Worth Rooting Nexus 7? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i just got my Nexus 7 and i was wondering if it is worth rooting it. Is there a good amount of development and mods and kerms and nice ROMS? Thanks a lot...
Since people might say its a stupid question and i should root my main point is about the ROMs... Can youll suggest me the best ROMs for N7?

Ok.. Thanks a lot... Can you guide me out through the whole process? Kind of doing it now.. I have the toolkit for N7... But it says 2.0 and there is an update to 3.0 for donation verison.. Is 2.0 fine or should i get 3.0? And secondly where does this backup get stored?

Version 2.0 is fine. I am still using it. Once you installed the toolkit on your pc, you should be good to go as the software is self explanatory, and it also explains everything right there and then. Jsut do numbers 1 to 7 ( I skip no. 2 though)
Only thing to note is you need to enable USB debugging on your Nexus 7, and sometimes you need to enable PTP instead of MTP. You can easily switch/change the setting after you connected your Nexus to the pc by opening the app drawer and clicking the necessary box.
Good luck

Not seen the need to root mine yet, all of our droid phones are rooted & running custom tons, so I do know the benefits of rooting, CWM, custom roms etc.

Yes root it
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus

Do not... I repeat do not use a toolkit. Those are only helpful IF AND WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
Do it the manual way, the same way it is for all nexi.
Also there is no best ROM... that's for you to decide yourself no one can tell you ehat you'll think the best ROM will be.

I Totally agree......
My main issue with Android phones is battery life and I feel rooting is a must for phones but my battery life with the Nexus 7 has been very good..

I doubt there's a circumstance under which I'd say no. Even if you never use a custom rom/kernel (which, yes, there are some good ones out there) there's still adblock, titanium backup, betterbatterystats, etc.
I used glazed rom + motley kernel. paranoid android is also another common recommendation, due to being able to change the sizes of each app.

I say go for it, you got nothing to lose. You can get it back to an out-of-the-box state very easily with http://forums.androidcentral.com/ne...ide-factory-image-restore-your-nexus-7-a.html

At least rooting by its self doesnt. Getting a custom ROM and Kernel and tuning the too does help improve battery life.

I want to root my Nexus 7, but then I cant use my Google wallet right?
And rooting voids warranty right?

Well hello there Nexus One

Hello all I got my first Nexus One yesterday I know I should root it but I've never dropped the cash I did for a device I know there is a chance of a brick. I need to let the newness wear off.
But the purpose of this post is any suggestions on specific apps for the Nexus I can try out in the market. There are some that Ive read in this forum some but maybe some were left out.
Thanks in advance.
Just sayin, but the only real chance of a brick is to let your battery die or pull it while flashing the radio. (to my understanding)
try the XDADevelopers app, it's pretty nifty.
done and done has anyone ported swype to nexus yet

Thank you for these
Just make sure your battery is charged, you probably won't brick this phone unless your trying to.
While there's not much of a chance for bricking, it supposedly does void your warranty. Some people have been able to get work done even after unlocking though.
With that said, I thought the same thing and thought I would wait about a month before I unlocked it, but that lasted about 2 days lol.
I unlocked it and flashed Cyan's ROM and haven't looked back since.

If you didn't engrave it, don't root it yet. Use it for a week or two, make sure there's no reason to return/replace it due to some defect. If there is no reason, then root it =)
My only 2 reasons for rooting it are: WiFi tethering and Flashlight. Imo, there are no other real reasons to do it, stock rom is extremely well done and I didn't notice much difference between it and Cyan.
Just root it..you'll truly own your phone then. Unless you don't know how to read and follow instructions properly or are just plain incompetent..which I doubt you are since you found this forum~ the chances of bricking are low.
Root it and never look back.
Nah, give it a few days to let any hardware issues make themselves known, then root it if your of a mind.
If you don't root it, all you are going to be able to think about is rooting it. I say use it for a few days to make sure all the hardware is good and go for it. I think I lasted about 36 hours before giving in and I told myself that I wasn't going to do it!

My reasoning for wanting to root it, is so I can put the Desire rom on the device. I really enjoy the HTC Sense and android. The stock android on the Nexus One is fantastic I agree just IMO missing the Sense UI.

Att S3 - load new rom how/where to start??

So i have the att version of this phone, and I found the Diet ICS rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1732195
and found the Root with no flash counter: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
But don't know wehre to start?? Which roms are the best?? Diet? What other roms are available that are "good"? I've checked the roms that I've found, however I dont really understand the differences between all these roms. Nor do I understnad what steps I need to take and what exactly I need to do? I've read the "everything att s3..." thread, but it doesn't make sense to me on what I need to do to load a new rom.
Do I need to follow the root without flash counter thread?? Do I just follow a new rom thread?
What kernel/rom would be best to load for better battery life?
thanks!
Have you read the step by step guide for rooting? If not then start there.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I did check it...but in the guide I don't see where it says to load your custom rom at. I'm reading the rom guide that doesnt add the flash counter.
Also, which rom/kernel is better for more battery life? Or should I wait for CM9?
you don't need to be doing anything to your phone at this point. READ, READ, READ, before you eff up your phone!

Absolutely true. The place to start is always with reading, not with posting more random clutter to the forums. All of the information is out there, and forums come equipped with a search.
+1 Go slow, read once you have root you can do a lot of things without the need to flash a custom rom right away. You gain ability to block ads with Adfree from the market. Also you can use titanium backup to backup your phone. Remember back Up! back up! back up! IT will save your butt.
Ballgum
All the above is Gospel! You need to read and then read some more. Rooting gives you freedom and the ability to choice a rom if u want. Roms are a choice u make. Everyone has different likes and dislikes so no one can say use this rom over that rom. YOUR choice. As far a things like battery life again each rom can give each person a different experience based on usage apps etc. Everyone above has given u good advice read read read. I have seen to many peeps who rush into things and find they have an expensive paper weight. After u have read more try rooting and then a rom or two.

well, i'm not a complete newb. I had a Note that I completely tore down and reloaded numerous times with different roms, odin, etc etc...
I guess my question shouldve been is there any specific rom or kernel that is battery optimized? And also any idea when CM9 comes out? I could just optimize battery and wait for CM9 if its coming out soon.
I'm not going to just go hurry and load a rom. But once I know WHICH rom/kernel I need to load then I can go from there on how best to do that
Idk, when i read about each individual rom its not clear to me what the differences are between the different roms if that makes sense? Like they all kinda say the same thing "de-bloated, optimized, etc etc". I just want a bug free, clean rom that works well for battery really and i dont see that criteria listed on the rom descriptions
I realize theres an amount I need to learn to to get this thing loaded, my question more is whats a "popular" "less buggy" rom that works well with battery life and is CM9 supposed to be the bees knees or what?? haha
actually looks like not many roms available yet. i may wait until there's more to choose from and for now just battery optimize and remove att crap
There are no good roms for this phone so I would root and wait hopefully they start coming out soon but it maybe a few months or longer or never since the international version is getting all the developer love only. I want MIUI or CM9/10 then we can talk.

should I root

Every single android device I had has been rooted the very first day.
With the nexus 7 I can't see the point to be frank. It is doing everything I want minus the ad blocking.
Any advantages of rooting? Please let me know. I feel like an apple fan boy
Is this even a question?
What kind of disadvantages is there to rooting unless your messing with things you shouldnt be.
An advantage could be that you could backup and restore all your apps and data, if you ever needed to.

Im like you, i ve had 11 different android devices over the years and each one was rooted within a few days, but for some reason It took me about 4 months to finally root mine, I know what you mean its damn near perfect out of the box. But the 4.2 update changed my mind and I was forced to root. And I'm glad I did, I've flashed 5 or 6 custom ROMs now for this and have settled on slimbean for a while, I can't see changing it until I get the urge to flash as this is perfect - and I can use all my rooted apps now, along with being able to make nandroids.
Just root, and try to find an awesome ROM to stick with for a bit... you won't loose your social life for more than an evening or so and you'll be much happier in the long run!

New TMo Nexus 4 Owner - Worth it to Root/Mod it?

I'm coming from the LG G2X, and it was a nightmare. I'm very glad to be into a phone that is actually working, and working well, It's a beautiful phone as well.
So with the G2X I rooted it fairly early on to try out the various mods, since LG and TMO elected not to support the phone at all. I kinda HAD to mod it to make it work in some respects.
So, with the Nexus 4, it seems to be awfully good just as it is. So what's the reason TO root or mod this phone? Just to have the experience of CM or another mod?
You should unlock the boot loader now at least because it will wipe everything. That way if you want to mod in the future you won't lose data.
I'd say run the phone stock until you run into something you want to change that requires root. This phone doesn't need anything out of the box but there is a ton available.

+1. I waited a few days to unlock my bootloader/root and lost all the apps that I installed. I mean they were backed up to google so i just had to install them twice lol. But stock is more than efficient right now.
When I initially got the phone, I did not want to flash any custom roms, but I did want to root and unlock it in case I wanted to flash a custom rom down the road. I didn't see anything that peaked my interest when I had my Nexus 7 for a while and that is still pretty much stock. Come the N4 and PIE and I had to go and try it. Now I am hook all over again lol.
It's fun! And more stable than the MIUI days of the Nexus one and Sensation. :good:

Worth Rooting Nexus 6p

Hey Everyone,
Simple question, is it worth rooting?
I have had many phones and the majority I've enjoyed rooting but with the Nexus 6p I'm kinda not too sure.
I want to know everyone's opinion on this.
like is having a custom kernel and rom worth losing Android Pay?
does having a custom kernel help with Battery life with Doze helping as well?
I'm tempted to root it and everything but would love to hear some feedback on this
Thanks!
Wasn't worth it to me until Cataclysm came to the 6P. Rooted and installed it that same day. Love the features and they make the phone more usable for me.
Well a lot of XDA'rs with Nexus's are Happy Flasher's thanks to root!
But its your usage and choices....

If you root you do not lose Pay. You can always "temp Unroot" and only have root active when you need it.
If you install Xposed, you can have root AND have pay.

Honestly, only you can really answer these questions. It depends on what kind of applications you'd use root for. You haven't actually mentioned any situations where root is required, a custom kernel doesn't require root, it does require an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery though.

Use the systemless root and you can still use android pay, if you use xposed it'll break android pay.

Do you not have the phone? 6p came with a short USB A to C cable that works fine for connecting to computer.
Been debating on rooting and enjoying new ROM goodness, but I'm one of the users that uses Android Pay frequently. Nice to know I can temp unroot in order to make a payment. I'm one that likes to modify DPI and such and as far as I'm aware doesn't matter if you're stock or not, changing anything in the system throws a flag.
Checked it today by changing the DPI through ADB and tried to open Android Pay. Wouldn't work.

what module would I have to install to have Android Pay work?
I wouldn't bother or at least wait until you get bored of your phone as you don't want to risk breaking your brand new phone if you don't know too much
There's a few minor reasons to ROOT now......Things like:
Different battery icons
Double tap to wake
Ability to change fonts
More control over your notification light
Audio mods (like Viper4Andorid)
Backup data and apps
Change clock position
(I've probably missed a few)
Those seem pretty minor, but are the main reasons I ROOT.
I was planning on not rooting the nexus 6p. Actually, i really wanted to just use it as is and largely leave the tweaking alone. However, two things led me to root:
1) CF Lumen works so much better with root.
2) One handed mode has become a necessity for me. It's a shame Google has not built this into the core OS.
