About root: What to do when there are updates? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
I am very excited to see that the new Moto X is about to be rooted soon (apparently). I just want root for Adaway, Xposed, and a few other niceties. I have no wish to put a custom ROM on the Pure.
But I have a few basic questions (sorry if this seems noobish), what happens when Motorola sends updates to the phone? In particular, when it gets updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
- Would I need to unroot, install the update, and then root again?
- Would updating get rid of root, and would I need to wait for a new root procedure to be discovered?
- Is there some risk that I would need to re-install all my apps?
- Anything I need to worry about?
Thanks for info on this!

Flash Recovery
Flash SU.
It's an unlocked phone. You never lose root.
Or if you're going the whole hog -flash a custom ROM (stock or AOSP) and wait for the developer to promptly update the package
I assume with some patience updates will get posted here to flash. Stock rooted ROMs are pretty popular I think this will be no different.

Your last comment is reassuring. I'm still learning when it comes to rooting; I had my friend root my Galaxy S3 years ago, but I'm gonna try to do it myself this time and learn the details of the process, and all that it entails (possible consequences, etc). Please bear with me.
Based on what I've read online (for example this article), it says OTA updates will break the root, but I can always re-root after the OTA and it's only a minor hassle (for phones with unlocked bootloader). Is that pretty much what you're saying as well?
So once Motorola rolls out the 6.0 Marshmallow update, would I need to re-unlock the bootloader (via this thread ) , and then re-flash recovery, etc?
At any point would I need to worry about losing any data on the phone?
I never seen the point of just rooting for apps and such i always rooted for custom roms but honestly if u want to stay with your stock rom and root it, with every update u need to flash that stock rom again.. Then update... Then reroot as some phone do loose root after updates..
Thats why i flash custom roms even custom stock roms all u gotta do is just flash the rom update and ur set

I actually want motorola's features (Moto display, Moto actions, always-on voice recognition).
Is it possible that there is a flashable version of the stock Motorola rom? So once there is a 6.0 update, instead of OTAing, I can download a flashable version of it and just flash that instead?

Some apps only work with root (like Batter Battery Stats, xposed). That's a good reason to just root without custom roms.

Yup, for me Better Battery stats, Titanium Backup, the possibility of putting the back button on the bottom right instead of left, and activating double tap are all reasons to root the stock rom.

Double tap is ROM specific isn't it? Or is there an xposed module? Its the one thing I miss from my OnePlus, despite the 'aware' sensors
Much of the stuff you people are trying to accomplish can be done with Nova Launcher. No root needed.
If you flash back to stock.
Remove the custom recovery.
You can now take the OTA.
After you take the OTA.
Re-install TWRP
Flash SU.
I have done it on other unlocked devices.
The point being, an unlocked bootloader allows you to flash/install TWRP whenever you want.
Then you can regain root.
Unlocked bootloader means you can always regain root.

You'll never loose data (except for the first time you unlock the bootloader) unless you choose to wipe internal storage. So no worries mate.

Good to know. I'm curious to know if there's a simpler way to update. Is it possible that there is a flashable version of the stock rom and future stock roms? There might be but if u want simple flash a custom stock rom, im sure they will have a few, its basically stock rom but with tweaks and with a few stuff added. Then feom there just flash the updates for that rom. On my lg g3 i use to use a rom called cloudyg3 rom, it had everything stock rom had but a more tweaked version and such.

I opened this thread hoping for a method to prevent taking the 6.0 OTA, because as I understand, from reading the Moto X PE TWRP thread, The only root method for 6.0 is systemless, which I think I want to stay away from, in hopes that 6.0 will get regular root, in the future. I think i would rather stay on LP, while waiting.
My MXPE arrives Thursday! I would like to use it some, before having to root, but I am certain the 6.0 OTA update will be soon to show.
Is there a way to stop the OTA, prior to bootoader unock and root?
Do I just need to unlock/root/flash ROM right away?
I am hesitant, because I'e been away from Moto rooting for a few years. I've been Samsung rooting, with TWRP and SafeStrap.
The stuff I'm reading here, about Minimal ADB, Fast boot folder and using cmd prompt is a bit daunting and I would like more time to continue reading and learning, before doing the deed.
ETA: I just realized that the OTA will come from Motorola, not Verizon. How does the OTA come>
Is there a Moto app, that I can disable, without root?

[Q] Is there anyway to use the stock rom and keep root?
I just wanted to ask and see if anyone knows. Most the custom roms I end up having issues with apps I run, but they worked fine on stock. So I wanted to go back but keep my root access.
Did you back up your stock ROM? If you did not, I think someone has the stock kernel as link to one to the threads in the DEV section.ts installed... Edit 01: I am almost sure, you will lose root when a new OTA gets installed...

MXPE on the way. Root after getting M update?
My phone is on the way. It's perfectly timed with the imminent update to Marshmallow. My plan is to get the OTA update first, and then root the phone. Can I still rely on the existing guides to root the phone? Or would I have to wait until root becomes discovered/available again on the new OS version?
You should be able to root it but we really won't know until the OTA arrives.
I've had the phone for a few days now, and happily I've received the 6.0 update OTA. Is there any current info how whether Heisenberg's rooting guide still works? (completely, partially, ???)

The fact is we don't know how root will work on Nougat, or Xposed... It took Xposed a while to get support for Marshmallow when it released (a few months if I recall correctly, they almost said f*ck it and gave up on Xposed completely), could be the same thing with Nougat. Chainfire will probably have (or has) get root working on Nougat (I really haven't investigated this)... Google has stated that the system is more secure, which they did with Lollipop and Marshmallow, and even then Chainfire stated that Google could, potentially, shut down the ability to root completely by known means quite easily. You cannot update/upgrade with TWRP installed or when rooted... You must be stock for it to work.
While I do believe Google could shut down root capability, I don't think they will at this time. At least not on the Nexus phones. And I feel that with companies like Motorola giving the ability to unlock bootloader, I doubt it more.

What happens after I root and try to upgrade
Hello Everyone. I'm new to this forum, so please be kind. I have searched extensively for the answer to my question. So, I spent a whole day upgrading and rooting my SM-G900V Galaxy S5. Lots of dead ends on this, but I got it! I did this because I needed more room on my internal memory. I was almost out, so I used Titanium Backup and uninstalled all the bloat apps. My question is this. I am now at Lollipop V5.0 rooted. I would like to upgrade to Marshmallow 6.0.1. If I do this with a custom ROM: 1) Will all the bloat I just deleted all come back? Are these apps part of the custom ROM? 2) Will I lose the root? If the bloat stays off, I really don't care as that was my only reason for rooting in the first place. I used XDA forums pretty extensively for information for getting as far as I have. Many, many thanks. Dave

Look, LP and below does not require unlocked bootloader to be rooted. MM and abode does. That's why the possibility of rooting MM on your phone depends on it's hardware (CID). Blackcat's scripts are great, but the modern method is to flash a "COMBINATION" ROM which can be rooted easily, to root it, to install SafeStrap Recovery and then to flash your favorite ROM (system partition) and firmware (bootloader, kernel, modem, recovery). The last action may contain bootloader unlocking process if the hardware is compatible.
Coming out of Hibernation
I'm trying to get this device up to date. Coming out of storage it's on Android 6.0 Security Patch 2/1/2016... TruPureXMM 2.9 Build. Is there a quick and easy way to get this device onto a current ROM?

Stock please.....
i'll try custom as well....
Assuming you have the XT1575, you can try here. This will bring you up to stock nougat with an OTA out there if you choose to take it. Just a couple of caveats if you flash nougat: Once you do so it limits the availability of custom roms greatly. As far as I know this is the last available stock flashable images so if you take the OTA, flashing it again could cause issues as it is considered "downgrading". I personally wanted to root so I did not relock my bootloader and froze my phone taking the OTA so I could always flash the full image should anything go wrong.
Thanks..,. Yes I am talking about the XT1575. Can you also point me in the direction of maintaining my current Root status..... While upgrading to what you would consider the best current rooted ROM. Thanks

Mileage varies person to person on custom so I just play it safe. If you go stock rooted, make sure you pay attention when flashing the stock nougat and do the steps in the post that keeps your bootloader unlocked. After stock ROM is flashed, temp flash TWRP, do a backup, then TWRP again and flash root option of your choice. I personally use Magisk to root so apps pass the SafetyNet checks.
