Hi, I made an account here as I'm hoping someone can help me. About an hour ago, I dropped my phone down the toilet and quickly dived in to retrieve it. I switched it off immediately and took the sim card out and dried it. I shook the phone to try get the water out as I had no rice. The good news it's still working but the bad news the ear speaker is broke. I cannot hear anyone if I make calls but if I put them on loudspeaker I can. Also a green LED light has appeared and won't disappear anyone know what that's about?
I wanna replace my ear speaker ASAP but can't find any to buy online (I'm from the UK) so can anyone link me to a site where I can buy one?
Thanks for your help...

dont panic,,,,place your phone in a rice bag for 2 complete days, the phone must be off.
2$ for a rice bag is less then a return!!!!
are you sure about this? I was putting on a screen protector and accidentally pushed the water into the earpiece. Now everyone is quiet. Do you think the rice trick will work? 2 whole days? Man I dont have another phone with a microsim slot.

U can as well get a sim card adapter which fits the micro sim, nano sim and also costs very less if its available where you stay.
Thanks for the reply, a little bit of an update.
Initially the ear speaker was broken and I could not hear people when I was on the phone but hours after the incident it has changed. When people call me I can now hear them but they cannot hear me UNLESS I put them on loudspeaker. What do I need to replace?
this same thing just happened to me about an hour or so ago also the loud speaker works but the ear speaker does not work. mine is currently in a bag of rice with the sim card tray out if the rice trick does not work is there a way to replace the speaker? Or will Google or LG possibly fix it for a fee? I know it is obviously not a warranty issue since it is my own fault it fell in the toilet but do they offer a repair service of some kind?
Not sure about the OP but an update for mine...after 2 days of sitting in rice my ear speaker has started working again. After one day in the rice it had started working but the volume was really low then today I pulled it out and it was working like new

similar problem
Hi to everyone, ihave a similar problem with my nexus 4. My ear speaker sometimes stops working since I have updated my phone to 5.0. Then I tried cm11 and 5.0.1 and everytike i had the same problem. Does this sound like a HW problem or is it is SW problem?

So I dropped my phone in the toilet which is awesome. After soaking it in bag of rice for pretty much 24 hours I can now:
Turn it on.
Recieve phone calls
Make calls
Generally use the touch screen and all buttons.
I am getting this weird error where it thinks there are head phones plugged in at all times. So luckily I'm using Cynanogenmod7 and have it set to ring to speaker at all times or else it would never ring. Because of this I have to either talk on speaker which is all good, or actually plug in the headset. Then I notice this weird feeling my ear... it is shocking me !!
Does anyone know enough of taking this apart to disable to headphone jack? Or to walk me through a tear down to see if I can fix this?
Sorry but thats HELLA FUNNY!!!

I had this issues with a client's iPhone 3GS.. it is actually applying a little current to your ear when you plug in the earphones and thats why you're feeling that. I tore down the phone and replaced the entire earphone flex cable assembly and everything was fine. I used a ifixit guide, but I don't see one for this phone. You can always replace all the water sensors on the phone and take it into a TMO store and hope for the best.
Related note: Sorry to hear that bro, GL with fixing it.

my evo is a lil over a month old and the speaker is blown...the loud speaker in the back of the phone...when i have the volume up it sounds terrible...like a blown house/car speaker...is it hard to change? or should i unroot the phone and take it to sprint?
Yeah that's what I would do. When I had my front earpiece blown I took it to the sprint store and they replaced it while I waited. I would bring a book, because it took over an hour.
so i do have to have it unrooted to get it fixed?

Its not hard to change but the rear speakers seem to be of cheap quality. If you reallly want a good sound output try looking up the x mini 2 portable speaker. As for the rear speaker all you need is a t5 torx driver bit to open the screws on the back.
In my store we don't even look into whether it's rooted or not unless it's a software issue. I wouldn't worry about unrooting it. And as far as repair time, it takes me about 5 minutes to do it...so I don't know why it would take someone an hour. you just unscrew the back housing, pull the old one out, pop the new one in, screw it back together, and you're on your way.
I'd still unroot it just in case they look, couldn't hurt and it would suck if they flagged your account because of it.

Mine is blown as well, it's really annoying with HTC. My hero, about 2-3 months and the speaker blew out.. I used pandora on it over that speaker a lot tho so once I bought my EVO I decided not to play music or anything on the speaker at all... just the ringtones and things like that... and it still effin blew in about 2 months and has been since.
I'm not really wanting to unroot and go through all the hassle but I would really like it fixed =\
**edit** After a quick google search, replacing the speaker looks really easy.. I might just give it a go myself. Where is a good place to get a few tools like the t5 driver? And do you guys know a good place to get a replacement speaker?

You can get the screwdriver at Sears and probably a Lowes/home depot
Sent from my Evo while i should be working
Lowes has a kobalt precison screwdriver set by the screwdrivers on the wall for about $7. Set comes with t4,t5,t6,t7,t8,t9,10 and t15. You can get the speaker off ebay. Same speaker thats in most htc devices. 5 minutes to install very easy if you dont want to unroot and dont have the repair plan.
You can get a replacement speaker form this guy for about $12.00. Or you can order a 5 pack of them for about $50.00 from globaldirect.com.
I'm not calling u a lier but he does have a point... I had a moment b4 and I took it to sprint to get an update and when I got there it took two hrs... and they bricked it on top of that and had to replace it.

PowerAMP has audio controls that could cause clipping of the sound (the distortion you hear). I'd try adjusting the EQ settings.

I haven't used this guy yet, but as my speaker is getting worse by the day I will shortly. I did a bunch of research on the net though, and a quite a few folks have ordered from him with good results. He orders the speakers from global direct (they have a 5 speaker minimum order), then he marks them up a little and resells them one at a time.

**edit** Nevermind, I see what you were saying. I just ordered one from him.. didn't like using paypal because I have a payment dispute currently not settled with them. They better not try to jack my credit card info, even tho I used the "don't have an account" option..
I'm having the same problem with both the rear speaker and the main speaker. I called Sprint and told me I would have to take it in. The closest repair facility is about 30 minutes away and with my current work schedule I wouldn't be able to get over there for a while. Called back and got a very knowledgeable tech who is having a replacement unit sent out.
Hope this doesn't happen again. I rarely have my phone at full volume, never play music over the rear speaker.

Well, The speaker began making crackly death sounds in my epic. From what I've seen via google search and here on the forums, It isn't entirely uncommon.
I've tinkered with some electronics before so i decided to avoid the whole going back to stock thing and picked up a speaker on ebay and replaced it. Along the way i decided to pick apart the failed bit. Took a few pictures but I am unsure of the cause of problems since i damaged the speaker prying the metal cover off. But I figure that one of the corners of the cone is getting popped inward and not letting the speaker do its thing.
If anyone else happens to have a failed/ noisy speaker and cares to take it apart please take a picture or two. I am simply curious as to if the corners are just creasing themselves inward somehow.

I would have of just gone to sprint. But it seemed easier to me to just get the speaker off of ebay for 13 bucks and have an excuse to pop open the back cover. And I am le lazy when it came to going back to stock. Strange there are no void stickers of any sort on the thing though.

If I can find a speaker on Ebay, I will certainly give it a shot. This distortion is really bugging me. If I turn it up, it sounds like crap. If I turn it down, I get no ringtone, so I miss calls.
I got the same issue. I thought it was related to eb13.

glad to see im not the only one with this issue. my speaker sound like ass! unfortunately im not hardware savy enough to gut my epic but im gonna try and get my buddy at the repair center to see if he can fix it for me at his place instead of having to flash to stock to get it fixed then reflashing everything.
I always assumed it was an improper grounding issue, not the speaker itself. Different firmwares and ROMS have produced different results, so I have my doubts about the speaker being the issue.
Ya, mine is "blown" too... but it happened one day while I was at work... on silent. I was also kinda thinking it has more to do with software than hardware... but it hasn't fixed itself yet and it's been almost 2 weeks.
Looks like I might be doing the Odin thing soon, thank goodness for TEP.
Well, mine started to sound blown too. It happened overnight, I wasnt even using the speaker. Im farked too because I dont have insurance on this thing. Is this a software issue or what?

Just for the record, if your wire wont attach again, its because the technicians have a special tool to pop in on and off.
If your speaker isn't working, take it into a repair center. If they can fix it in store and it's under warranty, it will cost you $35. If you have insurance, then it should be no cost. The store I went to was cool about custom roms and rooting, was even asking me about it.The store I went to was not a corporate store as there are no corporate stores in the area that do repairs.
Forgot to mention that if they can't fix it in store, they will send to Samsung and Samsung will send a refurbished model. So in that sense, it may be a good idea to Odin.

I was hoping it would be a software issue but no amount of flashing back to stock would fix it. It started when my alarm went off one morning. Started out fine then turned to crackly death sounds all at once.
So far so good on the replacement speaker however.

yup, exactly how mine malfunctioned. I set the alarm, worked when i set it, then woke up to a gawd awfull crackly noise, and the speaker was blown.
Since i don't have TEP, should i just try and buy it and replace it myself or go back to stock and have the techs look at it at my sprint store?
I am experincing the "blowing" or "bursting" speakers, too, all of a sudden. I am on Bonsai 4.0.1, but I experienced that on stock ROM, too. I wish we can find a solid solution to this intriguing issue.

It might not actually be blown!
Long time reader, first time poster.
Ok, here is what I discovered about the Epic speaker. Like everyone else here I had my speaker die the same way, suddenly was distorted at any normal volume and no sound when you turned the volume to low, after awhile it just up and quit.
One thing i did discover was the if I tapped the speaker module it would start working again but blown sounding, so I thought "hmmm, seems like a loose connection". Got bored the other night and decided to take the speaker module out and see if I could spot a loose connector. No, no such luck, so after tearing the speaker module apart and playing with it, I narrowed it down to a bad solder joint in the ?diode? array under the red goo. when i would flex the cable it the speaker would suddenly start working again normally (no distortion, nice loud volume).
Now, as near as I can tell, Samsung is only using 2 leads of the connector hence the diode array (best guess due to the wiring pattern), voltage one way and the speaker plays, voltage the other way and the vibration motor runs. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Unfortunately, I cannot say if this is a permanent fix or not, my diodes appear to have taken some damage due to me continuing playing around with the speaker module while it was on (Either cumulative from running it messed up, or maybe I shorted them while I was poking around; but the speaker volume decreased gradually over time, no distortion though). But I do know for awhile everything was working fine, and my speaker worked like it was supposed to.
If any of you have the same problem, and can manage small surface mount work, this might be a way to save a few $$ or get it working again in short order since the only replacement speakers in can find right now appear to be coming out of Hong Kong with a long delivery time.
Hope this helps someone. Thanks for all the help that you guys have given me over the years.
As in everything in life, YMMV.
Hmm, I did not think to check out the wires while i had it out. I no longer have the broken part so if i encounter the issue again i know where to start looking.
Thanks!
I had the same problem. Thankfully i have best buy black tie insurance.

Hey, guys. I know there are dozens of threads talking about that, but mine is quite specific. First, the toilet disaster highlights one-to-one:
- phone sitting by the sink, which is close to toilet
- stupid movement and there it was, Skype was on.
- took 3 seconds to ignore all the human dignity I'd had and took the SGS from the water
- removed a crappy silicone cover (this one saved me from a more serious accident) very fast and removed the battery as fast as
- towel, paper-towel, rags
- rice bowl
- youtube video showing disassembly instructions (pretty easy)
- contact cleaner
- rice bowl again
It worked perfectly 24 hours later! Screen on, sound ok... very easy device to open.
Everything was fine until I accidentally hit the voice search and the "sound level meter" didn't move.
Microphone is not working since then. Doesn't work for calls, video with sound, audio note... It works fine with the stock earphone though.
Yes, I restored to factory settings.
Yes, I reflashed and reinstalled the ROM.
When I BLOW (with my mouth) into the mic, nothing happens. But when I SUCK it, the michophone seems to "catch" all the noise. Is this a signal of hope?
I opened it again and sprayed a good contact cleaner, right into the mic. No changes.
ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED!!!
Phone was placed on the sink with "Skype on". Hmmmm

Did you ever think about to replace the mic?? If ya say its easy to open the phone then you wont have problems to replace the mic I actually dont think its too expansive for ya. So actually its funny to read but I fell with ya. But you shouldnt use skype on the toilet my phone is waiting outside of the bath room, when I'm makin the big deal on the toilet xD
good luck dude
24 hours is way to short to remove water stuck between board and smd components. I think you fired it up to soon. Electronics dont repair themselves, once broken you need to replace parts to get things going again.
Only luck or a wallet can save you now im afraid.
Aww dude no way !!!.
I have had my fair share of phones falling into the loo, Luckily not with my SGS, but with my tocco and my spica.
My tocco survived after leaving it dry on the radiator for a day (on low low temperature)
My spica survived but needed a new screen. which was surprisingly cheap (not genuine part)
Just for my own amusement, Was it a number one or a number two you was doing at the time ?
Funny comments, But serious matter. Take their advice and leave it dry out a little more, You could of made it worse by powering it up. But lets not jump to conclusions just yet,
If drying it out for longer dont work. See if you can make a bit of cash by selling it for parts on ebay or similar.
Oh and is it on a contract ? if so do you have insurance ? or are you close to a renewal ?
Good luck, Hope you get a good outcome

Obviously you will have to mention the water damage.
But some people do buy broken / water damaged stuff.
Might not get a lot of money but it could be better than throwing it in the bin
My phone got drowned in the bottom of bag with a leaking water bottle, similar thing, phone worked but the mic wasn't 100% and the center button did not work at all. Purchased a replacement 3 button membrane they call it off ebay for $25 from UK. The mic is built onto this membrane. Funnily enough button started to work the day before it arrived but I will still replace the membrane just to know the mic is 100% as sometimes it comes across scratchy on the other end.
Hope all goes well for you.

Last time I flooded a phone (lake, beer, boat, he he), I used a food dehydrator. 24 hours in that gadget and all was well. Just last week my brother jumped into the water with his iPhone in the pocket. Same procedure and 24 hours later his phone lives.
My 9 mo. old son slobbered all over my phone today, his spit/saliva went through every hole possible, immediately i tested every function and only the earpiece stopped working, by earpiece i mean I can not hear anyone when on the phone, unless of course i plug in head phones OR put it on Loud Speaker.
I've seen a ear piece sell for $20 on ebay
not sure if this is the right part though

My 9 mo. old son slobbered all over my phone today, his spit/saliva went through every hole possible, immediately i tested every function and only the earpiece stopped working, by earpiece i mean I can not hear anyone when on the phone, unless of course i plug in head phones OR put it on Loud Speaker.
I've seen a ear piece sell for $20 on ebay

Looking to repair this and resell it
replaced it with a HTC One
anyone?
That is the correct earpiece for the N4. I can confirm this because I have two spare earpieces somewhere in my closet. Just in case you didn't know you will need a T5 torque screwdriver and small Philip screwdriver to open the device.

Lucky, want to sell one? Curious as to why you would have 2 N4 earpieces laying around
Yes i already have it opened up, took the shield off and try airing it out with a air can hoping to dry up the moisture or something.
my vibration also stopped working

Long story. Lol. I thought my earpiece was broken but I found out I was not on the right baseband. and so I bought a pair on eBay for nothing..
