[Ununtu Touch][2 days review] - Ubuntu Touch General

I had tried UT for 2 days and this is my conclusion: it's a fantastic system!
I based my vote in: UI, speed, connection(s), apps, others features.
UI 10/10
Ubuntu Touch have the most beautiful UI in the universe and I simply love it
Speed 6/10
Speed isn't the force point of UT (it is in an alpha build, it is laggy)
Connection 5/10
Gps and bluetooth have only screen image but they don't work really. 3g and wifi work quite well but they aren't fully fixed
Apps 5/10
The coreapps work very well but there aren't lots of apps for now (but you can find XDA and a Qr-Code reader)
Other Features 7/10
I love terminal because it use commands like ubuntu desktop and you can upgrade yours app quickly. System setting doesn't work correctly and system update doesm't work (it say there are a 20130834 update and it normally fail the download)
I wish I will try a stable image as soon as possible.
Cheers.

I've been running Ubuntu Touch on my nexus 7(2012) for about 2-3 months.
I've had painful moments, but overall and with customization and hacking, I absolutely love it.
Also I'm Currently trying the 10in experience on my HP Touchpad with Ubuntu Touch 13.10.

Some questions:
-Is it possible to run UT in dual boot with android on a nexus (nexus 4) device ??
-Any chance to get whatsapp working on UT? There was a program long time ago but does not know if it still works.
-Could you make a walk through video with the actual status of UT?

I have been asking this for months with no luck. They have a dual boot for nexus 7, so I do not see why no one would port it over to the 4. : \

On my Galaxy Nexus I also would like to see a dual boot but I think I'll never see it...

I have been following Ubuntu Touch since the beginning last February, I have a dedicated device (Galaxy Nexus) to which I've flashed versions countless times. I read the forums and comb the web for news. I read blogs and learn tips for working with UT. I am excited for when it will be ready for prime time and am enthusiastic about the possibilities.
I ran UT on my GNex for 2 days (September 2nd & 3rd) using the 20130828.1 image...
The ringer volume is frustratingly low and doesn't change with the volume keys or on-screen tools.
The only way to connect to voicemail is to dial your own number.
There is no push notification for missed calls or voicemail.
The Gmail app looks like something from 10 years ago - there is no push notification and you can only be logged onto one account at a time.
The browser is mobile only. Screens larger than 4.5" deserve a desktop mode.
My cellular data kept dropping out - data had to be toggled off then on to reestablish a connection (T-Mo USA).
The clock on the lockscreen lagged behind system time whenever I woke the phone.
There are no maps or navigation.
Weather is just a bare bones temp and cartoonish conditions drawing.
Many, many PIM connectors and lots and lots of settings are just place holders without function still.
Why for the love of all that is holy do they have to keep including mock music and mock video images? Please leave it out - it drives me insane and I have to clear it by hand from every build via terminal and sudo rm. GRRRRRRAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHH.
They killed off the people home page - way more useful on a communicator than a music or video page. Music and video pages make huge sense for tablets and are just OK for phones. Phones are built as comm devices and need the instant connect that the people home page promised.
It isn't ready yet.
I have patience. I'm not expecting perfection on a preview and understand we aren't really even at a Beta release yet. I just don't think people who say they are using it as a daily driver are giving a clear picture to those who haven't used Ubuntu Touch much, if at all, and there is no point in gilding the lily.

First impressions

Having flashed and played around with Ubuntu on my N4 I have found that it looks good but, as you would expect from the sort of build, that it is barely usable.
The browser app only produces a white screen and most things are generally broken, to be honest, I'm not in the least bit surprised seeing as it's a dev build but it would be nice if things worked a bit better.
I also noticed there was no way of accessing settings of any sort, aside from network settings. This may well be an oversight on my part but I did dig quite a bit.
I have not had a chance to play with the SDK as I'm on windows and can't find anyway to install/use it (and I really can't be bothered) so I have no comments on that.
From what I could tell, performance was pretty good, but that may just be the N4, and I noticed no huge drain in battery when I restored my CM10 backup, aside from what you'd expect from a backup, flash and restore.
I couldn't figure out how to use the docking mode (nor do I know if it's even in this version) so I also cannot comment on that.
However, I think I will be sticking to CM10 for now and I'll wait for a more usable version to come out before I begin to use Ubuntu more often.
How has everyone else found it?

Thanks. The release notes indicate that the browser should work.

Looks good
I installed Ubuntu on my galaxy nexus and while it does look good, it is very laggy and slow to respond to touch commands. Browser works fine but very slowly. I too did not find any "settings" menu or options. The camera works just fine and so does the gallery. Power button does the usual lock/unlock action, but the volume buttons seem to do nothing. Haven't heard any sounds on the device either. Will keep exploring the OS but so far, it really does feel like a preview, as Canonical has described.
Calls and sms work, and so does wifi. When i plugged in the headset during a call however, it did not work at all.
It is available for the Verizon s3 on RootzWiki just Google it.

One other thing I noticed when I was on my commute to school was that I couldn't turn off wifi, which did not help my battery, I do still really like the ui and I'm sure that it will be really good when it is finished

The browser worked for me, and I'm on a galaxy nexus.
You can access volume controls and brightness controls the same way you can network (note brightness is under battery indicator). There is no way to set date and time except from command line via adb or ssh. Out of curiosity what other settings would others like to access?
For the SDK, although I can't use QtCreator I am able to edit and compile code from a Windows 7 computer on the phone itself, using ssh with vim qmake, and even run some GUI programs using an X server, like gedit and meld.
Docking mode is unavailable, as far as I can tell. It probably will not be available until Mir is released, since I think the rootless X is being worked on for Mir.
I think Ubuntu Touch has a lot of potential.

Care to share what monumental changes you were expecting? I see a lot of people disappointed by the update, but they don't voice what their expectations were.
You might do well to read the change log: http://developer.android.com/about/versions/kitkat.html. Obviously things like default SMS and translucent nav and status bars won't make it to the Nexus 7, but those weren't really big deal changes anyway. Bigger, useful changes happened under the hood. Lower system requirements and memory management improvements means 4.4 is lighter and leaner. Host Card Emulation means that things like Google Wallet are no longer reliant on a "secure element" in the device. The printing framework means any app can print any type of content using cloud printing, like Google Cloud Print. Immersive mode means nice changes for full screen apps.
Etc., etc. Just go take a look at that change log and come back and say that, "Absolutely nothing changed."
All updates will probably be like this from now on because they have to cater for five year old devices.

Well, except for the loss of the flash plug-in.
I love this update
+ 25% battery life: my previous 7. 5 hours average is now 9-10.
-Another change is the ability to get the translucent bars (with Nova launcher beta)
- I had 2-3 random reboot per week (now it happened only once in the last 3 weeks)
- touchscreen improvement : no more sticky and ghost touch (even if the multi touch issue is still there)
You can argue that it's more bugs fixes and optimization than a big upgrade, it's true. But it's a big improvement for this tablet according to me.

Uh. What? They dropped support for the Galaxy Nexus, which is only 2 years old at this point. Technically they would have supported it still if TI had updated their chipset drivers, but it is still hardly a 5 year old device. They only officially support the Nexus 4 (1 year old) and the Nexus 7 2012 (1 year and a bit old). If manufacturers like Samsung or HTC choose to support legacy devices, that's their thing, not Google. Google provides the source. Samsung, HTC, and Moto are only supporting their more recent lineups too.
Maybe do some research before you start spouting off on the Internet.

Are you for real? All you're essentially complaining about is the fact that there is no visual changes. The reason there aren't many visual changes is because they didn't include the Google Experience Launcher that debuted on the Nexus 5. I would direct you here for some perspective: http://www.randomphantasmagoria.com/can-we-all-just-shut-up-about-the-google-experience-launcher/
Also, people, translucent status bars are available on EVERY NEXUS DEVICE EXCEPT THE NEXUS 10 (due to graphics driver issues). The thing is, the app has to specifically request the translucent bar. The reason the translucent bars don't show up on the home screens is because the other Nexus devices don't include the Google Experience Launcher. The GEL requests translucent bars. The legacy launcher does not. If you want translucent status bars on the home screen, sideload the Google Experience Launcher. Done.

My favorite part of this update is the Immersion mode for Reading Ebooks & the new 4.4 default Email App.
I think kitkat is one of the most exciting releases since ice cream sandwich but most changes are indeed under the hood and not officially ready yet, like ART but kitkat is an awesome start for a new future for Android.

I can't comment on the VPN issues, but why is no SMS support on the NEXUS 7 TABLET a reason to dislike the update? It's a tablet. You have a data plan on it, not a talk and text plan. No tablets have SMS support out of the box. There are mods, etc. that you can use to get SMS support.

we are talking about the UPDATE.
4.3 -> SMS
4.4 -> NO SMS
That's the point. I lost something after the update.
When my phone battery dies I often use normal sms from the tablet (I've a girlfriend that doesn't have an internet plan because she studies in a foreign country)

Yup this update sucks.
- It's faster
- More battery life
- Less services running in the background
Yup horrible on this end.

I don't know about worst, but I wish I hadn't updated. Battery is not a big issue with me as I mainly use it at home where I can keep it charged. The printing option is nice but not something that I can't live without. I haven't noticed any increased speed. I am stock so my issues apply to non power users who just want a first rate tablet without having to mod it, which it was before the update:
1. Browsers doesn't automatically fit text to screen like 4.3 did. I now have to double tap.
2. There is a slight stick/lag in browser when scrolling. Before it was smooth as butter.
3. To prevent major lag/freeze, I've had to cut off location services.
4. Touchscreen is sometimes non responsive, particularly the app drawer button. I use Apex (to hide non used apps) but it doesn't seem to be Apex as it also happens with the stock launcher. The only way to get it working again is by clearing default.
5. Not major but I liked the blue status bar icons in 4.3 better than the white.
6. I liked the 4.3 email app better.
7. Loss of flash. I know flash is obsolete, but there are still many websites that still use it and I liked the option of using my preferred video player as opposed to being forced to HTML5.

I somewhat doubt it. My N7 LTE came with 4.3 and the "reduced" SMS function. It can receive SMS, same as in 4.4, but i had to install a SMS app to send them. Apart from testing i never used it to send SMS. It's a bloody tablet...

I had the opposite effect, sitting "idle" for 4 hours the battery is drained down to %20, google services was @ 74%, re-booting didn't solve it. Sitting idle with 4.3 it last 5 full days; lastly I really, really liked the way the Staus icon would be blue for secured network, and white for unsecured network, showed up/down too and would turn grayish when your connected but not repsonding....and the blue stood out just enough to catch your eye so that you could tell at a glance what is going on. I dumped KitCrap and went back to 4.3

I will report over the next 7-10 days. Too busy at the moment for an in-depth review.
I have only removed it from the box, updated the OS and now charging the battery.
Following views:
- Hardware better quality than I expected from the initial online Jolla reviews, feels solid
- Screen quality not great, perhaps will improve after a period of "burn in" but the resolution does not look good
- On-screen keyboard and one handed use also easier than I expected
- I like the UI, simple and clever in some areas
- Gestures, I am still getting used to these as I also have a Blackberry Z10 and palm Pre which also are feature based
- Speedy web browser
Battery charger was for Europe, not that helpful for us in the UK!

I also got my Jolla 2 days ago. I'm really impressed with a lot of aspects. I concur on the quality of the hardware, the UI, the gestures and the beautiful browser. I personally think the screen looks great. I know the PPI isn't huge but I honestly don't think it need be any better. Text is clear and nice to read. However, I am not getting along that well with the screen. I'm used to swype for android and clicking those little letters is taking some getting used to again.
I've got apps from the Amazon app store working nicely such as Facebook and Temple Run 2. However, I am having some issues with things like connecting to wifi. Also can't seem to get google calendars syncing whereas my contacts have worked perfectly.

Yes, they do. They appear normally in the app drawer and Jolla shows the software Android control buttons when Andr. app is running. I didn´t notice any lagging or low performance of those I tried so far. They behave just like on Android, e.g. Skype can make calls as you would normally expect, youtube client works fine. I´m just not sure whether the files stored in device can be shared between Sailfish and Android apps, e.g. I don´t see the contents of SD card with an Android music player.
I hope there will be more native Sailfish apps, Sailfish is the charming aspect of Jolla, not the Android apps.
Got mine today and love it! The UI is so nice and it runs fast and stable.

Tested many many Android apps today. You can install a launcher and use widgets. Works just fine. The speed is impressive - very fast. Tested on Riptide GP 1 and the game looks nice - no lags.
Tried to get the Google Framework (Google Services) working but without luck. The Alien Dalvik is running Android 4.1.2 and is not rooted. You don´t have "Settings.apk" so you can´t setup stuff. And it was impossible for me getting the native Android settings working.
I have made some thoughts while testing. If it is possible to get root on Alien it would be possible to flash the GApps from CM. So there would be a "full" Android.
Can any of you with Jollas respond to this thread?

one day, even if you not using data 3G/4G/Wifi connection

3 weeks ago I offered a Jolla Phone to my wife because this is the last Finnish phone Today an Finnish lady abroad deserve it .
Moreover I have a LG G2 so i will here compare quickly both of them.
- the Jolla have more quality Built : materials used are better
- the Jolla have a worst screen, not only size !
- the Jolla as less autonomy (On day of use)
- the interfaces are totally different expect the knock-on feature.
- Sailfish OS is really a new way of using a phone, gestures are centric. as a result Sailfish OS is really minimalistic compare to android
- Sailfish OS seems note to be totally developed : to use your Jolla phone you need to be Geeky (or have a husband who is so)

5.1.1 Existence has been leaked, what do we want?

So 5.1.1 was leaked on a Google Dev page today (Source)
What would we want to see in this Lollipop update for the N6 seeming we know nothing about whats coming?
Me personally? A bit better battery life (I think the second .1 indicates new kernel?) and to clean up some of the bugs.

probably nothing beneficial for the N6... looks like it's only going to be for the N7 and N9... much like the 5.0.2 release was never "official" for the N6.
If its truly LMY47S, then it is not really 5.1.1.
That has the same build date code as 5.1.
I want faster responding sensors. Auto dimming, proximity sensor for phone calls sped up. Damn thing takes forever! As does auto rotate.
Want a rocketship for blasting off to Mars! Seems my Nexus6 has about everything else!
I'd like my battery to last over 9000 minutes of screen on time.
Three wishes, and none of them for an iPhone, M9, or S6.
Better battery optimization, improved camera and radio, and ability to switch to a dark Material theme.
Performance improvement for Camera, Dialer and occasional dropped frames in animations.
I would like google to unlock the notification led xD
Faster booting up and more options when shutting down.
Screen resolution options.
That's it for now, only had it for 2 days. Still learning about lollipop, I came from an galaxy s3.
Sexy wallpaper
- Notification lights back by default (non-rooted)
- (Better) hardware encryption for faster boot-up
Fix the carkit a2dp crashing when connected to a Bluetooth low energy device. I should not have to put my moto 360 in airplane mode every time I drive my car...

To you and others in this thread - You're on XDA and many of the feature requests are available in most custom ROMs. "I don't run rooted ROMs" or "I'd like those features to be in stock ROM" will probably be your reply, to which I will say, why are you commenting on a developer / Android customization forum?

Why would Google implement something that is unnecessary and could cause problems? There hasn't been any need to close apps for quite a few iterations of android (actually an understatement)
With all these 'new' versions I find it interesting that N7 seems to be the problem child they can't get right.
I just want WiFi calling

Well it's using a tegra chip. All other nexus are using Qualcomm chips. Minus the 9 which is also late to the party.
The N6 is already a great device. What would make it stand above the rest is for it to be natively as smooth and lag free as the N5 is and to add some minor battery life improvements.

Axon 7 Mini Community

Any review... What's your take on the device.... Tq...

Well probably not a complete review. First of all it's a great phone.
- Display Full HD with great colors, who needs more?
- Overall performance, not playing game so not much to say here. Definitly a better feel then the OnePlus Two I was useing before. Can't really pinpoint why...
- Camera is good for everyday use. Nothing to exciting here.
- QuickCharge 2 is great, though I miss Qi charging (why is that not a thing anymore? Even Ikea sells qi chargers now...)
- Sound is probably the best I ever heard on a mobile
Just two annoyances:
1. You have press the freaking bell on the lockscreen.
2. A builtin task killer!? Why? Killed my alarm clock twice before I found out what was going on.
what about audio chip? the same as greater?
Yeah Audio is by far the best I had on a mobile. This is true for loudspeaker, calls and headphones.
Chipset here is supposed to be the sames as with the normal Axon 7.
I just encountered the first real issue:
Problem: When speakerphone is enabled the other party can not hear you.
Solution: Disable "OK Google" detection.
can you make few photos in day and night? and video for example street view to check the sensitivity of the microphone- full HD, give link to mega.nz

Can you elaborate on that? How can I configure the task killer / keep the alarm from getting killed?
Well, the Task Killer is hiding under Energy Settings. You can select not to kill it there. But still it took me two days to figure out why it was happening.
About the Fotos. Let's see how the weather is outside the next couple of days. I'm pretty sure there are already a couple of youtube Videos out there, which already tested the camera thouroghly.

Are you using the built in clock for alarm or a third party app? The built in clock does not show up in the app list in the energy settings for me.

Oh I was using Google Clock when this happened. Stock worked fine Out of the box
Hi guys, I received my Axon 7 Mini yesterday. From all the information on the internet I was under the impression that the device supports 802.11 ac (5Ghz) but now it doesn't seem to find my network. Do I have a defective unit or can you guys confirm that?
Thanks,
rien
How is the battery life?.. What SOT can u get... Tq

As for me battery life is fine. It's about 2 days in average use.
Can't confirm about AC-wifi. I'm still using old N-standart router.
Hi,
I am using the Axon 7 mini now for a few days.
First of all, I'm very happy with this phone. But I have some problems.
When I tap on top of the screen the phone moves my apps and the are sorted another way I want them.
Next thing, all of the movies I receive in Whatsapp stop after a few seconds. But the sound goes on. So you have to wait and at some point (video ends) the sound is killed, then the video starts running again but without sound. Is anyone else here with a similar problem? I just hoped to receive a custom rom or something else for the phone because I think there is much potential in this thing.
I was looking at this phone to recommend to a friend, but I'm distressed that there isn't much of a community here. Should I be worried about recommending this phone? It really looks like a good deal for someone with a budget of $300.
Look at axon mini thread here on XDA. Locked bootloader, root after a few months and only by some Chinese stuff, not working on updates by manufacturer, lack of custom roms... That's the major thing you should consider before buy. I think that's not worth $300 +/-.
Maybe if phone would not have SW issues, but I don't believe ZTE could do it.
Nevertheless, axon mini had major price drop after several months on market - from more than $300 to $180.
Hey all. I've had an Axon 7 Mini for a few weeks now and have been writing pros, cons, etc. about it on the ZTE USA community forums -- I can't post a link because I'm new here
I'm in the UK, and shipped mine in from Germany. I have the same model as the OP, but the grey version, with V1.0.0B02 software. It hasn't had any software updates since I've had it, but I'm hoping the Mini will also get an update to make the notification bell optional (and the LED customisable if possible).
I consistently get around 5.5hrs screen on time, but this drops if the location settings are on. It has great coverage on the UK giffgaff network, and I didn't have to edit any APN settings for 4G and MMS to work.
Thanks to all who have posted. Any info about RF reception? Many complained the Axon 7 has poor RF and WiFi reception.
Also, how's the sound on headphones? Can you tell us if it has WiFi AC (5 GHz)? This is still unclear to me.
A bit disheartened to see a complete lack of support for this thing so far, as I was looking for something a bit smaller to replace my LG V10--but I like my root.
It will get updates, probably Android 7.0 pretty soon, the thing is you guys have gotten the phone so fast, lol. You'll have updates during these months don't worry.
