Hey all new to nexus 7 but not to android. Lucked up/cursed my way into a new nexus 7 32 GB. And had a few questions that search did not make clear.
1) Do you have to root to get the use of an OTG dongle for memory expantion? (SD card, external HDD ect.)
2) Dose skype work on Nexus 7? (Tried a few times and can't get it to work)
3) Is there a way to move the "Dock" and "notification" from the sides and top respectivly to the bottom?
4) I still can't figure out if there is a Doc that works!?
5) Can someone gove me a link to a Car Charger that works, fits well and is cheep?
6) Did I get a defective one or is there NO CAMARA APP?
Thanks for your help.

1. No. Search market for otg no root. (I cant seem to find it at tjhe moment, but it has been discussed at length)
2. Skype works fine for me.
3. Check out the different roms with tablet ui, or the tablet ui mod in dev section.
4. Google or Asus has not released official dock yet. Some other might work. I doubt theres one for using the pogo pins yet.
5. Search Amazon for Nexus 7 charger and find a mobile one that is compatible.

6. There's no camera app for a reason... are you honestly going to flip the device around and try to blindly take pics with it? If so, you can install one.

Thanks folks for the quick reply !
FAST, Fast , fast.!
Skype works but the android app is a bit naff (few features, only works in landscape mode and crashes a lot when calling), I use the custom skype version made by a member on here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31041722&postcount=2396
See here for a car charger: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1959543
They didn't include a camera app, probably because the camera is pretty mediocre. It's intended to be used as a webcam and that's about it, doesn't mean you can't use it as a camera though. Search for "camera app" on the play store and get the first result, it lets you view the camera and take pictures.

Hey there, my Nexus 4 just came and it's working well but I have a few questions:
First of all, what things should I look for? E.g. I have a "ratteling" noise.
Also: How can I get my SMS from my old HTC Desire HD to the Nexus 4?
Thanks

The rattling doesn't appear (to me) to be an issue, from the sound of it, I personally think it's the vibration mechanism. Considering mine only rattles if I shake it a specific way.
On to the SMS transferring issue, use this application:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...estore&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
You will want to install this on your Desire HD, run a backup, copy the file from the backup location to your computer. Next you will need to install the application on your Nexus 4, and copy the backup file from your computer, to the backup location on your Nexus 4. On the Nexus 4, choose restore from inside the application, and select the proper backup. From what I know, this should work.
The rattle seems to be normal with this(and other) phones..
My suggestion is to enjoy it and if something bothers you then look it up.. Making it a point to FIND issues is just going to make you paranoid about everything.
You have 1 year warranty, enjoy the phone and take things as they come.
I'm not sure if the HTC Desire HD (with Sense) would store the SMS data in a similar way but I guess it's worth a shot at backing up and restoring. You might run into issues but give it a shot.
MyBackup also is a good one.
Well I normaly use titanium backup but as it's two different phones and two different OS (cyanogenmod on DHD) I wonder if this will cause conflicts ?
Same goes for whatsapp

Rattling is not really an "issue". Looking for trouble is going to get you nothing but trouble.
Also, i used SMS backup+(its free, doesnt require root) to backup/restore all my texts and even the call log. Works great!

Having flashed and played around with Ubuntu on my N4 I have found that it looks good but, as you would expect from the sort of build, that it is barely usable.
The browser app only produces a white screen and most things are generally broken, to be honest, I'm not in the least bit surprised seeing as it's a dev build but it would be nice if things worked a bit better.
I also noticed there was no way of accessing settings of any sort, aside from network settings. This may well be an oversight on my part but I did dig quite a bit.
I have not had a chance to play with the SDK as I'm on windows and can't find anyway to install/use it (and I really can't be bothered) so I have no comments on that.
From what I could tell, performance was pretty good, but that may just be the N4, and I noticed no huge drain in battery when I restored my CM10 backup, aside from what you'd expect from a backup, flash and restore.
I couldn't figure out how to use the docking mode (nor do I know if it's even in this version) so I also cannot comment on that.
However, I think I will be sticking to CM10 for now and I'll wait for a more usable version to come out before I begin to use Ubuntu more often.
How has everyone else found it?

Looks good
I installed Ubuntu on my galaxy nexus and while it does look good, it is very laggy and slow to respond to touch commands. Browser works fine but very slowly. I too did not find any "settings" menu or options. The camera works just fine and so does the gallery. Power button does the usual lock/unlock action, but the volume buttons seem to do nothing. Haven't heard any sounds on the device either. Will keep exploring the OS but so far, it really does feel like a preview, as Canonical has described.
Calls and sms work, and so does wifi. When i plugged in the headset during a call however, it did not work at all.
It is available for the Verizon s3 on RootzWiki just Google it.

The browser worked for me, and I'm on a galaxy nexus.
You can access volume controls and brightness controls the same way you can network (note brightness is under battery indicator). There is no way to set date and time except from command line via adb or ssh. Out of curiosity what other settings would others like to access?
For the SDK, although I can't use QtCreator I am able to edit and compile code from a Windows 7 computer on the phone itself, using ssh with vim qmake, and even run some GUI programs using an X server, like gedit and meld.
Docking mode is unavailable, as far as I can tell. It probably will not be available until Mir is released, since I think the rootless X is being worked on for Mir.
I think Ubuntu Touch has a lot of potential.

I had tried UT for 2 days and this is my conclusion: it's a fantastic system!
I based my vote in: UI, speed, connection(s), apps, others features.
UI 10/10
Ubuntu Touch have the most beautiful UI in the universe and I simply love it
Speed 6/10
Speed isn't the force point of UT (it is in an alpha build, it is laggy)
Connection 5/10
Gps and bluetooth have only screen image but they don't work really. 3g and wifi work quite well but they aren't fully fixed
Apps 5/10
The coreapps work very well but there aren't lots of apps for now (but you can find XDA and a Qr-Code reader)
Other Features 7/10
I love terminal because it use commands like ubuntu desktop and you can upgrade yours app quickly. System setting doesn't work correctly and system update doesm't work (it say there are a 20130834 update and it normally fail the download)
I wish I will try a stable image as soon as possible.
Cheers.

Some questions:
-Is it possible to run UT in dual boot with android on a nexus (nexus 4) device ??
-Any chance to get whatsapp working on UT? There was a program long time ago but does not know if it still works.
-Could you make a walk through video with the actual status of UT?

On my Galaxy Nexus I also would like to see a dual boot but I think I'll never see it...
I have been following Ubuntu Touch since the beginning last February, I have a dedicated device (Galaxy Nexus) to which I've flashed versions countless times. I read the forums and comb the web for news. I read blogs and learn tips for working with UT. I am excited for when it will be ready for prime time and am enthusiastic about the possibilities.
I ran UT on my GNex for 2 days (September 2nd & 3rd) using the 20130828.1 image...
The ringer volume is frustratingly low and doesn't change with the volume keys or on-screen tools.
The only way to connect to voicemail is to dial your own number.
There is no push notification for missed calls or voicemail.
The Gmail app looks like something from 10 years ago - there is no push notification and you can only be logged onto one account at a time.
The browser is mobile only. Screens larger than 4.5" deserve a desktop mode.
My cellular data kept dropping out - data had to be toggled off then on to reestablish a connection (T-Mo USA).
The clock on the lockscreen lagged behind system time whenever I woke the phone.
There are no maps or navigation.
Weather is just a bare bones temp and cartoonish conditions drawing.
Many, many PIM connectors and lots and lots of settings are just place holders without function still.
Why for the love of all that is holy do they have to keep including mock music and mock video images? Please leave it out - it drives me insane and I have to clear it by hand from every build via terminal and sudo rm. GRRRRRRAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHH.
They killed off the people home page - way more useful on a communicator than a music or video page. Music and video pages make huge sense for tablets and are just OK for phones. Phones are built as comm devices and need the instant connect that the people home page promised.
It isn't ready yet.
I have patience. I'm not expecting perfection on a preview and understand we aren't really even at a Beta release yet. I just don't think people who say they are using it as a daily driver are giving a clear picture to those who haven't used Ubuntu Touch much, if at all, and there is no point in gilding the lily.

Oh damn! Finally!
I happen to spend a lot of time defending my rooting and modding as practical and making my device more powerful. Yesterday however, I couldn't defend one "because I can" action.
I pulled out an old USB floppy drive, inserted a disk, mounted with stick mount and added a whopping 1.44 mb of storage to my N7. All I wanted to know is whether or not it could be done.
Doing this got me wondering how many others use their device to do something completely pointless for nothing but the amusement/interest of it?
I replaced some of my system UI sounds with sounds from a Star Trek Computer sound board. Now, when I unlock my N7, it greets me with the Enterprise computer saying "command codes verified". When I turn the screen off, it says "standby". Finally, when I place it on my wireless charger, it says "emergency power engaged". Why? Because I can.

I basically did the same thing but with Metal Gear Solid sounds. I use the codec call sound to become my ring tone (on my s2) and the typical metal gear solid sound effects for various tones like the touchscreen sound, and for notifications. Makes my gadgets feel more customize. I might also get the command and conquer "welcome back commander sound byte" when I unlock my tablet.

Because I can - WOL and Locale
Using the amazing utility Locale and the "WOL Wake on WAN LAN utility", I have my NAS sent a WOL signal every time I come back home. Since I carry my Nexus 7 to and from work, this results in the NAS turning on when I come home at night from work. No need to g into my home office to turn on equipment - I can watch the videos on the NAS right away.
Why - because I can!

Sorry for posting it here for the simple reason that I'm new here and hence not able to post anything in the development section. Nice work here! Tested on a TW T8585 LEO512 with DataOnExt and almost everything is working here: smooth transitions, working sound and HDA (not perfect, i.e. defective 720p decoding but useable with lower definition), seemingly working SD mounting (test not done yet), smooth Rosie and fast WiFi/3G (if only the latter didn't crash that often).
Nevertheless, problems/bugs are as follows:
1. Bluetooth detectable but no working scan nor successful pairing.
2. Camcorder crashes upon mode changing/simply doesn't work.
3. Long pressing hardware home button doesn't give background management
Back to the title. Please check your update_script and look for the 49* lines with a text editor (I suggest Jota+), delete the doubled parentheses, repack, flash and enjoy!
Okay even more exact:
493delete("/data/framework/HTCDev.odex"));
494delete("/data/framework/HTCExtension.odex"));
495delete("/data/framework/framework.odex"));
Look for these
And please, could someone be so kind as to post a link in the corresponding thread in the Dev section? Big thx here!

While Play Store doesn't work very well (same situation), since the base is changed to CM9 (you could observe that by showing the Recent Apps screen with a 3rd-party app, which is of AOSP style), the sound is great and sync works after I've swapped the GApps from CM9. HWA is also important for running certain games. So after all this ROM works better for me. My daily driver remains CM11 from tytung, nevertheless. As a second mobile, this phone is still quite a reliable device apart from being an open, reverse engineered piece of hardware.
