What is the backlight button actually for? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I know one can reprogram it, but when it isn't reprogrammed what does it do?
My backlight on the keyboard has been on before but it never seems to come on now - even whe I press the backlight button and cover the light sensor. How does it work? Any way I can have the keyboard backlight on whenever the device is open?
What is the backlight button for?
PS - I wonder what percentage of posts on this forum are done on a universal... This was.

I think the only raison-d-ètre for that button is to start discussion threads like yours. It's a bit like bureaucracy. It starts very small but then grows into a self sustaining monster.
The question is not "What is the button for?" , it is rather "Will you be able to accept that it has no purpose" ?

.. but does it have no purpose? we have a question, a response, and now a response to that response. I argue that this ingenius button is not a part of the device, but a social agent and we have created an ad-hoc community built around the presence of this otherwise purposeless plastic.

Alright a more straightforward question:
What effect does pressing the button (when not using the reassignment hack) have?

Guys, in my case when Im using XDA Exec for typing or working long and then I stopped for 60sec ......... backlight goes auto-off , by simply pressing the button backlight ON or tapping on the screen!
For keyboard light, if i put thumb on it and press any key on keyboard then backlight goes ON.
So isnt it normal and expected behavoir? if you noticed more or less could be an exception

Alright, let me rephrase my question - WHY can yo not accept that it has no purpose? Don't think too much about it, I want a spontaneous answer.

Because on a device as expensive as this I assume that everything has a purpose, considering that space is a factor.

Isn't it meant to force enable the keyboard backlight when the ambient light is too dark? Ie, light sensor detects it's dark; however, backlight times out after X seconds; pressing useless backlight key detects ambient light and renables keyboard backlight without stuffing a character in the keyboard message queue.

If we're headed to Starbucks, could someone grab me a quad-shot venti white mocha with cream, and sprinkle some cinnamon over it please?
Damn I need a coffee!
all points raised here are right. VJCandela is the best use for it, in day to day life it served no real purpose before reassignment unless you ignored your Uni until it turned the backlight on the screen off.

Typical. Looks like Starbucks paid for the buttons to be installed as some kind of post-phone-sale invenstment.

Turning off LED's altogether??

I found a hack in the forum to stop the flashing LED's (for keeping the device in the bedroom at night) but I can't find one to stop the charging LED (the steady amber then green when fully charged).
I would like to stop the charging LED as well if someone could point me in the right direction.
Many thanks,
Joe
VJEschaton will control one led, I don't know which.
To disable all leds - you can disable the allledmgr.dll driver in your registry (I think).
That's some risky stuff, so it pays to know what you're doing.
I will be developing more refined control of the leds in VJEschaton in the future.
V
Thanks for the prompt reply.
Risky is my middle name, and as I am only using my Universal as a fancy digital clock radio, then if it goes tit's up I won't lose anything vital
I'll try it now and report back.
While you are here though, did you come across my other post regarding how you can turn off the device after a certain period (sleep timer style).
I am only asking as if anyone knows, then it's likely to be you
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41118&highlight=
Apologies, I thought I'd already blurted out my thoughts on the sleep timer:
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/nsuspend.shtml
I'm hopefully going to write my own generic scheduling app at some point in the future.
You could probably also use this app with VJEschaton (I think - does VJEschaton shut down? Can't remember. Anyway, VJKeypress will):

Vijay, while playing with the LEDs, could you try to make the phone LED on all the time when there's a notification? not only blinking amber. Don't you catch yourself standing for few seconds and staring at lying somewhere Universal just to check what's the colour of the LED? It would be much easier if it would stay on all the time.
I'll look into it Rottie. Frankly I just want to be able to control the blue so I can freak Mrs Vijay555 out with a Close Encounters of the Third Kind, flashlight, orange, blue, red, green:

However, your idea unfortunately has practical uses
I've not done any work yet, but it's on my very very long list...

There's a display off in VJEschaton, but not standby or off (unless display off means whole thing off).
The dll hack is fine; this is the one I found on a previous search.
nsuspend works a treat; I am going to see if I can reg hack or hex edit the program to default to an hour, but that's OT to this thread. Many thanks Vijay - I have been waking up at 3 am with radio in my ear from my pillow speaker and have had to turn it off, but no more WooHoo!!
The LED's for the charger are therefore not controlled by alledmgr, so I guess thoughts must turn to the charging/power end of the device.
Joe
****EDIT**** I am not entirely sure what's going on, as a few hours ago I did see the orange charge light, and since then I have no lights at all. Perhaps VJEschaton's LED switch did the job! I will continue to observe...

Shift screen brightness 'Auto' setting - yours work?

As per the title, does the screen brightness 'Auto' setting and the light sensor actually do anything? Seems to make no difference on mine....

Hi,
yes it did, but I switched it off, cause it was too nervous. Brightness changed all the time when lonely clouds were passing, or the the cloudy thumb cast a shadow.
S.
Yes it works!:
Use Shagctrl to lower brightness and then switch it on. The brightness level you chose will be the minimum level.
If you cover the sensor in the top right-hand corner, the screen will dimm. When you aim you flashlight on it, it will brighten.
(at least... mine does...)
However, I don't use it, because my hand will frequently get in the way when I use the touchscreen and then my screen brightens suddenly... Verry anoying.

Hi,
this is a different question, but I didn't want to open another thread.
Who can confirm this?
Vista is running in the "background". Your are in WM, but have shut-down WM. So dark screen. But then exactly when Vista goes into standby (green light starts to blink) the WM screen comes to live.
Is that strange? Or just always the case?
Thanks!
S.

Hi Pantaloonie,
this looks like capital punishment for me, so sorry! Next question from several feet under.
Let me explain:
I am rather a newbie using forums like this, means the does and do nots are not always clear. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!
My thoughts were 1. the point was answered and 2. there are so many items on the site that it is not necessary to always start a new thread for every minor problem.
Wrong thinking?
Please, I really do not know, can you clarify? Do you really start a new thread for everything?
Thanks!
S.
Heh, I was just having a bit of fun, you did nothing wrong. Some forums can be very strict about keeping threads on topic, but we are pretty relaxed here.
The advantage of starting a new thread is that more people will see it, you're more likely to get an answer.

[REQ]Virtual Hardware G buttons

I was thinking about, as the subject, to an app who allow to map the g-sensor as an hardware button.
In some games, for example, where you can assign an action to a button, would great to incline the diamond and assign the action you need (L,R, Up & Down)
I don't know about how work has to be done, but imagine isn't too easy.
the problem is that the Diamond only has one button for personalize: large press in call botton
but other option is use a sensible area of screen how the squares touch pad in notebooks
It would just be a matter of a background process watching the G-Sensor and sending keystrokes via the keybd_event function to the foreground window/focused control. Good idea, and would be pretty easy, but I'm too busy.
I hardly doubt, that you can play with such controller
Like, stressing phone, and screaming at it, as you cannot progress the game
The most suitable is the semi-transparent on-screen controller, like in NES emulator
But withvirtual pad you can't push "Up+A" (per exemple) because WM dont accept "Dual Touch"
Sorry 4 my English...
I think that the game is playable... just find a GOOD algorithm to balance the sensitivity (not too inclined for a direction) and the directions (up, up-right, right, etc)
This is the usually iphone example
BTW think how many game with the emulators and, why not, at the "never seen touchxperience rom"... sending keystrokes (up, down, left, right) in the today screen, album.... to the ACTIVE WINDOW

Ok I have began writing this application like an hour ago.
I will keep you updated as soon as I have something usable. (the program works already, but I have to create some windows so you can configure it)

Awesome, can't wait to try this out, thanks for taking this on.
WoW Great NEWS! but all those g-sens related apps can goes in conflict... make in mind to consider a function that auto-rotate the screen (and also the G-gestures)... two control panels like the "Brins0net ScreenRotator" to exclude the rotation of the screen & G-gestures, and the possibility to add windows in execution would be GREAT
...maybe now i'm asking too much BTW it will be THE ONLY NECESSARY G-app in background, for all diamond users.
(hemm should be considered also a screen lock, but is not too necessary)

I'm still working on about all those things...
Now is cup of coffee time
I will first of all end up the "VueFlo"-side of the app and make a first release, then I'll see for other functions like AutoRotation and the interaction between that and "VueFlo".
Just wait a little, I'm almost done with first release

REQUEST: Power off backlight to 0% on WM6.x?

Hi!
If someone could deal with this:
I am looking for tweak or application which turns off backlight - not just dim the display to lower level after some time.
I want to completely turn off backlight to 0% and when the screen is tapped the backlight is on again.
Any solution for this?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
please ask questions in the Questions & Answers section of the forum.
thanks

Yup, this problem annoys me aswell.
This is a major design-improvement mistake in wm6, and all wm6 devices suffer from it. The OLD wm5 backlight behaviour was way better.
This new behaviour actualy make the native windows Device lock function unusable. Also, wm is much more stable if you never suspend it, and battery performance is almost the same.
I even searched for a wm5 downgrade rom for my eten m800 (wm5 does not have the dimming "feature"), but without success.
I still hope someone will manage to get a fix for this to function like in the wm5 days (my mio a701 was able to do it easely).
I would very much love something like this too. That the power button would just switch off the backlight instead of powering off the device. I've tried to search but all I've found is something that would turn the screen off but you'll still need to press the power button to turn it back on and not tapping on the screen.

Try ScreenOff
http:
//www.appliedpda.com/downloads/list/for_free
I use that to turn the screen off without turning off the connection when listening to music. I just tap the power button to make it come back on.
They also have ScreenOn to make the screen come on. But why not just use the power button?

thnx, i know screen off, but we want to get rid of using power button.
Al we need is some patch that disable wm6.x backlight dimming instead of turning off.
thnx,
and if you still consider that this topic is in the wrong section we will start a new one in Q&A, or maybe some moderator will move it if it is posible.

Did you see the "ScreenOn" program they have? I haven't tried it. But perhaps the screen could be turned off via ScreenOff. The turned on with ScreenOn by mapping it to tapping on the screen (ftouchsl...)

Very annoyed at stylus home menu back

I'm very annoyed.
While using stylus I have to switch to fingers to use function buttons
Home button has no light and its basically a blind expeidition to find it
Did no one play with it before selling it?
You bought it without proper research it seems...
I can't share your feelings though, I've never been more satisfied with a mobile phone (and had quite a few of them since '97...)
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
You can do a stylus gesture to activate the menu button - an up arrow like this /\
and to activate the back button a back arrow like this <
I don't have a problem finding the home button as it is slightly raised. Even in the dark, it is easy to find. In fact, that's how I waked up my phone and have no problems in the dark. I might just take you a week or so to get used to where the home button is, and you'll literally be able to push it with you eyes closed.
You cant exactly research these tiny nuances.
True about the gestures but then again, finding the pen button is another challenge.
When you insert the pen the phone knows so theres a wacom sensor in there. Why cant they put more under the buttons? Its just so strange like they said f it we are done.
And the home button is just as strange, they worked on the lighted capacitive back and menu but they said f it and stuck in the home button.
And last thing, the keyboard sucks. Swift is kinda cool but swiping is completely bad, nothing like real swype. Im going to try install the beta but too bad it wont support one sided operation.

Dumbest post I've read all week. If you can't find the S-pen button quickly and without looking, then you need to have your motor skills tested. Also, the home button is raised and directly in the middle. Get a marker and draw a map on your screen.

It's below the bottom of the screen (in the middle) and it is raised.
I don't see how you find it so difficult. I'm sure a blind person could fine it quite easily.
