I found a hack in the forum to stop the flashing LED's (for keeping the device in the bedroom at night) but I can't find one to stop the charging LED (the steady amber then green when fully charged).
I would like to stop the charging LED as well if someone could point me in the right direction.
Many thanks,
Joe
VJEschaton will control one led, I don't know which.
To disable all leds - you can disable the allledmgr.dll driver in your registry (I think).
That's some risky stuff, so it pays to know what you're doing.
I will be developing more refined control of the leds in VJEschaton in the future.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
Risky is my middle name, and as I am only using my Universal as a fancy digital clock radio, then if it goes tit's up I won't lose anything vital
I'll try it now and report back.
While you are here though, did you come across my other post regarding how you can turn off the device after a certain period (sleep timer style).
I am only asking as if anyone knows, then it's likely to be you

Apologies, I thought I'd already blurted out my thoughts on the sleep timer:

I'm hopefully going to write my own generic scheduling app at some point in the future.
You could probably also use this app with VJEschaton (I think - does VJEschaton shut down? Can't remember. Anyway, VJKeypress will):

Vijay, while playing with the LEDs, could you try to make the phone LED on all the time when there's a notification? not only blinking amber. Don't you catch yourself standing for few seconds and staring at lying somewhere Universal just to check what's the colour of the LED? It would be much easier if it would stay on all the time.
I'll look into it Rottie. Frankly I just want to be able to control the blue so I can freak Mrs Vijay555 out with a Close Encounters of the Third Kind, flashlight, orange, blue, red, green:

I've not done any work yet, but it's on my very very long list...

There's a display off in VJEschaton, but not standby or off (unless display off means whole thing off).
The dll hack is fine; this is the one I found on a previous search.
nsuspend works a treat; I am going to see if I can reg hack or hex edit the program to default to an hour, but that's OT to this thread. Many thanks Vijay - I have been waking up at 3 am with radio in my ear from my pillow speaker and have had to turn it off, but no more WooHoo!!
The LED's for the charger are therefore not controlled by alledmgr, so I guess thoughts must turn to the charging/power end of the device.
Joe
****EDIT**** I am not entirely sure what's going on, as a few hours ago I did see the orange charge light, and since then I have no lights at all. Perhaps VJEschaton's LED switch did the job! I will continue to observe...

I know one can reprogram it, but when it isn't reprogrammed what does it do?
My backlight on the keyboard has been on before but it never seems to come on now - even whe I press the backlight button and cover the light sensor. How does it work? Any way I can have the keyboard backlight on whenever the device is open?
What is the backlight button for?
PS - I wonder what percentage of posts on this forum are done on a universal... This was.
I think the only raison-d-ètre for that button is to start discussion threads like yours. It's a bit like bureaucracy. It starts very small but then grows into a self sustaining monster.
The question is not "What is the button for?" , it is rather "Will you be able to accept that it has no purpose" ?
.. but does it have no purpose? we have a question, a response, and now a response to that response. I argue that this ingenius button is not a part of the device, but a social agent and we have created an ad-hoc community built around the presence of this otherwise purposeless plastic.
Alright a more straightforward question:
What effect does pressing the button (when not using the reassignment hack) have?
Guys, in my case when Im using XDA Exec for typing or working long and then I stopped for 60sec ......... backlight goes auto-off , by simply pressing the button backlight ON or tapping on the screen!
For keyboard light, if i put thumb on it and press any key on keyboard then backlight goes ON.
So isnt it normal and expected behavoir? if you noticed more or less could be an exception

Alright, let me rephrase my question - WHY can yo not accept that it has no purpose? Don't think too much about it, I want a spontaneous answer.
Because on a device as expensive as this I assume that everything has a purpose, considering that space is a factor.
Isn't it meant to force enable the keyboard backlight when the ambient light is too dark? Ie, light sensor detects it's dark; however, backlight times out after X seconds; pressing useless backlight key detects ambient light and renables keyboard backlight without stuffing a character in the keyboard message queue.
We all know what it's really meant for - VJCandela!
Guys, it's getting a bit tense in here. Let's all go out for a latte, eh?

Damn I need a coffee!
all points raised here are right. VJCandela is the best use for it, in day to day life it served no real purpose before reassignment unless you ignored your Uni until it turned the backlight on the screen off.
Typical. Looks like Starbucks paid for the buttons to be installed as some kind of post-phone-sale invenstment.

Hello all,
I opened the Magician to repair the phone speaker, but also painting the housing. As I carefully document the parts I found one piece of hardware that draw my attention. I have a clue what it might be, but would like to share it, so maybe you know what it might be.
First some pictures

Location of the unknown hardware. When you hold your magician face up (screen up) it's under the red phone button.
piece we're talking about.
Where the 2 contact point on the unknown hardware connect to. Just like the phone speaker it kind of floats, so no wires..
As I watched carefully I noticed the shape of a half cylinder. By moving your PDA vertically/horizontally the heavy side moves towards where gravity is, meaning it always points down. (see picture 2)
I think it's some kind of hardware that suppose to, if a software supports it, turn your PDA display horizontal or vertical when you turn it. Something like iPhone demonstrated or even closer Wizard. Wizard's screen automatically goes in horizontal mode when the keypad is sliced out.
If this unknown hardware is what I think it is, why isn't used then? It would be a very nice feature
What do you think it is?
its your vibration motor.
ie: when you have 'vibrate' enabled, and your phone rings, that little motor spins like crazy and the uneven shape of the weight creats the vibration.
Yes, Definately that is the vibration motor.
Yeah... I forget Magician was a phone too... Since I don't use the phone I lost focus
Anyway... It would be great if it could have the ability to turn the screen auto. My guess would be that if that small motor could send it's position back to a chip it should be possible for software (OS for example) to act. (dual function)
I'm trying to fix my vibrator and your pics would help but the links no longer work.
Can you please relink or rehost them or send them to me?
As per the title, does the screen brightness 'Auto' setting and the light sensor actually do anything? Seems to make no difference on mine....

Hi,
yes it did, but I switched it off, cause it was too nervous. Brightness changed all the time when lonely clouds were passing, or the the cloudy thumb cast a shadow.
S.
Yes it works!:
Use Shagctrl to lower brightness and then switch it on. The brightness level you chose will be the minimum level.
If you cover the sensor in the top right-hand corner, the screen will dimm. When you aim you flashlight on it, it will brighten.
(at least... mine does...)
However, I don't use it, because my hand will frequently get in the way when I use the touchscreen and then my screen brightens suddenly... Verry anoying.

Hi,
this is a different question, but I didn't want to open another thread.
Who can confirm this?
Vista is running in the "background". Your are in WM, but have shut-down WM. So dark screen. But then exactly when Vista goes into standby (green light starts to blink) the WM screen comes to live.
Is that strange? Or just always the case?
Thanks!
S.

Hi Pantaloonie,
this looks like capital punishment for me, so sorry! Next question from several feet under.
Let me explain:
I am rather a newbie using forums like this, means the does and do nots are not always clear. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!
My thoughts were 1. the point was answered and 2. there are so many items on the site that it is not necessary to always start a new thread for every minor problem.
Wrong thinking?
Please, I really do not know, can you clarify? Do you really start a new thread for everything?
Thanks!
S.
Heh, I was just having a bit of fun, you did nothing wrong. Some forums can be very strict about keeping threads on topic, but we are pretty relaxed here.
The advantage of starting a new thread is that more people will see it, you're more likely to get an answer.
I just noticed my two LEDs on my phone buttons (the green one for "call" and red for "hang up") aren't lighting up anymore. They were working perfectly, the least I can think of the cause was either c_shekar's ROM that I newly installed, or some other software.
That said, does anyone know of a software that can test LED lights by making them blink or light up?
Thanks.

After reading your post I noticed that my call and hang up lights are also not working, and this is also after I installed c_shekar's latest WM 6.1 ROM.
I wonder if there is some registry setting to rectify this?
Anyone have any ideas
Check the following, this should help you. I had the same problem as noted above, but one of the great guys on the site came to my aid.
It should b ok, anyways i have attached CamRecSvs for u here from master C_Shekhar!

Although I have to say I found that (CamRevSbs) shortly after I made this thread, I still owe you thanks. Thanks.
So this trackball LED is supposed to be able to show 3 different colors, right? So far mine only blinks white. What makes it turn other colors?
if its connected to bluetooth headsets or handsfree it will be blue.
That sounds kinda boring ._.
I heard it has an RGB led under there similar to how the G1 had the RBG next to the speaker.

Yeah, I was really hoping that different apps could set it to different colors like the G1 can. I used to have one color for IMs, one for texts, etc. I forget how I set that up but I don't see any options for it now. But I'm sure I remember seeing apps where it asked you what color you wanted the LED to be. I think AK Notepad has that option...
Im agitated by this feature missing.
Handcent ,Missed reminder do not activate these LEDs.
Very dissapointed.
I was assuming the same thing, I loved that feature on the G1. It helped me know what I got, before having to view it myself. Even the Sidekick LX has more colors than the N1, that is, if it only has 3 o_o the option is completely removed it seems? How disappointing..
On the G1, we used Missed Call to set colors.
give it some time the phone has only been out for 2 days
Has anyone confirmed that this is NOT a multicolor capable LED under the trackball?
My guess is that there aren't any apps, yet, to address this capability on the N1, yet. I, too, would be disappointed to lose my colors and the missed call app.

Short version:
Flashing White: Incoming call
Flashing Blue: Incoming call while a bluetooth headset is attached
Pulsing White: new notification

I was thinking this exact same thought, I figured since the mlevin said it was capable of going only 3 colors, I assumed it could do that. I once also thought that the LED on the G1 could only go; Red, Green, and Orange, but that has also changed.
EDIT: So there is also a "status light" embedded at the top of the device, hidden behind the black tracing around the screen? Why has this not been mentioned anywhere o_0
