USB host mode? - EVO Shift 4G General

Has there been anymore movement on USB Host mode for HTC Evo Shift?
I know it's not the most popular phone, but I'd still like to see this feature!

As far as I know this has not been enabled yet on the Shift. I may be wrong, but I think it has to be enabled in the Kernel.

Yeah it is a kernel enabled feature... I can't promise anything...

From what I've gathered so far, you can plug in a thumb drive and it will read it... I'm still reading and researching how to get it enabled...

It would allow the phone to act as a "host", much like a USB port on a PC. This would allow your phone to access external storage (like a thumb drive or digital camera), USB accessories (like mice and keyboards) or transmit audio through the USB (for audiophiles who want to use their DACs and amplifiers).

It would be a nice feature, and really useful at times. You can achieve almost the same thing with Bluetooth enabled devices. But not nearly as quickly. Also with Bluetooth obviously both devices need to have Bluetooth. Plus all the BS that goes with it. USB Host Mode would make it considerably easier. Plug and play so to speak.

Biggest issue with usbhost is power. Most devices you'll. Need a powered usb hub to be able to power devices you plug in.

I was looking around, and they seem fairly reasonable price wise. Especially for how versatile it makes your device.

the epic has a keyboard
this is purely for battlebots and the usb missile launcher
seriously...the main purpose i think everyone would use this for is usb hard drives
beyond that...it becomes involved driver development
but i'm sure there are plenty of people who would love to have audio/video interfaces for external pro equipment or something
how about connecting directly to a modem via usb
another big one in my mind would be printers
i'd love to be able to print updated materials at a job site easily
i know this is just a doorway to a megaload of driver development
but i'm sure there is much already done for other android devices supporting this feature already that could easily be ported
Wondering if there is a hardware issue....does the chip support usb host mode?
sorry if i'm reviving a dead thread, but i too am highly interested in this. i would really like being able to use usb flash drives, maybe connect a camera, or even more complex devices like optical drives or external hard drives. granted, a lot of that is software-side, but i don't see why it wouldn't be possible to mount the drive(s) as another usb device like the onboard microsd slot.
input? comments? anything?
Honestly speaking, USB Storage is probably the only benefit the common user could get out of this, since the drivers are generic.
Printers would require CUPS, which isn't easy to configure. Someone would have to make an APP. Not to mention there's an App on Amazon today that lets you print.
Webcams can be finicky, and may require more hands-on terminal manipulation.
i wasn't really thinking of webcams, i was thinking more along the lines of using my epic to edit/upload the videos i take with my flip minoHD. thanks for the quick reply!

sorry but all im reading is that it will use the micro-usb port to mirror the phones images onto a monitor/tv it doesnt say anything about having a certain technology i refuse to call dibs on this one alongside this " instead of needing an extra HDMI or MHL port. Analogix's secret sauce is on a chip embedded in the jack portion of the cable and because it's based on DisplayPort technology, it can connect using HDMI, VGA, or DVI connections"
It might be software based. Can never put anything past a software solution.
Do you think that TV out is just going to magicly work when you plug in USB LOL
FYI your usb port is never outputting video lol. you would have to run some type of program to do it and that will use CPU power
When have you ever plugged usb into your PC and a message comes up "Would you like to mirror image on your screen?"

Possible solution to HDMI Out?

Hi all,
Whilst chilling with a friend he showed me a new gadget he'd purchased.
It was a wireless HDMI solution that used USB.
The USB stick, broadcasted the HDMI to a reciever, which in-turn sat by the TV with an ACTUAL HDMI cable plugged into the TV.
My first though was, would this work for my nexus? Putting the USB into the OTG cable?
I thought the only issue maybe drivers?
The device:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Q-Waves-Wireless-USB-HDMI-Extender/dp/B002RL9F38
Fair expensive on Amazon, but my friend picked one up at £40.
Is this a viable solution?
Delete please.
At best it would be usable for slideshows / presentations.
From my understanding there is insufficient bandwidth via USB2 to smoothly stream video at anything other than very low resolution.

Yeah, I may just take my Nexus up to the friends, get it all connected and see what happens.
Would any1 be interested in me testing it?
USB 2.0 is plenty fast enough for a compressed 1080p HD video stream. It is plenty fast for several of them simultaneously, frankly.
I suspect that the device uses a windows driver plus a PC application program... neither of which the N7 will have.

Then try it and let us know. I highly doubt it would work though. If video signals can be sent over the micro USB port, then ASUS would've just said the N7 supports MHL. Since MHL isn't supported, I doubt the video signals can be sent over the wire.

Dunno about this device, but I think USB s simply not fast enough for quality video. I had a Lenovo notebook with USB "docking" which was attached through USB. Along with external keyboard and mouse it also transfered video to external monitor. And there was visible difference then when using normal VGA/DVI. It kinda worked, but was annoying because it had problems with speed. So because of that experience I think USB is not viable solution for video. And I'm talking about displaying normal DESKTOP not video! With video it must be even worse.
Hey I don't know if it would work or not but I'm very interested in you testing it.

It's a USB device. If it has driver support, it'll work. There are USB 'video cards' that support "HD" resolutions. The trick is device support.

Just a spit-ball idea....what I use to stream content...the HTC media link works pretty well as a media streamer when it's plugged into your TV
Ima try this out and let you all know next time I'm around there I'll take my nexus !

Let's use that port!

Hi guys!
I know that USB type C can map to several devices (even VGA/HDMI).
How do we know which ones are supported?
I'd fancy buying a USB<->HDMI Adapter (smilar to the Slimport<>HDMI I have for my Nexus5).
Will it be supported?
It's not USB 3.1 so I don't know if all of those would still be supported.
In the reddit AMA the developers confirmed it would not have HDMI out. You could always mirror it with a chromecast though.
Then why USB Type-C if none of the goodies? Just for fast-charging and reversability?
Casting takes a lot of power and heat.
(Isn't losing video-out another downgrade?)

Well, quoting myself... Actually would the rendering at the device with dedicated hardware give up more heat than broadcasting via WiFi?
Which would take more power?
Allways believe that any kind of "air transmission" is quite power-consuming.

Yeah it is a downgrade. I never cared if a phone could stream HDMI before, but now that I'm seeing a 6P as way to carry a single device (no more tablet with HDMI + phone), it is disappointing. Plus, when I read about USB-C having so many capabilities, I was hoping the phone would include some of them instead of it just being a connector choice.
Strange choice leaving out the HDMI stuff etc. Don't understand it. I wonder if the 810 gets too hot outputting to HDMI.
I don't know if people would use stuff other than OTG or video-out. But it'd definitely be nice for some guys for other devices (even though most can be connected to OTG).
Ok... really just video-out
Casting generating less heat than rendering video... hmm..... no idea...

If you have ever done presentations using a micro-usb to HDMI cable, you know that this puts a lot of stress on the connector. And having to drag a cable all over the place is an inconvenience. This is with a Nexus 7 (2013). For me, the presence of WiFi Direct and hence Miracast is far more important. I find that with the Nexus 7 at least, Miracast works perfectly. I use an Actiontec Screenbeam Mini2 as a dongle. I am anticipatinf that the Nexus 6p will work as well, but we will see.

Possibilities of USB C on Nexus Devices?

We have seen that on Macbook air 1 USB type C port has been utilized not just for charging but also being used as display port as well using an external adapter.
Will Nexus 6P/5X have such functionality using an additional adapter or directly may be to connect to HDMI TVs or connect OTG drives?
No. Disabled.
OTG should work, HDMI will not. I'm interested to see if the Pixel C has HDMI enabled. I would expect it to.

It's not "disabled", just N6P doesn't have USB Type-C 3.1.
Could you please explain more?
In the Type-C spec (.zip found here http://www.usb.org/developers/docs/) it defines what pins and wires are used for what. In a Type-C port or cable there are 2 dedicated pins/wires for USB 2.0. For USB 3.1 communications there are dedicated shielded twisted pair wires used for high speed communication. To support Display Port/HDMI, the Type-C port switches the use of those high-speed data wires over to that kind of output. (I think they called this alternate mode.) Anyway, the Nexus devices only support the USB 2.0 mode. It is unclear to me which of these is the case, but it basically means that either the USB controller in the phone can't support it, or the physical pins in the port are missing to connect and use those high speed wires. (Or both.)
It is possible it is just disabled in software, but that doesn't quite make sense to me. Why include all the hardware you need to enable USB 3.1 speeds, HDMI output, and a slew of other features such as USB-PD... But simply choose not to enable them? Seems far more likely to me that the lower cost of the USB 2.0 only mode (less complex controller and port) were used instead.
Hope that helps.
