Hey all.
Accidentally dropped my N1 today and funnerly enough i dropped it on carpet however its kitchen floor and hard... only from a distance of 3ft id say.
Now i cant hear people when they phone me, they hear me fine.
Camera doesnt work.
LED doesnt work.
Not good =(
Theres no signs of damage visually looking at it.
So can only leave 1 thing to do...
Going to strip it down see if i can find out whats wrong if anything loose.
What people think?
Did you ask if you can get warranty on it?
You might be able to get it repaired under warranty. Even if unlocked, if you are nice and knowledgeable to the right Google rep, then HTC rep (you must call Google first for approval, I found that out last time I did an exchange) There is no physical damage, and I doubt that that fall should have caused any issues. I would suspect that there was a faulty part/solder joint that is causing issues since the fall. Of course you can't tell them it was dropped though. And it might be good to restore it to stock software as well.
Kind of too late now took the void sticker off
Also noticed the charging light doesnt work either.
The loud speaker does...
This would have been hard to get warranty replaced. Too many issues make it look obvious. It's one thing to call up and say "my camera broke" is one thing. But to have a list of issues, "yeah my camera, charge light, ear piece, speaker, and LED" all stopped working. Good luck trying to get HTC on board with that one
It sounds like every broken function you mentioned is located on the small PCB at the top of the phone (cf the ifixit teardown).
Maybe it's just one of the connectors from the main PCB to the one at the top that got dislodged?
If its broken and no warranty....I got dibs on the shell!
Well, The speaker began making crackly death sounds in my epic. From what I've seen via google search and here on the forums, It isn't entirely uncommon.
I've tinkered with some electronics before so i decided to avoid the whole going back to stock thing and picked up a speaker on ebay and replaced it. Along the way i decided to pick apart the failed bit. Took a few pictures but I am unsure of the cause of problems since i damaged the speaker prying the metal cover off. But I figure that one of the corners of the cone is getting popped inward and not letting the speaker do its thing.
If anyone else happens to have a failed/ noisy speaker and cares to take it apart please take a picture or two. I am simply curious as to if the corners are just creasing themselves inward somehow.

I just swapped one of my Epics out a couple of weeks ago because of this issue.

I would have of just gone to sprint. But it seemed easier to me to just get the speaker off of ebay for 13 bucks and have an excuse to pop open the back cover. And I am le lazy when it came to going back to stock. Strange there are no void stickers of any sort on the thing though.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem... Samsung tried to blame the issue on Sprint haha!
But, no I don't feel comfortable taking the speaker out and replacing it... =/ good luck if you can figure it out though!

If I can find a speaker on Ebay, I will certainly give it a shot. This distortion is really bugging me. If I turn it up, it sounds like crap. If I turn it down, I get no ringtone, so I miss calls.
I got the same issue. I thought it was related to eb13.

glad to see im not the only one with this issue. my speaker sound like ass! unfortunately im not hardware savy enough to gut my epic but im gonna try and get my buddy at the repair center to see if he can fix it for me at his place instead of having to flash to stock to get it fixed then reflashing everything.
I always assumed it was an improper grounding issue, not the speaker itself. Different firmwares and ROMS have produced different results, so I have my doubts about the speaker being the issue.
Ya, mine is "blown" too... but it happened one day while I was at work... on silent. I was also kinda thinking it has more to do with software than hardware... but it hasn't fixed itself yet and it's been almost 2 weeks.
Looks like I might be doing the Odin thing soon, thank goodness for TEP.
Well, mine started to sound blown too. It happened overnight, I wasnt even using the speaker. Im farked too because I dont have insurance on this thing. Is this a software issue or what?

Just for the record, if your wire wont attach again, its because the technicians have a special tool to pop in on and off.
If your speaker isn't working, take it into a repair center. If they can fix it in store and it's under warranty, it will cost you $35. If you have insurance, then it should be no cost. The store I went to was cool about custom roms and rooting, was even asking me about it.The store I went to was not a corporate store as there are no corporate stores in the area that do repairs.
Forgot to mention that if they can't fix it in store, they will send to Samsung and Samsung will send a refurbished model. So in that sense, it may be a good idea to Odin.

I was hoping it would be a software issue but no amount of flashing back to stock would fix it. It started when my alarm went off one morning. Started out fine then turned to crackly death sounds all at once.
So far so good on the replacement speaker however.

yup, exactly how mine malfunctioned. I set the alarm, worked when i set it, then woke up to a gawd awfull crackly noise, and the speaker was blown.
Since i don't have TEP, should i just try and buy it and replace it myself or go back to stock and have the techs look at it at my sprint store?
I am experincing the "blowing" or "bursting" speakers, too, all of a sudden. I am on Bonsai 4.0.1, but I experienced that on stock ROM, too. I wish we can find a solid solution to this intriguing issue.

It might not actually be blown!
Long time reader, first time poster.
Ok, here is what I discovered about the Epic speaker. Like everyone else here I had my speaker die the same way, suddenly was distorted at any normal volume and no sound when you turned the volume to low, after awhile it just up and quit.
One thing i did discover was the if I tapped the speaker module it would start working again but blown sounding, so I thought "hmmm, seems like a loose connection". Got bored the other night and decided to take the speaker module out and see if I could spot a loose connector. No, no such luck, so after tearing the speaker module apart and playing with it, I narrowed it down to a bad solder joint in the ?diode? array under the red goo. when i would flex the cable it the speaker would suddenly start working again normally (no distortion, nice loud volume).
Now, as near as I can tell, Samsung is only using 2 leads of the connector hence the diode array (best guess due to the wiring pattern), voltage one way and the speaker plays, voltage the other way and the vibration motor runs. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Unfortunately, I cannot say if this is a permanent fix or not, my diodes appear to have taken some damage due to me continuing playing around with the speaker module while it was on (Either cumulative from running it messed up, or maybe I shorted them while I was poking around; but the speaker volume decreased gradually over time, no distortion though). But I do know for awhile everything was working fine, and my speaker worked like it was supposed to.
If any of you have the same problem, and can manage small surface mount work, this might be a way to save a few $$ or get it working again in short order since the only replacement speakers in can find right now appear to be coming out of Hong Kong with a long delivery time.
Hope this helps someone. Thanks for all the help that you guys have given me over the years.
As in everything in life, YMMV.
Hmm, I did not think to check out the wires while i had it out. I no longer have the broken part so if i encounter the issue again i know where to start looking.
Thanks!
I had the same problem. Thankfully i have best buy black tie insurance.

I have an interesting issue with my wife's TF101. The sound cuts out when you have the device tilted at more than 45 degrees. It works great when it is standing upright. I checked around and found others had the problem, and I already tested squeezing the sides to determine if the issue was a connection in the speakers. The squeezing did not help, so I am not keen on taking it apart to insert more padding. Is anyone else having this problem?
Well judging from the teardown pictures, squeezing down the affected area doesn't really rule out a bad connection between the speaker I think. When you squeeze it down it wouldn't really be re-inforcing the connection. The only reason this made sense on the TF201 was because their Wi-Fi board was connected to the mainboard by pressured pogo pins, this doesn't appear to be the case here.
Furthermore what if the broken connection was not at the speaker connection to the mainboard but in another area? What if it was a broken trace on a connecting part of the PCB? Again, squeezing doesn't rule anything out. What if something is shorting out?
The only practical alternative is that your wife's TF101 has been bit by the poor speaker quality and the speaker is dying. It's not uncommon to see people complain that the speaker died and they had to RMA it, I suspect it's happening here. Realistically there's nothing you can do at home on the software or hardware side of things, unless you want to risk taking it apart. All you have left is to do an RMA and if I were you I would have it done.
Sorry. Hopefully the RMA turns out well.
Thanks, man. I figured that but was hoping for another option on here. Boo!
Hi
I'm living in Italy and i have the same problem, I sent in assistance (czech repubblic)the tf101 10 days ago with rma not having heard, today i call, they told me is not covered under warranty and possibly pad fell to the ground!!!!!
The tf101 when I sent was perfect without a scratch, has only 1 months of life!!!
I protested, but they told me to wait to send the email from the assistance and with the budget to pay for repair, that will give evidence about....
I'll let you know as soon as news.
Massimo
Well, only had my SII a couple of months and the headphone jack is goofed lol, still works, but if the headphone plug is pushed to the right, then it cuts out and crackles etc. Tried cleaning it with the Q-Tip method, but no go
It's well under Warranty, but I just cant bear to be without it for a day lol, and it will take at least two weeks to get fixed, so I'm gonna replace it myself. Got the part off eBay (cheap enough) and ain't lookin forward to opening this thing up, but it's the lesser of two evils in my book.
I very rarely listen to anything outside, but use it all the time before sleeping, so I guess somethings happened that way? lol Still, I'm not a careless guy, so I dunno why its easily broken?
I may post a little vid of me wrecking the phone further if anyone's interested lol.
that's something i wouldnt mind seeing, or even just a few pics of major steps.
while i havent had it happen to me yet with this phone ive had a few past ones get this issue and it would be nice to have a reference should my s2 need a fix
please post pics of it, similar issue happened to my cousins laptop, the ring fell out, still worked when pushed to the right as you can see the connections, placed a heavy object on it, it stopped working one day so he got another piece from his mic, tried tin foil on it, didnt work
Hi, I made an account here as I'm hoping someone can help me. About an hour ago, I dropped my phone down the toilet and quickly dived in to retrieve it. I switched it off immediately and took the sim card out and dried it. I shook the phone to try get the water out as I had no rice. The good news it's still working but the bad news the ear speaker is broke. I cannot hear anyone if I make calls but if I put them on loudspeaker I can. Also a green LED light has appeared and won't disappear anyone know what that's about?
I wanna replace my ear speaker ASAP but can't find any to buy online (I'm from the UK) so can anyone link me to a site where I can buy one?
Thanks for your help...

dont panic,,,,place your phone in a rice bag for 2 complete days, the phone must be off.
2$ for a rice bag is less then a return!!!!
are you sure about this? I was putting on a screen protector and accidentally pushed the water into the earpiece. Now everyone is quiet. Do you think the rice trick will work? 2 whole days? Man I dont have another phone with a microsim slot.

U can as well get a sim card adapter which fits the micro sim, nano sim and also costs very less if its available where you stay.
Thanks for the reply, a little bit of an update.
Initially the ear speaker was broken and I could not hear people when I was on the phone but hours after the incident it has changed. When people call me I can now hear them but they cannot hear me UNLESS I put them on loudspeaker. What do I need to replace?
this same thing just happened to me about an hour or so ago also the loud speaker works but the ear speaker does not work. mine is currently in a bag of rice with the sim card tray out if the rice trick does not work is there a way to replace the speaker? Or will Google or LG possibly fix it for a fee? I know it is obviously not a warranty issue since it is my own fault it fell in the toilet but do they offer a repair service of some kind?
Not sure about the OP but an update for mine...after 2 days of sitting in rice my ear speaker has started working again. After one day in the rice it had started working but the volume was really low then today I pulled it out and it was working like new

similar problem
Hi to everyone, ihave a similar problem with my nexus 4. My ear speaker sometimes stops working since I have updated my phone to 5.0. Then I tried cm11 and 5.0.1 and everytike i had the same problem. Does this sound like a HW problem or is it is SW problem?
