Hi all,
Whilst chilling with a friend he showed me a new gadget he'd purchased.
It was a wireless HDMI solution that used USB.
The USB stick, broadcasted the HDMI to a reciever, which in-turn sat by the TV with an ACTUAL HDMI cable plugged into the TV.
My first though was, would this work for my nexus? Putting the USB into the OTG cable?
I thought the only issue maybe drivers?

From my understanding there is insufficient bandwidth via USB2 to smoothly stream video at anything other than very low resolution.

Yeah, I may just take my Nexus up to the friends, get it all connected and see what happens.
Would any1 be interested in me testing it?
USB 2.0 is plenty fast enough for a compressed 1080p HD video stream. It is plenty fast for several of them simultaneously, frankly.
I suspect that the device uses a windows driver plus a PC application program... neither of which the N7 will have.

That was my first thought, but then I started blaggin myself saying, well if mice/keyboards/USB Sticks etc all work, why not this little USB?

Usb 2 has like a max of 2 gigabits. More than enough for 720 from what I can guess.

No offence, I don't give a crap about the speed of USB, nor whether it can stream in "HD" or not. All I want to know is if this would work with the N7.

Then try it and let us know. I highly doubt it would work though. If video signals can be sent over the micro USB port, then ASUS would've just said the N7 supports MHL. Since MHL isn't supported, I doubt the video signals can be sent over the wire.

Dunno about this device, but I think USB s simply not fast enough for quality video. I had a Lenovo notebook with USB "docking" which was attached through USB. Along with external keyboard and mouse it also transfered video to external monitor. And there was visible difference then when using normal VGA/DVI. It kinda worked, but was annoying because it had problems with speed. So because of that experience I think USB is not viable solution for video. And I'm talking about displaying normal DESKTOP not video! With video it must be even worse.
Hey I don't know if it would work or not but I'm very interested in you testing it.

It's a USB device. If it has driver support, it'll work. There are USB 'video cards' that support "HD" resolutions. The trick is device support.

Just a spit-ball idea....what I use to stream content...the HTC media link works pretty well as a media streamer when it's plugged into your TV
Ima try this out and let you all know next time I'm around there I'll take my nexus !

Hey I have a few questions which I would appreciate if answered.
1. Can the a500 output to a monitor via dvi? Is there something that would need to be enabled or not. I know it can output via HDMI.
2. Has anyone actually bricked their device to a state in which it cant be recovered, I know sc2k can usually recover the device with the UID, but has anyone got their device completely bricked to the extent in which the only option was warranty replacement.
3. Is anyone developing a way in which to or event bricking or an unbricking tool.

Not natively, no. If you can find a device that converts HDMI to DVI signal then you could use that, but I don't know if such a device even exists.

Okay I should of said I have the adapter but it doesn't seem to display on my monitor I guess output resolution needs to be changed

This has been asked several times before.you need a converter box. They are two different types of technology.
Thee also has been a few people that I heard sent there Tablets to acer to get unbricked. Not sure if they talked to seek or not thou.

Hi, Jeff.
I actually have tried what you've suggested a while back. While it does allow you to connect, it does not power up the dvi port on the monitor/tv. I think something like what erica_renee or WereCatf are mentioning is needed.
Unfortunately I cannot find this magical device anywhere (Well,,, I only searched a 'little'. No real dedication, sorrrry.). I have an older monitor (dvi) that I would love to run the tab on...
I believe (since you've hooked it up, tried it and it didn't work) that your computer monitor does not support 1080p output from the Acer. I'm not sure, it could even be 720p, but either way it appears your monitor doesn't support that or the frame rate from the Acer.
For some reason hdmi to dvi doesn't work I tried every possible combination on many monitors with various resolution strange tho.

Hmm well hope in the future there may be a way, for the bricking situation I know it'll be pretty much safe with cwm but there may be occurances where it fails.

I think it doesn't work like that... you have to have the tech on your phone (Mobility DisplayPort (MYDP) digital interface) it then allows uncompressed video/audio from a phone over display-port and also allows usb transfer modes

i dont get you guys it clearly says it uses the MICRO USB port on the mobile device i mean how much more clearer need it be regardless ive sent an email to analogix and will tell u guys what they say

You do realize that PSP is less than 1/3rd the Xperia PLAY's overall capability, right?
PSP also couldn't handle any form of graphical MMOs.

Thats because it used VNC. VNC lags on anything.

check the spec sheets. Also, notice that the Play has Dev units with HDMI out and they don't lag a little.
A bit off topic, but I don't think I ever posted this while I was analyzing the play for HDMI.

Now, I tore apart my Play (when I had it), and I can confirm that that chip is NOT on my retail r800i. This means that there is no "hidden" port or some unfilled solderpads that can be used to attach a microhdmi. There is NO support on the retail motherboard for it. You can't even buy the ADV7520 chip because there are no space on the retail motherboard for it.
There's no chip or hdmi port on the play I've watched dissasemblies of all types r800a,x,I

There is a solution where you connect to a bluetooth HDMI dongle using your bluetooth and its specific app to stream phone content onto the screen, I think it was mentioned on Engadget but I cannot seem to find the link for it.

so your dev unit theory is irrelevant because our plays contain none of the architecture to run this setup with hdmi.

I don't have a theory, as I don't care one bit about TV output of any kind. However, you mentioned that the PSP wasn't powerful enough to beam out content, which is not a problem in the Xperia Play (or Arc and Neo for that matter).
Why do people keep saying "the play has no HDMI transmitter" if you read the OP, with this cable the HDMI transmitter is built into the jack, the device does not need one

The adapter is probably accompanied with an app. Although the app would need root acces, atleast I think so.
whilst i think this would be an awesome piece of kit if it works as intended, im a little curious as to how it actually works, afaik the cpu sends its work to the gpu for output, the gpu processes it, and outputs it to the display....so how exactly does the usb port get the information from gpu...maybe easy with root access on one device...but making it work on a wide range of devices would be crazy hard.
im not gonna straight up bash this, because they have said its a vendor agnostic solution, so im assuming they have worked out some technical magic with no downsides to pull this off. I'm all for being proved wrong, i just want to see it in action.

First statement is a bit overstated.
By capability the gpu in the PSP has a fillrate of 30 million polygons/s
I believe our Adreno has 52 mil/s
Plus instead of the capability I believe it was the limitation of USB speeds that affected the computer mirroring software.

I've been reading quite a lot lately about (android) tablets because I want to buy one at last.
I managed to shrink my options to 2: Nexus 10 and Asus Transformer Pad Infinity.
After hard digging about the Infinity in the forums I decided to drop it and go with Nexus 10.
One of the reasons I want a tablet is to make a streamer on the go from it...
I want to connect it to my TV with a HDMI cable to stream some movies.
But from tons of the reviews I read, I only noticed one review mentioning the quality and stability of the streaming. And It wasn't positive.
So I am asking you guys (and girls), what's your experiences on using the tablet this way?

HDMI streaming works good. The picture quality is great; however, I do not get any audio through HDMI. This might be a cable issue. Not a big deal since you can output audio through the audio jack.

Although there is many threads on some issue when streaming via HDMI, like no sound and black stripes on the sides and flickering I was reading....
makes me kinda worry...

Works great on the N10. Don't buy an Asus tablet though. Their software is laggy and buggy as hell, and they don't support their devices. I had a TF201 and it was absolutely nothing but headaches. Stay away from Asus. You've been warned.

Well that's why I said I am choosing Nexus 10 over the Asus one... You are not the only one who suffered, and I read most of the complains people wrote.
I have other question though.
Since I lack the experience on the issue:
How does optical audio cable can be used with an HDMI cable to stream audio from the first and video from the second?
Asking because I have a receiver connected to my 5.1 audio set.
Does work, but mine struggles with higher bitrate 1080p movies over wifi.
There are bars but these may be able to be removed if you get rid of the 3 quick buttons at the bottom, not sure if this is possible with custom software.

Couldn't agree more. I tried out a TF700 from Amazon for a month, and during that period I had to exchange once from Amazon for a defect in the screen, then send the replacement in for warranty repair because of the same problem. Got it back from warranty 'repair' and it had the same problem in a different location of the screen. Returned them both to Amazon and bought a Nexus 10 from the Play store on launch day.
Couldn't be happier.
I was also amused that the rep claimed they had no prior reports of the screen/bezel problem, when the TF700 threads on here are filled with posts about it. And of course, if you've unlocked your bootloader (using the tool they provide) you have absolved them of any responsibility to repair manufacturing defects that passed through 'quality control' at their factory.

I know that Nexus 10 does not posses optical audio port (TOSLINK), so I was wondering what people that want to use this sort of audio output do? Withought forgetting that the HDMI cable is beeing used for the picture and not the sound...

Streaming works great here. I can tell you as a former infinity owner that the nexus 10 blows it out of the water...

Yes, I'd like to know that also. My previous tablet was a BB PlayBook and it had controls for when you were connected to HDMI that let you control the output resolution, whether audio was passed through etc.. Is there anything like this in Android?

Tried it but doesn't work with my rooted Nexus 10. The screen flashes and stays on instead of turning off.
I connected the Nexus 10 to my TV:
- stereo audio is ok
- bad picture quality (its resizing)
- big black borders at the left and right side
- wrong frame rate on TV - movies look very bad
for me its a no go. Its absolutely not worth it.
I think it certainly must be possible as toslink is digital audio and hdmi outputs digital audio as well. I don't think any conversion would be needed so all you need is someone who makes the cables and takes the audio pinouts from the hdmi and routes them to a toslink cable as well. Unfortunately there isn't exactly a massive demand for such a cable so either find someone who makes the cables or maybe trawl the hi-fi websites to see if anywhere would sell them.

I know that USB type C can map to several devices (even VGA/HDMI).
How do we know which ones are supported?
I'd fancy buying a USB<->HDMI Adapter (smilar to the Slimport<>HDMI I have for my Nexus5).
Will it be supported?
It's not USB 3.1 so I don't know if all of those would still be supported.
In the reddit AMA the developers confirmed it would not have HDMI out. You could always mirror it with a chromecast though.
Then why USB Type-C if none of the goodies? Just for fast-charging and reversability?
Casting takes a lot of power and heat.
(Isn't losing video-out another downgrade?)

Well, quoting myself... Actually would the rendering at the device with dedicated hardware give up more heat than broadcasting via WiFi?
Which would take more power?
Allways believe that any kind of "air transmission" is quite power-consuming.

Yeah it is a downgrade. I never cared if a phone could stream HDMI before, but now that I'm seeing a 6P as way to carry a single device (no more tablet with HDMI + phone), it is disappointing. Plus, when I read about USB-C having so many capabilities, I was hoping the phone would include some of them instead of it just being a connector choice.
Strange choice leaving out the HDMI stuff etc. Don't understand it. I wonder if the 810 gets too hot outputting to HDMI.
I don't know if people would use stuff other than OTG or video-out. But it'd definitely be nice for some guys for other devices (even though most can be connected to OTG).

If you have ever done presentations using a micro-usb to HDMI cable, you know that this puts a lot of stress on the connector. And having to drag a cable all over the place is an inconvenience. This is with a Nexus 7 (2013). For me, the presence of WiFi Direct and hence Miracast is far more important. I find that with the Nexus 7 at least, Miracast works perfectly. I use an Actiontec Screenbeam Mini2 as a dongle. I am anticipatinf that the Nexus 6p will work as well, but we will see.
why do you want a big cable connect to your tv/monitor?
I imagine Google want you to use their Chromecast ?

I don't think anyone wants the cable, per se. It is plug-n-play that we want. How do you go to a friend's house, hotel, couch-surfing, etc., and watch a movie that is on your Nexus 6P (on whatever televion is available).
