Making Streamer Out of Nexus 10 (Via HDMI Cable), Will it be Worth it?

Hello to all people,
I've been reading quite a lot lately about (android) tablets because I want to buy one at last.
I managed to shrink my options to 2: Nexus 10 and Asus Transformer Pad Infinity.
After hard digging about the Infinity in the forums I decided to drop it and go with Nexus 10.
One of the reasons I want a tablet is to make a streamer on the go from it...
I want to connect it to my TV with a HDMI cable to stream some movies.
But from tons of the reviews I read, I only noticed one review mentioning the quality and stability of the streaming. And It wasn't positive.
So I am asking you guys (and girls), what's your experiences on using the tablet this way?

HDMI streaming works good. The picture quality is great; however, I do not get any audio through HDMI. This might be a cable issue. Not a big deal since you can output audio through the audio jack.

Although there is many threads on some issue when streaming via HDMI, like no sound and black stripes on the sides and flickering I was reading....
makes me kinda worry...

Can you make full-screen the tv with no black spaces in the sides? i hate that

Works great on the N10. Don't buy an Asus tablet though. Their software is laggy and buggy as hell, and they don't support their devices. I had a TF201 and it was absolutely nothing but headaches. Stay away from Asus. You've been warned.

Well that's why I said I am choosing Nexus 10 over the Asus one... You are not the only one who suffered, and I read most of the complains people wrote.
I have other question though.
Since I lack the experience on the issue:
How does optical audio cable can be used with an HDMI cable to stream audio from the first and video from the second?
Asking because I have a receiver connected to my 5.1 audio set.

Does work, but mine struggles with higher bitrate 1080p movies over wifi.
There are bars but these may be able to be removed if you get rid of the 3 quick buttons at the bottom, not sure if this is possible with custom software.

Couldn't agree more. I tried out a TF700 from Amazon for a month, and during that period I had to exchange once from Amazon for a defect in the screen, then send the replacement in for warranty repair because of the same problem. Got it back from warranty 'repair' and it had the same problem in a different location of the screen. Returned them both to Amazon and bought a Nexus 10 from the Play store on launch day.
Couldn't be happier.
I was also amused that the rep claimed they had no prior reports of the screen/bezel problem, when the TF700 threads on here are filled with posts about it. And of course, if you've unlocked your bootloader (using the tool they provide) you have absolved them of any responsibility to repair manufacturing defects that passed through 'quality control' at their factory.

What I meant to ask is this:
I know that Nexus 10 does not posses optical audio port (TOSLINK), so I was wondering what people that want to use this sort of audio output do? Withought forgetting that the HDMI cable is beeing used for the picture and not the sound...

Streaming works great here. I can tell you as a former infinity owner that the nexus 10 blows it out of the water...

Yes, I'd like to know that also. My previous tablet was a BB PlayBook and it had controls for when you were connected to HDMI that let you control the output resolution, whether audio was passed through etc.. Is there anything like this in Android?

Try an app called Screen Standby. Works great for me on my Galaxy Nexus.

Tried it but doesn't work with my rooted Nexus 10. The screen flashes and stays on instead of turning off.

I connected the Nexus 10 to my TV:
- stereo audio is ok
- bad picture quality (its resizing)
- big black borders at the left and right side
- wrong frame rate on TV - movies look very bad
for me its a no go. Its absolutely not worth it.

I think it certainly must be possible as toslink is digital audio and hdmi outputs digital audio as well. I don't think any conversion would be needed so all you need is someone who makes the cables and takes the audio pinouts from the hdmi and routes them to a toslink cable as well. Unfortunately there isn't exactly a massive demand for such a cable so either find someone who makes the cables or maybe trawl the hi-fi websites to see if anywhere would sell them.

I just found a jack to compozit cable in my cabinet. It has a Jack father and an RCA (red-white-yellow) father. I have got a pic, but Im new in here, so I cant link...
So, I just wondering, can we use this cable to connect the N7 to a TV?
I know, at the moment we can't, but why? Because the hardware limitation, or the android doesn't support this feature?

As far as I know, you'd just be transporting the audio if you were to plug it into any device. You'd have to have an extra adapter to port the video through the yellow composite video cable.
Though people have been known to make some wicked little mods, so you never know these days.

Nexus 7 does not have the hardware capability.

You could always use an MHL adapter to output to a TV, that is if the Nexus 7 supports that method. I've never tried it.

Thats awkward. So If we want to connent the tablet to a television, we must use some wifi app, and the TV must be a smart one...
Or can We take advantage of pogo-jack? I never seen before this kind of plug, so I dont know, what it can do.

The pogo pins only do charging and audio.

Possible solution to HDMI Out?

Hi all,
Whilst chilling with a friend he showed me a new gadget he'd purchased.
It was a wireless HDMI solution that used USB.
The USB stick, broadcasted the HDMI to a reciever, which in-turn sat by the TV with an ACTUAL HDMI cable plugged into the TV.
My first though was, would this work for my nexus? Putting the USB into the OTG cable?
I thought the only issue maybe drivers?

From my understanding there is insufficient bandwidth via USB2 to smoothly stream video at anything other than very low resolution.

Yeah, I may just take my Nexus up to the friends, get it all connected and see what happens.
Would any1 be interested in me testing it?

USB 2.0 is plenty fast enough for a compressed 1080p HD video stream. It is plenty fast for several of them simultaneously, frankly.
I suspect that the device uses a windows driver plus a PC application program... neither of which the N7 will have.

That was my first thought, but then I started blaggin myself saying, well if mice/keyboards/USB Sticks etc all work, why not this little USB?

Usb 2 has like a max of 2 gigabits. More than enough for 720 from what I can guess.

No offence, I don't give a crap about the speed of USB, nor whether it can stream in "HD" or not. All I want to know is if this would work with the N7.

Then try it and let us know. I highly doubt it would work though. If video signals can be sent over the micro USB port, then ASUS would've just said the N7 supports MHL. Since MHL isn't supported, I doubt the video signals can be sent over the wire.

Dunno about this device, but I think USB s simply not fast enough for quality video. I had a Lenovo notebook with USB "docking" which was attached through USB. Along with external keyboard and mouse it also transfered video to external monitor. And there was visible difference then when using normal VGA/DVI. It kinda worked, but was annoying because it had problems with speed. So because of that experience I think USB is not viable solution for video. And I'm talking about displaying normal DESKTOP not video! With video it must be even worse.

Hey I don't know if it would work or not but I'm very interested in you testing it.

It's a USB device. If it has driver support, it'll work. There are USB 'video cards' that support "HD" resolutions. The trick is device support.

Just a spit-ball idea....what I use to stream content...the HTC media link works pretty well as a media streamer when it's plugged into your TV

For HDMI out I don't think your cable will work. Majority of older phones use mhl for HDMI out but the n4 uses slimport and mhl cables will not work

2. OTG only works with external power, and cannot work simultaneously with Slimport (No HDMI+OTG).
3. There is Miracast, but it sucks.

damn i bough cable wanted to experience playing games on hd tv but my phone bricked after that no chance let me see if that works whit htc one s (of my father)
anyway mine got a hdmi input and a power input and a micro-usb output

I just got the Rocket fish Miracast dongle from best buy. Works flawlessly. Streaming Netflix, HBO, CNN, etc. For gaming not useful, but for a media center experience, is perfect.

MHL support?

I recently put a new deck in my car, and the ONE reason I spent the money I did on it is because of the MHL capability. Now it seems all these new phones don't support MHL. None of the newer Samsung do, and it seems if I'm trying to get one of the top competitor phones, MHL is no longer an option?
Did anyone see/read/hear of MHL being a thing on the 6P? If it turns out that MHL isn't an option stock on this phone, is MHL a thing that can be added via a custom rom, or is it purely hardware?

Haven't seen any news of it, but can confirm there's hardware required as the USB port is different (at least on regular micro usb phones, NFI with USB-C). I can't even plug an MHL cable into my S6, whereas friend with Note 4 it all works easily.

That's kind of what I was thinking as well. Apparently they got rid of the MHL support completely in the S6 and Note5 Line. I read that they don't even have MHL in the Nexus 6.... So I'm really afraid they might not have it here either.... Kind of sucks I guess.

I am about ready to tuck a Miracast adapter behind my dashboard. Then there's no fussing with cables or anything

An alternative solution is chromecast has screen mirroring support. Tested it last night with the new chromecast app. Worked very well.

Chromecast needs the phone to be a hotspot and have internet connectivity at start up. Works if the conditions are right, so depends on where you live.

This means faster transfer speed - bull
Fast charge only because of qualcomm quick charge 2.0
No alternate modes (MHL, HDMI)

They mentioned in their Q&A, that the usb is 2.0 because it's always on and 3.0 takes more power apparently.

From what I understand, this phone does not support Qualcomm's QuickCharge. Every Google page on this phone says "Fast Charging". That's freaking bogus, too. It's part of the Qualcomm 810 processor. Why the heck not??? If the hardware is in there, its possible it could be enabled through a kernel tweak. No guarantees though.
And for that matter, that processor supports wireless charging through metal. Just give me DISPLAYPORT!

Uhh yes it does support quick charge. 10 mins charge give it 7 hours of use if I remember correctly. This isn't the Oppo OnePlus that tries to sugar coat things and sell you garbage.

Unfortunately, it does not support "Quick Charge" Everything Google has said is "Fast Charge" which is not the QC standard. All your chargers you have now, are slow and useless to the 6P.

So far Sony is doing a really good job with keeping the Xperia line with the MHL connections.

I was doing some research and found this thread. That CRUX looks interesting, but seems like Chromecast may be the way to go for $35.
