Face Unlock

I'm not on the official OTA bc I'm on the NS4G, but am I the only person that can only get face lock to work 1/27th of the time? I have tried time after time to make better captures of my face and done the face lock improvement countless times, and I have no beard. I almost look retarded how still and perfect I sit with my phone at direct eye level with my face. Its really upsetting :\ I have tried multiple ROMs and the same result with all of them. I always get 'Sorry, don't recognize you' or 'Couldn't find a face' and it makes me wanna smash it, because this was my most anticipated and exciting feature of ICS. Any suggestions or is anyone in my boat?

Same here. Seems like the time taken for the camera to adjust to the light is too long for FaceUnlock to recognize a face. Sad really.

I have tried Face Unlock on Peter Alfonso's ROM and though not perfect it was surprisingly good. It would work 7 out of 10 times.

Try the app "visidon" its free off market and I was using it on gingerbread flawlessly way before ics came out.

I installed face unlock on my stock ICS and it only works from time to time. I think that if someone changed the recognition time (so that the camera has more time to adjust), it might work better. But then again, it sometimes fails to recognize me even in environments where light isn't a problem (i.e. outside).
I think that, with the Nexus S, face unlock is more of a hit & miss thing. Sometimes, for example it gets it right 18/20.

Iv'e been using Visidon since before ICS and it works great.

Google was not including Face Unlock on the official releases of ICS for the Nexus S because the resolution of the front facing camera is not strong enough for Face Unlock to work satisfactorily in their eyes.
Having used it on a few different ROMs now, I'm tending to agree with them.

The stock ICS face unlock works fine for me. FYI, you have to make sure you take multiple training shots in different lighting conditions if you want it to be reliable.

When I first installed Pete Alfonso's ROM from a full wipe, I had Face Unlock. Then when I restored apps and data from Titanium, it's gone. I also have the Screen Lock options for None and Slide grayed out with "Disabled by administrator, encryption policy, or credential storage". Any idea what app or setting would cause that?

LOL the recognition time I think may be what screws me. The time is soooo long already on here, much longer and my arm would lose circulation. It is hard for me to hold the phone in the exact same position for very long. And thank you to the rest of you, I will try Visidon.

Yep, I was watching video when it asked me to update. Took around 10 minutes and kept all the data so everything functioned just like before. Except it looked better and the speed is amazing. Only down side that there is no face lock which I m hoping they will come up with an update!
Very satisfied customer here! Unlike my LG Optimus 2X phone which i m not expecting to get an update EVER.

Face unlock is a gimmick anyways..I have it on my phone, you usually end up having to type in your pin or pattern anyways, it is a negligible feature.

I should have factory reset before updating, that first reboot regenerating everything loaded (I guess) is taking a LONG time.

Wrong. I have it on my Galaxy Nexus and in 4.0.3 there's an option to improve face unlock. Just scan your face in different light, with/without glasses (if you have to wear) and in different angles (holding the phone in eye height, looking down on phone and so on) and face unlock works nearly everywhere except in total darkness. I took the time once and scanned about 30-40 situations, now face unlock works flawless.

I know this, but I have tried this, it still gives me 'no face found' or 'unable to recognize' failures often. Not to mention that it's just a major PITA to hold any device in a single position for it to recognize you (very unsafe while driving), and it takes a full 2-3 seconds longer to unlock than simply swiping in your pattern, which is the fallback if it doesn't recognize you anyway. I have not found a good use for it yet (presumably, wouldn't a photo of you work anyway? And isn't it easier for a criminal to get a picture of your face than to guess your pattern?)
Just saying, impractical gimmick. Fun to play with, but for anyone who uses their device often, they will get tired of looking at themselves while the device tries to recognize them..IMHO, FWIW

You can go back to stock You aren't stuck there lol just see the link in my sig (from the sounds of it though, you are still pretty green, and need to do A LOT of reading IMO before trying to do too much at once, you also need to determine if you are SBK1 or SBK2, my guide will help you determine this.)

Not a huge difference visually but huge performance boost!

got my transformer updated last night to ics and I cant find face unlock in settings. can anyone help me find it? or is it not there for tablets?

not available in this release for front cameras under 720p devs are working on it though already got it working on nexus s

Owning a Nexus, it's annoying anyway... cool but annoying.
I played with it for a few days and it was more hassle then it was worth. You have to "Improve" it constantly at first for it to even work with some consistency.
What they need to do is set a timer so once you face unlock, it just requires a simple slide to unlock for a set period... like 15min of screen off time. When you are working on something and constantly having to take self pictures to unlock the damn thing, it becomes a pain.
Once you face unlock, it should know that you're "around" close by. I only need FaceUnlock when I haven't been on my tablet for 15+ minutes and gone.

I agree completely. It's nothing more than a gimmick at this point.

Yes it's missing but it is running in the background. If you check all apps you will see it has the force close option. I myself just disabled the app so not to waste resources.

Load AOKP onto it. It has an option to delay the lock for a while and it works pretty good. Stock ICS has this option too whenever you have a secure lock turned on (like a pin) right under the lock options in security. Not sure why it doesn't show up otherwise but whatever. Only problem is that if you manually lock the screen it'll still lock it completely, hence why I like the AOKP option better because it doesn't care how the phone turns off it only locks it after x amount of screen off time.

Dunno, maybe try ripping the xoom's settings.apk & running it on your tf... probably won't work, but u can try

Transformer doesn't have Face unlock feature. Camera quality + no flash + night = ****ty moment.

This is one of the features why I was so excited for ICS, why did they break it out? :S

What on Earth does 'no flash' have to do with it ???? its the FRONT camera that gets used !!
I have Face Unlock on my Nexus but to be honest it stayed enabled a day or so as a novelty but is now an unused feature.

Front camera working for me .... did you flash via CWM ? and if so did you then flash the full ICS (minus recovery) OVER THE TOP ?
That seems to clear up a lot of small issues .....

It seems to be the only issue I have so far, everythign else works like a charm...
I just used the update feature in the tab itself...
Edit: The front cam does work when I switch to it in the Ustream app... so I guess it will work in Skype to... I never use it in the camera app anyway

no what i meant is that there arent many (any?) phones/tablets with a flash on the Front camera so its not an issue with the TF and face unlock ....
like i say though - face unlock on my Nexus is pretty much unused.

Faceunlock is one of the few new options in Android which is actually noticeable. ASUS sucks just like the others.

How many times have I said "phones has flash at front"? None. Face recognition in the dark works like a car with square wheels (hint: It just doesn't work).

Startup atrocity.

I'd like to vent that after owning this phone for however many months I have, the startup time is aging me. Is it just my phone in particular or do all Nexus 6's take years to turn on? Not having a reboot option on stock is a tad bit annoying too. Just saying.

It's pretty slow for me as well even with a reboot option. I heard it is due to the encryption. If I am wrong please correct me.

if you unencrypt, it boots much faster. also, on m, my encrypted n6 takes about 55 seconds to boot. a reboot option.. if you have root, you have many options. first one is entering reboot, or reboot recovery, or reboot bootloader into a terminal emulator. plus there are many widgets and apps that you can use.

Just hold the power button down until it reboots??

i actually agree, even though its easy to get into the bootloader the same way. if nothing else works, using widget that i created from the terminal emulator code works fine(root).

And as of v4p10 it actually does a safe shutdown (didn't before).
The Secure Settings app does a proper and safe shutdown too, and also has widgets.

The nexus is not all that exciting until you root it.

My stock (LMY47Z), rooted, un-encrypted, Nexus 6 took 52 seconds to boot completely from an off state to the lockscreen.

Mine is also LMY47Z with rooted and un-encrypted took 48 seconds to boot from off to lockscreen. Seems faster than yours but don't know why.

I'd that's the biggest gripe about the phone I'd say it's a pretty good fit for you...

It's a long boot time is it not? I might boot once every few days to once a week. Whats the difference? I find it annoying and was *****ing about it. "Atrocity" was me being humorous, relax a little.

Forum mod edited my post.

Boots up faster than almost any phone I've owned. Exception being my moto x 2013 dev. It booted insanely fast. I'm not encrypted tho so that may be why it only takes maybe 30sec to lock screed. Try going to an early jb device or if you want to be in pure hell a gb device and wait a minute or 2 to reboot.
