 just came and it's working well but I have a few questions:
First of all, what things should I look for? E.g. I have a "ratteling" noise.
Also: How can I get my SMS from my old HTC Desire HD to the Nexus 4?
Thanks

The rattling doesn't appear (to me) to be an issue, from the sound of it, I personally think it's the vibration mechanism. Considering mine only rattles if I shake it a specific way.
On to the SMS transferring issue, use this application:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...estore&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
You will want to install this on your Desire HD, run a backup, copy the file from the backup location to your computer. Next you will need to install the application on your Nexus 4, and copy the backup file from your computer, to the backup location on your Nexus 4. On the Nexus 4, choose restore from inside the application, and select the proper backup. From what I know, this should work.

The rattle seems to be normal with this(and other) phones..
My suggestion is to enjoy it and if something bothers you then look it up.. Making it a point to FIND issues is just going to make you paranoid about everything.
You have 1 year warranty, enjoy the phone and take things as they come.

I'm not sure if the HTC Desire HD (with Sense) would store the SMS data in a similar way but I guess it's worth a shot at backing up and restoring. You might run into issues but give it a shot.
MyBackup also is a good one.

Well I normaly use titanium backup but as it's two different phones and two different OS (cyanogenmod on DHD) I wonder if this will cause conflicts ?
Same goes for whatsapp

Rattling is not really an "issue". Looking for trouble is going to get you nothing but trouble.
Also, i used SMS backup+(its free, doesnt require root) to backup/restore all my texts and even the call log. Works great!

[UPDATED] V6 Supercharger NEW UPDATE!!! (beta, but not really)

Just in case you weren't aware, zeppelinrox recently pushed out update9 for his inSANE Supercharger script.
It adds a few cool new features, 1 being the Nitro Lag Nullifier, which many claim increases their phone speeds even MORE than the fixes in Update8. I just tried it a little while ago, and noticed my phone loaded up quick and apps open even quicker now.
Also includes an Engine Flush feature that gives you a quick boost, just like the one you get after you reboot and notice all that extra freed up RAM. Does the same thing w/ No Reboot.
ALSO included is LOCKING ANY APP IN MEMORY, which is definitely useful for many. (haven't tried it yet).
Here it is ladies and germs --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15948434&postcount=1127
I love these scripts this is the first one I tried on ec05 and wow. Fast and smooth

Make sure you reboot your phone at least once a day if you do the Nitro Lag Fix or Engine Flush. It works very well at first but it may cause lag without reboots

I have been jumping around so much that I may need to review but I believe it is a Cache flush and without reboot once a day (it says it when you run the script) it builds up and causes lag. I didn't experience it because I battery swap once a day. My friend did and yanked the script

That seems to make sense, thanks for the info. I've also been noticing my scheduled titanium backup hasn't been running each morning (04:00am) like it's scheduled to.
I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the script as well, or if it's something else. I originally had the script on option 9, then just the other day I changed it to 6, a more balanced setting. I may just remove it completely and see if the backups start to happen when they're supposed to.
The SMS backup I have set to run runs when it should, without fail. I was thinking that maybe the script was killing TB, but since the SMS backup is working, maybe that's not the case?

I think you are dead on here. I pulled it for the same reason last week. I added it back yesterday though. I dont know what determines the priority of app killing but I notice certain things getting killed myself. I may have to dig into this some more because I am testing a kernel and I dont want any conflicts that I could possibly say is kernel related when its not.

Why don't you try using the new option to make any app "Bulletproof" on Titanium? That should do it if it works as advertised.
Otherwise, choosing a less aggressive option than option 9 (especially option 6) should do the trick. I also stay away from the MegaRAM options myself...too hardcore. I feel like a smartphone is meant for multitasking, and this script, if you use it right, makes it even better.
Try running options 2 and 11. Those have been working great for me since I started using them. I used 6 at first, but 2 is just a little more aggressive without really noticing it, so it's more effective. Then 11 just for kicks lol..does no harm

@JC - I just pulled it off myself, to see if it will run tomorrow morning.
@Franky - How do you enable an app to be 'bulletproof'? I have looked around a bit, and haven't found it yet. I may give that a shot, or just set it to different settings using the script as well. I'll certainly take yours into consideration.

couldn't tell you...i haven't used it myself. all i know is that there's an option for it when u run the script. I ran it to see how it worked, and it just detects the apps currently running and allows you to lock any one of them in memory. Not sure how/if it works
I am looking for an app that you can freeze apps that start by themself. Does Titanium Pro cause the phone to trip out or reboot? When I use Bloat Freezer I get the random vibrations and an occasional reboot. I have Autostarts, Bloat Freezer,etc...what do you guys recommend? Sorry for being off topic

Turning the Note into a tablet

I got my Galaxy Note just over a month ago and, so far, love it as it is undoubtedly the best Android device I have ever owned (I only used a HTC Desire before it and that had a very poor storage capacity). The Nexus 7, which was revealed by Google yesterday, is extremely tempting with its low price-tag and rather impressive specifications. But, seeing as I don't have an awful lot of cash, I find it hard to justify a new device for a mere extra 2 inches in screen size. So, for now, I'm looking to optimize my Note as a tablet.
Firstly, I'd like to have a little more screen time. I currently get around 5 hours of screen time, but that isn't as high as the Nexus 7's promised 9 hours of screen time. A larger battery is the most obvious option besides some already attempted battery improving techniques. So, what is the largest size battery I can purchase that will fit into the stock back of the Note? I don't want an increased back to the phone as I plan on buying a protective case.
I love the look of the Zenus case found here. A leather-like case such as that completes the tablet look in my opinion. Yet, I've heard of the small magnet used for the stand on the back of the case causing a problem for S-Pen calibration. Is this issue true with this particular case?
Next, are there any launchers or, as a last resort, ROMs that allow to replicate a launcher similar to that of a tablet. I'm also looking for a Micro SD card to store music and perhaps movies on. Any cheap recommendations?
I also want to fix my contacts book. When I was setting it up, I deleted/hid some SNS contacts from Facebook with phone numbers and now want them back. I've tried showing all contacts or just Facebook ones, but they're not there. Any ideas?

So, how can I safely install that ROM without triggering the brick bug my stock ICS suffers from? Any ideas for my other issues to? Also, will I loose S-Pen Apps and other functionality and all my data from changing ROMs, no? I love the looks of this ROM (seen it before), but I'm only 14 and worried about flashing onto my brand new phone. If I ruined it, I'd be without phone and my parents would kill me.
If you want stock ics tablet, install cm9 rc; then use root explorer or similar to change ro.sf.lcd_density to 213. This is located in system/build.prop. Use either nova or apex launcher. Root your device uses dr ketans guide. Use titanium backup ti backup apps; sms backup and restore for sms, Flash abyss 4.2 redpil kernel wipe data/cache and dalvik cache. Flash cm9, you can use papyrus beta for note taking.
Please be aware there us always an element of risk flashing anything, if your not 100% confident abd have doubts DO NOT INSTALL CUSTOM ROMS

2) Dose skype work on Nexus 7? (Tried a few times and can't get it to work)
3) Is there a way to move the "Dock" and "notification" from the sides and top respectivly to the bottom?
4) I still can't figure out if there is a Doc that works!?
5) Can someone gove me a link to a Car Charger that works, fits well and is cheep?
6) Did I get a defective one or is there NO CAMARA APP?
Thanks for your help.

1. No. Search market for otg no root. (I cant seem to find it at tjhe moment, but it has been discussed at length)
2. Skype works fine for me.
3. Check out the different roms with tablet ui, or the tablet ui mod in dev section.
4. Google or Asus has not released official dock yet. Some other might work. I doubt theres one for using the pogo pins yet.
5. Search Amazon for Nexus 7 charger and find a mobile one that is compatible.

Skype works but the android app is a bit naff (few features, only works in landscape mode and crashes a lot when calling), I use the custom skype version made by a member on here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31041722&postcount=2396
See here for a car charger: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1959543
They didn't include a camera app, probably because the camera is pretty mediocre. It's intended to be used as a webcam and that's about it, doesn't mean you can't use it as a camera though. Search for "camera app" on the play store and get the first result, it lets you view the camera and take pictures.

[Q] Is Nexus 7 supposed to be this way? (laggy)

Nexus 7 32GB is my first android device. Before I bought it, most people were saying that android is finally smooth, project butter and so on. But that's not the case here. I'm on 4.2.2 stock, have currents sync disabled, my storage is only half full, and my Nexus is starting to get on my nerves.
- screen rotation takes exactly 4 seconds, no exception.
- apps sometimes freeze, forcing me to force close them or even reboot occasionally.
- even some simple games, like Dragonvale, run like stop motion in certain segments.
- when I install ANY app, it seems that android service responsible to put icon on my home screen takes 100% CPU time for 10-15 seconds or so.
- when there are app updates, my nexus is unusable. Takes 10+ seconds for any action.
Say what you want about windows phone, but that thing flies. Am I maybe spoiled by it's buttery smoothness so android by comparison irritates me, or is there really something wrong with my Nexus? I already did hard reset once, early on. It did not help. Should I try again? If so, what backup solution is the easiest?
I know I might be asking a lot and that there are threads about this already, but info is scattered, and there are numerous contradicting opinions and advices. Basically I am just not sure if this is how it's supposed to be, or should I try something.
The lag after installing app is there because of R/W being made to internal memory. App's icons on homescreen are being placed by Play. You can disable it in it's settings. But the rest sounds like a rouge app. Are you sure this lag is there even after fresh system installation?

Root, get Franco, disable fsync, enjoy.

How do I detect a rouge app? Task manager? Can you recommend one?
It was slow to start with. Disabling currents sync did not help. And I did do reset in the first few days. Did not help.
Now, it's just even more slower. Perhaps by as much as 50% in some actions, if I can put a number on a subjective impression.

Well if you want better performance... ROMs and kernels are the things to mess with.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
You should probably flash a ROM/kernel for best performance. But if you still don't want to mess with ROMs, reflash the stock rom and reroot it. That's what helped me.
I've had some issues with my phone lagging during/after app update, and i've only recently nailed down the culprit. Turns out it was the Root Uninstaller app that was making backups of older versions of the apps during the update, it ceased after i turned off the option in it's settings (or just uninstall). My guesstimate would be that you have some app that is doing just that. Because my own n7 doesn't noticeably lag even if i try to update many (as much as 10) apps at the same, which usually kills my single-core SGSL into a reboot shortly after trying this.
I think 4.2 is just buggy. It flies for me sometimes and on some devices, and sometimes it crawls horribly. Maybe the next android version will fix this, maybe not
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
This helped me a little (If you don't use Currents then this could help)
1. Go to Settings > Apps > All (swipe right 2 times) > Currents
2. Click "Force Stop"
3. Click "Disable"
It should be now fixed for some of it. Like the earlier posts suggest, maybe reflashing stock ROM or installing a kernel (once you're comfortable) will help for sure.
It seems messing with kernels and roms is the best way to do it.
And even though I'm asking this on XDA, I'm not really comfortable with that, especially considering that I've come across the word "bricked" many a times. Especially since I have almost two years of warranty left.
I'll give it a thought and see if I'll go along. It depends how irritating the lag becomes. But by the looks of it, I'll end up with a windows 8/blue tablet next time around, when the next gen silicone from AMD and Intel is ready. I'm much more comfortable with windows environment.
AW: [Q] Is Nexus 7 supposed to be this way? (laggy)
If you're having a lot of apps installed you can get ram problems. Some apps are running in the background even if they don't need to. If you wanna know which apps those are simply go to apps and swipe to the second panel. There you can see which asps are running in the background .You should delete them. If you don't want to do that simply download the app Greenify
(You should have more than 200mb free)

Get rid of your Nexus and buy a bloody surface then?
In regards to your question, if you've Rooted but cannot install Adaway then it seems you haven't rooted correctly.
This may be the source of your issues.
As explained before, factory reset, re-root and then if you really wanna see it fly take our advice.
A good start is Paranoid Android and Faux123 Kernel (I've been using this combo since I bought my nexus, and yes I've tried other combo's I just can't stay away). Paranoid is an epic ROM, and IMO Faux cannot be beaten. He finds the absolute perfect point between performance and battery !!.
Unless you seriously can't follow directions you won't brick your device. People throw that term around when they are far from bricked. Just make sure you understand the steps of anything you are doing and use good sense. If things go sideways, don't just start doing things blindly. Research the problem you are having, and ask for help if you need it.
But you shouldn't have to run a custom rom to get smooth performance. Like has been suggested I'd go back to stock. Root, and add things back as you need them. See if it runs smooth with only a basic set of apps installed.
Your N7 will be fastest on a custom ROM/kernel. But it should be perfectly usable on a stock setup.

RT is a joke, and PRO is too expensive and has awful battery life. I'll wait and see how temash and baytrail turn out to be. But that's besides the point, since I'll still keep nexus as an ultra-mobile device.
In any case, can I backup all the data, reset, and get EVERYTHING back, or will I need to do something manually? I'll definitely try to reset/re-root.
But I don't see what I did wrong. I mean, I can install every app on the market that requires root

It honestly shouldn't lag like that. Even bone stock.
One thing you can do right away is go into developer settings (click 7 times on Build Number in About Tablet to enable) and change all animation settings to.5 or to none.
DL Root Checker, or just try to use any root app to see if you actually do have root. Even with the wonderful toolkits (which will also save your bacon if you get into a bootloop) getting root to stick can be tricky...you may have to run it a couple of times.
But the best results will come if you flash a custom rom and kernel. if you like a tweaked stock experience, try CleanRom Inheritance. It uses the Aroma installer, so it's very easy and customizable. It can be found under Android Development.

You can use titanium backup. It there others like carbon. But titanium has been around the longest and it's my preferred way. Requires root, and it should warn you at start up if you aren't rooted correctly.
I would do as others suggested and just restore basic apps after factory reboot and re root. Then slowly restore others to see if you notice other problems along the way.
Also, if you didn't know. You can install kernels without wiping tablet and changing the whole Rom. I would definitely try that eventually too.
One more thing to note. Don't judge android on chrome (not that you mentioned it, but I know a lot of newbies have). It's one of the slowest browsers. It has tons of great features which I love, but do slow compared to most others. I wish I wasn't so addicted to its syncing.
Thanks to everyone on advices.
1) root checker says I do not have proper root. Now that I think about it, I did update my Nexus 7 from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2. I guess that also removed root.
2) I will reset. I don't really have any messages or photos or app data that is not already in the cloud that I need to backup.
3) I'll try to gradually install everything app by app to see if it's a rouge app.
4) I'll than revive this thread with my results. Though I doubt I'll get to doing all that in the next few days.
Again, thanks everyone!

[Ununtu Touch][2 days review]

I had tried UT for 2 days and this is my conclusion: it's a fantastic system!
I based my vote in: UI, speed, connection(s), apps, others features.
UI 10/10
Ubuntu Touch have the most beautiful UI in the universe and I simply love it
Speed 6/10
Speed isn't the force point of UT (it is in an alpha build, it is laggy)
Connection 5/10
Gps and bluetooth have only screen image but they don't work really. 3g and wifi work quite well but they aren't fully fixed
Apps 5/10
The coreapps work very well but there aren't lots of apps for now (but you can find XDA and a Qr-Code reader)
Other Features 7/10
I love terminal because it use commands like ubuntu desktop and you can upgrade yours app quickly. System setting doesn't work correctly and system update doesm't work (it say there are a 20130834 update and it normally fail the download)
I wish I will try a stable image as soon as possible.
Cheers.

I've been running Ubuntu Touch on my nexus 7(2012) for about 2-3 months.
I've had painful moments, but overall and with customization and hacking, I absolutely love it.
Also I'm Currently trying the 10in experience on my HP Touchpad with Ubuntu Touch 13.10.

Some questions:
-Is it possible to run UT in dual boot with android on a nexus (nexus 4) device ??
-Any chance to get whatsapp working on UT? There was a program long time ago but does not know if it still works.
-Could you make a walk through video with the actual status of UT?

I have been asking this for months with no luck. They have a dual boot for nexus 7, so I do not see why no one would port it over to the 4. : \

On my Galaxy Nexus I also would like to see a dual boot but I think I'll never see it...
I have been following Ubuntu Touch since the beginning last February, I have a dedicated device (Galaxy Nexus) to which I've flashed versions countless times. I read the forums and comb the web for news. I read blogs and learn tips for working with UT. I am excited for when it will be ready for prime time and am enthusiastic about the possibilities.
I ran UT on my GNex for 2 days (September 2nd & 3rd) using the 20130828.1 image...
The ringer volume is frustratingly low and doesn't change with the volume keys or on-screen tools.
The only way to connect to voicemail is to dial your own number.
There is no push notification for missed calls or voicemail.
The Gmail app looks like something from 10 years ago - there is no push notification and you can only be logged onto one account at a time.
The browser is mobile only. Screens larger than 4.5" deserve a desktop mode.
My cellular data kept dropping out - data had to be toggled off then on to reestablish a connection (T-Mo USA).
The clock on the lockscreen lagged behind system time whenever I woke the phone.
There are no maps or navigation.
Weather is just a bare bones temp and cartoonish conditions drawing.
Many, many PIM connectors and lots and lots of settings are just place holders without function still.
Why for the love of all that is holy do they have to keep including mock music and mock video images? Please leave it out - it drives me insane and I have to clear it by hand from every build via terminal and sudo rm. GRRRRRRAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHH.
They killed off the people home page - way more useful on a communicator than a music or video page. Music and video pages make huge sense for tablets and are just OK for phones. Phones are built as comm devices and need the instant connect that the people home page promised.
It isn't ready yet.
I have patience. I'm not expecting perfection on a preview and understand we aren't really even at a Beta release yet. I just don't think people who say they are using it as a daily driver are giving a clear picture to those who haven't used Ubuntu Touch much, if at all, and there is no point in gilding the lily.
