REQUEST: Power off backlight to 0% on WM6.x? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi!
If someone could deal with this:
I am looking for tweak or application which turns off backlight - not just dim the display to lower level after some time.
I want to completely turn off backlight to 0% and when the screen is tapped the backlight is on again.
Any solution for this?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards

please ask questions in the Questions & Answers section of the forum.
thanks

Yup, this problem annoys me aswell.
This is a major design-improvement mistake in wm6, and all wm6 devices suffer from it. The OLD wm5 backlight behaviour was way better.
This new behaviour actualy make the native windows Device lock function unusable. Also, wm is much more stable if you never suspend it, and battery performance is almost the same.
I even searched for a wm5 downgrade rom for my eten m800 (wm5 does not have the dimming "feature"), but without success.
I still hope someone will manage to get a fix for this to function like in the wm5 days (my mio a701 was able to do it easely).

I would very much love something like this too. That the power button would just switch off the backlight instead of powering off the device. I've tried to search but all I've found is something that would turn the screen off but you'll still need to press the power button to turn it back on and not tapping on the screen.

Try ScreenOff
http:
//www.appliedpda.com/downloads/list/for_free
I use that to turn the screen off without turning off the connection when listening to music. I just tap the power button to make it come back on.
They also have ScreenOn to make the screen come on. But why not just use the power button?

Thank you for your sugestions of posting to Q&A forum, but this is not a question, this is a developement request. It is not posible actualy to do this with available apps, we tried them all.

thnx, i know screen off, but we want to get rid of using power button.
Al we need is some patch that disable wm6.x backlight dimming instead of turning off.
thnx,
and if you still consider that this topic is in the wrong section we will start a new one in Q&A, or maybe some moderator will move it if it is posible.

Did you see the "ScreenOn" program they have? I haven't tried it. But perhaps the screen could be turned off via ScreenOff. The turned on with ScreenOn by mapping it to tapping on the screen (ftouchsl...)

What is the backlight button actually for?

I know one can reprogram it, but when it isn't reprogrammed what does it do?
My backlight on the keyboard has been on before but it never seems to come on now - even whe I press the backlight button and cover the light sensor. How does it work? Any way I can have the keyboard backlight on whenever the device is open?
What is the backlight button for?
PS - I wonder what percentage of posts on this forum are done on a universal... This was.
I think the only raison-d-ètre for that button is to start discussion threads like yours. It's a bit like bureaucracy. It starts very small but then grows into a self sustaining monster.
The question is not "What is the button for?" , it is rather "Will you be able to accept that it has no purpose" ?
.. but does it have no purpose? we have a question, a response, and now a response to that response. I argue that this ingenius button is not a part of the device, but a social agent and we have created an ad-hoc community built around the presence of this otherwise purposeless plastic.
Alright a more straightforward question:
What effect does pressing the button (when not using the reassignment hack) have?
Guys, in my case when Im using XDA Exec for typing or working long and then I stopped for 60sec ......... backlight goes auto-off , by simply pressing the button backlight ON or tapping on the screen!
For keyboard light, if i put thumb on it and press any key on keyboard then backlight goes ON.
So isnt it normal and expected behavoir? if you noticed more or less could be an exception

Alright, let me rephrase my question - WHY can yo not accept that it has no purpose? Don't think too much about it, I want a spontaneous answer.
Because on a device as expensive as this I assume that everything has a purpose, considering that space is a factor.
Isn't it meant to force enable the keyboard backlight when the ambient light is too dark? Ie, light sensor detects it's dark; however, backlight times out after X seconds; pressing useless backlight key detects ambient light and renables keyboard backlight without stuffing a character in the keyboard message queue.

Damn I need a coffee!
all points raised here are right. VJCandela is the best use for it, in day to day life it served no real purpose before reassignment unless you ignored your Uni until it turned the backlight on the screen off.
Typical. Looks like Starbucks paid for the buttons to be installed as some kind of post-phone-sale invenstment.

Disable Auto Rotate?

I have tried searching for this but not been able to find anything, so sorry if it is already covered elsewhere.
Does anyone know how to disable the auto rotation of the screen that happens when you go from laptop to tablet mode?
Thanks in advance
Sam
It has been asked before, and I know how to do it, but I have to get a little time to write the app. It's quite an easy app to write, just time is unavailable to me I need a time turner.

I would have thought with your 1337 5k1llz you would have at the very least had your own TARDIS lol
Nice to see Pratchett references popping up all over the place =)
I thought I saw something here about an app that was already created, except that it made the Universal totally ignore any lid motion, so closing the lid would not put it to sleep. I can't remember what thread I saw it in... I thought it was Vijay who did it, too. Hmm.
do you really have to go through all the trouble to write a program for it or is there a simple reg hack to take care of this?
There's a little of both. It's a driver hack, but combined with some registry.
I wrote the other program also, can't remember what it was called now, for maintaining control and enabling the Universal's external keys, but it had a limited release of 1 guy trying it.
Then I got distracted for 6 months, having a baby

Any update on this? I would like the auto rotate to still rotate but into landscape mode the other way up, as opposed to portrait mode, if you see what I mean
Disable auto-rotate
Hi Vijay555,
Any luck finding the program?
Would really appreciate it mate.
just in install vijaylumix 2. click on enable extra brightness than switch power off. After that autobrightness will be disabled and screen orientation will not go automatically works just fine hehe

The camera does not work once vijaylumix 2 is started :-(
So back to the drawing board.
Actually isn't there a program that sets selected programs to start in either landscape or potrait view?
Try re-launching VJLumos I/II/III to disable.
vijaylumix? Dude, what kinda weird sounding pseudo-romantic idiom is that?
VJUzumaki has been re-written. The nega/positive side effect of VJLumos is unexpected but useful. But VJUzumaki will disable rotation and provide a whole shebang loud of new features.. coming soon.

umm, if I recal you can remove the magnet from inside the casing, that makes the screen auto rotate
I'm working on bells and whistles (ie features!) for VJUzumaki, so hopefully shortly into the new year.

what is the status of VJUzumaki, or has there been an alternate fix found for this problem?

Clock & missed calls when backlight off?

Hi,
Is it possible to have the time and missed calls/messages information when the backlight is off with Xperia? I mean just like it is on usual mobile phones like SE W850i or the others..
Otherwise, it's a bit of a burden to switch on/off the backlight just to check if I have missed calls instead of taking a second of glance to the screen..

I guess the best way would be to set the LED's to flash until noticed.. Then you will know if you have an sms or missed call.

thanks for the advice.
but is there anyone who could kindly answer the question I asked?
Dont think so - from what I understood, when you press upper button then WM61 goes to some kind of sleep mode, leaving only basic functions like mobile and some others running, saving as much power as possible. Including disabled display. If you want to see something on screen, then you have to keep it turned on, which equals increased power consumption.
I haven't got the manual to hand but surely it there is a section on power-saving/backlight settings?!?
Go to settings>system>power>advanced>On Battery Power and untick turn off device is not used for...
Beware that the screen is one of the major battery drains...

Then you are out of luck. The x1 does not do this.
Unless someone knows of/writes an app to do this.
As was said above, the best other option would be to set the 4 corner LEDs to flash indefinately till you notice them.
Or, buy a different phone.
Sadly the industry is not giving out the right info with Winmo "phones".
They are a PDA first, with a phone fitted in as a second thought. Not the other way around. So, they still lack many base features from "simpler" phones.

I'm not sure what you're looking for here -
1) Keeping the screen on but the backlight off, so that you can glance at the screen and see the time/your notifications - per your first post
2) Having a quickview screen with a big clock and your notifications, when your phone is on standby, per the post I have quoted.
3) both
I've already given you an answer for 1). For 2) have you tried using S2U2?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=412418
it's both I am looking for. but as was put forward before, it looks it is not possible at the moment.
the pdas unfortunately miss some simple phone features; it will take some time to get used to it...
The answer is very easy:
If you have only one display as a PPC has, you need the backlight on to see something.
It is no problem to create the information you want with 3rd party software as WAD2 or PhoneAlarm. But then you have to keep the backlight on and this takes a lot of power.
Easier it is if you only want the screen turning on if a new sms/email/mms/appointment or other thing ist coming. If you use PhoneAlarm for example, you can give the settings to turn on the screen at this alarms. Then the screen turns on, if an alarm arrives (for a new SMS/MMS/EMail or Appointment or whatever) and you can see it. This needs power too.
With this you cannot see the time during 24 h...
What I do is to tell PhoneAlarm to give a sound for a new SMS/Email/MMS but not to turn on the screen. Then I know, when I want to turn the screen on and can see what happend.
And if I want to see the time I just turn on the screen for a short look. At the screenie you see one of the pages with WAD2 and PhoneAlarm in the top, I made for my daily use...

[Req] Diamond type keylock

Hi Guys,
I've spent a good while searching this and other xda forums but whereas there are similar requests none are as basic as mine.
On my Diamond, under Settings, was an app called Key Lock. This had 3 simple options, one of which was; "When Device is Off: Lock all buttons except Power Buttton".
Like others I am forever turning my phone on by mistake because of the volume buttons.
Can someone port this to HD? IS there a cab?
I know that you can Lock the HD but this makes turning it back on a bit of a pain.
Likewise I'd prefer not to have to use S2U2 or AEBPlus.
Just wondered if anyone had managed to recreate the Diamond functionality of disabling all keys when the screen was switched off?
Thanks for any help guys.

Not sure about cab you requested but have you tried using LockMeLite V1.3?
Cheers FS,
It's not quite what I was after but the best compromise I've found yet.
I use a media player all the time and I can see even LockMeLite becoming a pain after a while...
I just think it must be possible to simply disable the volume keys on the HD whilst the screen is off, as the Diamond uses virtually the same hardware and OS.
It might be something as simple as a reg key...
Thanks again.
Try using AE Button Plus and assign the volume up/down to a double-press instead. I doubt you'll press them twice in quick succession accidentally.
Thanks guys for your help.
Finally found the file I was after in another post:

Slightly confused what affect this has on the HD since the 4 buttons down bottom are always off unless the phone is on. So if the phone is in standby (screen off) they don't do anything already. Or is this for the volume keys?

This must vary from ROM to ROM - because NRG's Phoenix 2 from Dec 25 does not come out of sby when the volume keys are pressed. I assume you're using a stock ROM - I can't remember what Stock 6.1 does, it was so long ago. ;p

Hard buttons backlight not turning off !!

hey guys ...
I GUESS NO ONE IS INTERESTED IN HELPING ME OUT ,
I ASKED THIS BEFORE,MANY TIMES,MANY THREADS, BUT NO RESPONSE SO FAR....
THE ISSUE IS ----------->>>
i am really stuck wid this problem , i am using the BOYPPC-GINGERBREAD-GOEX-V2 version currently
and i cant turn off the hardware button backlight completely off , neither by cyanogen mod settings nor by using any app .
earlier i used to use this app called ( ** adjbrightness**) to turn off the button backlight but it is not working in this rom.
IS THERE ANY SOLUTION OR ANY OTHER TWEAK /TRICK TO COMPLETELY TURN OF THE BUTTON BACKLIGHT IN THIS BUILD ???
GUYS PLEEEEEEEZ HELP ME WITH THIS.....I REALLY WANNA TURN THEM OFF !!!
why don't you post in that build's thread. I'm sure users who had that problem would tell you how they solved it. and if it can't be solved, the Dev might fix it in the next release
Can't find that Rom?

or any clue what could be the problem ??
Why is it so important for you to turn them off?
Please keep in mind, that our beloved hd2 originally doesn't run android and so the hardware also doesn't play nice with all software.
I think the button backlight is controlled by the liblights.so. As far as I know there are three different versions of them, one with working notifications and limited auto backlight, one with fully working auto backlight and NOT working notifications and one with working auto backlight and limited working notifications.
...already used them all, but can't remember, that controlling the button backlight was working in one version.
So guess it's a kernel related issue.
So you could try builds with different kernels: tytungs kernel is the most spreaded one, and I mean here it's not working, so try gpcs, rafingas, mdjs, bauner(?)...maybe youve got luck.
Maybe you can also contact tytung and ask if its a kernel issue.
