Splashtop THD on Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Nexus 7 is a Tegra 3 tablet, yet Splashtop THD (Designed for Tegra tablets) is incompatible. Does anyone know why, or if it will ever become compatible?

IIRC, will become compatible. When is up to the developer. It is only compatible with Transformer Prime 10 inch iirc. iirc, THD was designed for 10 inch devices in mind.
I read all this somewhere but do not have the link. Probably googling Transformer Prime and splashtop will yield results.
I am waiting out on my $25 purchase waiting for a THD version for Nexus. I am more interested in access to my PC's Office programs, but I may as well get the added benefit of better gaming compatibility.

splashtop thd was designed for 10inch tablets as mentioned above. devs are working on a version that will work with the nexus 7.

I don't understand why '10 inch' makes any difference on a device with the same chip set and number of pixels on screen.
Besides , I find the spashtop hd app even more responsive on the n7 than THD on my prime or my iPad 3 version. Its extremely fluid. Maybe down to better WiFi performance? I stream live/recorded TV from my htpc flawlessly with it.
If I had anything to complain about it would be that the 7 inch screen makes it hard to precisely control the mouse cursor location.

Who got theirs?

Mine came in this morning. Been playing with it for a couple of hours now. The screen is OK, but not as good as my New iPad, but that is to be expected. I did have it crash on me after installing Netflix and signing into it. I do like the fact that it is already registered to your Amazon account out of the box. I only had to connect to WiFi. Turning off adds is done on amazon.com under manage Kindle, which I did. the interface is VERY sparse. I was able to grab cisco Anyconnect VPN, but haven't tested it yet with my MiFi (I'm already at work). The initial setup and download really drags the tablet almost to a halt. But after that it's back to normal speeds. All in all, I still want a custom ROM of JB on here. I have Skype installed but haven't call anyone yet. Also, the speakers ARE AWESOME. I work in IT and all the guys loved the sound coming from this puppy! Streamed Downton Abbey without hiccups or buffering. Quite nice. No buyers remorse yet.
Cool! Can you side load app and install a different launcher like you could with the last fire?

So, I'm an owner of an original fire, got it as a Christmas present from my wife last year. I sold it a few weeks ago planning on getting the N7, but waited for the amazon presser about the new line.
After watching the live blog and all that, figured I'd give the KF another shot, and if I didn't like it, I'd return it and get the N7. After playing with this new KF for the past few hours, it's awesome, so much better than the original, for what I use it for. I like the new email client, the screen is fantastic, it's snappy and feels very cohesive and not so much an interface stuck on top of an andriod OS, even though it is.
So far, I'm impressed.
Yeah I just got mine as well and played around with it for about 10 minutes. So far the screen is gorgeous and the software isn't as laggy as the preview models that were shown in the videos. And the default web browser search engine for me was already set to Google. I'll post up more impressions in a bit.
Don't forget to update to 7.1.5. The sound on this device is freaking awesome...
Got mine today too...initial experiences:
- Side-loaded OnLive 1.2 and it works flawlessly
- Side-loaded Zinio reader from the Zinio.com site, but it FC several times...not usable. Emailed Zinio support
- Really want Rdio somehow, but haven't found the APK. Amazon Store says its not compatible.
- Fully MP3 library totally accessible and interface nice
- Amazon Prime Video works wonderfully but the series interface isn't so great...would like an easier way to tell were I left off on my Sons of Anarchy catch-up.
- Hulu Plus works but playback is janky--just isn't smooth or integrated
- I personally find the overall interface skinned nicely, but clumsy to navigate....coming from Gingerbread, Jelly Bean and iOS.
Looking forward to lots of crazy hacks to really push the hardware on this puppy!

The OMAP 4460 in the 7" hd has a stronger gpu (clocked higher) than the tegra 3 as well as hdmi out and dual band wi-fi. What are you referring to when you mention that the nexus 7 is a stronger hardware platform?

Interesting quote from a reviewer
This is a Wi-Fi-only device that Amazon has packed with dual antennas, support for MIMO and reception in both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands in an attempt to speed up the connection. Despite that, I found Web browsing to be noticeably slower than on the Nexus 7 -- so in my experience, at least, that hardware addition is for naught.
The device is missing some prominent hardware features that its competitors have, such as GPS. The Kindle Fire HD's processor is far from leading-edge: a 1.2Ghz dual-core OMAP 4460 Texas Instruments processor, compared to the more powerful quad-core Tegra 3 processor that powers the Nexus 7. After several hours of use, I found the tablet seemed to suffer occasional lags when opening apps and on occasion when using apps. Restarting the device solved the problem, but then the lags eventually reappeared.
The middling-level hardware isn't as surprising as you might expect, because the Kindle Fire HD hasn't really been designed to be an all-purpose tablet -- despite Amazon's claims to the contrary. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos summed up the purpose of the Kindle Fire HD succinctly during the product announcement when he said, "The Kindle Fire is a service."

Hehe, I may do that too. That's why somehow I have a Motorola Xoom, iPad 2, iPad 3, Kindle Original, Nook Touch, Galaxy Note, Motorola Razr Maxx, and Galaxy Nexus.
The Fire HD appealed to be because I wanted more or less a dedicated reading device that also does other stuff. The antiglare screen looks pretty good so far and that was a plus for me. Now, if I can only get it to run Zinio stable, then I'll have pretty much achieved my goal.
I can deal with the text layout of Business Week from Amazon on the Fire, but for my other two magazines--Outside and National Geographic--I really want the full color magazine experience since its so much about the photography. Zinio's resolution is just so much higher than the same magazine pages via the Amazon Kindle app. I think Zinio uses vector for the layout where it appears Amazon is rasterized.

16gb vs 8gb for $199, much better sound, apparently better screen, hdmi, possibly better build quality. and maybe a better camera.
versus gps and Tegra 3.(not sure if Tegra 3 is usefully better other than Tegra-only games).
I like them both but I really want the better sound and hdmi, and hacking would eliminate one of the main advantages of the Nexus 7 which is the larger app selection.
I got mine today. Too locked down for my tastes but a root in the near future will take care of that. I like that I can "borrow" books from Amazon and watch whatever prime videos that are in Amazon's catalog. Micro hdmi works great, screen looks fantastic, the speakers sound pretty good and I can fit the 7" in a cargo pocket. Overall, I think it's a good buy for $199.

[Q] Nexus 7 - how good is it at handling games?

I want to buy a tablet for playing games, but I also need it to handle 3G, have some decent GPS and a camera. Since Nexus doesn't have 3G, a decent GPS (it doesn't have GLONASS) and a rear camera I'm not happy with it (I can buy 3G modem, but with other things there's not much I can do), but I read that it is totally awesome when it comes to games.
So my question is: is it? I presume it has access to some Tegra3 exclusive games, but are there so many of them and are they unique enough to make me care? Also, since it's Tegra3 it probably handles most games better than older devices, but do higher details and more FPS compensate for small screen? I wonder whether to buy some 10 inch tablet instead (eg. Galaxy Tab 2 P5100, Acer Iconia A501, Motorola XOOM MZ601, Galaxy Tab P7500).
It seems like you would be happier with a Transformer Prime or TF300. The Nexus has a fine GPS (I always lock within seconds) and is great at playing games (Tegra 3 is second to none in regards to gaming right now).
Lack of 3G and a rear camera seem like deal breakers for you though. Get the tablet that has everything you need, or you will end up regretting it.
Off course tegra 3 is great at handling games....
But as far u want 3g ang gps too u can look for galaxy tab 2 7"(dont go for 10" it is a over priced waste.u can look for note 10.1 instead).it have everything u want and its also perform great in games....
For 10" variant my suggestion is note 10.1
Transformer or Note are a little too expensive for me. I should've mentioned that I have limited budget (I live in Poland and Nexus 7 costs about 300$ here, and that is the most I'm willing to spend on a tablet).
I was just wondering whether I will be able to live without a camera and with an additional device for 3G thanks to the Tegra3 gaming experience. That's why I'm trying to figure out how good is it. I'm not convinced that a 7inch screen will provide a significantly better gaming experience than a 10inch screen, even when details and FPS are better (I have 32inch HD Ready TV and 21inch Full HD monitor and I prefer the former). Also, I read that Tegra2 exclusives are available on other devices thanks to Chainfire 3D, although I can't find any information about how those games perform on eg. Samsung Galaxy 2 10.1 (P5100). And as for Tegra3 exclusives, there are not that many of them out there, right?

you're telling me that you're hands will do better on a 10" screen then a 7" screen? you cant even compare the gaming experience between the two. 7" wins hands down. how are you gonna hold that 10" clunky piece of garbage in your hands and be comfortable?

bigger screen = the need for more pixels so they dont look stretched
smaller screen = could have the same amount of pixels for less space to make it look better.
I've have tegra 3 games such as modern combat 3, nova 3, and some pinball game, that I'll tell you right now, look absolutely crazy. If you decide to get a nexus 7, root it, overclock it and it'll run even better.
For me a bigger screen is better, unless there is some radical difference in quality. It seems we have different taste.
I've looked on those titles you've mentioned and they look impressive indeed. Are there more of those Tegra3 exclusives? And do Tegra2 exclusives look better on Nexus than on Tegra2 devices?

im pretty sure if you go to the google play store website and type in "tegra 3 games" it'll show the variety
On Google Play website it isn't even mentioned that Modern Combat 3 is optimized for Nexus 7. Even on tegrazone most of the games are not exclusives. It's pretty confusing.

modern combat 3 may have been a bad example because I don't think that game was made specifically for tegra 3 devices. Check out dead trigger, shadowgun, riptide gp, or fort courage is a good one to

Well, I've just read several reviews and absolutely everyone claim that for gaming there is no better device than Nexus 7 and that a 7 inch screen is better than a 10 inch screen. I'm pretty surprised by this concept, since I thought that I will just put a tablet on my laps and then play, but somehow it seems that you have to hold your device while playing. It is pretty weird, but that many people probably cannot be wrong.
Coming from an iPad, I prefer the N7 for gaming. Its smaller and lighter when playing games and the GPU is absolutely amazing. I find that android has a lack of games and apps in comparison to iOS though. I have already played most of the games on my iPad that I find in the play store now.
Well, you've pretty much convinced me to buy a Nexus 7. Now I have to figure out how to overcome the lack of 3G, because that's the most serious deal-breaker for me. I can probably handle lack of camera and GPS without GLONASS, but I absolutely need my tablet to have 3G. MiFi seems like perfect solution and those devices have a microSD slot, but I don't know whether I will be able to install games on a card accessible through WiFi. I guess I'll just buy it and find out.

Splashtop THD for Phones (do you want it?)

Hi all,
So the Galaxy Note II's been out for a little while now. Pretty nice, it's almost tablet size. ;O
And then now we have Splashtop 2 HD out on phones. Great! But.... not great for gaming!
Anyway, so... wouldn't it be nice if Splashtop THD was added for phones to fix that problem!
OR some better controls for Splashtop 2 >> such as the hot keys you find in the other, tablet only app.
In the "Request a feature" section I have recently added these two topics:
"Add Hot Keys for Splashtop 2 or THD (for phones)"
and
"Splashtop THD for Phone"
I can't post the links yet, sorry. I'm asking for the support of all who are possibly interested in the addition
of Splashtop THD for their phones to add their comments please! (I realize that THD stands for Tegra 3 apps,
but I am hoping that the same functionality can be added to phones.)
Thanks!

The Galaxy Note II doesn't have a Tegra processor so they won't be making a THD version for your phone. BUT my HTC One X+ has a Tegra 3 yet I can't get the THD app >:C I guess Splashtop designed it to be only for tablets? Which is fairly annoying!! My phone has the same screen resolution and processor as my Asus tablet but I guess they are like, 'sorry no, you have a small screen so we won't let you instal this'. That being said I would like to see them enable Splashtop THD on phones and not just tablets.

Dell Venue 11 Pro - finally a Transformer alternative?

Hi guys,
I really enjoyed the few first hands-on and impressions of Dell's new Venue 11 Pro.
The Atom version combined with a battery keyboard dock could finally be a match for the Android Asus Transformer, if you want the Win8 ecosystem.
I'm still a bit shy due to the lack of apps compared to Android, but I think the Venue could be a really good solution for a multimedia tablet / MS Office notebook.
Anyone else here considering to get one?

I'm probably getting one but I want the top end i5 rather then atom. Atom will be nice though and much more useful then any android tablet.
There isn't as much of a need for 'apps' with full win 8 however there are quite a few good ones and the list keeps growing.
Well, with apps I guess I would be satisfied with a good touch optimized videoplayer and a few decent games.
The other thing is the Atom: I never had one and I'm not really sure if it's good enough for HD video playback and fluent MS Office working...

search youtube for "robaxx". He has done several demos on a vivotab smart showing what the atom can and cannot do (played a few games, played several HD movies simultaneously in different applications). The clovertrail chip is powering the vivotab smart and is both a) massively inferior to the bay trail chip on its way and b) massively superior to the previous generation atom chips in the old netbooks. Robaxx managed to load a 200 page word document no problem. My brothers netbook is capable of at least decoding a full HD video clip in VLC media player but only having a 600 pixel tall screen cant display at 1080p for obvious reasons
VLC is coming out as a windows 8 app with touch support, on a desktop system VLC is by far the best free media player and often beats paid for ones too in my opinion, to be fair its probably pretty usable on touch too as is. Otherwise there are a few paid apps on the windows store, I think powerDVD is up there.
The atom is not going to play skyrim on full settings or whatever, actually skyrim might not even run on all low settings. But it is still plenty powerful for office, video playback and web browsing. One of my friends even did his full A-Level computing coursework on a 1.3ghz dual core intel atom netbook, 3500 lines of VB.net in Visual Studio 2010 and a 250 page word document, A grade coursework, all done on his machine.
That's really cool info!
I'm using VLC for years now on my Desktop, with a short break with Kantaris, and the lack of a true touch VLC app was honestly a reason for sticking with Android so far.
And with games I'm talking more like Dosbox stuff and older games or touch games, so no state of the art stuff

Unless you could the possibility of the acer W4 fitting the keyboard for the W3, but that wasnt a true convertible either, more a keyboard with a tablet stand on it.

Well Asus, you could have made me really happy if only that thing would have FullHD.
Now I'm stuck between the lower resolution and no USB on the tablet Asus, which on the other side features a 500gb HDD (!) and the FullHD Dell with USB on the tablet, which might have just too little space...
Why couldn't they combine their ideas?

THe previous transformer tablets have all had a small dongle available which connects to the docking port and provides USB host functionality, effectively doing same job as a USB-OTG cable on android phones.
Btw to let you guys know, I think I'll go with another device

Clover Trail had an entirely different GPU core to Bay Trail, so its pointless to look at how games ran on it when discussing Bay Trail devices.
I've got a lot of gameplay videos from my T100 here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLR0UF7yQj8p9jWCP1OYPC9-lKFYskGK87
Worth nothing that the Z3740 seems to give a bit more graphics performance than the Z3770, likely down to the fact that the lower base clock means the CPU portion of the SoC uses less power, allowing the GPU portion to use more.
Atom Z3740 (T100) vs. Z3770 (Venue 11 Pro) - 3DMark Comparison
I noted you've done Miracast testing for the T100. Can you specify in either the ActionTec Screenbeam Pro or the T100 to use the 5GHz band for the Miracast? If yes, would you do a comparison between 2.4 and 5GHz casting to see if there is improved performance in the latter?
BTW, does T100 spec specify if its radio config is 1x1 or 2x2?
Lastly, since the wifi radio does double-duty in connecting to both the LAN and the Miracast, can you check for Miracast performance when under heavy net access, say, in downloading torrents or ISOs?
As an aside, I also noted the Miracast pairing uses an 8-digit key, similar to WPS, which is known to be a security risk. (WPS handshaking is a 4+3, which has only 10^4+10^3 = 11000 combos, and can be broken in a few hours). I'm curious if there's any published attempt to hack Miracast source & sink devices.

From the Anandtech review: "ASUS equipped the Transformer Book T100 with dual-band (2.4/5GHz) 802.11n courtesy of Broadcom’s BCM4357. The T100 features a 1-stream (150Mbps) implementation. I didn’t have enough time to test wireless range/performance but the sheer inclusion of 5GHz WiFi in an entry level PC is music to my ears."

Can't test right now, but I'd assume badly.
I've used it to project to the TV while playing games, web browsing and streaming via YouTube, but if you start really hammering the WLAN then based on my previous experiences with WiDi it won't go well.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I checked the Actiontec manual, and it has no mention of selectable band. Some of the later ones, eg the recently announced Belkins, do allow for band selection. I think SOP is to try for 5GHz if available, then fall back to 2.4GHz if not.
Per Miracast whitepaper, 2x2 5GHz is required for 1080p casting. T100's 1x is adequate for its 720p'ish screen (mirroring), but I'd be curious to see performance in extending to TV as a second screen in its native 1080p res. AFAIK, all Mira-capable 1080p devices (Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HDX, Sammie's tabs) all have 2x2 radios.
Do you have a dual-band N300 USB wifi adapter handy? I'd like to see if a 2x2 USB can improve perf. Probably would need to disable the internal WLAN.
BTW, for those looking for a good dual-band N300 USB, the D-Link DWA-160 is a good performer, and it's being clearanced on eBay for $10 a stick. This would be a cheap and painless way to upgrade your Win toys to 5GHz. Make sure to use it with a USB cradle to optimize for antenna positioning. One caveat is that it probably won't work with micro-USB ports in current mini-tablets, as 100mA isn't enough.
I seriously taking a look at the Venue 11 Pro with baytrail soc.
Had the latest ASUS TF701 Tegra4 with dock but after I returned the 4th one I asked my money back and now I am waiting till there is good proof that Asus solves the connection problems with the mobile dock.
But....then my attention was caught by the new Dell Venue 11 Pro with baytrail soc.
Was amazed about the good reviews (although MS app store still sucks) and especially by the enormous battery time they achieved with the mobile dock.
Up to 20 hrs with brightness at 50%.
I still have a TF700 and I use that when travelling instead of taking my laptop.
Reason: weight reduction of the handluggage.
Next to that I use it a lot as tablet on the couch in the evening but no heavy 3d gameplay.
I wanted a successor and liked the "transformer" format so much.
Not being married to Android I like the most the open character of the Android system and the way you can nearly set it up 100 % to your likings with custom rom's. So I am worried about the closed W8 environment for tablets.
But now Asus sucks really in build quality and maybe the Venue 11 Pro is the new kid in town, but it's weight with mobile dock is half kilo more than my TF700 so that could be an issue.
So when anyone can post his/hers experience with the Venue 11 Pro with baytrail soc it would be very helpfull for decision making.
I bought it "just because" without even realizing it's running full W8... I love that thing, it's awesome. It does get a bit warm though. But it's really great. It's fast, snappy, runs all apps... The only thing I wish is that there were more great modern UI apps.

Half-Life 2! Portal!

Just released to the Tegra Zone! When can we see this on the MOJO? Thoughts?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nvidia.valvesoftware.portal
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nvidia.valvesoftware.halflife2
Wait...Were they just released, or am I just noticing them because they were updated today?

They were announced at the end of last week. In the announcements it was stated as released for the Shield only for both. I'm sure at some point it will be available on other Tegra 4 devices.
Dang. That's what I get for not hitting my usual news sites in a month. Thanks for the heads up, though.

They were just release afaik. Someone needs to rip the APK and try it on the Mojo. Or, we need a way to spoof the Play Store into thinking the Mojo is a Shield. I'd buy it just to try I love Portal. I am sure it would work fine on the Mojo.

I have a ripped copy on my Nexus 7 flo, it crashes getting to the menu.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I can confirm, HL2 is working on the TegraNote 7 with a MOGA Pro controller attached via Blutooth
Not working on Nexus 7 (2013) and Galaxy S5 (native and with GLTools).
has anyone tried it on a Tegra 3 Device? Ouya anyone?
Just ordered a Shield anyway but it won't arrive in the next 2-3 weeks. (Shipping from Hong Kong) ...
They ie.portal/half life 2 for tegra 4 are a waste of time for now on the mad catz m.o.j.o,they are not telling anyone next to the game icon on the list that they are only useable with android 4.4 kitkat, therefore i bet loads of these upcoming and current games are, also the shadowgun deadzone game i tried and says only for tegra 3 devices,it's a right @rse to list games but not tell you what they do/do not work on,bounty arms isn't working with the m.o.j.o controller either,so it does beg a big question that is why are mad catz selling the C.T.R.L as an android phone controller as a seperate item if the compatability is all but none existant in the current games, they really need to get to it and release 4.4 kitkat for the mad catz m.o.j.o and a controller compatability update to flash with software via the usb port under the batteres.
A friend of mine is supplying me with Portal from his Shied to test on the Mojo tonight. I will let you guys know if it works...I am very curious.
any chance for this to run on a non tegra device?
like the last hack made by chaineFIre wich was awesome and enabled me to run dead trigger at its full on my aging mali 400 :<
I really need to upgrade to a snaodragon 805,810 or an Nvidia K1:crying:
I really cant decide weather to get an Nvidia device or not since im in love with the galaxy note series but sadly they never come with tegra cpu's
maybe I should just get a vita and keep my n7100 for a long while since im in dire need for a gaming handheld
I wish somewhere in an alternate univers we get to see a note 4 with a k1 processor:cyclops:
but that will never happen lol
No, won't run on my snapdragon nexus 7.
From what if heard elsewhere you can't even install it unless you have KitKat.

running kitkat and no luck on mali 400 gpu
so surprisingly borderlands 2 gets ported to the vita but we cant run HL2 on a snapdragon 801 ?????
hmmm seems like a driver hack should do the trick
The problem is that Nvidia worked on it and optimized it for Tegra 4.
I'm not sure whether it performs just an GPU ID check or it actually does require Tegra 4-only features/extensions.
I don't think we can get it to work on other devices without a wrapper.
I tried Half Life 2 on my Tegra Note 7, but my game crashes when i try to load the first level.
The main menu works fine.
I am using an EVGA Tegra Note 7, Android 4.4.2 and a Xbox360 Controller.
Any tips?

Can anyone confirm if the crash is due to lack of RAM? Remember our Tegra Note 7s only come with 1 GB of RAM while the SHIELD and M.O.J.O come with 2 GB. It could be crashing because it couldn't load the entire level into memory.

Well half life 2 doesnt load maps like that. Its loads it section by sections so i seriously doubt they changed it for android to load the entire level that would require regretting alot of the engine. Online multiplayer games it will load the whole map but for the single player it did not thats why you got that loading bit while running or driving around.
