I have a xt1602 with may security patch.
If I flash the earlier stock ROM would it hurt?
Will the bootloader will face any problems?
Whatever you do, just skip the bootloader part when downgrading! Other than that, there is no risk.

Thank you very much! Being a noob that I am, can you please tell me how can I skip it? Or point me to a tutorial that does it.

No problem! When you are flashing the stock ROM files with fastboot, just skip the fastboot flash bootloader command.

Just be careful if you've downgraded that you don't install an OTA update, especially if your bootloader and your system are not at the same patch level. We've seen many instances of downgraded devices being bricked as the OTA patches their newer bootloader (as the OTA appears to assume that your system is the same patch level as your bootloader), which corrupts to the point of requiring a blank flash or a motherboard replacement.
If you've downgraded, the safest way to update would be to wait for the fastboot 7.1.1 stock ROM rather than chance it with the OTA.

Oh, thank you! You just saved a noob's device (mine) from getting bricked in future.
I went ahead yesterday and rooted my device.
Things have happened in the following manner
I purchase a moto g play xt1602 retin
I get may security patch OTA, I install it. All stock.
I unlock bootloader and flash TWRP
Take a backup of new rootless pristine system using TWRP
Root using supersufixer.zip and supersu.zip in TWRP, take another backup.
Now, my plan was as following
Stay on rooted stock, reap AdAway benefits and lower brightness below minimum(didn't happen)
Wait for Nougat OTA
When it arrives, follow https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4-play/how-to/guide-return-to-stock-firmware-recovery-t3551797 this guide but just skip flashing bootloader
Boot into newly flashed stock and proceed with updates
But reading your reply makes me sure that this process will possibly brick my beloved moto g4 play. So I should either wait for may stock build or Nougat stock build zip and not apply OTA when it arrives. Am I correct?
Apologies for being so verbose but I'm sweating. I don't like sweating.

I followed a similar path - happily remaining on stock MM with July 2016 patch level for the last 8 months. I block OTA updates by disabling/freezing Motorola Update Service (com.motorola.ccc.ota). Simple, effective, works.
Device (XT1607) is fully unlocked, rooted and rocking Xposed with a small but potent suite of modules that brings out the best in this phone. I'm in no hurry for stock Nougat. Will update in time once migration path is clear and benefits outweigh effort/risk. I lack nothing Android 7.x brings to the table.
Don't forget to take an occasional nandroid in TWRP; store it on the SD card or off-device. Can be a life saver.
Wait - what about that ancient xxx patch level? OMG!! I'll be pwned by evilness everywhere. Relax, surf responsibly....everything will be fine.
I don't like to sweat about mundane things either. There is no reason to. Many sweaty soles are self inflicted. Don't become one of them.

As Davey126 has mentioned, you might as well enjoy your ad-free device and treat your eyesight and not worry too much about getting the Nougat OTA. Besides, you'll want to wait to see if there are any pertinent issues with the 7.1.1 update (even with the soak test, some bugs might still emerge in wider deployment), which you may avoid if you don't need to upgrade to the newest patch
Furthermore, mods like xposed don't work fully on Nougat (rovo89 hasn't released an official xposed, and the unofficial builds are still hit and miss), so Marshmallow might be more for you if you really like to customise. As for being behind on security patches, I concur with Davey126 that as long as you're sensible about where you download and install APKs from, you should be in good stead. Security patches are nice, due diligence and being aware about what you're putting on your device is crucial to staying safe.
In other words, enjoy the flexibility of your rooted device and when the fastboot Nougat ROM comes out, then you can think about whether you wish to update or wait for any bugs to be ironed out. Alternatively, I'm sure someone will release a TWRP flashable build of the stock 7.1.1 (which shouldn't touch your bootloader/GPT anyway, so should be safe to use). Either way, waiting will mean you don't risk your bootloader or GPT and still have a device you can enjoy

Just used it this morning to install root on 4.4.2. Worked fine.
It doesn't seem to be working for me. I must not be doing something right. I am using these commands,
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery TWRP2710-RAZR_M-KITKAT.img
it appears to work, it says successful but when I boot the phone into recovery it is still the stock. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong?

I'm assuming you have an unlocked bootloader. I had that same issue after the initial upgrade to the new OTA and bootloader. I ran through a few steps like unlocking the bootloader again (may have not done anything), I used a pre-rooted RSD flash of stock and I used the ADB method of installing the recovery instead of using fastboot.
To use the adb method I downloaded the batman 1.2 recovery tool, just renamed the version of TWRP (in this case TWRP2710-RAZR_M-KITKAT.img) to TWRP.IMG and placed it in the root of the batman folder, then I ran the flash TWRP recovery option. Note that the batman tool was designed for older firmware and you should probably not run any other functions on it if you are on the new firmware.

You need to remove or rename,
Code:
/system/[COLOR="Red"][B][I]recovery-from-boot[/I][/B][/COLOR]
Thanks I will give this a try. I may hold off for now I read there was a possible update coming. I would guess you would need the stock recovery to get the update to work.
You could always flash the old recovery back. Since the soak test invites just came out it will probably be a month until it's released.

Two weeks at best, considering it's the 4.4.3, which is probably the last update we'll get from Moto, unless a miracle occurs and we're given the 4.5 or 5.0, which shouldn't land until at least 5 months after it's release (if it does release next week).
I can't believe they're already planning another update. Sitting on jb we were all pretty sure that the kk update would be the last

Either the KK build was just too buggy to ignore, or Verizon is making them close the bootloader exploit hole again.

It's a shame that they'd even bother closing that on a 2yr old phone but that's probably right. Too bad really. it's probably the only thing that would keep this device going for much longer. I know I was about to move on b4 towel root + bootloader unlock became available

Yeah, I'm hoping the update is because there were bugs that were too big to ignore, but Verizon forcing them to patch the exploit is probably more likely. Definitely a shame to close it on a 2yr old phone. IMO, we need some kind of consumer protection law that forces VZ and AT&T to allow BL unlocks once a device reaches EOL. It would even be better for the environment as it does keep devices relevant for much longer and less likely to end up in a toxic Chinese burn pile.
I feel like the reason we got the exploit back was a Moto dev saw the device is reaching EOL and decided it wouldn't hurt to help the community by putting the exploit back in, because it would almost have to have been deliberate.
Well it's actually lucky that 4.4.4 didn't patch towelroot, so root, I THINK, will stay, but for the bootloader unlock, it's better now than wait with Verizon.
I am very excited to see that the new Moto X is about to be rooted soon (apparently). I just want root for Adaway, Xposed, and a few other niceties. I have no wish to put a custom ROM on the Pure.
But I have a few basic questions (sorry if this seems noobish), what happens when Motorola sends updates to the phone? In particular, when it gets updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
- Would I need to unroot, install the update, and then root again?
- Would updating get rid of root, and would I need to wait for a new root procedure to be discovered?
- Is there some risk that I would need to re-install all my apps?
- Anything I need to worry about?
Thanks for info on this!

Flash SU.
It's an unlocked phone. You never lose root.
Or if you're going the whole hog -flash a custom ROM (stock or AOSP) and wait for the developer to promptly update the package
I assume with some patience updates will get posted here to flash. Stock rooted ROMs are pretty popular I think this will be no different.

Your last comment is reassuring. I'm still learning when it comes to rooting; I had my friend root my Galaxy S3 years ago, but I'm gonna try to do it myself this time and learn the details of the process, and all that it entails (possible consequences, etc). Please bear with me.
Based on what I've read online (for example this article), it says OTA updates will break the root, but I can always re-root after the OTA and it's only a minor hassle (for phones with unlocked bootloader). Is that pretty much what you're saying as well?
So once Motorola rolls out the 6.0 Marshmallow update, would I need to re-unlock the bootloader (via this thread ) , and then re-flash recovery, etc?
At any point would I need to worry about losing any data on the phone?

Some apps only work with root (like Batter Battery Stats, xposed). That's a good reason to just root without custom roms.

Double tap is ROM specific isn't it? Or is there an xposed module? Its the one thing I miss from my OnePlus, despite the 'aware' sensors
Much of the stuff you people are trying to accomplish can be done with Nova Launcher. No root needed.
If you flash back to stock.
Remove the custom recovery.
You can now take the OTA.
After you take the OTA.
Re-install TWRP
Flash SU.
I have done it on other unlocked devices.
The point being, an unlocked bootloader allows you to flash/install TWRP whenever you want.
Then you can regain root.
Unlocked bootloader means you can always regain root.

There might be but if u want simple flash a custom stock rom, im sure they will have a few, its basically stock rom but with tweaks and with a few stuff added. Then feom there just flash the updates for that rom. On my lg g3 i use to use a rom called cloudyg3 rom, it had everything stock rom had but a more tweaked version and such.

I opened this thread hoping for a method to prevent taking the 6.0 OTA, because as I understand, from reading the Moto X PE TWRP thread, The only root method for 6.0 is systemless, which I think I want to stay away from, in hopes that 6.0 will get regular root, in the future. I think i would rather stay on LP, while waiting.
My MXPE arrives Thursday! I would like to use it some, before having to root, but I am certain the 6.0 OTA update will be soon to show.
Is there a way to stop the OTA, prior to bootoader unock and root?
Do I just need to unlock/root/flash ROM right away?
I am hesitant, because I'e been away from Moto rooting for a few years. I've been Samsung rooting, with TWRP and SafeStrap.
The stuff I'm reading here, about Minimal ADB, Fast boot folder and using cmd prompt is a bit daunting and I would like more time to continue reading and learning, before doing the deed.

I found it, and replied.
My phone is on the way. It's perfectly timed with the imminent update to Marshmallow.
My plan is to get the OTA update first, and then root the phone. Can I still rely on the existing guides to root the phone? Or would I have to wait until root becomes discovered/available again on the new OS version?
You should be able to root it but we really won't know until the OTA arrives.
I've had the phone for a few days now, and happily I've received the 6.0 update OTA.
Is there any current info how whether Heisenberg's rooting guide still works? (completely, partially, ???)

TruePureX is actually one of the ROMs I was thinking of flashing.
So, if I take the 6.0 update, I can still root in a relatively normal way?
systemless root does not sound like a path I wish to take.
How does the OTA come to this device? A Moto app, I presume?
Does Moto ram it down one's throat, like verizon?
I was just reading on the moto forum, about simply unlocking the bootloader will stop the OTA. I haven't finished the thread, but others were skeptical.

I have tried both OTA and the stock rooted rom that is here in the development section, there are users who have had great success using the SU version 2.62...I personally have used 2.62, then 2.64 with great success...I have not used the system-less SU in these cases (although I have tested previously and they also worked)
so, feel free to flash the stock rom found in the development section, then flash 2.6(whatever works for you)...none of what I state is an endorsement of one rom over another, as all members here have contributed great efforts to get us this stuff...:good:

I am not really following....I think you are saying that the ROMs are safe.
Are you saying that a "regular" root method, for 6.0 OTA is available and stable and I shouldn't be worried about taking the 6.0 OTA?
If I were to take the 6.0 OTA, could I get back to 5.1, since unlocked bootloader is available?
Could this be done with the return to stock tool, even after 6.0?

My point is, if you are rooted and unlocked, why take the OTA if you could just flash the 6.0 stock rom? why would you want to go back to 5.1?

I just want to learn what I can, before I start doing anything. I've read much, but I'm still confused as to what is possible and what is not. I've not had a phone this new, with the capability of unlocking the bootloader.
I believe that if the MXPE is on 5.1.1 when I fire it up, it will soon want to install the update.
I would like some time with the phone before I have to jump into unlocking and rooting, but I don't think I'll have it, so I would like to be prepared.
Did they lock the bootloader in 6.0?
I'm in the same boat as the op. Seems like there's no clear tutorial or anything. I just want stock with everything included (factory) 6.0 with xposed and root. I didn't even see a flashable stock MM zip with root anywhere.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...rom-stock-rooted-debloated-x1575-6-0-t3262242 here is stock in several flavors...if you do not have root, there are several options to try...systemless, or the latest beta SU's...some have stated that version 2.62 has been good for them...I have tried 2.62 and have also flashed 2.64 and both worked for me. Do some reading in these threads, plenty of guidance and info already about these issues.

Believe me, when I say that I AM reading. I had shoulder surgery, last Wednesday, so I've got time on my hands. How else do you think I ended up finding and buying a relatively new Motorola, with unlockable bootloader?
There is just so much info and while reading, I keep going down rabbit trails of other interesting things to know about rooting it, but may not be the most important question I have. I read the entire thread on the (De)Odex Stock / Rooted / Debloated 6.0 MPH24.49-18, last night and am still confused.
It just seems to be unclear whether or not 6.0 is fully rooted and if there is any going back, once you're there.
I am leery, because if the Note 3, in safestrap. Once a LP ROM was flashed there was no going back to KitKat, even tho, early on, many stated that it was possible.
I've been away from Motorola rooting, since my RAZR M. I don't recall all the PC steps.

I believe that 6.0 is rooted.
My question is how.
Which root methods are available?
Is systemless the only choice?
What is the exact (step by step) flash order?
Once the 6.0 OTA is taken, is it possible to go back to 5.1.1 stock or rooted, if desired?
here are my offerings to your questions...
My question is how.
Which root methods are available? SU silly!
Is systemless the only choice? No -- (note my previous screenshot is not systemless and is beta 2.64) see my previous posts on this
What is the exact (step by step) flash order? see this link, http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/general/xt1572-mm-twrp-root-xposed-t3276792 but note it is for the 1572 device, steps are the same...you will need the 1575 Stock rom found here instead http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...rom-stock-rooted-debloated-x1575-6-0-t3262242

When Nougat gets released for this phone in how ever long it takes do you think someone will eventually be able to root it on this phone?
Seriously?

You don't have to call him a douche. Honestly, I was thinking "Seriously?" as well because this is the first thing you think (rather, post of) before Nougat even comes out. We can't see the future, so this question will probably go without an indefinite answer. My input on it, though, is that root is possible if engboot still works, but if it doesn't then we're probably screwed. And I doubt engboot will work without having even MORE issues than it already does, if it even works at all.
But seriously, the name calling was unnecessary. You're the one asking the question, no need to call people names.

thank you for your reply on your thoughts about it, thats all I was looking for. The person did not have to comment "seriously" he could have just ignore my post all together, I believe he was being a douche. The commenting of "seriously" was unnecessary. I appreciate your answer as I was just curious. Have a good day

It'll come precisely 2 months, 1 week, 3 days, 10 hours, 30 minutes, 6 seconds and 83 milliseconds of nougat drop date

So rooted MM or non-related Nougat... that will be the question
Sent from my SM-T715Y using XDA-Developers mobile app
I don't understand the reasoning behind the question. Nougat isn't even out yet. If you want root, then root your phone. If you want rooted Nougat, wait a couple days after release for someone to build a rooted ROM on it. Why would you want to flash back to stock just to root again instead of just flashing the rooted version from the beginning? I'm assuming that's why you got the "seriously?" reactions. Well, that and the fact that since Nougat hasn't even been released yet, so it's physically impossibly for anyone to know if it can be rooted. But yeah, I'd advise you to wait until someone uploads a rooted Nougat ROM for your phone instead if flashing back to stock and hoping to root that way. Its a million times easier to root it before putting it on your device
Based upon my understanding of how KNOX operates along with the stricter changes made to dm-verity in 7.0, I wouldn't hold my breath when it comes to rooting the S7. I know that the guys that come up with these rooting methods are very creative and smart, but KNOX, combined with SELinux, dm-verity, and locked bootloaders, is almost impossible to overcome. I've been looking at the people discussing the dirtyc0w exploit as an alternative root method, and I don't think it's possible to use it because of these safeguards.
We were extremely lucky with the leaked engboot method of rooting the S7. Without that, it's very possible that we still wouldn't have root on it.
Just a bit of addition to this conversation: It's likely our current root method won't work on Nougat. It depends on how different the kernels are, but since the engboot is built for MM there's no guarantee it's compatible with a new version. There's no guarantee it won't prevent flashing the engboot kernel once you're on it, and flashing a rooted system and then switching kernels won't help since the new kernel will verify the system.
I just really hope that we can get SuperSU on Nougat now that It has began to roll out today on my AT&T Galaxy S7. I've captured the ota update for it but someone else has already posted them on the forums so I won't waste my time. Despite how beautiful Nougat looks, I'm gonna wait and stick with MM. Why? Root. I'm almost certain that once you've updated to Nougat, it won't let you flash back to MM because of the locked bootloader, and for me personally, I want to keep root so bad because of the Viper4Android equalizer. The thing gives great sound quality and music wouldn't be the same without it. Honestly, If you really wanted to keep root then my advice is to stick with MM and wait (as long as it may take) for a working root method to come out for this new update.
Cheers!

You can downgrade back to MM. Both the updates are on bootloader v4.

I simply downloaded and am currently using the latest update from the developers website. Be sure to download the latest version of the app listed under "Viper4Android FX" and make sure BusyBox is properly installed on your device under /system/xbin or /system/bin. I was previously on APJ4 and just upgraded to APK1 today and haven't noticed any problems.

Flash one??? You want stock or custom?
Stock please.....
i'll try custom as well....
Assuming you have the XT1575, you can try here. This will bring you up to stock nougat with an OTA out there if you choose to take it.
Just a couple of caveats if you flash nougat: Once you do so it limits the availability of custom roms greatly. As far as I know this is the last available stock flashable images so if you take the OTA, flashing it again could cause issues as it is considered "downgrading". I personally wanted to root so I did not relock my bootloader and froze my phone taking the OTA so I could always flash the full image should anything go wrong.
Thanks..,. Yes I am talking about the XT1575. Can you also point me in the direction of maintaining my current Root status..... While upgrading to what you would consider the best current rooted ROM.
Thanks

I personally stick with rooted stock. Mileage varies person to person on custom so I just play it safe.
If you go stock rooted, make sure you pay attention when flashing the stock nougat and do the steps in the post that keeps your bootloader unlocked. After stock ROM is flashed, temp flash TWRP, do a backup, then TWRP again and flash root option of your choice. I personally use Magisk to root so apps pass the SafetyNet checks.
all's well went with ResurrectionRemix staying on 6.0 quite pleased - thanks for your help
