Hello and welcoming myself to this new community of SGS 2 users. Coming from the HTC Desire section, I am quite confounded (entirely my own fault, of course) by the sheer confusion between the "Original Development" and the, uh, "Derivative Development" sections. More on that later, but...
Now what's REALLY confusing me is the complete lack of a start to finish rooting guide, or even a CWM guide for the SGS2 in the forum. Does anyone around have good link, and also where should I go to for my first ROM? Any ideas?
Go for the big well-known roms to start. VillainROM, Cognition or Lightning Rom. They all have tutorials to flash the specific roms when coming from stock.
I came from the Desire too, the weird thing about the SGS2 is that you flash roms that have the root installed in there. So you flash a rom with a rooted kernel inside of it, your phone is rooted. Change the kernel only to a stock one, root is gone.
So check the rom threads.

i used the latter to root my phone yesterday, a first for me, since this is my first android phone, and it worked at once and it took less than 10 minutes till i was up and running again.

It took me a while to get up to speed with the way things are here too.
The usual steps would be:
- download a stock rom
- flash cf-root
- choose your custom rom
From here onwards, its an ocean of info.

There are no pretty guides because , its so extremely easy to root SGS2 , all you do is flash "cf kernel with CWM" via ODIN = done you rooted
Then you have CWM recovery and you can flash any SGS2 ROM. No need for any hacks or exploits.

I was confounded by the mere mention of ODIN. Apparently, everybody knew where to download/get it and how to use it but nobody provided a link. I sorted that out anyway.
I had to appreciate the relative openness of Samsung vs. HTC at this point

Welcome to the sgsii forums! I hope more and more people jump on the international bandwagon. I came from the samsung captivate forums so this wasn't that big of a difference. I think over time this forum will get better and more organized, as it's still relatively new.

Anyway, the breakdown of my problem is this;
I wanted to root my new day old Sprint CMDA Nexus S, I've never rooted anything android, and if anything the most I've done with a droid OS is installed it on my old iphone 2g.
So I did some googling and first thing to come up was this guide:

Now, usually I would do a bit more research, but because of the lack of blood in my body I'm doing dumb things, making bad decisions, whatever.
So obviously this guide doesn't work, even a quick skim of the comments shows that, I try to follow this guide-
I followed step "fastboot flash boot rootboot.img" then tried to reboot. It freezes at the google boot logo. This is where I start getting a bit nervous because I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
So I think "Well, if I jump over to someone elses tutorial and do that it should overwrite any "root"ing data I've tried to put into the device.
So I jump over to this:
androidadvices(dotcom)/root-sprint-nexus-gingerbread-235-update/3/
It has me install PDANet and it's frozen since on the installing PDAnet to your phone.
I just want to get my Nexus S back to original factory default so I can start fresh from there without a terrible guide.
Can someone please help me get there?

Ok I can see you need help but I am inclined to warn you instead. Stop. If you cannot figure out how to root the easiest phone to root then you shouldn't be messing around with your phone. You will end up screwing something up, won't know how to fix it, and come crying here for help. Do yourself some research before you go and ruin your phone.
Yes you posted in the wrong place.
There is a thread in this forum on how to root the nexus s 4g. Rooting is model specific. The T-Mobile Nexus s is different from the sprint, att, Rodgers, o2 etc.
Please please do some more research!

if you can get into fastboot then you are still cool, if not you're gonna have to odin it. I dont actually know where the tar files are, Micheal posted it up but i think they deleted the thread. You should have came to xda first,we have one clicks.
actually rooting is the same across the board. same steps same everything... in fact the one click root version 1 would work on any and all of them, version 2 branches out a bit further due to that it installs cwm.
anyways boot into fastboot, download stock fastboot images from petes thread found here http://wonderly.com/bb/CRESPO4G/OEM/GRJ22IMAGES.zip and flash them all in fastboot.
youll be back on stock grj22 but youll at least be booting.. from there follow a guide for rooting this phone that has you flash cwm (not a prerooted kernel). or be lazy and use my one click root

I have been trying to make sure I take all the correct steps before attempting a root. Some of the software references in the forum have me confused. If someone could help me with these I would very much appreciate it.

I followed some references in other threads and got the Titanium Backup (free version) in hopes that I can backup the entire tablet. Is this what I would use to keep my apps/data and bring it back to the tablet after rooting?
2) I also got the Acer Recovery app. This looks as though it is used to bring the tablet back to stock form. Is that correct?
3) Is the term "root" in reference to gaining root permissions/access to the tablet, and nothing else? (I was under the impression that it was the installation of a ROM)
4) I have 3.2.1 on my tablet. It looks as though at this point in time, the only way I can root is to bring it back to at least 3.2 ot less (reference to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227&page=11)

HC=Honeycomb (the version of Android that is currently on your tab).
No difference, in the name for market, some people just use a different term.
2. No it doesn't. It will install CWM which will make a backup of your current ROM which you can flash to go back to original.
3. Root allows you to install CWM which will in turn allow you to flash custom ROMs.
4. Yes you will need to downgrade first, make certain you have everything you need already downloaded and on your external SD card.
5. Read, READ, READ, READ, take notes, and follow instructions to the letter. We certainly don't need another "help, I bricked my tab" thread lol
1) No difference, Google Market/App Store yada yada yada.
a) HC = Honey Comb, it is Googles internal name for their OS from versions 3.x
- If you go to Settings - Privacy, put a check in the boxes for "Back up my data" and "Automatic restore". Doing this alone has been enough for Google to automatically re-install about 99% of my apps.
2) Acer Recovery makes it easier to install the various Recovery images. It does not alone help you get back to "bone stock", but it at least will re-install the stock Recovery image if and when you're ready to go back to the stock ROM.
3) Root is getting root access to the device, which is generally needed to install custom ROMs, so I could see the confusion.
4) Almost right, you'll need to bring it back to 3.0.1 first. Be sure to have already downloaded and installed at least Acer Recovery and IconiaRoot before downgrading, as the Market is flakey as heck when you downgrade to 3.0.1. I followed method 2 in that thread and had 0 issues.
5) Not needed, see my info after 1,a).

In reference to your answers:
#3 - Am I correct in saying that I can get root access without applying a new ROM?
#4 - I have an SD card, and it looks as though with the downloads and what not, the tablet is not even using it.
How (I am sure to get a "use search" answer with someone...) do I force the tablet to download these things I need to the SD card?
Do I need an additional SD card to be used for this process only?
I see that you are working on a version of your ROM for 3.2.1, shall I just wait to avoid problems?
#5 - I have been trying to read as many "brick" threads as I can in order to avoid them.

I did find the IconiaRoot thread by Thor. It looks as though this is the reason for bringing the version back to 3.0.1, true? Not to many usable answers to the questions asked in that thread, that are answered by the OP. I will try and search for people using it and starting their own thread.
This looks to be a Windows piece of software, maybe I can get it to run on my virtual box... or wine... . I guess I could try it on my work machine.
IconiaRoot is the app to actually use the exploit found to root the device and give you root access. Now, the reason for going to 3.0.1 is because the exploit was fixed by Acer is version 3.2. So, the downgrade is needed first so that the exploit is available to root your device.

if you are on STOCK FROM ACER.. 3.2 OR ABOVE . you must DOWNGRADE TO GET ROOT..
The best way to do this to date seems to be in the past by Jimmy Dean.. there are links to his threads in nearly every recent bricked or threads similar to yours..
im guessing if you have looked at all the threads about being bricked and still do not understand how to do it..or scared to try .
DO NOT ATTEMPT
MAYBE you should ask a dev if you can send your tablet to them in the mail and them flash it for you.. Would be my best sugestion.. Everyone that flashes anything on there tablet or any ROM BASED Device takes the risk of bricking.. IF you have read other bricking related threads you will see people complain they fallowed all instructions and still ended up bricked.. Maybe to falt of there own they missed or maybe just luck of the Flash..
Good Luck and look for Jimmy Deans post in the d/load he gives a very detailed instructions with step by step pictures. as some of the others do as well..

Either way, this is not my first time to the rodeo, and not my first time on a forum where there are people that want to constantly show how tough they are. I have seen your posts in other threads and know what to expect from you. Because I am new here, I will not use the language I am tempted to with you.

All im saying is that if you have read all the threads and post about bricked devices bad flashing stories and the threads on how to do it correctly.. That there is nothing more anyone can do or say to you about this.. Only other option is for someone to do it for you.. I did not mean to offend you in any way.
Its kinda unclear what you expected to get out of starting a thread stating that you read everything good and bad.. about flashing this tablet.. maybe the solution is to go to android sdk site and get better acquainted with the OS on a more personal level.. if you are still not understanding the process .

OK, erica_renee, I need to come back and give a real apology. I am having a hard day at work today and was looking toward learning a new process on my latest toy to give me a little relaxation. I just had a customer blaming my additions to the software as the cause of their problems. Not sure if you code for a living, but that is not a fun conversation.
Sorry if I was mean, I just want to learn and not be treated like an idiot. I just want to be as educated as possible before I make a move. I see to many people getting educated because they broke something.

Considering that a lot of gentry is unawares of how to go back to their nandroid back ups from the 'unsafe' 4.04 Stock Builds and are afraid to flash kernels fearing that their beloved may develop cataract, get pimples or maybe pass way (god rest their souls..) , below is the most foolproof, noob friendly way of going back to stock set up while circumventing the dreaded 'emmc_cap_erase' bug...
- Go to Intratech's thread of all stock firmwares in Original Development section.
- Download Stock KL1 <http://hotfile.com/dl/146342883/c1bdbd7/I9100XWKL1_I9100ODDKL1_INU.zip.html> (because it is no wipe) + Odin tool (you did flash LPM/LPO/LQ5/LQ6, exactly the same way!!!)
- Switch off your phone, restart in Download mode (Volume Down+Home+Power), you will see a flash page, choose to continue.
- Fire up Odin, confirm that the phone is connected, Click on 'PDA' and add KL1, flash KL1.
- First reboot, phone will bootloop.
- Switch off, restart in stock recovery (Volume Up + Home + Power)
- Do a factory reset.
That is it!!! Your beloved has been saved from Satanic evil...! Now install your favorite GB/ 4.03 ROM/ CM9 or CM9 derivatives or restore a nandroid back up (if you had any... )

this is not a fix. this is a method to prevent brick. if you brickef it allready like I did, only PBA main replacement solves it.

I did exactly as stated in OP.. I just happened to read around before flashing ROMs ( ***noob flashaholics*** ).. And hence, even though I have an unsafe chip and after flashing LQ5, LPM and going back to VR 3.0 and now running LPO.. I write this from my phone..

Yes mate, it works for LPO as well. You should flash a GB rom so that the unsafe kernel kernel is overwritten by a GB kernel which is completely safe before the phone or you attempt a wipe.
No it is not bad for your phone. In fact trying anthing else can be fatal for your phone.
Once you have taken the steps I have provided, you can flash the JB preview from CWM from the GB ROM.

He's actually right. Flash siyah or another custom kernel and you're good to go. Looks like the latest speedmod is safe as well.
To reset the counter and get rid of the triangle, use chainfire's app.
Or flash an older GB boot loader from Intratech's thread and use a jig.

As I said, give me a step by step method and I will add it to the OP. Or else forever maintain your peace.
My method is simple, requires no additional tinkering apart from the steps I have mentioned. Not all people like Siyah (3.1 brick incident) or want to go through the hassle of running a kernel cleaning script.
I want to keep it simple... You are free to open an another thread with the steps you feel are simplest.. You could call it "Simpler than Simplest...."

Use the Indian version, it is a no wipe.. You can then flash your own country's firmware over it..
Well, the <samsung-updates.com> is down for the moment, it has faster links. I guess megaupload it is for the moment then..

To have an informative thread an OP should first learn how to search and read. People suggested that you should search for it, which everybody knows is the answer for almost everything. If you want to know how to remove the triangle and add them to your first post, you should do your research first instead of asking the guy to spoon feed you the solution. Using TraingleAway is a no brainer, just simply flash an ICS ROM, run the app, press whatever is needed to be pressed (of course you need to verify that the information about, if you have a triangle or how many binary counts you have etc is correct), let it reboot and the binary counter and triangle will be gone. Of course just saying that won't guarantee the success of every people using it. There are some instances that problems occur that i haven't put in my so called "guide" for triangle away. The only way is to read the original post of TraingleAway thread.
If you want to help people by answering their query is to acquire knowledge on how to do things etc. You can't do that if you won't try to search and understand the subject first. Spoon feeding is the last thing we, as members of this developer site, should do.
Anyway, i am not here to bash you or anything. Of course i appreciate this thread because it will help people who are unaware how to safely flash their phone if they are on the famous "brickable ROM/Kernel". I am just here to remind you that no matter who we/you are, everyone needs to do their research first rather than people just giving you all the answer to everything. After all, using TriangleAway is "RISKY (well, i haven't heard anyone bricking their phone yet with it)" according to its developer hence the need to read its thread first before posting a guide to your thread. Good luck to you and your thread and hope you understand what i am talking about.

Sorry to rant, but I know this forum is to help people get more from their phones, but quite a lot of people still are incompetent, and can't follow basic instructions!!!! Take for instance, the modem problem, where you lose your imei or imei starts with 0049, read the stickies!!! Read the guides!!! Back up your efs!!! Virtually every post in dev forum has someone who didn't read properly!!! Another thing is people not understanding what BETA means!!! Android 4.3 is fairly new, and the great devs have done a sterling job bringing it to our s3's....things are not gonna work perfectly straight from the off! There will be bugs!! Please please use search first!!!!

A standard in flashing anything is make a good nandroid you can go bk on and many efs bkups and have the right modem. And last but not least don't flash nothing that's not ment for your phone. It's just a shame that s3 threads are full of old information that's no use to no one now a days. S2 threads are upto date and more useful I have found.

I understand the changes it's had but say for instance root. I had problems rooting this the other day. I really wanted to stay away from odin cuz I don't like it and it bricks phone. I looked and read for guides on how to but all that was there was no good for me. But alone my travels I learned a lot about how efs changed and am very grateful for the info that has bin put down about this. But it's scattered info. If some one made a guide and made it a sticky on how to root for every change then I could of just gone to this read it and would never of had to ask the question. On s2 there is a guide on how to root every firmware all in one. Read it and jobs done your rooted weather is gb or ics or jb it's all there and how to do it. If more thread like this are made then it would be a better place I think. Same with imei problems. Read it and jobs done. Imei sorted. Like I said the info on s3 is scattered about and hard to find what's right and what's not. Odin lol info on that I went bk to @Hopper8 guide on that cuz it's probably the best guide out there on any thread to solve problems with it. I read I understood and rooted my phone no problems. Like I said iv never use odin but now I'm the boss of odin. But if I did have problems I no that guide would of got me out of the jam. Basics are one thing but actually using these are different in the real world.

Pm'd jonnny for advice about noob thread. Good thread, absent op. Needs to go (shame) or not point to cf root as cwm 5 is sds dangerous
Pm'd op of flashing guide as root method is insecure kernel flash. Ics method. No response. Offline for months. Again shame to lose. Will ask @Jonny for advice

Iv spent all my time on xda on s2 threads.
Odin don't brick phones people brick phones. But the risk of using odin over cwm/twrp is massive. Say the power go's out or pc/laptop shuts down... Game over. This is why I never used Odin or had to in just under two years with my s2. I read lots of threads just for the sake of it. Stickies I never did. One reason... No user feed bk. Real world feed bk cuz there locked. You see no one really wants to go from link to Link to link and read and read and read when if a thread was opened and all them links were all in the same thread at the top and users could add there own feed bk to it on how they did restore there imei and others could read it and work out how to do it there self instead of posting "how do I restore imei" think about it... If a thread was in q and a now on how to do that there would be half them threads not made. Like in s2 q and a. Take a look at "how to restore you imei in 9 steps" on q and a. Great feed bk and people send people there. It's well known and used. If you can't restore from that it's service centre job.

The "stickies" aren't actually stickied. Just linked in one locked sticky to keep it tidy. All those threads linked have user feedback.

Why not create a new thread for the noob and flashing guides, copy the previous posts but correct with current info, then adjust sticky to point to the new thread.
Original poster could still be acknowledged, without leaving noobs using dangerous tools.

If I had the time, I would consider it but they both only need a tiny adjustment. 1 needs to point to cf auto root. Another needs root section removed. Rather than remove the thread, if a moderator would allow the concept of suggesting the updates, that's the quickest step. If not, then your suggestion is the only realistic one. Lets see what jonny says. I don't really like replacing existing threads with my own unless completely necessary.

In the i9300 roll-up sticky thread, the 2nd and 3rd guides both point to outdated root methods. Would like to hear your opinions on how to deal with them. Shame to lose them. Edit preferable from my perspective but what's your take?

I'm a s3 noob but had no probs rooting (without odin) and flashing roms. All the info is there if u can be bothered to read. I knew all about imei etc well before I even got the phone. The problem nowadays is that its too easy to root and flash, which means that a user do not need any knowledge of android. Its like giving a 5 year old a gun, eventually something bad will happen.

First thing to do would be to PM the OP's of those threads and ask if they would be willing to update their threads, if they are then great, if not then if someone is willing I can transfer the post ownership to them to edit
Edit: Yes editing would be preferable to deleting the threads.

No. No. No. There is literally a millisecond of flashing that can fully brick your device if you lose power. The files are SO small that they're done in less than the blink of an eye. If you lose power on system, cache, data, kernel, or recovery flashing. Its always recoverable. (As long as its for your device originally.)

It took 1min and 30sec for auto root to finish and odin to say pass on the laptop.
My point is is that I think that cwm/twrp is safer. Much much safer than odin. And if a person flashes something not ment for your phone then that person needs to buy an iPhone and stay well aways from Android.
