Does anyone know if there is a free application that provides an icon on the Today screen to power off the device instead of having to hold down the power off button on top next to the card slot? I have an icon on the Today screen to soft reset. One to power off would be great!

It is built into Faria's ROMs if you are using them (the little green thing in the icon bar).

I have a Cingular 8125
I use psShutXP.
Dunno if it's free or not though.
It can put a little icon in the tray and then when you click it:

I don't see how this would benefit you because you still need to hold down the button to turn the power back on. This sounds like a hardware issue.
cool application....

true...but that's what i take my battery out for

Oooh, I'm sorry you have to do all this! If the device is still under warranty, the mfg. should ffix it. By the way, I found a cab file from pda gold website called "power off", installed it to my device, and made the mistake of copying the file to windows/start-up in file explorer as a shortcut. Doing this stopped my device from starting so I had to do a hard reset. Since my device would not start, the only way I could hard reset (for those who had the same problem) was to press the comm manager button, the voice record button, and sticking the stylus in the reset hole at the same time (not an easy task), release the buttons and stylus, and then press the green arrow (send) button. This sends a message telling the mfg. to set the device back to factory settings. I got this info from tech support at Cingular.

I found psShutXP @ PDA GOLD.COM..but mine says SHUT DOWN instead of TURN OFF. My screen just turns black & I can still see everything thru the dark screen. I want something to completely turn the device off. Yes this is free software.

Guys - another quick hack.
Still in beta subject to your reports.
All it does is shows the today screen for as long as you hold down the button it is assigned to.
So, install the cab; assign it to a hardware button in the control panel.
Press and hold that button and today screen should pop up (you'll see a little icon in the top left). Let go, and you should go back to where you were. Theory being, say you're in a call but want to look at your Today quickly. Pop in, pop out.
If you want to stay in the Today screen, just click on the little icon in the top left.

The cab will install two versions, normal and TodayButtonOFF.
TodayButtonOFF will cause the PocketPC to switch itself immediately off when you've finished looking at the today screen. This is so that you can assign a hardware key and use it to switch on the PPC, look at today screen, and immediately switch off when you're finished.
This version is still slightly flaky, but try it and see if it works.
Please report how it goes.
Do not launch it directly by stylus click in programs menu. If you do, it'll go to the Today screen but you'll lose your hardware buttons for 45 seconds, at which point it will reset the buttons. You can launch it by the action button as normal (hold it down).
I'm not sure how this works with program redefiners like buttonmax etc. Please report!

anyone tried this yet?
V
First of all, its a great tool!!!
The bad side -
I'm using AE Button plus. This enables, single-double-triple clicks for each button (rather its configurable). When I have this running in the background, it doesnt work...otherwise, it works great.
Besides, I dont think i can ever live without AEBP, as i've pretty much mapped everything to something or the other!!
Fix this, and i'm sure i'd be using it, its extremely handy!!!
Also, great work....i'm using the VJDialer and VJSms, and its an amazing little app!!!!
Best,
San
dreamtheater39 - thanks for the tip and feedback
I didn't think it would work with AE Button - I used to use it but have stopped using it recently (I might be writing my own version :wink
I think this tool is useful, but I think most of us use something like ButtonMax or AEButton, so it's a shame it doesn't work right now - I'll work on it!
Have you tried the poweroff version? That's quite a useful tool - use it to switch on the PPC, look at Today, and switch off again.
V
I did try the TodayToggleOFF as well...
Its very useful especially when on a phone conversation to check my calendar!!
I managed to get it working fine now....here's what i do...
I've disabled manipulation of my camera button by AEBP. I dont have multiple clicks for the camera button, but i have ToggleToday assigned which I find really realllyyy useful!!!
Thanks again!!
San
Good idea - didn't think of that!
I think this is a tool that I will actually use - I'm doing a few hacks to make the today screen more useful, so having quick and easy access to it helps I think.
V
Vijay, this app sounds like a great idea. I always go back to my today screen on a call.
I'll give it a whirl and let you know.
Is this program still available?
It sound promising
I would also like to give it a try...
Xadaa: I've updated my webpage with this app.
Sorry for the slow updates, I've got no XDA devs access at work Nightmare!
V
I've got this mapped to the camera button on my wizard, and i love this little app. It's been working without any problems for about two weeks now.
Thanks a lot for this program
My single problem is thatMy pjone doest turn on when I press the hard button I have assigned to TodayButtonOFF. It goes off when I release it and works great while i am pressing it.
Great software
Thanks. I have it assigned to my PTT button on my Tilt. Works great!!
Heres the cab again if anyone wants to try it.
M'kay. I was looking at an assortment of "remaps your softkeys" programs, and I'm either too stupid to see it, or it doesn't happen. It's also possible I'm searching using the wrong terms. I am a little slow sometimes...
I want to press the center button on my dpad, and have it open the Start Menu. I'm using WA2 to gain cascading menus, and I'd love to be able to completely launch a program without using the touchscreen or pulling out a stylus.
If it's already been done, can someone please point me to it? If it hasn't been done, whose butt do I need to start kissin'?
Here's a shot of what I'm talking about, just in case my mis-speaking is confusing you. When I press that button, I want that menu to open!

have you ever heard about smartskey???
Look out for it..
is the answer for your prayers... You will not remap your center button, however a long press on the left softpad key will open your program menu.
Good luck

Yes, I've heard of it. No it's really not the answer to my prayers.
I don't really care for the smartskey method (it would take too long to explain, but I don't like it, and that should suffice for explanation), and I don't get why you can't remap that center button...it doesn't do anything in the Today view (or much in anything else, other than "execute" whatever is focused).
Thanks anyways for the reminder. If all else fails, I can fall back on that as an unsatisfying workaround.
Got any other suggestions?
M'kay, it's not freeware, but it does have a free trial. AE Button Plus is capable of doing what I want, within reason.
I have to double click my center button (reserving single click for selecting highlighted items, etc.) to open the start menu. I'm actually okay with this as a solution.
Still, this program, as good as it is, is more bulky than I'd like (nearly 1/3 MB!) for such a seemingly simple action. I'd expected this to load pretty small, and was surprised by the relatively large package.
I know it's cheap of me, but I'd still welcome any (free/smaller footprint) alternatives to this...
Try HButton it does everything and more, i love this app.
you are able to map 6 apps on 1 button and you can even use your slider to scroll.
check this

At first blush, this appeared to be what I was looking for. However, I cannot figure out how (if it's even possible) to reassign one of the five HButtons to activate from the center button on the dpad, or how to distinguish that from, say, clicking the dpad once to OK a procedure or popup message.
Not really interested in clicking and holding (for example) my Messages button to open the start menu.
I feel rather silly for being so picky, but there you have it. I'm picky.
After wrestling with all of these, I'm slightly embarrassed to say that charly_mx had the best suggestion, right off the bat. It's not perfect, but launching Start from my left soft key isn't terrible, just not what I wanted.
Sometimes, you just don't get what you want, so you take what you can get, and so I have done that.
Apologies to anyone that I annoyed (esp. charly_mx).
is it posable to remap the power button? if so, i have a p4350 and what im trying to do is remap it so a single press would "lock" the device with slide2unlock and then slide2unlock turns the phone off after a min, then wakeup using the power button...
Can i do this?
yeah i would really like to know if this is possible, there's a sofware i need to map to this button.
thanks is advance.
This is something I need too, anyone have any solutions?
WM5NewMenu
perhaps with WM5NewMenu ? Some of the hardkeys you can change with this
tool, but i'm not sure if it is working with the power button

Cheers
i doubt it as the power button can turn a device on and off even if it have no rom and on mean being in bootloader mode and off mean well being off
doubt software can chance something as genericly hardware based like that
I did spend some time on this issue few months ago - but it seems that the user programs won't even receive an event for the button press of the power button at all.
I learned that it can be programatically prevent the OS from shutting down by the power button, but then, there's no way for any running program to learn the key press event...
I gave up on the power button and mapped my RED button to do the lock. But you may also try press and hold the power button - that's right, that will activate the "power off" dialog - but it generates a key press as well that you can make use of. I know it's not convenient, so that's what I got so far.

Yes and no. Just I'm working on something like that. The only way to detect power button is to use SetWindowsHookEx.
Here is the thread on how to set hook on power button - http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=713754&SiteID=1
Try this
This page has all the hardware key remaps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-355141.html
Create a shortcut to S2U2 and rename it to Short_Power.lnk and put it in the windows dir of your device.
is there anyway we can create a shortcut to "power off" the device ?
EDIT then we will be able to assign it to another .lnk
Hi all,
Is there a way to lock the screen after making a call? Obviously you can't hold down the end key (or at least I can't) without hanging up the call and I have AE Button set up to screen lock with a two press of the volume up button but when I do that, the volume just adjusts. Any ideas?
Thanks,

are you looking to disable the display so you don't launch programs with your face? if so, consider using a quick press of the power button to turn off the display screen.

Actually what happens is when I use my bluetooth, I'll dial the number then turn off the screen (with the power button) and put the HD back into the case. When the call finishes, the screen will come back on and that's when I'll sometimes get misc. screen touches.
Thanks,
Ho'okani

Try the "reset and wifi" cab in this post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584415
It creates 2 shortcuts in your start menu - 1 to toggle wifi on and off, and 1 to reset the device.
I've got both in my quick links, which is nice
I like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=554177
Works well with my HD2.
Touch X Powerbutton actionscreen ver 1.2.cab by smaberg is an excellent application and well worth installing.
Install it to device memory and then soft reset. Now holding the right most button (screen on/off) for about 3 seconds will bring up an action screen where you can toggle many functions as well as soft resetting your device or turning it off.
Works perfectly on the HD2 and I would recommend it

Why not just turn it off and then on again, using the power button?
If your device is so frozen that you can't do that, you'll be unable to access any applications to do it either....surely? Or am I missing something here...

Try "xda Shutdown". There is a thread ecspecially for this app with tons of skins.

Just press one of the volume buttons on the left side and select "off" or "silent"
I realy dont see the meaning of a link button for a soft reset when you have the "long Power" press button. Its hardware and its responding even when the screen freezes (sometimes ). And overall this "reset links" cannot save you of case removal when the pda is "software dead".

Old thread, I know. Just resolved the same issue with TCPMP. Went almost to the factory reset. Accidentally fixed it by connecting to PC over USB. Immediately unfreezed and never occurred again since.
