Hello and welcoming myself to this new community of SGS 2 users. Coming from the HTC Desire section, I am quite confounded (entirely my own fault, of course) by the sheer confusion between the "Original Development" and the, uh, "Derivative Development" sections. More on that later, but...
Now what's REALLY confusing me is the complete lack of a start to finish rooting guide, or even a CWM guide for the SGS2 in the forum. Does anyone around have good link, and also where should I go to for my first ROM? Any ideas?
Go for the big well-known roms to start. VillainROM, Cognition or Lightning Rom. They all have tutorials to flash the specific roms when coming from stock.
I came from the Desire too, the weird thing about the SGS2 is that you flash roms that have the root installed in there. So you flash a rom with a rooted kernel inside of it, your phone is rooted. Change the kernel only to a stock one, root is gone.
So check the rom threads.

also here is a good collection of shipped roms and another rooting guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
i used the latter to root my phone yesterday, a first for me, since this is my first android phone, and it worked at once and it took less than 10 minutes till i was up and running again.
Why don’t we all take a breather and don't mistreat the newbie..I mean the new user.

As MTM said, take a couple of breaths and learn how to be nice to your fellow forum members. Next person to be disrespectful will earn a temporary ban. You have been warned.
It took me a while to get up to speed with the way things are here too.
The usual steps would be:
- download a stock rom
- flash cf-root
- choose your custom rom
From here onwards, its an ocean of info.

There are no pretty guides because , its so extremely easy to root SGS2 , all you do is flash "cf kernel with CWM" via ODIN = done you rooted
Then you have CWM recovery and you can flash any SGS2 ROM. No need for any hacks or exploits.

I was confounded by the mere mention of ODIN. Apparently, everybody knew where to download/get it and how to use it but nobody provided a link. I sorted that out anyway.
I had to appreciate the relative openness of Samsung vs. HTC at this point

The Epic forum has become too congested with problematic kernals, roms, and even the clockwork mod isn't working the way it should. There are so many threads on getting clockwork mod to work thats its become ridiculous. I believe this needs to be monitored more closely. For example, i look on how to flash clockwork recovery mod, and there are 4 different threads, with 4 different kernals with recovery mods, and 4 different clockwork mod files. Its way too confusing and most of them don't work with the update, or is causing bad things to happen to phones. Nothing is consistent with these kernals, roms, and recoveries. I put this thread in the development section because it all has to do with development of the Epic. Forum just seems congested to me.

You're new to the whole Android thing, huh? This is what development is.
There is ONE working Clockwork Mod Recovery right now, and Koush himself released it. There is a flashable .zip kernel for the people who had the old version, noobnl version.
There are multiple kernels out because they do different things for the phone.
We also have two versions of root access right now. The one click root method we have stickied at the top is janky and inefficient compared to the kernel root we have.
This is how Android development works, especially until we have some full-fledged ROMs available. Threads like this make it harder for new users to get through this section (Now, when someone searches "Clockwork" or anything related, this completely unhelpful thread comes up). This is not Android development.

Dude, sometimes ppl can step in **** and still walk on a clean carpet without wiping their feet off first. It's funny how they can just dump on someone when they are merely expressing what they feel about how the forums is. i would have to somewhat agree with you, I've been searching through the **** for over two weeks and still noone has a goddamn real fix for getting a phone to boot into the right recovery mode. I still haven't been able to enjoy not one of these so-called roms as of yet. Even after doing everything to the tee. I have root...but don't think I have permanent root. Tried the fix for that....no happenings. They work hard to make these roms and I really would appreciate it if I could actually use them. I'm a persistant mofo tho...still trying at it...just make it a bit more easier to find what I need to get this **** to work.

As for you, I'm not the one crying. And if you read what I said, you'd know that I've been doing my research for 2 weeks. Why are you such an ass when it comes to ppl needing help with something. Did you forget that you wasn't exactly born into this world with a encyclopedia in your hand, was you? Remember? You needed help once before and maybe you got it figured out real quickly. That doen't nessecarily mean that everyone who comes to this forum are capable. SO PLAY NICE!!!
First thing you need is the drivers for your phone, there's several links to get those. You need sdk to do the one click. It needs to be in the sdk folder. After I downloaded sdk I unzipped it to drive c and renamed it android cause it's shorter than the original name. You open it and in the root of that folder is a folder called tools extract the one click here. Same goes for clockwork. Make sure you enable debugging on the phone. And don't mount your sd card. There's a tutorial on what to do with sdk on you tube. Really you don't even need root anymore if you have clockwork cause all the kernels come with root now. Unless you want to use a stock kernel then you use the method I described above. After you one click the clockwork mod you need to turn off your phone and power on holding the volume button down, pressing the camera button and the power button to boot into recovery. Make a back up of your phone and then reboot. Now just download whatever you want, boot into recovery and install. Sdx developers has some tutorials over on they're site as well. Hope this helps. Remember, cussing people just pisses people off, then you will be on your own.

I've only had this phone and only worked with an android phone for less than a month, so I admit that I am new to the scene...but I will have to disagree to the rant. It took me a while to root my phone and get clockwork. But it wouldn't have happened unless there was the "clutter" of ways to do it. The only mistake I made was assuming that I understood the whole post and skipped ahead. And that's what slowed me down. Personally I don't think there really is much of an issue with the forum. The only issue is some people aren't patient enough to read the whole post and screw up then blame others for their mistake. But what can you say, its human nature. There's also the wiki you can go to and that'll help out, it's all categorized nice and neatly for some to read if the forum is too much.

Obviously the OP has had enormous difficulty modding his phone. I extend my sympathies, and if there's anything I can do to help down the road, I will certainly try.
However, many if not most of us have had no trouble at all. In my case, I successfully rooted, installed clockworkrecovery, backed up, and flashed the Mixup kernel. No meaningful stumbles along the way, went smoothly.
So, blaming the forum seems rather misplaced. I don't know what's unique about kpkimmel's situation, but it's pretty clear that the problem lies there, not with the forum, information posted here, and the very helpful people assisting.
I'm sure the solution to the poblem would be an easy fix. As long as the the problem explained. The answer could be as simple as doing the 3-button sequence to get into cwm, or just wiping the phone to prep for flashing.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
LMFAO!!!! You sho right...there is an easy solution to the problem and you wouldn't believe how freaking easy it is. Like I've said before, I've been doing the research and everything and nothing seem to work right. I have rooted my phone and have proven it so by doing the tests. But the damn thing would not go into Clockwork recovery no matter how many times I tried. Until last night on another website, the answer was plain and simple as big as day. When I did as instructed, lo and behold, it worked....I have Clockwork recovery. I can use the roms now. Gonna go post it in the 'Epic 4G Android Development.' Don't know why it hasn't been made know to those having this problem in the first place. Woulda save a bunch of time and headaches.
Come on guys, enough with the extremely complicated rooting process on the galaxy tab. Where's Unrevoked for the gtab? Or the other mainstream android devices.. There are more acronyms being thrown around in the development forum than needs to be. It's obvious many people don't have a clue what they're talking about.
All of my devices are rooted with some flavor of gingerbread (CM7,SalvageMod) excluding my tablet. I know that posting a whiny thread isn't going to motivate anyone but it may give some perspective.. SuperOneClick is about as close as i've seen it come to the what-should-be one click experience.
This forum is frequented by some of the most brilliant hacker/developers our world has to offer, I'm baffled that the galaxy tab is still a bastard child.

Yeah I should have been more clear.. flashing the right binaries and not going down a one way street with your tablet.. I have root, root is nothing special to the average user.
Rotohammer, technomancer, etc I know they do wonderful work. Technomancer is the very reason CM7 is running on the gtab
Anybody aware of any ROM developers (for any device, curious) that may have actually developed a complete root/rom application for windows/osx/linux? As in, click a button, root, adb push some files, reboot and start the install process?
Thanks!
I think you need to make the distinction between rooting and flashing a ROM or people might be confused by the thread title:
CyanogenMod 7 (CM7), MoDaCo Custom ROM, Rotohammer ROMs...these are all cooked or modified ROMs which can be flashed onto a device to give it (or remove from it) certain features. Root user access can be one of these features.
Rooting is the process of gaining access to the root (Super User) account on the device and thus being able to run applications which would have otherwise been restricted access to certain areas of the filesystem.
So flashing a custom ROM can be synonymous with rooting, but not vice versa.
I feel the same about the tab threads. The discussions, flashing, etc are seem a bit complicated. I am very greatful for all the work that the dev and chefs do, but it is easier to flash CWM and Android to my winmo HD2 than it is to put a custom rom on my tab!!! I have yet to make any mods to the tab othern than rooting because I really dont want to mess things up. I am waiting and hoping this process becomes simpler soon.

The MoDaCo kernel effectively does what you want - gives you CWM in recovery so you can apply update.zip files same as you would on an HD2, with the exception of radio images (as far as I'm aware, though even that should be possible).
Yes, you need to use Odin/Heimdall to flash the modified kernel to begin with, but that isn't exactly much of a hardship.

I have to agree. I thought coming over here while being an avid T-Mo Vibrant flasher that this would be a breeze. I have been real adamant about doing anything other than root my Tab because there seems to be more of a difference in things than I thought.
I am not one to come in and ask questions when I know the answers are out there, but I haven't been able to find a straight answer. I don't even know if what is already on my Tab is the newest or if I am missing out. Yes, the MoDaCo kernel -- very simple to install -- it will include CWM and convert your filesystem to ext4. Even if you leave it at that, with your stock ROM, the difference is incredible.

Use the kernal by Chainfire on top of Roto JMI. That will give you the CWM3 in one simple step.
You go on to the other kernals if you want to change your format of your internal sd card to the ext4 format instead of the rfs format.

The tab is a very wide distribution, so people of very different backgrounds are on these forums asking many of the same questions. On other forums someone asking a question that was previously answered usually gets disemboweled, but here we have a more patient tone, so instead of thinking before posting, we get way more than our share of "help, I think I melted my precious".
The tab is really just a bigger vibrant. They are 6 months further along than us. In 6 months this thing will make us toast and coffee.

Thanks for your reply. I think I have visited that page, among many others.
I was kinda hoping for a pointer to a single simple topic entitled something like "[HOWTO] Flash a Legend rom from a zip" but am coming to the conclusion there is no such thing.
Guess life is not that straightforward in Legend Land, so I must keep trawling the many threads and try to piece together what goes on.

Question - If you are rooted this is a no brainer. YOU JUST SAY NO... what ever they are offering you has probably been in the forum as a rom for quite some time. If they are offering you an update it probably means you are running an older rooted rom. Just update to the new rooted one in the development section.

You could download it but I wouldn't recommend it. Best case scenario is you would just loose root. worse case is it won't boot (soft bricked) after install because it's not upgrading a "stock" phone. Pretty sure you will just loose root as tiamat 1.4.4 is not really a true full rom it's just a kernel.
Anyways I recommend you follow the instructions at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074979to put on the "right" clockworkmod recovery. and then put on The HammerHead Rom (which is based on 3.2) at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203635 the Hammerhead rom runs perfect for me (and most everyone else). Then put on the 3.2 Overclocked Kernel at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200063
I was basically in your situation and I got all that done and all my 100+ apps reinstalled (using Titanium Pro) and basically everything set back up in about 2.5 hours.

I do wonder why people do the minimal searching... I took the time to learn this stuff so why can they... It does get frustrating
Sorry. Not trying toput the OP down.. I mean we all start somewhere, but google and search feature are huge helps =)
***This is not for devices that have already been bricked. It applies to only those people who have inadvertantly flashed one of the 'Unsafe' 4.04 ROMs and wish to change ROMs or restore back their nandroid backup.***
Hi All,
Considering that a lot of gentry is unawares of how to go back to their nandroid back ups from the 'unsafe' 4.04 Stock Builds and are afraid to flash kernels fearing that their beloved may develop cataract, get pimples or maybe pass way (god rest their souls..) , below is the most foolproof, noob friendly way of going back to stock set up while circumventing the dreaded 'emmc_cap_erase' bug...
- Go to Intratech's thread of all stock firmwares in Original Development section.
- Download Stock KL1 <http://hotfile.com/dl/146342883/c1bdbd7/I9100XWKL1_I9100ODDKL1_INU.zip.html> (because it is no wipe) + Odin tool (you did flash LPM/LPO/LQ5/LQ6, exactly the same way!!!)
- Switch off your phone, restart in Download mode (Volume Down+Home+Power), you will see a flash page, choose to continue.
- Fire up Odin, confirm that the phone is connected, Click on 'PDA' and add KL1, flash KL1.
- First reboot, phone will bootloop.
- Switch off, restart in stock recovery (Volume Up + Home + Power)
- Do a factory reset.
That is it!!! Your beloved has been saved from Satanic evil...! Now install your favorite GB/ 4.03 ROM/ CM9 or CM9 derivatives or restore a nandroid back up (if you had any... )
I hope this helps...

this is not a fix. this is a method to prevent brick. if you brickef it allready like I did, only PBA main replacement solves it.

I did exactly as stated in OP.. I just happened to read around before flashing ROMs ( ***noob flashaholics*** ).. And hence, even though I have an unsafe chip and after flashing LQ5, LPM and going back to VR 3.0 and now running LPO.. I write this from my phone..

Can someone confirm that this works when going from LPO backwars? Also why should I flash from ICS rom to GB rom? Isn't that bad for the phone? I wanna go to some stock rom from where I can flash the jelly bean preview

Yes mate, it works for LPO as well. You should flash a GB rom so that the unsafe kernel kernel is overwritten by a GB kernel which is completely safe before the phone or you attempt a wipe.
No it is not bad for your phone. In fact trying anthing else can be fatal for your phone.
Once you have taken the steps I have provided, you can flash the JB preview from CWM from the GB ROM.

I got a simpler way
flash siyah via heimdall/odin,
boot into recovery,
???
Profit

Indeed, now can you please explain step by step how to get rid of the triangle and restore the binary counter to 0. (with appropriate links).
I'll add it to the OP.

Use triangle away or a usb jig on an older bootloader.

Give me a step by step guide and I'll add to the OP. Else stop trolling the thread trying to portray a higher level of intellect or smartassness..

He's actually right. Flash siyah or another custom kernel and you're good to go. Looks like the latest speedmod is safe as well.
To reset the counter and get rid of the triangle, use chainfire's app.
Or flash an older GB boot loader from Intratech's thread and use a jig.

As I said, give me a step by step method and I will add it to the OP. Or else forever maintain your peace.
My method is simple, requires no additional tinkering apart from the steps I have mentioned. Not all people like Siyah (3.1 brick incident) or want to go through the hassle of running a kernel cleaning script.
I want to keep it simple... You are free to open an another thread with the steps you feel are simplest.. You could call it "Simpler than Simplest...."

Use the Indian version, it is a no wipe.. You can then flash your own country's firmware over it..
Well, the <samsung-updates.com> is down for the moment, it has faster links. I guess megaupload it is for the moment then..

To have an informative thread an OP should first learn how to search and read. People suggested that you should search for it, which everybody knows is the answer for almost everything. If you want to know how to remove the triangle and add them to your first post, you should do your research first instead of asking the guy to spoon feed you the solution. Using TraingleAway is a no brainer, just simply flash an ICS ROM, run the app, press whatever is needed to be pressed (of course you need to verify that the information about, if you have a triangle or how many binary counts you have etc is correct), let it reboot and the binary counter and triangle will be gone. Of course just saying that won't guarantee the success of every people using it. There are some instances that problems occur that i haven't put in my so called "guide" for triangle away. The only way is to read the original post of TraingleAway thread.
If you want to help people by answering their query is to acquire knowledge on how to do things etc. You can't do that if you won't try to search and understand the subject first. Spoon feeding is the last thing we, as members of this developer site, should do.
Anyway, i am not here to bash you or anything. Of course i appreciate this thread because it will help people who are unaware how to safely flash their phone if they are on the famous "brickable ROM/Kernel". I am just here to remind you that no matter who we/you are, everyone needs to do their research first rather than people just giving you all the answer to everything. After all, using TriangleAway is "RISKY (well, i haven't heard anyone bricking their phone yet with it)" according to its developer hence the need to read its thread first before posting a guide to your thread. Good luck to you and your thread and hope you understand what i am talking about.
Cheers
