Premium Suite Upgrade for SIII - Galaxy S III General

Samsung has announced that its flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone will receive the company's Premium Suite upgrade pack.
Part 1
Part 2

Ugh... What can I say?

Yeah, I can't stand all these people, including samsung, referring to it as some sort of standalone premium suite upgrade when it is actually just the 4.1.2 update.

Premium is such a weird word to choose. I showed the vids to some non-tech S3 owners and they honestly thought it was a addon of a sort you had to buy
The low light camera mode is probably my favorite new addition..it was sorely needed.

Samsung should first fix the lag then add more features.

nice find! all add-ons seem very useful & amazing! :good:

One faces are detected

Anyone else notice Samsung screwed up in the video and showed the 5x5 grid from Note 2 in a few of the screens? Because as far as I know S3 is only ever gonna get 4x5.
And I hope this isn't the start of Samsung using idiotic Apple-esque names for all the features instead of just calling it what it is.

Why do you honestly care? If it helps the company make money to pay apples law suits then I really don't care.

So far i love all the sammy proprietary features in my GSIII and i like the way they support their flagship phone. And to be honest it's the first android phone i own, in which i have no desire to switch to an AOSP or AOKP rom... or even MIUI. It simply has everything i need.
The night mode in Camera is simply superb and well executed. It denoises photos efficiently and provide sharp and blur-less images. Also the new "Best Face" feature is brilliant, especially while taking family/friend photos.
The multiview, apart from making 2 apps in one screen possible, acts as a nifty little launcher too, so no real need for 3rd party apps like swipepad and the rest (especially with the various "all apps" mods). Although i wish it would be assigned to a button other than the "back" one.
The contexual tags in photos are ok i guess, but my main complaint here is that the weather/buddy tags are not EXIF compliant, meaning that the info will be stored in the gallery app instead of the images.
And the best of all is that my free memory stays more or less the same as with previous roms (currently on ARHDv17)
Now you might be *****ing about how Samsung advertises the new update or about the changes being for the better or the worse, but at the end of the day i would prefer Samsung over any other competent manufacturers which bring out phones and forget about them and their user base... (hint hint!).
if only they would release that damned Exynos documentation...

The video is cheesy and funny as hell, but its directed to the common user, not us who probably had most of this features ported from Note II before Samsung announced it would implement to SIII.
I know I had most of those on 4.1.1.
Hope this "Premium Upgrade" also comes to the SII

So when are we going to get it? I assume it will be a OTA update? I'm on O2 UK...

Yes, eventually it will be OTA updates too, but for now we have to use what samfirmware offers us.

Well, im interested to see what apple have included in the next upgrade! i would never have another iphone though.
I dont think it will be any more powerful than the s3, and from what i have seen it has about half an inch of extra screenage!!
I would be surprised if they unlocked the OS to compete with android and the customisation, but i doubt that will happen!
maybe apple will introduce bluetooth file sharing!!!!!! every other phone has it, why not on iphones? there is a cheap £50 phone at tesco's which texts calls and takes photos. i think its a cheap rubbish Alcatel phone. it has bluetooth.
ah well, ill just stick with what i know and like. Samsung!!!!!
Yes, I expect Iphone 5 to features - 2gb RAM, Quad Cores, 3300mAh battery, 4.65" retina screen and discount 50% for all apps for 2yrs. Is that too much to expect?

yeh im looking forward for iphone 5 but just for interesting. Had iphone 4s, phone maybe isnt so bad, but operating system is totally crap. Couldnt even send files over bluetooth...... android ftw
Here's what I know already:
1) It will still be highly dependant of iTunes.
2) Users will have to wait maybe months for a jailbreak.
3) The OS will basically still look the same as it did in 2007.
4) Still won't be able to backup the device on the memory card (ala cwm).
5) It will still have only one button - no dedicated back or menu keys.
6) You still won't be able to Bluetooth apps / movies / music to other phones.
7) Out of the box it won't just work until it's activated.
8) No removable battery of external memory card support.
9) I could seriously go on and on and on. But I've wasted enough time on crapple.
Please understand, I actually also own an iphone but once you've tasted android, ios is a major pain in the behind. Unless you are a simple person who find it difficult to do anything other than swype left to right.
Man I haven't tinkered with my iPhone since last year. I'm just bored of it and find it cumbersome to do anything on it. Believe me, it works great for messaging and taking / making calls.
I'm still on an older firmware because upgrading would mean hours and hours or restoring and re-downloading hacks, if they still work.
What pisses me off most is all the hype and media attention it gets. The S3 will still be a much better phone but still no media reports about it, on TV at least. Here in Australia all the major news networks have been talking about it's release for a week. Even today there was an ad for the morning news, which will feature the new iphone. Apple have bought out the media I think.

How is it going with the Exynos sources?

Anyone know if Samsung has said anything new or is there any other news to the Exynos sources?
I did follow the thread that got locked down witch was good.
I don't have Facebook and I don't know how to use Twitter so it's not that easy to get news about the Exynos that the other thread provided.
It's going as suspected, right down the crapper, that is. Origenboard is "under construction" according to insignal.
Sh*tty as usual.
If there is a breakthrough you'll see some threads pop up about it.
I think it is time that the FESM | Free Exynos Sources Movement
thread should be unlocked and make use of the fact that Samsung needs good publicity with the release of S4. Now the 4412 is getting way behind the current chipsets including the new ones from the Exynos family, what the hell can still hold Samsung from releasing them>

Yea, but i do see where he's coming from, that same money, or the potential loss it may come from bad publicity by them not releasing said sources may tilt the scales enough for them to find it worth it to release them. They'll be more exposed to bad publicity when they're releasing a new flagship device.
Not sure how farfetched this sounds, but who knows what makes a big corp like samsung tick on their insides... i think it's worth the shot.

To be honest there aren't many financial reasons not to release sources especially for hardware used with an open source system. If any thing it looses them money because people will buy more open devices.
We for example like open source if we wanted a closed source system we would get either an iPhone or windows phone, or at the very least not root.
I really can't see what Samsung would loose from not releasing sources, the people who don't care aren't keeping up with the news so they essentially don't matter, what does matter is the people moving to other devices over the sources.

They want make people to continuously buy new devices. Who would upgrade his aftermarket phone if it's able to run new software (and, may be provide better experience than current devices)? And this means loss of potential income for them.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
It is true that (not) releasing the sources would affect just a tiny percent of their sales but it is often the case that those people are asked for advice when someone is buying a new phone. After the worst possible experience with LG I have personally revert 10+ people even considering LG as possibility and recommended sony as alternative.
Also there is a case (as myself) that are not informed about the problems with CM before buying the phone as it never came to my mind that the most developed family of phone will have problems with cyanogen.
It would be great if we can work together with the S2 community because when the phone gets into the third year of existence it is more dependent on CM than official moded roms.

Most of the people who want to run CM so they dont buy new device are familiar with this problem are more likely not to update to Samsung anyway.
so what's so hard about using Twitter?
Well at least we should organise not just some useless spam now and then.
You seriously think it would matter if you organize or spam now and then? They couldn't care less either way.

Yes, because it relies on CM10.1.
And I don't agree with you guys: even if Samsung don't release the sources, it's too easy to leave them alone (they don't comply with their license obligations, plus their promise, and on top of that, nobody bothers them), at least we should let them know we don't like to be f***** and it was the last device we buy from them.

GS4 - Google Edition or AT&T for cheap?

I'm having a really hard time deciding between the at&t version of the S4, and the soon to be released "Google Edition" of the S4.
I have the ATT version now, and running TouchWiz, it's one of the laggiest phones I've ever used! Non stop lag throughout the UI, and particularly in the SMS app of all places...the keyboard freezes completely and the S4 just runs like absolute dogs**t.
I've disabled everything that can be and that helps quite a bit, but I still have lag.
I definitely want the stock android experience and understand I'd lose some features from the touchwiz/carrier version, which I am fine with.
Where' I have a hard time deciding is on cost. The carrier version is $250 for 32gb for me, vs the $650 google edition.
What do people here think? Will the carrier verision be able to run STOCK android every bit as well as the one google releases? I want as flawless a phone as possible. My nexus 4 is amazing, except for the terrible battery life and lack of LTE, so I want an S4 that will run android as well as the nexus.
Will the carrier S4 handle the google edition rom once that's (hopefully) released? Any stability or performance issues I should be aware of?

No one can be certain given ATT's behavior with the s4, but IMO it is safe to get the ATT version. My phone already feels like the google edition thanks to task650's AOKP, things will only get better for us when the GE is released
I would say the AT&T is still a worthy device. I too was in your laggy shoes. As much as I want to flash a custom ROM I am going to wait a bit before I do. Mainly, I want to see if the GE will support the added features such as the ir blaster. If they do I'm waiting for Roms to include those from the GE.
I know you have disabled a bunch of stuff already but I disabled practically everything Samsung on the phone and found replacements and kept what I wanted. I'm sure you have too.
In a short end of things while I'm still stock I am more of Nova/Google device with a back end of touchwiz. Adjusted some settings in Nova and the device settings. Its been a few weeks so I will have to look back and see exactly what I set but my laggy phone is now quite snappy.
I'd say stick it out because I personally feel confident the GE will flash fairly well on our devices. If I'm wrong then I guess I'll be waiting a little longer for a ROM I like or just a Galaxy S5 or S6.

Thank you very much for the reply. I'll give that ROM a try now...
I've used CM10 on here, but even that was a little laggy. My main reason for switching back to touchwiz though, was so that I could use my 64gb exFat SD card.
I was in the same boat. Love the s4 hate the lag but didn't want to pay the premium for the Google s4. I found the best for me is flashing GoldenEye ROM which is just the international ROM on our att model. It takes out the lag and keeps the phone like stock. Love it.
Is recommend trying it.... It'd be just like you have it now with all the features but no are bloat / lag

Other than the Smart Stay and camera, TouchWiz doesn't really do anything for me.
If those are critical to you then I'd go with the AT&T phone since it's less expensive.
For me, had I known about the Google Edition coming out, I would have waited for it and bought the AT&T but then flipped it on eBay before opening the package. To ensure I got the most $ for it. Then I'd have put a few bucks of my own into the deal and bought a Google Edition.

I definitely agree with you there. I was leaning that direction for a long time, but I think I've decided to keep the ATT version.
I got the 32gb for $250. I'll keep this (actually running great now with the goldeneye rom) and worst case scenario I'll buy a nexus 5 for $350 (speculation of course, but I think likely to happen) when it comes out, then sell my GS4 and possibly even make a slight profit.
Thanks to all for the advice!

On the plus side to stick with AT&T model you get Touchwhiz support which to me is not a bad thing considering they could easily fix Touchwhiz, if they would just listen to us lol As it stands we don't know how TW will work with the Google Edition. It would make sense that it should run flawlessly on it but there's always that chance Google will play with something to keep you on there side.
I was super excited to see the google edition of the S4 during google io, after having time to ponder it, I too am wondering if it will be the best purchase. It would seem that a lot of the addidtional hardware such as the IR Blaster will not function, so Im starting to have my doubts. Pretty sure it won't work. As of right now, there is no Android API to access the IR blaster. Rumored to change for 4.3.
Google edition actually does support the ir blaster on the s4. You just need an app to support it. Read reviews today and all indicate it works but doesn't come with WatchOn or any stock apps to use it.

Well guys I used to have Gnex...there we had nightlies, mods, ports, milestones, kernels and latest google updates...life was so fun..I became flashaholic...and then I bought gt-i9500...thought it will have a great developer supoort and if not nightlies I'll have good number of interesting roms to flash.but I was realky realky disappointed when I see 6 roms only . I'm not saying that these rons are not good..no way...all of them are great and stable...but when I see s3 forum and htc one forum or even gt-i9505 forum I realky regret buying this phone.who else does??

It's all because of Samsung...I mean come on guys...u create a chipset and you're not sure about its effectiveness or whateva the reason is that you declare 9505 the "international" version??it has never happened in the past.samsung is surely losing grounds or at least surely is nervous by htc one and the xperia coming one after another that you create exynos then u say no we'll put snapdragon thing in the other model and then again u say no let's have a snapdragon 800..and then u put a bulky camera in it and call it zoom and then u put tight screws in it and call it the Active...one is so much cinfused in all this GALAXY that I start thinking s4 is a GALAXY within already congested galaxy.

well, just to throw another opinion out there...i chose the s4 because i was looking forward to a phone that will just work straight out of the box, stock rom, without having to try custom firmware and roms just to get any sort of use out of the thing. other android phones i've used have awful battery life and all sorts of system instabilities and bugs. it's nice to finally have a phone that just works, does what it's supposed to do and i don't have to worry about switching off all the smart features because of battery life. only thing i'm waiting for now is the a2sd update so i can free a little more mem for apps. but with 64gb sd card, i have loads of room for music and videos. definitely the best stock rom/device i've had so far.
That is quite well said bro..this device is a beast in itself..but everybody has different expectations and differebt priorities. At least samsung should have overhauled the UI..

im dissappointed because s4 has no hdr video, there is weird lag in shutter sound, and i dont understand why they couldn put a 3100mAh battery, there is a plenty of space in such big phone :/
Not really disappoi but the predictive text acts like it's drunk all the time

Disappointed by stuttering in some games, which really should be flying. (granny smith, rr3...)
This might be shallow for some but I'm disappointed cause you can't have lockscreen widgets on stock firmware

Well first of all, GNex was Nexus. It makes it a lot easier if devs are working on Nexus. Also GNex was a lot cheaper and this led to more users. Generally if there are more users, the development blooms. You can't really compare your i9500 or even i9505 against the development of any Nexus phone.
S3 has been out for a lot longer than S4 and now you are really comparing these two's development?
HTC One and i9505 have more developments going on because simply they have more users and also AOSP devs have more experiences with Snapdragon from phones like Nexus 4.
I don't know how you bought i9500 but I'm going to assume that you bought it off-contract for like $700. Very small amount of people would actually go this route instead of just paying $200 with contract.
I should buy s3... Is the same..

Nexus always had source and the last couple of nexii may very very have sold more than the i9500. A lot less people own them compared to i9505 and many Devs have shied away from phones with no source.

I have a Gnexus and a N4 at home at the moment. I gave them to gf and kids.
Am I disappointed of my 9500? Not at all, everything is better than my old N4 from screen to battery life.
Yea i have less rom to flash, but I don't care, I have one without bloatware that's running great, fast.
Here they're selling the 9505, so I imported my GT-I9500, paid 150$ more than what 9505 would've cost me. And I would redo it tomorrow without hesitation if I needed to.

With all of Samsung`s latest android tablet`s having stereo front facing speakers, i think they dropped the ball, Letting HTC get the first stereo phone, i would have bought the S4 instead of the One if they had.
John.
I just switched from the 9500 to the htc one a few days ago.
I had a note 1. I enjoyed it for a few years. I wanted an updated experience that felt fresh and snappy and provided something slightly different. The s4 just did not do this for me.
Is it a good phone? absolutely.
But for me it didnt do anything i was left wanting.
The htc one has provided me with what i was looking for. Absolutely blazing UI theres no stutter or lag in any form or in any function. An enhanced sound experience vis a vis the boomsound speakers.
Zoe. - its fun
Premium finish - seriously its just so superbly crafted.
I think what most S4 I9500 user longing for was an absolute support from Samsung. An update that would really fix issues. Devs could only do as much. Fws came flying out from Samsung lab that does nothing.

why do you need more custom roms, kernels, mods to consider it a good device?
the i9500 has fewer roms, kernels but those developments are unique that you cant find it in the i9505 dev's threads. especially the Persues Kernel from Andrei, the screen/sound mods are the true original works that others dont have. and i have seen users from 9505 going to Persues's/Wanam's Thread asking to port their mods to i9505 just because they dont have those unique features even they have more roms/kernels.
i upgraded from n2 to s4 because i know Andrei, Wanam, Indie are there. and their qualities are more than enough to convince me. i am lucky that i dont have to import i9500, my country is selling it
My s4 is a monster !!!

Why not the Nexus Gen 2?

So if one has no use for the S pen, is there a reason why one would get the 2014 over the Nexus Gen 2? The specs seem roughly similar.
My priorities are these:
1 - Screen res
2 - Swype keyboard
3 - Long battery life
I'm dumping my ipad mostly because of the lack of no. 2. Once you go swype, you never can go back!
For me, the lack of external storage (sd card) is the deal breaker. After the OS and bloatware, you will have enough space for maybe 2 1080p movies at best. I want more space and I don't want to tether a storage dongle to get it.

Nexus have good spec but I'm prefer stylus and expandable storage to use for video and book.. Internal memory will full with HD game data file. So not good enough unless Nexus have 64GB memory...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4
Personally, I would never buy a full sized tablet without expandable storage since "the cloud" isn't a viable option for me.
Samsung has actually done a lot of customization that adds quite a bit, such as being able to run two apps side by side. You won't be getting the latest and greatest updates in a timely manner, but with the recent updates being pretty minor, you won't be missing out on that much if you don't go Nexus. Plus, Samsung devices have always been notoriously easy to root and add custom ROMS, so you'll get a Nexus like experience if you'd like. However, the Nexus tablet may likely be about $200 less (just a guess, no info to go by).

For me it's simple, the spen the other stuff is trivial and easy to get around. If The nexus did indeed come with an spen for me it would be a no brainer. The one thing that pisses me of about non nexus devices is the updates, the other is no multi user support from Samsung. I don't know why they haven't implemented this in their tablet lineup.

Expendable storage would be a deal killer too since I plan on getting only the 16gb version but I'm under the impression it will be coming with it (all rumors point to that).
Multi-tasking window is nice but how often are you guys actually using it? I guess it can come in handy while watching a video and you want to read something. The issue w/ my Galaxy S3 is that multi-window brings the thing to it's knees.
for me, it's the pen that's pulling me in. Some android fanboys may disagree with me but if it wasn't for the S-pen i'd be going with the next iPad. The tablet apps ecosystem is much more mature, especially when it comes to good note taking apps. I need it for school. I pre ordered the note though so i'm pretty excited for it.

Multitasking on even my Note 2 is not really a deal breaker for me but when I had my Note 10.1 original it was nice, the ability to run multiple Windows at ones is really handy. Even with the high ppi on phones its hard to read a lot of the text on screen if im watching a video or doing something else, but on a tablet its a whole other story

So am i, it'll be nice not having to deal with the jailbreaking cat and mouse game w/ apple. I'll probably just install a nice touchwiz rom and some root only apps for this device, who knows though. The thing is already feature packed, only a few things i'd want to add like opening multiwindow to any app.

Way back when there were a lot of Benefits to root, seems less so these days. The main reason why I root is to remove the bloat and for changing my dsn so I can watch American Netflix. I am curious to see if NOX might might be a problem for getting root access on this device, I am really bummed about no multiuser on Samsungs roms

Actually, the Note 10.1 2014 does come with multi-user, max. 8 users
Also apparently being implemented in their other 4.2.2 tablets somewhere down the line
And Knox will be a problem if you care about your warranty (and this goes beyond just rooting the device- unlike old days, you can't claim warranty again by unrooting after you root because of Knox)

Does it automatically void your warranty in every case though? I'm only worried about having my warranty for hardware issues like dead pixels or messed up buttons. On all previous phones i've owned, all that stuff would still be covered for rooters. I've always dealt with sprint though, not samsung.

Possibly.
This thread explains how Knox works pretty well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447832
Though whether that applies to Sprint warranties as well I have no idea.
This is for the S4 as well- the Note 3 will (obviously) have no non-Knox firmware, which may mean that Knox MIGHT act a bit different, seeing as its not likely there'll be any firmware with non-secure bootloaders. However with the S4 people have reported that the flags have changed just by rooting the device. So who knows what might happen.

I know its not the same device, but if you want to see how it'll be implemented in the Note 10.1 2014:
http://www.sammobile.com/2013/09/16...y-tab-3-8-0-and-10-1-through-software-update/
It'll look/work the same way (except with the restricted profiles of course), I just haven't been able to find the video I saw showing it in action.

I have the current Nexus 10. We will have to see what the Nexus 10 Gen 2 offers when it released soon. I can point out two features on the Nexus 10 that are exceptional. First, the forward facing speakers on each side of the screen. These are much better than the side facing (or rear speakers) on other units. I thought that Samsung's side facing speakers on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 were awful. Second, the timely software releases are something you will appreciate the longer you own the tablet.
I am someone that finds the s-pen extremely useful. External storage is something that I want also. I will wait for the Nexus 10 Gen 2 announcement, but I suspect we will be faced with giving up something no matter which way we go with these two tablets.
Biggest turn off is quality will be poop if rumor is true that the new Nexus 10 is being built by Asus. This is coming from owner of Nexus 7 2012 and 2013 models.

I agree about the S Pen part. I am really looking forward to the hi rez digitizer on the 2014.
I do like tue more mature apps for the iPad, but I cannot deal with a 4:3 screen any more. I read somewhere that switching to a 16:9 screen will be a major headache for devs, but I do not know if that is accurate.
Sent from my Galaxy S4 via tapatalk.
The biggest hold-back for me (from the Nexus) is the lack of memory. Removable memory is the best option, but I could live with fixed memory if they offer 128GB like the iPad now does. With how crappy internet is (if I can get it) while deployed or on exercises/travelling, I definitely can't rely on "the cloud"...
