Just got my Sprint contract terminated for "illegal tethering" - EVO 4G General

Been with them for 12years and had the same number. Trying to move to another carrier. It sucks because they only gave me till next week to port my number or I LOSE IT. Looks like I'm going to get a rinky dink phone until I can get a upgrade. Going to miss my Evo This number is on everything so I must do it. My business will suffer if I don't get this number.
I was up in arms but I am a firm believer in karma and I did tether and got caught so WTF am I going to do. In the letter it said you are "using it as a modem and tethering with out a tethering plan".
Just wanted to ask, can they really tell, or is it just data usage they are going by.

do you mind me asking what ROM and what tethering app you were using?
Sorry man, that totally blows. How much data did you blow through? I remember people getting letters after going through a few hundred Gigs a month.

Been tethering my EVO's for a couple years. First my EVO 4g with my laptop, now my "retired" 4g with my EVO 3d. I watch netflix and surf the web on my 4g. No problems yet. So...just how much data have you been using?

I'm using Derp 3d and I'm using wireless tether for root. In March I used 109gb and in April I used like 102gb. I use Hulu plus and I think thats the's reason. I've been doing it for 2 years with netflix, my pc and video games but just got hulu 3 months ago, and now this. SMH.

Most users don't use that much on a cable/dsl connection, let alone wireless.
I'd agree with sprint, that is excessive.
Just get the cheapest prepaid setup you can find until you figure out where you're going to move to.

Yea, that sucks. You were terminated more for the excessive data use than for tethering. Everyone who I know of who had their contracts cancelled for tethering were also using large amounts of data. They likely would have got you even if you were paying for it, as were many of them. They just used the tethering excuse to try and make an example.

"can they tell?" interesting question... Did you use HTC DEV to root your phone and can Sprint track downloaded apps (wireless tether) from the market? They could probably track those and put 2 and 2 together.
your data usage is very high and noticeable.

That is why you got cancelled. Is that all 4g data? Because if it is 3G, even at 1MB, it would take you 12 days of constant downloading to get to 109GB of data.

I used unrevoked when it was first available, and I didn't download it off the market. I agree it was excessive. Probably why I'm not too upset more concerned with my number I guess.

As said above that is really excessive so most likely it's not more of a They found out but more of a Using Way to much data and so they cut off your data.. Now as how they found out.. Most likely they assumed that its basically impossible to use that much data on a Phone no matter how hard you try.. But most likely it's labeled "illegal tethering" For the fact that if you have unlimited data then they have no real reason to cancel your contract other than for illegal tethering if you don't have tethering on your contract.

If I can figure out from your few posts here that your real name is EDITED TO PROTECT PRIVACY and you're from EDITED AGAIN TO PROTECT PRIVACY, I don't see why sprint couldn't figure out that you're tethering. Thing is, I tether too, but I keep my usage below 5 Gigs a month, so no red flags are never raised, hence no investigations.

Unlimited Data is not "Unlimited Everything"
According to your Sprint terms and conditions, you have unlimited email, pictures, internet surfing and messaging, as well as NON-CONTINUOUS streaming of videos, downloading, and online gaming.

To Tell the truth it's illegal and I did it, not much I can say or am going to say. My girlfriend is a lawyer and asked if I wanted to go that route. No because I feel stupid trying to fight something I did although I get free legal service it seems like a waste of time.
Am I pissed I got no more free internet....hell yeah LOL what do you think. I'm not rich but not hurting for money either, so in hind sight it seems not worth it lol. I guess with Hulu wither I paid for the hotspot service or not it wouldn't have made much of a difference. GB update disables tethering even with s-off?

I accepted the OTA but still have full root with s-off, superuser, and recovery.
But today I went to tether with 3G and a message popped up saying I have to add tethering to my plan or whatever... It didn't do this with Froyo... I was able to tether just fine. I very rarely tether because I have an at&t laptop card but once in a great while it doesn't connect so I use my evo.
And before y'all get on me about it, I know you're supposed to pay for tethering.
Thanks in advance

NOT IN THE MARKET! make sure old one is not installed. lolz you're good to go once installed. btw. WE ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO PAY FOR TETHERING! Absolutely (in my opinion). Carrier's / ISP's need to abandon this "plan = device" mentality and get with the times. The reality is, what consumers want and expect is "plan = person".
Netflix has done very well by abandoning the old mentality. "I" pay for a plan and "I" can access that plan from any device at any time. If they followed the old model my Netflix streaming account would only work on one device... and I'd bet their growth would have been halved or worse with that strategy.
Market forces will push them where consumers want to go, whether they like it or not. That's exactly what "tethering" is doing: driving the market.
So does anyone know if there's a way to use the stock tethering with rooted gb?

So if I update my phone to the newest operating system can I use 3.1beta to wifi tether still? I used some app to root so I can use "wireless tether", but I'm thinking if I update I'll lose that like I did the last time I updated.
Ok nevermind, It's for rooted only phones, If I update I won't be rooted anymore.

I don't get your logic..even with tethering...it still is mobile to mobile..the medium to use is just is different. Does not using Bluetooth device to talk on the phone constitute using voice a external device also count? We don't have to pay a Bluetooth fee now do we. What is then different for using tablet or other device for accessing? This has nothing to do with hacking to another line..or phone for that matter

Your argument is dumb. A Bluetooth headpiece is a extension/accessory of the same device.
Contractually you're only allowed to have data on one device. Anything more requires a tethering plan. From my perspective its also wrong to tether because cellular data is a finite resource. Sprint's data network is already in a obvious state of over capacity, having multiple devices sucking down data, with the secondary+ (laptop/desktop/even tablets) using more data because of it's default use case, without contributing resources ($) is not a good thing for either Sprint or all other users.
Sprint is living a dream right now. Unlimited data will eventually go, and when it does and the data caps do come, then I'd support free tethering. If you pay for an allocation of 2-5gb of data on their network then I feel that you can use it however you want. For now though I side with Sprint.

I was with you until you said you would tether if you paid for an allocation ( 2-5gb).
That makes no sense, because if you don't breach your contract when you are paying for "unlimited data" why the heck would you when you have limits? Makes no sense to me, is one or the other, can't have it both way specially when it makes no sense at all, atleast to me.
Is like, imagine a restaurant gives you unlimited refills and they bring it on this "shot glass" but since its unlimited you want to Exchange it for a bigger cup, they tell you that's 5 bucks extra to do that, and you are fine with it, you won't wait till they are not looking to snatch the bigger cup for free.
But then if the policy changes to where you can only refill that shot glass three to five times, and not unlimited times, and still get the bigger cup for 5 bucks, then you will be alright taking the risk of getting cough by snatching the bigger cup? See how that makes no sense? Taking the risk for a smaller reward.

In the last 50 years, corporate taxes have been going down as a percentage of government revenue while individual taxes have provided a larger and larger share of the Government tax base. The top 1% of income earners (meaning CEOs and the like) own 34% of the country's wealth while the bottom 80% own just 15%. Corporations spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year to lobby (aka: bribe) congress to promote their own selfish corporate interests, and the Supreme Court just granted them the right to spend unlimited funds promoting their chosen presidential candidate. They relocate their coporate offices to a post-office box in the Cayman islands to avoid U.S. Taxes. Copyright laws have been extended numerous times by corporate owned legislators to prevent cultural cash cows from entering the public domain where people could enjoy them free of charge. We have a tax code that is tailored to corporate interests at the expense of ordinary citizens. Firms like Walmart aggressively fight unionization efforts (yaaaay capitalism when it suits us) in their stores and through state legislatures all while bribing their bought-and-paid-for legislators to institute price-caps on credit and charge card companies (yaaaay Socialism when it suits us). Between 2000 and 2008, Wall Street and the banks operated what was essentially a massive pump and dump operation that left millions of Americans owing tens of thousands of dollars more on their homes than the homes were worth, and nearly sunk the economy in the process, while Wall Street titans and banking CEOs walked away with billions upon billions of dollars in profits. Not one of the top corprate scam artists has seen a day of jail time, but instead have been the beneficiaries of billions of dollars in bonuses. Hedge fund managers pay a tax rate of just 15% on tens and sometimes hundreds of millions of dollars they make through managing other people's money (they keep their tax rates low by buying off legislators). When the oil company BP nearly destroyed the economy of the Gulf States through an accident caused by reckless drilling practices, we had politicians describing a meager $20 billion repayment fund as government "extortion" while apologizing to the company for the unfair way it was being treated by the government.
In this context anyone who loses a day of sleep because they're rooting their phone and getting free wireless tethering out of the deal needs to just take a bus to New York City and personally lick Donald Trump's brown eye clean the next time he takes a dump.
The next time you have an opportinuty to screw a giant corporation you shouldn't ask yourself "is it right or wrong" you should ask yourself "how likely am I to get caught, and can I deal with the consequences if I do."
These sorts of questions of right and wrong make sense in a Democracy. In a plutocracy (which is what we've become over the last 50 years) they are at best quaint, and at worst naive.

Your argument/example is both dumb and confusing.
Situation unlimited: you pay for unlimited soda refills, cheating would mean filling the cups of other people with your unlimited refills. I wouldn't support this at all.
Situation limited: you pay for 1 gallon worth of soda, you *should* be able to use it however the hell you want.
That said, I wouldn't recommend breaching a contract under any circumstances. I just want to point out that I'd make an argument for it. Like how the OP somehow feels he should be entitled to tether Sprint's unlimited for free, I think you should be entitled to use a data allocation anyway you want.

Unlocking a car doesn't make it go.
The "stock" OTA rom doesn't have root, but if you flashed superuser, or actually flashed the rooted version of the OTA then yes, you are rooted. But you're still running a stock ROM, which means you don't have a free tethering solution built in. You now have the ability to add one, whether it's the wireless tether from the market, a hacked version of the Sprint tether, or a different ROM that has the Android built-in tethering restored. Until you do one of those, you're just running the ROM Sprint released, and they certainly didn't give you any tools in that ROM to allow you to tether for free.

data usage warning from sprint

my wife got a call from sprint last week telling her she had 10 days to reduce her usage or they would cancel her line...she was rooted and using wireless tether...not installed from the market....she uses mp3 rocket on her pc to download music, streams movies via netflix and various other outlets...thats it for her...it was all over 3G data connection...i called sprint to find out wat the deal was and they straight told me the sites and protocols she used...they also told me that yes data is unlimited unless u use it to stream or download things...had them push me up to higher dept manager and i complained that the 3G speed was so slow, .5 dl, and they told me that is perfectly normal and fine, you dont need anything faster to web browse...i am still furious over this...i had her unroot her phone so we wouldnt be canceled...i am still in shock that this happened...they said she was using over 5Gb a month for 3 consecutive months...
Her problem is sharing the connection. I have used over 10 gig a month with netflix, hbo go. But I don't share the connection.one month I used almost 20 gigs.
It could be the fact that shes using a P2P software to download music. MP3 Rocket is very similar to Limewire.
I'm not going to go into a whole thing here, but I think that you could stand to take a step back and look at this situation objectively. Do you think it's reasonable to be doing P2P over 3G with an unpaid for wireless tether and not expect any flack from Sprint over it?
Hell, I don't really appreciate it as another Sprint user. Do your P2P at home, please.

Unfortunately, it's users like your wife that are accelerating Sprint's justification in supporting some people within Sprint for the need to switch from going from an unlimited data plan to a tiered data plan, like the other carriers. Because of that, I don't think you're going to get much sympathy on this board.

They can boot you if you use 300mb of roaming data over 3 months. That much I know.

And Sprint should because they have to pay Verizon (or whatever company's tower it is) for the overage.

Read -> Sprint changing a few things... again.

Getting rid of the "premier customer", returns go from 30 to 14 days, upgrade moves from 22 to 20 months BUT upgrade fee goes from 18 to 36..... all these changes are probly because of the new iphone too.... f*ck sprint and the rest of em.

that was announced a month ago lol

i like sprint (for now), dont get me wrong. but they are slowly hiking prices and axing services. they just got rid of unlimited 4g hotspot.... i think its only a matter of time before unlimited data is a thing of the past.

I'm not too sure about that. Mainly because every commercial i see for them is the
"We are sprint, we are truly unlimited" IMHO that's the only thing sprint has going for them, until the new iPhone comes out.
Sprint is still better than the alternatives though. Good customer service, awesome phones, etc. Everyone else has already done all this junk and gone to tiered plans so I'm happy that Sprint has kept their service as is for so long

I agree, if you find a better service at Sprint's prices, let me know, I'll be upgrading soon.

Is there really anyone that uses unlimited hotspot? I can't honestly imagine someone just tethering their laptop, gaming device, ect with their phone ALL day. The only thing that bothers me with the premier loss is return policy.
It is bs. I signed up for unlimited. I should get unlimited. If I spend anymore I might as well just get internet in my house instead of phone. What is this power trip all the carrier's seem to be on? The power to giveth, the power to take away? The power to cancel my service is what they'll get. I don't understand why sprint would make a move for the iphone and sacrifice the biggest advantage that no other carrier provides. That in my mind would be the gold mine and I would squat on it. Unless they are all acting together to gain greater profit from the consumer because they are all not happy with the percentages, it makes no sense. It does make sense however that they would all drop like dominos to the power of apple. After all, they have as much money saved up as our entire government. Tell me that isn't f'd up. Tell me a company like that can't do whatever they want and manipulate the system. I'm sure if we new everything we would pull out our guns to stop it. Die for it. But, who will ever know. Our worst enemy will be loved like family due to secrets and manipulation as we all suffer unrecognized poverty and enslavement. But, we are many.... and the day will come.

Wifi tether 8 hours a day will I get caught?

I need to add a dedicated wifi internet to my work van. The sprint internet hotspot is too much 34.99 for only 2gb. If I add a line to my family plan for 19.99 + 10 for premium data, get a new phone, then use my old rooted evo as a dedicated wifi hotspot for unlimited 3g internet for 8 hours a day, would I get caught and have my whole family plan canceled?
I'd say no, but certainly no one can give you a for sure answer.
I'd say even with 8 hours of web surfing, data usage should still be reasonable, and considering Sprint only seems to be going after the absolute offenders (gathered from what people are using (data), and not having problems) I'd assume you should be okay.
I really don't think anyone can give you a guarantee, but if I were to be a betting man, or in your same situation, I would do it.
I would say no as long as you don't go overboard. There's a huge difference between tethering to browse the web, update files and whatnot vs tethering to watch netflix, play ps3/xbox 360/Wii, etc.
However, don't take my word for it as I may be a betting man yet I still haven't won the powerball yet.

According to Dan Hesse, "unlimited" is truely unlimited.... Or maybe not...
I tether alot on my secondary line and my dad does on his second line and we use an average of 200 - 250gb a month between 4 lines and sprint never says a word about it our secondary lines are our primary internet connections for work unlimited data is unlimited data and u can use a proxy to make desktop data appear as mobile only with out a lot of speed loss, we both use GPS at least 2 hrs a day 5 days a week sometimes more depending on where we drive for work
We are legion, for we are many.
You'll be okay as long as that seems to be your normal usage. If you only use 2gb a month for 6 months on a line and then jump to 30gb a month it will get you noticed.

We started out kinda low but when we first got sprint we had Nokia 6xxx models with swappable face plates and over the years as the phones advanced our data increased when we got treos the data went way up and every upgrade just kept getting higher and higher til we got where we are now
We are legion, for we are many.

You would be surprised, I used my Evo to play MW3 and BF3 after an hour I had used less that 100mb.

Absolutely false. Online gaming would use up 100kb in a few seconds, not an hour...

Ok and when was the last time you tried this? It was months ago, but I have done this.
also kb was supposed to be mb. I don't remember the exact number, It may have actually been closer to 50 or less.
Its actually a lot less than you think it is.
Scratch that.

You see the poster put KB instead of MB and I'm assuming that's why hes answering not possible.
I use about 40-50mb range for an hour playing fps'.

Not saying I haven't either. I played Uncharted 3 multiplayer via tether. It was faster than my DSL connection. Then I saw the light and switched to Comcast. Still, it amazes some people that you can tether a phone to a game console to get your game on.
Sorry for derailing the thread.

Verizon and AT&T GS3 won't have 50GB Dropbox!

http://www.droid-life.com/2012/06/0...-of-50gb-dropbox-promo-for-samsungs-galaxy-s3
As expected, VZW and ATT had to screw the users somehow
No surprise there.....US phones that are released worldwide are ALWAYS lacking features and bonuses that the rest of the world receives
Just came to post this. Such crap! I'm beginning to aggressively hate Verizon more and more each day.
Would we be able to "hack" ourselves around this road block?

I'm sure the reason for this is the recently announced Dropbox video streaming. Now its very easy to upload all your media to the 50GB space, then stream it whenever you want without having to sync/download. It's like Google Music for videos, except it uses 10x the bandwidth.
Carriers are NOT happy about that because they can't charge you for it. Both VZW and ATT have lots of people with grandfathered unlimited data, and most who never come close to the bandwidth caps. So they are trying to prevent this.
This reminds me of when I opened my HOX and the beats headphones weren't there!
Stupid ATT! I

Not supporting at&t but HTC didn't put beats headphones on the international one x as well. They said they won't be doing that going forward.
Interesting to see what sprint and tmobile do with sgs3 dropbox.

HTC stopped including Beats headphones with their phones a few months back. That's across their entire catalog not just in the US.
While this would not have stopped me from purchasing the phone, I'm pretty frustrated and feel cheated because Verizon decided to drop something that the phone was presumed to come with, and without notifying customers whatsoever that they opted out of the otherwise standard promotion.

This doesn't make any sense to me. Are you saying that accessing dropbox data doesn't count against your monthly bandwidth total? I find that hard to believe.

If that's Verizon's thinking it makes me question what percentage of their customer base still has the unlimited plans. While people with unlimited plans can abuse something like this I have to believe that the people who don't have unlimited far outweigh those that do. Furthermore 50GB of easily accessible storage seems like a good way to induce people into data overages.
Not sure if anyone saw this. If you purchase a S3, Dropbox is offering 50gb of storage for free for 2 years. If you purchase a HTC One X you get 25gb of storage for free for 2 years. So you can tell Verizon and AT&T to stuff it because Dropbox is being the nice guys here.

Oh so sorry. Didn't even read the first link. I know AT&T is evil, but I didn't think Verizon was like that. I hope Rogers doesn't pull an AT&T and Verizon on us.
I think we should protest against this. I'm definitely going to ask about this, and if Sprint/TMobile had any sense they would advertise this.
There's little chance this decision will be reversed but we must fight.
Ok ATT One X gets the 25GB promotion but not the SGS3? Wow can't even say how much i hate all carriers...they control too many things. Im happy to have the international version and ill drop by their store flaunting my sgs3 and show my middle finger to them

All kidding aside, it would have been nice.

Same here. Due to Dropbox's shady business practices and ever changing ToS, I never planned on using them.
