Warning about root

if you root this phone and trip knox fuse counter. you will NEVER EVER be able to use the great feature of MST through samsung pay.
My thoughts . since we have a non root hotspot and all bloatware (which isnt that much) can be disabled
the phone has so much customization incl uded i am not rooting the phone. the battery lasts 2 days easy with medium
use. no bugs at all i can find. what more can you ask for.
Remember Root no MST (mst is the ability to use the old card swipers at any location with the phone. it sends card you addeds magnetic strip info to the swiper )
UNLESS you can root without tripping the know counter. its unreversalble
carry on

First phone I've owned that I dont see myself rooting. I really like the Samsung Pay.

After 8 generations of HTC phones, I decided to try Samsung this year as M10 rumors were they were ditching Boomsound my favorite feature of the M phones. I felt edge was far superior this year at least based on the rumors which getting this close to launch are usually spot on. I was well aware that I was going to have to decide to trip knox or not if I wanted root. While there is more customization and control with Android 6 it still doesn't compare to having everything wide open, especially if you are use to S-OFF.
Is the trade off worth it? Well I think so at least right now, this device is superior to pretty much anything out at the moment. I'm already missing Xposed, Titanium Backup & AdAway. The lock down on these devices is just getting so bad, while I understand they shouldn't come rooted out of the box but give us a choice. We may not even have the option of tripping Knox at this point. Part of the reason I stayed with Sprint for so long is they were more friendly with unlocking phones then big red but everything seems to be going the wrong direction.
Even if root is granted, it will just be patched and it's only going to get more secure and difficult each generation. I guess we just might have to start accepting that this is just how it is. Kinda sad, I'm just so use to having it even back in the Windows Mobile days I was running custom roms.

Interesting, I'm not gonna go first I still haven't decided if I wanna trip knox or not if the bootloader is in fact able to be unlocked.

as stated above there a option to
unlock the bootloader in Dev options. im not sure all the details because i see no benefit to root right now but
they do have the phone rooted and they are modding kernels and system as wee speak. also custom recovery.
TWRP will inject root upon install and start up to reboot.
This is just a warning about root to anyone so they know the Deal with Samsung pay and MST
I do see it says 900f but theres numerous reports of it working on the 900P
you know these guys are flashaholics lol

Thanks for the tip! I'm a huge fan of custom roms and the prospect of xposed so I'm very much looking forward to rooting. I'll wait a little though for a more concrete path and at least a rom to flash.

I've never used Samsung Pay but I need a rooted phone to restore a ton of data. Stock ROM is adequate for me. I played with custom ROMs years ago and they were just a time suck. I was flashing them almost daily. The stock ROM is good as long as its rooted.

Samsung pay is the only way to use MST or use ur phone for old card swipers. But thats your call

Samsung pay is useless to me. And as far as I can tell that's the only benefit to not rooting. I've read there are other benefits but that's the only one I've seen posted, Other than warranty.
To me; rooting is more beneficial. Removing advertising is the biggest. Then a basic debloated rom is second. Adding apps that are not usable on non-rooted phone would be my third reason.

I'm kinda feeling the same way. Can't use Samsung Pay as a total replacement anyway and I just looked they don't even support Capital One cards at least yet anyway. That was one thing google did right back in the day with wallet, you could link any card. Still looks cool but ad block is one of the main reasons I root as well. I'm giving AdGaurd a shot (I use that on my desktop) and you can side load it to Android it creates a local VPN connection to the app to filter all traffic. Kinda annoying you always have a notification saying it's running also doesn't block youtube ads which Xposed worked awesome for that. I miss TI as well. Warranty void I feel so so about. S-OFF you could at least remove a tampered flag on an HTC although HTC would still have record of you doing a dev unlock token even if reset everything.

Should I go ahead and go through the bootloader/rooting processes?

I've wanted to grill out some of the problems with the A7 that's came with it, but after realizing I've never done this before, I've also noticed there's no actual ROM out yet
Should I just wait until the ROM comes and maybe some full guides?

which problems are you running into right now? if you have no need for Root. i'll just say hold on till some development start to kick.......

Really just cosmetic things like the notification bell, maybe switching up the emojis, small things. I always wanted to try a different ROM on this phone, so I guess it isn't anything that needs to be done right now.

just unlocked my bootloader and rooted. Wonderful being able to use my root apps again. Chnaged my emoji using emoji switcher which i really wanted to do. Hate the stock android emoji.. debloated a little, and now about to change the system to my favorite font. I say go for it. If you do, let me know. I can send some pointers

considering there is absolutely no rom support yet I would hold off, wait out your 30 day return period and if there are roms after that and you want to void your warranty then do it then. Also I'm sure people are working on getting the bootloader unlocked without contacting ZTE so there is another reason to wait.

There is a fairly simple way to Unlock your boot loader right now, it seems to work for most people. Its possible they may figure out a way to block this in future updates (I am not an expert). If you are with in your retail return window I would recommend trying the method because if you manage to really mess something up, you can at least return it.
Just take your time.
The instructions are for multiple versions and slightly out of order. Make sure everything is working before you begin.
If you plan to go through ZTE and in theory void your warranty, then by all means wait until you really need it.

I just got my A7. Coming from OPO with a sultan rom running xposed. I want to root but honestly I am not super smart developer. I am good following direction and figuring things out. I honestly love Sulan rom and would love it on A& but I doubt he does a rom for it as he mostly is busy with school and sticks with OPO or OP3.
I am debating on rooting as I mostly just want xposed for its youtube app adblocker and in app blocking apps.
I would suggest waiting til roms are developed and little more mature. Which if judging by the speed of root being available I would say could be as soon as few months or less.

I don't think you can disable the bell and keep the lockscreen exactly as it is.

How does rooting and warranty work on this phone?

When I got my first phone (DROID RAZR M) I didn't even know what root was. After a year and my warranty's term, I found out and unlocked the bootloader just for fun. When I got my Verizon Note 4, I found out about KNOX and its hardware flag that can't be reversed. I had to wait 1.5 years for root on that anyway, but I'm keeping my Samsung tablet stock for the first year because of that flag.
My question: does LG have anything like Samsung KNOX? If I root right now, will I not just be able to flash back to stock and keep my warranty if needed? Or is LG nicer to power users?
Since I lose all data with a bootloader unlock, I'd rather do it sooner than later, but if I permanently trip some flag by doing so, I'd rather wait the year.
I've moved to T-Mobile, so I have the H918. I know I can root and I've seen the guide, but I don't know if I should root.

Up to you. Should wait for root and especially TWRP to mature. Limited right now.

It's actually really exciting to see all the development for this phone so far. I don't have much basis to judge from, but it's definitely a lot more than my Note.
So there's no hardware switch that'll be tripped? Is root reversible?

I rooted mine yesterday. When I turn it on it says that the bootloader is unlocked and I will receive that message everyday until I relock it. Im not new to rooting, and im also not a develepore, but I was checking out some of the adb and fastboot commands and I'm almost positive you could just simply reflash the stock rom and kernel, and from there use fastboot to relock the bootloader. I might try it tomorrow for you and let you know actually. Because this is the first time I have bought a brand new high end phone to actually experience the root slowly become available.
@Rbiter is correct though, other then simply just having supersu, and the simple root explorer stuff, nothing else has been upgraded really to work on nougat, and the current version of twrp is said to be sketchy when flashing stuff because it was just released not to long ago.

Well I guess Google does a pretty good job of backing up app data (which I didn't know they even did), so if I have to wipe, it probably won't be too bad.
If no one has heard of an LG KNOX equivalent, that gives me hope that there is none, and I'll be able to revert, which is definitely a plus for LG.

Yeah well this is my first LG, my last android was the AT&T Samsung galaxy 4, and then I switched to iphone for a little like a year or so, but I've heard nothing but great things about lg, except for there UI I think its called? There touchwiz or something of the sort is a little bloated' but hey that's why I am so excited for the custom roms and kernels! I truly wish I had on hands training with making one or the other. It would totally be my number one hobby!

My bad xD this thread is under the LG V20 so I just assumed that it was just another model of the v20. I have no idea, did a quick Google search and it appears there are some posts on it being able to be rooted, I dont like the hole Knox thing. They should just let us be free to do with what we want with the product we bought

Is root possible on SM-G930P with G930PVPSACSF1?

Purchased a refurb S7 on eBay on the premise that it'd likely be on old firmware like most refurbs and I'd be able to root easy peasy- turns out it's running android 8.0.0 and baseband G930PVPSACSF1 and had everything updated last month and promptly wanted to check for even more updates when I started it up.
I've seen a lot of back and forth about which s7's can be rooted but nothing specific to this version as for some inexplicable version it appears Sprint released this update just recently for a three year old device.
I've spent most of this evening searching and haven't found anything that seems to indicate one way or the other. If I've missed something super obvious, I'd be grateful if somebody could point me in the direction of whatever reading I need to do to figure this out.

EDIT: One other thought- I've been looking into whether Magisk is a possible solution but I've seen a lot of different info as to whether it would even work on this variant of the phone, especially since TWRP seems to only have recoveries available for the international variants. Am I wasting time looking that way? I've also posted on the Magisk discussion thread to ask about it but I thought it was worth checking this forum as well since it's specifically for this phone.

No and I wouldn't hold by breath either. Rooting has always been iffy on this phone from the start

@CyberSA @ekco06 I haven't seen anything and I'm torn between going ahead and flashing the 930U firmware and just returning the phone and getting something easier to root. The main thing I need is to be able to have unlimited wifi tether which seems to be possible with that firmware, but being able to use Titanium backup would also be really nice as it's been a staple for me so far.

Check out pdanet. It works well, but requires you to create a proxy to connect, but super easy. Probably won't work on game consoles, but works well on PCs

Quick update: Jumping ship. This phone is being returned and I'm grabbing a google pixel xl - much cheaper, same general age, less bloatware, easier to root, and better camera from all indications.

Ever phone or tablet I buy is always the one that cant be rooted without a pc. Everytime Odin required, so sick of it. I thought they were supposed to make a universal platform that all androids adhered to. What happened to that?

No thats not universal enough. Go through the compatability list for framaroot, or master root and that will give your answer. I just want my phones to be on the same level. All on that list or not but there shouldnt be an in between

Okay but how am I going to show proof? Those one click root apps wouldnt be around if they didnt work...Look at towelroot as well, and also kingroot. Lots of options even though I have no proof

Rooting a tablet is a security risk that manufacturers don't WANT users to take. They want rooting to be difficult. So, IMO, it is down right silly to think they'd intentionally let some apps, like the ones you mentioned, defeat their purpose. And NONE of those apps work on a high percentage of the tablets on the market today.
If having a tablet that can be rooted by one of them is that important to you, then I'd suggest you check the list BEFORE you make your purchase rather than whining about it when they don't work.

They DON'T work that is the point. The fact that you actually mentioned towel root implies that you've been trawling the Internet and you don't quite know where things are up to with root.
Those exploits have long since been patched. Pretty much no one click root's work on any recent device.
Google have patched all current exploits. Any decent manufacturer should have updated their firmware to include the patches.
Anything MM onwards is unlikely to work with one of these one click root apps.
Any device that does simply means the manufacturer doesn't care about security or has abandoned the device.
My point here is that pretty much no device works with any of these one click root's anymore.
You have a device made by a manufacturer that cares about security.

Millions of devices are currently using the only real root solution avaliable, Magisk, which requires a PC.

Oh but i do check before I make a purchase. But everytime for one reason or another things change or an update comes and all of a sudden, now you need Odin. That why im pissed kid.
Also im sure the companies arent letting anyone root by choice. They would rather have you pay $1200 for an official unlocked phone...lol...But yes those apps can and will work on many phones running 8.1 and before.. perhaps you should do your homework instead of sticking your head in the sand

Hey cool story but it doesnt apply here. Im sure you can see the title, read it....t580....Hardly cutting edge stuff. If i could downgrade i would but i cant without a pc. I accidently upgraded my tablet and screwed myself. Those apps wont work on a galaxy S10 or galaxy 4 tablet but if i hadnt upgraded i would have used that and it woulda worked. Is chainfire around? He could shed some light if hes still on this

Not being rude, but you really have no idea.
If you actually understood anything about root and kept with the times, you would be aware why non of these exploits work on anything beyond Lollipop. Marshmallow if you're lucky and haven't updated.
Supersu stopped working with most devices at Nougat and not at all with Oreo or anything beyond.

I understand all of that just fine, thats not what i was talking about. I mentioned chainfire not because of supersu but because when I used to be on this site daily chainfire would help me out every now and then. Im going to assume hes not so active in here anymore, but maybe im wrong.

Chain fire sold supersu to a Chinese developer who has since abandoned it.
Chain fire announced his retirement from development a while back.
Magisk is now the only true root solution and even Magisk is constantly having to evolve to keep in the game.
All the other solutions you refer to were simply exploits that leveraged a vulnerability in the running system and have long since been patched even on older devices.
Magisk is not an exploit that leverages a vulnerability, but is a chain of modifications to the running system which is implemented both at the installation stage and at boot time. Similar to how Supersu used to work, but in a more advanced way which creates its own environment.

Also im sure the companies arent letting anyone root by choice. They would rather have you pay $1200 for an official unlocked phone...lol...But yes those apps can and will work on many phones running 8.1 and before.. perhaps you should do your homework instead of sticking your head in the sand

That's BS. I've had a T580 since 2016 and you've never been able to root one without Odin. There is NO WAY it is on a list for one of those apps. If you just bought the T580 and checked and found it on one, name the one. Put up or shut up.
