Worth Rooting Nexus 6p - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Everyone,
Simple question, is it worth rooting?
I have had many phones and the majority I've enjoyed rooting but with the Nexus 6p I'm kinda not too sure.
I want to know everyone's opinion on this.
like is having a custom kernel and rom worth losing Android Pay?
does having a custom kernel help with Battery life with Doze helping as well?
I'm tempted to root it and everything but would love to hear some feedback on this
Thanks!

Wasn't worth it to me until Cataclysm came to the 6P. Rooted and installed it that same day. Love the features and they make the phone more usable for me.

Well a lot of XDA'rs with Nexus's are Happy Flasher's thanks to root!
But its your usage and choices....

Noooo don't lose android pay!

If you root you do not lose Pay. You can always "temp Unroot" and only have root active when you need it.
If you install Xposed, you can have root AND have pay.

Honestly, only you can really answer these questions. It depends on what kind of applications you'd use root for. You haven't actually mentioned any situations where root is required, a custom kernel doesn't require root, it does require an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery though.

I can confirm this. I temp unrooted my Nexus 6P and used it to pay for some things at Rite Aid.

Thanks for that I thought you had to root to do the custom recovery and kernel.

Use the systemless root and you can still use android pay, if you use xposed it'll break android pay.

Do you not have the phone? 6p came with a short USB A to C cable that works fine for connecting to computer.

Been debating on rooting and enjoying new ROM goodness, but I'm one of the users that uses Android Pay frequently. Nice to know I can temp unroot in order to make a payment. I'm one that likes to modify DPI and such and as far as I'm aware doesn't matter if you're stock or not, changing anything in the system throws a flag.
Checked it today by changing the DPI through ADB and tried to open Android Pay. Wouldn't work.

Yeah I get it, my bank doesn't support Android Pay just yet so I have no use of it and the only play I've used it before was at McDonald's..
it's been a hard decision because I had an iPhone for a while so Im not up to date with what kernels are good and what roms are good.
One kernel I remember which I can't find here is Franco Kernel (I think that's how you spell it)

what module would I have to install to have Android Pay work?

I wouldn't bother or at least wait until you get bored of your phone as you don't want to risk breaking your brand new phone if you don't know too much

There's a few minor reasons to ROOT now......Things like:
Different battery icons
Double tap to wake
Ability to change fonts
More control over your notification light
Audio mods (like Viper4Andorid)
Backup data and apps
Change clock position
(I've probably missed a few)
Those seem pretty minor, but are the main reasons I ROOT.

I was planning on not rooting the nexus 6p. Actually, i really wanted to just use it as is and largely leave the tweaking alone. However, two things led me to root:
1) CF Lumen works so much better with root.
2) One handed mode has become a necessity for me. It's a shame Google has not built this into the core OS.

Version 2.0 is fine. I am still using it. Once you installed the toolkit on your pc, you should be good to go as the software is self explanatory, and it also explains everything right there and then. Jsut do numbers 1 to 7 ( I skip no. 2 though)
Only thing to note is you need to enable USB debugging on your Nexus 7, and sometimes you need to enable PTP instead of MTP. You can easily switch/change the setting after you connected your Nexus to the pc by opening the app drawer and clicking the necessary box.
Good luck
Not seen the need to root mine yet, all of our droid phones are rooted & running custom tons, so I do know the benefits of rooting, CWM, custom roms etc.

Do not... I repeat do not use a toolkit. Those are only helpful IF AND WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
Do it the manual way, the same way it is for all nexi.
Also there is no best ROM... that's for you to decide yourself no one can tell you ehat you'll think the best ROM will be.

I doubt there's a circumstance under which I'd say no. Even if you never use a custom rom/kernel (which, yes, there are some good ones out there) there's still adblock, titanium backup, betterbatterystats, etc.
I used glazed rom + motley kernel. paranoid android is also another common recommendation, due to being able to change the sizes of each app.

At least rooting by its self doesnt. Getting a custom ROM and Kernel and tuning the too does help improve battery life.

Poll! Will VZW Note 4 Retail Ever See ROOT

So this is just a simple Poll Thread. Just wondering if we think the VZW Note 4 will ever see some kind of unlock!
Now a midst allot of the talk going around some say we may HAVE TO have an unlocked bootloader to even consider root.
So this Poll is going to be asking the following question? It is not more so about will we get Unlocked, or will we get root.
The question is:
Do you think we will see any type of unlocking/rooting method for the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Retail?

Go ahead and put your vote in the top of the OP sir! Id like to see what everyone has to think about this topic!
Granted im very inclined to agree with you on your answer. I dont think its necessary. More or less a habit just to do it and were spoiled with the features! But yes some of the perks would definitely be nice!
I say no. I think every Samsung phone from here on out will be locked down tight on Att and Verizon. Sprint will have root and that will be the only route for rooting in the near future.
I HIGHLY disagree... this device will definitely see root. And although it performs great without it, things like write protection completely diminish the joy of having a capable device. We'll see root, maybe not an unlocked bootloader... but there's always safestrap....Samsung's devs are great, buy ours are better... hence the hiring of Steve.
For 1 just because it is hard to root makes it more tempting for someone to cracking the code and for 2 touchwiz sux it lags freezes and remove all that crap that Verizon and samsung put on our phones.
I mean... the Note 3 was the same.. it had a Root. I'm sure something will pop up
prob have root but no unlock bootloader
Looking back at old devices and seeing where we are now. I think the chances of obtaining a root exploit for this device are like 1 in a million. So I'm going with no on both. But that doesn't take away any value of the phone itself, its still the biggest beast around currently. Its also priced the most among online marketplaces next to the iPhone 6.
Highly unlikely. If it does, it will be some new universal root that happens to work on the Verizon version, but nothing Verizon specific.
Maybe if everyone keeps saying no, someone will look at this thread and be like, "can't? I can't? Lemme show these dudes why I am who I am." Lol
This is the only phone I have ever owned where my keeping it Is not based on root.
Of course I want root, and yes I believe it will happen eventually.
I really hope it will happen. I really have been grinding my teeth using the note 4 without root. I need my per app dpi settings, adaway, and more xposed modules. Honestly I would probably return it if I still could.

Ditto... love it so far!
Hard to say, but I'm thinking no.
"No" right now and once L is released, helL no. Sorry, but that is what it seems to me.
Results as of right now
Well it seems like the dial is leaning more towards the side of most people thinking we will or most certainly get root.
vs.
Those who think more than likely not or most certainly not.
Ive got high hopes but like i stated im mighty happy with how the device is performing at this point in time. Of course the added benifit of removing junk would be great if anything that and xposed!
Im keeping my Root Alert set to high! LOL
Thanks for voting it up fellas! :good:
i say 100% on KK and on L 75%
i have read a thread just like this on soooo many devices since the OG Droid and the only thing that has been successful since has been locking the bootloader. N4 just needs the right people with it in their hands and that will eventually happen.
L has already gained root access without a modified kernel which you can read about here.
personally i am not moving from the N3 until there is root and at minimum SafeStrap working. i have most of the N4 software features mixed with some L and some S5 stuff with a great theme and some amazing Xposed apps on my N3 that i am not willing to give up. customization from theme to software tweaks is something i highly value.
No root mark my words
What about the KNOX flag? Does it not really matter? I pay 10$ a month for insurace so does the warranty matter that much?

Warning about root

if you root this phone and trip knox fuse counter. you will NEVER EVER be able to use the great feature of MST through samsung pay.
My thoughts . since we have a non root hotspot and all bloatware (which isnt that much) can be disabled
the phone has so much customization incl uded i am not rooting the phone. the battery lasts 2 days easy with medium
use. no bugs at all i can find. what more can you ask for.
Remember Root no MST (mst is the ability to use the old card swipers at any location with the phone. it sends card you addeds magnetic strip info to the swiper )
UNLESS you can root without tripping the know counter. its unreversalble
carry on
First phone I've owned that I dont see myself rooting. I really like the Samsung Pay.
Yea I'm coming from the S6 and couldn't use it but enjoying Samsung Pay now
You don't have to worry about that. All US versions are locked down. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3327399
After 8 generations of HTC phones, I decided to try Samsung this year as M10 rumors were they were ditching Boomsound my favorite feature of the M phones. I felt edge was far superior this year at least based on the rumors which getting this close to launch are usually spot on. I was well aware that I was going to have to decide to trip knox or not if I wanted root. While there is more customization and control with Android 6 it still doesn't compare to having everything wide open, especially if you are use to S-OFF.
Is the trade off worth it? Well I think so at least right now, this device is superior to pretty much anything out at the moment. I'm already missing Xposed, Titanium Backup & AdAway. The lock down on these devices is just getting so bad, while I understand they shouldn't come rooted out of the box but give us a choice. We may not even have the option of tripping Knox at this point. Part of the reason I stayed with Sprint for so long is they were more friendly with unlocking phones then big red but everything seems to be going the wrong direction.
Even if root is granted, it will just be patched and it's only going to get more secure and difficult each generation. I guess we just might have to start accepting that this is just how it is. Kinda sad, I'm just so use to having it even back in the Windows Mobile days I was running custom roms.

as stated above there a option to
unlock the bootloader in Dev options. im not sure all the details because i see no benefit to root right now but
they do have the phone rooted and they are modding kernels and system as wee speak. also custom recovery.
TWRP will inject root upon install and start up to reboot.
This is just a warning about root to anyone so they know the Deal with Samsung pay and MST
I do see it says 900f but theres numerous reports of it working on the 900P

Samsung pay is the only way to use MST or use ur phone for old card swipers. But thats your call
Samsung pay is useless to me. And as far as I can tell that's the only benefit to not rooting. I've read there are other benefits but that's the only one I've seen posted, Other than warranty.
To me; rooting is more beneficial. Removing advertising is the biggest. Then a basic debloated rom is second. Adding apps that are not usable on non-rooted phone would be my third reason.

I'm kinda feeling the same way. Can't use Samsung Pay as a total replacement anyway and I just looked they don't even support Capital One cards at least yet anyway. That was one thing google did right back in the day with wallet, you could link any card. Still looks cool but ad block is one of the main reasons I root as well. I'm giving AdGaurd a shot (I use that on my desktop) and you can side load it to Android it creates a local VPN connection to the app to filter all traffic. Kinda annoying you always have a notification saying it's running also doesn't block youtube ads which Xposed worked awesome for that. I miss TI as well. Warranty void I feel so so about. S-OFF you could at least remove a tampered flag on an HTC although HTC would still have record of you doing a dev unlock token even if reset everything.

Rooting for a purpose, then unrooting

So, I've been at this Android thing for a very long time, and had unofficially retired from the XDA world when I bought a GS7 because I never thought rooting would even be possible. Well, now that I've rooted the phone and experimented with a custom ROM, I've come up with a question I don't know that I've ever had or read before.
I'm struggling with whether or not to stay in the rooted universe because I had come to take advantage of Samsung Pay quite often, and I didn't realize the battery difference would be what it is.
I want my phone rooted for two primary reasons, 1) to hack the provisioning so that I can use the native hotspot feature without needing a special app like FoxFi, and 2) to be able to remove all the crapware these phones come with.
So.. Theoretically here..... Shouldn't it be possible to root my phone, remove the crap, hack the provisioning, and then unroot the phone, revert back to the stock kernel, get my battery life back, and use Samsung Pay again? I never did load Samsung Pay on this phone since I've rooted it.
I saw psouza's unrooting guide but if I recall it was a destructive process..... I'd like to see if there's a way to root, set things up, then unroot and restore the phone to a state that maintains the hotspot hack and makes Samsung Pay happy.

well poo....I wonder....since the S7 is still relatively new to hacking....I wonder if someone can figure out a workaround that would allow for tampering first, and a successful unrooting afterward. Or maybe this is a Android-wide problem...I've never really thought about this particular approach before....I've always just been always rooted, or never rooted.
I also have this hope that someone will figure out how to spoof whatever is necessary in order for Samsung Pay to still work.
I am using stang5.0liter's ROM and the only slight issue is the battery.......phone runs smoothly for me.....if Samsung Pay worked on this ROM I wouldn't even care about my initial question here.

It will not work. The original kernel for the device checks system verity. This is a part of locked boot loaders and android M+. If one bit of information is changed the original kernel will not boot. The reason we can root with the engineer kernel is it does not do this. Due to being in a "custom" status and non original kernel Samsung pay will not work nor will it ever work with this root method.
You have ruined my life with this response
So, why is the performance so bad on the engineering kernal?

Just the messenger lol. But honestly I can live without root. If I desperately needed root I wouldn't have bought a Samsung device as they are not the best for it. If you NEED root next time look more towards Nexus Phones, now Pixel and WAY over priced imo. Or research which phones have good root with an unlockable BL. For that I would stray from VZW branded devices and buy an unlocked version from the manufacturer that is compatible with VZW

It was used for internal testing for Samsung. This was an early version of the first kernel they had for the S7, I believe and correct me if I am wrong anyone. It was fine tuned and then released but the engineering kernel was left in the dust.

If you NEED root next time look more towards Nexus Phones, now Pixel and WAY over priced imo. Or research which phones have good root with an unlockable BL. For that I would stray from VZW branded devices and buy an unlocked version from the manufacturer that is compatible with VZW

I don't need to have root. I bought this phone fully expecting to never be able to root it again. After several months of non root usage, it was very nice to enjoy some of the luxuries of a rooted phone again. I'm still torn as to which direction to go. I use the hotspot feature daily, and it works much better now than in the unrooted world for me at least.
I just wanted to see if there was any hope for having the best of both worlds.

Sm-G892a

Anyone found full Odin restore for SM-G892A ?
Seconded. I am waiting patiently for anything about rooting this phone and hopefully even some ROM ports from the S8/+

I just picked up this phone last week and a little disappointed that there isn't any info on rooting yet. So there's currently no way? I saw multiple places saying Kingroot works partially, but it does nothing for me.
Don't hold your breath

To be honest, I wouldn't get your hopes up. I bought a Galaxy S6 Active in 2015 and there's still no reliable root method (at least according to the S6 Active forum here). I bought the S8 Active a couple weeks ago because I love the hardware (SM-G890A is still the first phone I couldn't find a way to break in two years), but I'm not banking on root happening soon. I'd love to be wrong.
1. Root is nothing but an unreliable hassle anymore. No real reason for it like there used to be.
2. The active has ALWAYS been way behind on root, IF it gets it.
So confused as to why people keep picking up phones like the snapdragon S8, active etc and THEN coming here looking for root and ROMs. You want that kind of stuff get a pixel or a Nexus. Or spend 5 minutes on Google FIRST

There are lots of reasons for wanting root.
I cant use an adblocker without a VPN without root access.
I can't make some UI adjustments even with alt. launchers and things like KLWP
I can't remove some of the bloatware from Samsung and AT&T
There are others but the adblocking method alone is a good enough reason for me
