I recently opened my N7 to fix my screen lifting (it worked!) but came across this when I was placing the cover back on. Along the side where the power and volume buttons are, there is a 4th button, and the label reads KEY4. Now, there are no plastic legs that would push that button in, but makes me wonder what the button was possible placed there for.
Any ideas?

That's for the rear facing camera....oh wait...never mind.
From the picture, it looks like that's the volume down button.

It's not. The volume down button is KEY3.
not sure what it is but you should put some lotion on those dry skin hands.. You know you wife dont want them touching her soft skin..
maybe its a reset of some type. push it and see before you put the back on...
Not sure, but it lines up with an off-pattern dimple in the back cover. Also only 3 keys are mapped in the kernel driver:
Code:
static struct gpio_keys_button grouper_keys[] = {
[0] = GPIO_KEY(KEY_POWER, PV0, 1),
[1] = GPIO_KEY(KEY_VOLUMEUP, PQ2, 0),
[2] = GPIO_KEY(KEY_VOLUMEDOWN, PQ3, 0),
};
did you try and push it?
Says reset, but im running CM10, maybe can't reset on it?
Pressing the button while it's on yields nothing, like pokey9000 said.
The dimple in the pattern doesn't seem to do anything, and doesn't match up with the button when the back cover is attached. I'm pretty curious as to what this possibly could've been.
Here's another close up with the back cover.

You're absolutely right, Its just a little bit left over like the hole and ports for the camera. Apparently it was cheaper for Asus to just leave these little things in the mother board then completely redesign in.
Reset
Mine is completely different.
Maybe for depot-level troubleshooting? During JTAG operations?

Couldn't we repurpose this button? We would have to make a custom back for the device, but still.

Making a custom back wouldn't be a great idea because all of the antennas are located in the back.
Camera???
I just watched the XDA unboxing video for this tab. Could this mysterious 4th button be for a camera that was not installed? The guy in the video showed where a camera was evidently planned but not installed. Just my best guess.
The original me370t had a reset button right below the volume rocker. Google didn't want it. Don't believe me? Check the FCC papers

LOL WTF
If you look at the middle at the top there is an empty hole, and also something labeled con3 above that there is also a sticker with a label me370t. Maybe that button was indeed something to trigger a camera a reset button, a home button, a dim, mute, or screen lock. What ever it was intended for we won't know unless Asus decides to actually release the memo 370. If they do I wonder if we will be able to turn our nexus to memos. I wonder is they left a trace for micro SD

I know one can reprogram it, but when it isn't reprogrammed what does it do?
My backlight on the keyboard has been on before but it never seems to come on now - even whe I press the backlight button and cover the light sensor. How does it work? Any way I can have the keyboard backlight on whenever the device is open?
What is the backlight button for?
PS - I wonder what percentage of posts on this forum are done on a universal... This was.
I think the only raison-d-ètre for that button is to start discussion threads like yours. It's a bit like bureaucracy. It starts very small but then grows into a self sustaining monster.
The question is not "What is the button for?" , it is rather "Will you be able to accept that it has no purpose" ?
.. but does it have no purpose? we have a question, a response, and now a response to that response. I argue that this ingenius button is not a part of the device, but a social agent and we have created an ad-hoc community built around the presence of this otherwise purposeless plastic.
Alright a more straightforward question:
What effect does pressing the button (when not using the reassignment hack) have?
Guys, in my case when Im using XDA Exec for typing or working long and then I stopped for 60sec ......... backlight goes auto-off , by simply pressing the button backlight ON or tapping on the screen!
For keyboard light, if i put thumb on it and press any key on keyboard then backlight goes ON.
So isnt it normal and expected behavoir? if you noticed more or less could be an exception

Alright, let me rephrase my question - WHY can yo not accept that it has no purpose? Don't think too much about it, I want a spontaneous answer.
Because on a device as expensive as this I assume that everything has a purpose, considering that space is a factor.
Isn't it meant to force enable the keyboard backlight when the ambient light is too dark? Ie, light sensor detects it's dark; however, backlight times out after X seconds; pressing useless backlight key detects ambient light and renables keyboard backlight without stuffing a character in the keyboard message queue.
We all know what it's really meant for - VJCandela!

all points raised here are right. VJCandela is the best use for it, in day to day life it served no real purpose before reassignment unless you ignored your Uni until it turned the backlight on the screen off.
Typical. Looks like Starbucks paid for the buttons to be installed as some kind of post-phone-sale invenstment.

Does anyone know if there is a free application that provides an icon on the Today screen to power off the device instead of having to hold down the power off button on top next to the card slot? I have an icon on the Today screen to soft reset. One to power off would be great!

I don't see how this would benefit you because you still need to hold down the button to turn the power back on. This sounds like a hardware issue.

true...but that's what i take my battery out for
and it is a hardware issue, i just dont know where to get it fixed
Oooh, I'm sorry you have to do all this! If the device is still under warranty, the mfg. should ffix it. By the way, I found a cab file from pda gold website called "power off", installed it to my device, and made the mistake of copying the file to windows/start-up in file explorer as a shortcut. Doing this stopped my device from starting so I had to do a hard reset. Since my device would not start, the only way I could hard reset (for those who had the same problem) was to press the comm manager button, the voice record button, and sticking the stylus in the reset hole at the same time (not an easy task), release the buttons and stylus, and then press the green arrow (send) button. This sends a message telling the mfg. to set the device back to factory settings. I got this info from tech support at Cingular.

Hi
Yesterday I had a bit of accident - I've caught with my fingernail one of the hardware buttons for softkey actions and it slightly pop-up. Some photos:
http://my.opera.com/lwiczek/albums/show.dml?id=780762
the problem is it hinders sliding the keyboard back (i can push it and then slide keyboard but it's damn annoying ). I've tried to push it hard back (or something) with the hope it will "glue" itself back, but that didn't work. I don't know how the keys are attached to the rest of the phone but I'd be glad for any tips on how to fix it (preferably without taking the phone apart ).
The keys are all joined together with thin plastic between the kays. They do not contact the circuit board directly. Theres is rubber membrane layer after the keys and then another white layer with metal discs that contact the board.

It should be possible therefore to put a spot of a soft (PVA type) glue under the key and hold it down until dry, without it damaging the keyboard.
Mike
Thanks, I've pull up a bit broken key (with the whithis foil under it), put a bit of glue and it seems to be fixed (tho it doesn't click anymore and it's harder to press, but at least sliding back works now :] )
Thanks!

Probably as good as you can do. The click is made by the little metal disc moving in and out. With the little bit of glue perhaps it softens the click but so long as it works. Well done.
Mike
As it turned out I've put a bit to much glue (what is 'too much' at this amount anyhow? (; ), and key got glued to the rest of the keyboard casing and got stuck permanently. I've tried to separate it, tho with little succes. I'm looking at it from the bright sight - at least there won't be any more any accidental sending of sms, and the another key (on the main part of phone) is still working
Thanks for help eitherway!

Well as you say you can work around the problem. There are keyboards for sale on various websites so if it is a real problem it could be changed.

The 5 Contacts from the Keypad Button Flex Cable Ribbon under the Plastic-Buttons are sensitive. They holt and work very long ( if you are nice to them ), but during the time the "simple Constuction" ( it´s only a simple round Metall-Frog thats bring to Contacts together ) failed. You have to disassambling you HD2 and build i a new Keypad Button Flex Cable Ribbon...
You need this here:

}
and have to place it here inside the Middle-Chassis:
The Keypad Button Flex Cable Ribbon is -praise the lord- very cheap (5-7 Euro) but sits deep inside you HD2, so it´s a lot of work for minimum 30-60 Minutes...
Best Regards,
Micha
I have following problem with buttons "back" and "home" (order 3rd and 4th from left to right) which are on the same hardware key: if I use "back" button it works but in addition it locks me the touch screen too. The same for the button "home". I have to press on/off button in order to go in standby and come back for unlocking the screen.
Now I use WP7 HD2O 1.26 but I tried also other different roms of WP. The problem persists in all cases.
I've been to HTC service for asking if they can replace "Keypad Button Flex Cable Ribbon" and they told me that they can't replace only that because the standard procedure is to replace all Flex Cable + Touch Screen. Because I'm out of guaranty I should pay about 200Euros!!. They can't even supply me only the flex cable.
I would really appreciate if you can help me with answers to these:
1. Is "my case" the same problem related to the "Keypad Button Flex Cable Ribbon"?
2. If yes, there are other solutions to order this part and then to replace it?
3. There are other solutions?
Thank you.
I'm very annoyed.
While using stylus I have to switch to fingers to use function buttons
Home button has no light and its basically a blind expeidition to find it
Did no one play with it before selling it?
You bought it without proper research it seems...
I can't share your feelings though, I've never been more satisfied with a mobile phone (and had quite a few of them since '97...)

You can do a stylus gesture to activate the menu button - an up arrow like this /\
and to activate the back button a back arrow like this <
I don't have a problem finding the home button as it is slightly raised. Even in the dark, it is easy to find. In fact, that's how I waked up my phone and have no problems in the dark. I might just take you a week or so to get used to where the home button is, and you'll literally be able to push it with you eyes closed.
You cant exactly research these tiny nuances.
True about the gestures but then again, finding the pen button is another challenge.
When you insert the pen the phone knows so theres a wacom sensor in there. Why cant they put more under the buttons? Its just so strange like they said f it we are done.
And the home button is just as strange, they worked on the lighted capacitive back and menu but they said f it and stuck in the home button.
And last thing, the keyboard sucks. Swift is kinda cool but swiping is completely bad, nothing like real swype. Im going to try install the beta but too bad it wont support one sided operation.

Dumbest post I've read all week. If you can't find the S-pen button quickly and without looking, then you need to have your motor skills tested. Also, the home button is raised and directly in the middle. Get a marker and draw a map on your screen.

I don't see how you find it so difficult. I'm sure a blind person could fine it quite easily.
