usb drive support and rooting - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I read that USB support for jumps drives is not supported out of the box, but if you root the nexus 7 tablet and download a file manager it is.
2 questions,
1- is this accurate info and 2
2- if i root the tablet, does that mean that any updates google pushes in the next weeks or months wont alow me to update?
sorry if i dont actually know the terms and associations with rooting... i never did it for my phones as all how too's and info are not really put together well

Rooting won't stop updates.

You can re-lock your bootloader once you've rooted, though if you need to unlock it for any reason again, it will wipe the device.
In order to root, you need to unlock the bootloader. If the bootloader is unlocked, you do not receive official OTA's from Google and you have to rely on custom roms to get the latest update. Keep in mind, this is not a problem as this is a Nexus device and typically developers are very fast to integrate a new update from Google into their rom.

Wait, what? Are you serious? This is the first I heard of this. How difficult would it be to re-lock the boot loader? I definitely want USB OTG support (curse you Google for not making this work out of the box!), that means I'm easily going to opt in favor of rooting to get that functionality... after I use it for a while of course to make sure everything works fine . I would LIKE to have Google OTA updates, though, so re-locking the boot loader interests me somewhat, but certainly not the wiping if I unlock it again... *facepalm*
That said, with the last line you said, are you saying that a rooted/custom flashed N7... on say... CM9... would simply get their updates from CM9 devs instead?
And with that, if I root my Nexus 7, but don't ever lock the boot loader to receive OTA like you mention, then I'll.... never be updated. Right?

It is not difficult to relock to the bootloader, just a simple fastboot command via ADB. I see no benefit however in relocking the bootloader once you've rooted.
Forget about OTA's. The beauty of rooting and flashing custom roms is that you don't have to wait for an OTA's. CM team is going be producing nightlies for CM10 soon, hopefully the guys at AOKP will add the Nexus 7 to their new JB builds. I'm currently running MoDaCo 4.1.1, Paul did a great job with this rom. You won't get OTA's on custom roms, you have to update them manually, which is not a pain at all.

OH BOY...see the main reason im getting the device is to send it to mother in law in MX. and it would be nice to send a USB chip with videos, or photos or other things if need be,
Since i wont have the device, installing custom roms is not really an option.
the whole point of the nexus device for me was the support and timely updates from google VS manufacturer branded versions that take forever to fix any issues.

When unlocked & rooted, what about updates?

Hi .........
Just bought the Nexus 7, so, I'm now selling my almost new Sony S tablet, the N7 is far superior.
Just unlocked bootloader and gained root access, what I'd like to know is, how do we know, there is an update, and, do we somehow unroot the device, get the update, then re-root afterwards?
I'm new to all this, and don't know......................

Depends on what ROM you are running. In my experience Stock rooted devices will receive OTA's, but if you are running a custom ROM its possible that it won't. If you did the stock root method you should be alright, however the wonderful folks at XDA are very good at staying on top of release and keeping your rooted device up-to-date.
Hopefully one of the developers here would put up a stock rooted rom from any update. It may take a day or so but usually someone does it.

unlock immediately or wait?

In an attempt to think about something other than 'when will it ship', I'm trying to decide if the bootloader should be unlocked:
immediately on getting the phone;
wait a couple hours to be sure the device has no major problems;
give it a week or two to see if any issues come up
Reason for waiting would be in case you have to do a exchange/return, and unlocking bootloader (I believe) voids warranty. So what do other people plan? Is it easy to re-lock the bootloader in case you need to send the device in?

You can always re-lock the bootloader.
Code:
fastboot oem lock
without any rom to flash why unlock it so soon?
unlock that baby
Since, as a security measure, the phone nukes all data when it is unlocked, I'd rather do it earlier, before I get any of my data on there.

because if you don't unlock the bootloader right away, then when you decide to do it at a later date, all of your info and data will be wiped.
If you are going to flash a new ROM you need to wipe anyway. So I guess I'll wait for a little bit. Even though all the apps screaming root privilege in my face.

Unlocking bootloader is a different type of wipe that erases all data on the device I believe, including /sdcard
When wiping before installing a ROM it's usually just /system folders wiped that pertain to the ROM, but your personal folders and data (pictures etc) will stay intact.

There are many useful apps that require root privileges. So even if I dont flash a Rom, having root is a high priority. I expect a custom recovery will be created very soon. Hopefully before Monday when it comes.

my understanding is that unlocking will wipe everything on the /sdcard partition as well? In which case everything you've transferred: music, videos, whatever, would be lost. Just wiping data for a new rom doesn't have quite the same impact.
I made the mistake of waiting to unlock my n7. Fair to say i will unlock this straight out of the box
Unlocking it is the first thing I'm gonna do.
I have waited as there is nothing worth flashing yet.
No big deal to pull things from the phone and unlock at same time as flashing
Unlock it as soon as you open it:good:
Considering this is a pure android experience Nexus, I don't think I will ever install a rom or anything else besides apps. I honestly don't really see the point, it seems most roms for other phones try to make a rom be like a pure android experience. So to me I don't see the point when it is already done.
Example would be the rom on my GSIII its 4.1.2 but doesn't have any of the features that 4.1.2 had on Nexus 4 in the videos and reviews I watched. Seems more like the original Jelly Bean.

I probably won't end up flashing any custom roms, at least not for a while, but don't some good apps (LightFlow?) require root? Mostly, it's just future proofing.

[Q] Just got my Nexus 10, first steps?

I just got my Nexus 10 and haven't even turned it on yet. Giving it a nice charge.
So what's the first steps?
With my Galaxy Nexus, the very first thing I did was unlock the bootloader because anyway it wipes the device. Then I rooted it. And then I went along my jolly way. Eventually, months down the line, I installed Bugless Beast.
So what about this tablet? Turn on and unlock bootloader then root? Or do I want to get an OTA first in case it's on 4.2 and needs 4.2.1?
Anything else someone new to the Nexus 10 should know about?
By the way, I choose stability over experimental features. Hence, Bugless Beast on my GNex instead of some of the more feature-filled (but less stable) ROMs.
Thanks for you help!
turn it on --> get your update(s) to 4.2.1 --> unlock bootloader --> root --> install adaway and just leave it. the stock rom is great but i can't live without an adblocker. otherwise just give the developers time, as i said before, the stock rom is great

Exactly what I did
I prefer ROM Toolbox Pro for add blocking many other features that a rooted user will appreciate. I have the pro ver.
ROM Toolbox Lite (free version)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.liberty.toolbox
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
Thanks guys. I'll do exactly that.
I hope we reach the point where ROMs are more stable and less experimental for the Nexus 10.
@jjdevega, Since I like to compartmentalize my tools (I already have a favorite ad blocker, file explorer, titanium backup, etc), ROM toolbox is less useful for me. Thanks for the suggestion though.
I'd recommend just keeping the bootloader unlocked
I like my device to either be completely stock, or custom. Leaving the bootloader unlocked on a stock, non-rooted ROM bothered me quite a bit lol (not sure why; I mean I know leaving the bootloader unlocked doesn't really do anything, but still...), and I would go between custom ROM's and stock a lot, locking and unlocking the bootloader each time too.
Yea, I was planning on leaving it unlocked. Unless I need to return the tablet for warranty purposes, there's no reason to re-lock the bootloader.
Well, actually there are security implications regarding unlocked bootloaders. That's actually why unlocking wipes your device, so that an outsider can't bypass security by unlocking the bootloader and then getting whatever information he/she wants.

About root: What to do when there are updates?

I am very excited to see that the new Moto X is about to be rooted soon (apparently). I just want root for Adaway, Xposed, and a few other niceties. I have no wish to put a custom ROM on the Pure.
But I have a few basic questions (sorry if this seems noobish), what happens when Motorola sends updates to the phone? In particular, when it gets updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
- Would I need to unroot, install the update, and then root again?
- Would updating get rid of root, and would I need to wait for a new root procedure to be discovered?
- Is there some risk that I would need to re-install all my apps?
- Anything I need to worry about?
Thanks for info on this!

Flash Recovery
Flash SU.
It's an unlocked phone. You never lose root.
Or if you're going the whole hog -flash a custom ROM (stock or AOSP) and wait for the developer to promptly update the package
I assume with some patience updates will get posted here to flash. Stock rooted ROMs are pretty popular I think this will be no different.

Your last comment is reassuring. I'm still learning when it comes to rooting; I had my friend root my Galaxy S3 years ago, but I'm gonna try to do it myself this time and learn the details of the process, and all that it entails (possible consequences, etc). Please bear with me.
Based on what I've read online (for example this article), it says OTA updates will break the root, but I can always re-root after the OTA and it's only a minor hassle (for phones with unlocked bootloader). Is that pretty much what you're saying as well?
So once Motorola rolls out the 6.0 Marshmallow update, would I need to re-unlock the bootloader (via this thread ) , and then re-flash recovery, etc?

Some apps only work with root (like Batter Battery Stats, xposed). That's a good reason to just root without custom roms.

Double tap is ROM specific isn't it? Or is there an xposed module? Its the one thing I miss from my OnePlus, despite the 'aware' sensors
Much of the stuff you people are trying to accomplish can be done with Nova Launcher. No root needed.
If you flash back to stock.
Remove the custom recovery.
You can now take the OTA.
After you take the OTA.
Re-install TWRP
Flash SU.
I have done it on other unlocked devices.
The point being, an unlocked bootloader allows you to flash/install TWRP whenever you want.
Then you can regain root.
Unlocked bootloader means you can always regain root.

There might be but if u want simple flash a custom stock rom, im sure they will have a few, its basically stock rom but with tweaks and with a few stuff added. I opened this thread hoping for a method to prevent taking the 6.0 OTA, because as I understand, from reading the Moto X PE TWRP thread, The only root method for 6.0 is systemless, which I think I want to stay away from, in hopes that 6.0 will get regular root, in the future. I think i would rather stay on LP, while waiting.
My MXPE arrives Thursday! I would like to use it some, before having to root, but I am certain the 6.0 OTA update will be soon to show.
Is there a way to stop the OTA, prior to bootoader unock and root?
Do I just need to unlock/root/flash ROM right away?
I am hesitant, because I'e been away from Moto rooting for a few years. I've been Samsung rooting, with TWRP and SafeStrap.
The stuff I'm reading here, about Minimal ADB, Fast boot folder and using cmd prompt is a bit daunting and I would like more time to continue reading and learning, before doing the deed.

Is there any risk in downgrading stock build?

I have a xt1602 with may security patch.
If I flash the earlier stock ROM would it hurt?
Will the bootloader will face any problems?
Whatever you do, just skip the bootloader part when downgrading! Other than that, there is no risk.

Just be careful if you've downgraded that you don't install an OTA update, especially if your bootloader and your system are not at the same patch level. We've seen many instances of downgraded devices being bricked as the OTA patches their newer bootloader (as the OTA appears to assume that your system is the same patch level as your bootloader), which corrupts to the point of requiring a blank flash or a motherboard replacement.
If you've downgraded, the safest way to update would be to wait for the fastboot 7.1.1 stock ROM rather than chance it with the OTA.

Oh, thank you! You just saved a noob's device (mine) from getting bricked in future.
I went ahead yesterday and rooted my device.
Things have happened in the following manner
I purchase a moto g play xt1602 retin
I get may security patch OTA, I install it. All stock.
I unlock bootloader and flash TWRP
Take a backup of new rootless pristine system using TWRP
Root using supersufixer.zip and supersu.zip in TWRP, take another backup.
Now, my plan was as following
Stay on rooted stock, reap AdAway benefits and lower brightness below minimum(didn't happen)
Wait for Nougat OTA
When it arrives, follow https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4-play/how-to/guide-return-to-stock-firmware-recovery-t3551797 this guide but just skip flashing bootloader
Boot into newly flashed stock and proceed with updates
But reading your reply makes me sure that this process will possibly brick my beloved moto g4 play. So I should either wait for may stock build or Nougat stock build zip and not apply OTA when it arrives. Am I correct?
Apologies for being so verbose but I'm sweating. I don't like sweating.

I followed a similar path - happily remaining on stock MM with July 2016 patch level for the last 8 months. I block OTA updates by disabling/freezing Motorola Update Service (com.motorola.ccc.ota). Simple, effective, works.
Device (XT1607) is fully unlocked, rooted and rocking Xposed with a small but potent suite of modules that brings out the best in this phone. I'm in no hurry for stock Nougat. Will update in time once migration path is clear and benefits outweigh effort/risk. I lack nothing Android 7.x brings to the table.
Don't forget to take an occasional nandroid in TWRP; store it on the SD card or off-device. Can be a life saver.
Wait - what about that ancient xxx patch level? OMG!! I'll be pwned by evilness everywhere. Relax, surf responsibly....everything will be fine.
I don't like to sweat about mundane things either. There is no reason to. Many sweaty soles are self inflicted. Don't become one of them.

I followed a similar path - happily remaining on stock MM with July 2016 patch level for the last 8 months. I block OTA updates by disabling/freezing Motorola Update Service (com.motorola.ccc.ota). Simple, effective, works.

As Davey126 has mentioned, you might as well enjoy your ad-free device and treat your eyesight and not worry too much about getting the Nougat OTA. Besides, you'll want to wait to see if there are any pertinent issues with the 7.1.1 update (even with the soak test, some bugs might still emerge in wider deployment), which you may avoid if you don't need to upgrade to the newest patch
Furthermore, mods like xposed don't work fully on Nougat (rovo89 hasn't released an official xposed, and the unofficial builds are still hit and miss), so Marshmallow might be more for you if you really like to customise. As for being behind on security patches, I concur with Davey126 that as long as you're sensible about where you download and install APKs from, you should be in good stead. Security patches are nice, due diligence and being aware about what you're putting on your device is crucial to staying safe.
In other words, enjoy the flexibility of your rooted device and when the fastboot Nougat ROM comes out, then you can think about whether you wish to update or wait for any bugs to be ironed out. Alternatively, I'm sure someone will release a TWRP flashable build of the stock 7.1.1 (which shouldn't touch your bootloader/GPT anyway, so should be safe to use). Either way, waiting will mean you don't risk your bootloader or GPT and still have a device you can enjoy
