Future smartphone with keyboard? - G2 and Desire Z General

Hi there,
Does anyone know if there is a smartphone planned like the Desire Z?
For me the keyboard is the most important feature of my smartphone.

I recall a thread in which an xda user had sent an e-mail to HTC about this and they mentioned about it being discussed over at HTC Headquarters. They will probably release another phone but I wouldn't expect to make much out of it. The new line of HTC phones will probably be harder to unlock (if it's even possible, that is), and I wouldn't expect a userbase as large as this phones'. It seems like the Physcical keyboard are becoming deprecated...
However, if you don't exactly mind the above I'd say this phone will last you long enough till another HTC Device with a H/W Keyboard is released.

The One X has already been rooted, before its even released. Although you have to unlock the bootloader via HTC Unlock first (and therefore void your warranty);.

Not exactly your ideal tradeoff, especially for a phone like the One X...
So, it's still hard to unlock whilst preserving your warranty.

The phone isn't even released yet! So it remains to be seen how hard it will be.

I am in despair about any new keyboard phones coming
I am considering, that if my Desire Z stops working, getting a large-screen dual or quad-core phone. Something like the Galaxy Note. Perhaps the on-screen keyboard will work better for me on a large-screen phone.
I am also worried about the trend towards having no SD cards or removable batteries.

I wouldlike to see that too. The problem is, i cant mind the design of such a phone. New generation Smartphone are thin and stylie. The DZ ist in fact a bit too fat for that. Then if we got the whole thing thinner, we have a lack of hardwarepower, that leads us to lower cpu and ram.
I dunno what u think but i can type much faster and more precisely on HWK than on display. Its more silent too. The vibrating Feedback on screen is way louder than that little "click" on HWK, and can make people standing around u thinking "wtf is he raping his phone?".
There are some improvements in my mind too. For example: instead of the "never-used-shortcut-buttons" (at least i never did) there should be "left" and "right". Than u can choose the right displayed word (when typing long words) and hit enter. Makes u saving even more time.
I would buy the next HWK-HTC Sense Phone, definitly!

I am waiting for the next one as well... And yeah, this phone can really last long until maybe HTC releases a new HWK phone... I'm hoping sometime this year... If not, I might jump over to another manufacturer...
Also, I don't think they need to sacrifice power for phones with HWK, since most of us don't mind fat phones like the DZ. I'd rather want to see the next HWK from HTC in the mid to high end hardware-wise. I'd be happy if we get card slot and removable battery. I'm also getting worried about the trend of having no removeable battery. I might be able to tollerate no card slot, but I'd be worried if my phone has no removeable battery.

I have a GT 7.7 and the experience of typing onscreen is nowhere near the experience of the HWK. I was considering using the tab as my mobile office, however, I will stick to my DZ for that and use the Tab for entertainment and reading.
I dream of a 4" screen quadcore HTC with HWK and card slot. The nonremovable battery wouldn't bother me much.
Also, I don't consider the DZ a thick phone. If you compare it with other smartphone it is thicker, but I find it very balanced.

Just interested to see how things are going to fold out, as I'm considering an upgrade by the start of the next year. I had read a post at some site noting something about htc locking down it's bootloaders thus making it next to impossible to get s-off, et cetera. Hope that's not the case, else there's not much room for upgrade...

Unlocking the bootloader via HTC Unlock lets you load custom ROMs, you just need to do it through fastboot, since its not true S-Off.
And yes, HTC Unlock voids your warranty. But HTC's claim is that lots of noobs are messing up their phones when trying to mod them, and trying to claim them as warranty repairs. If the problem is really as bad as HTC claims, it seems like a fair tradeoff. Based on the noobs coming here asking for a "one-click root" and too lazy to use the Wiki method, I'm inclined to believe HTC's claim. Too many people getting into rooting and modding, and too lazy to really learn and understand what they are doing.

True that. Some people here always expect things to just happen.
And I'd also have to agree with HTC, whether I like it or not. But I think that the way they address this issue is too extreme. Voiding the entire warranty is not the way to do it. What they should instead do is "modify" the conditions. Although I guess it's more beneficial in terms of money to go with the former option.

That's true. Unlocking the bootloader shouldn't void the warranty in the case of hardware failures.

Same here tried the Sensation XL and the big screen made the onscreen keyboard a little easier, however came back to the DZ for the keypad. Also didn't realise how much I used the trackpad until I didn't have one. So eagerly awaiting the G3

Are you guys just speculating about a g3 or are there some rumors out there??
The more I continue my quest the more the mtouch 4g slide looks like a rocking phone with a solid keyboard and great specs.. What sayeth you all?!?

What i don't understand is why the sony xperia pro seems to be such an unknown phone. I remember it got really good reviews, so i don't know why it isn't really mentioned much at all.

Just speculating and wishful thinking... Looked at the Sony Experian Pro and looked very good, but agree with the previous comments about the community support.

The MT4GS is a solid phone with a community that is growing steadily. Get it if you can
HTC are now moving away from the traditional way of releasing their phones to having a single phone for each tier as is with the HTC One series of phones, so probability for a G3 is even slimmer now.

Samsung Vibrant old news already?

Ok so the Vibrant is not that old but seems like its forgotten already. Well the whole Galaxy S series! Bs since its only like 4 months old. Makes me mad that android devices get left behind so fast just to be replaced so quick. Not everyone can buy a new android device every week. I love my Vibrant but this crap makes me mad! Come on SLOW down with android devices already. Just my 2 cents! And no im not a fan boy. Just wanted to get this off my mind. Thanks a million!

you don't know much about the field and business of technology do you?
The second you buy any electronic device, it is obsolete before you even walk out of the store with it. It's something you have to accept if you make any electronics purchases.

Well as long as Samsung support the current Galaxy S line with updates I will be happy, if they don't, I know I won't be buying a Samsung phone again.
Even though they keep coming out with new phones doesn't mean yours isn't good. Root that baby, flash a rom and fall in love with your phone all over again.
Yea I Know how electronics are.just think its stupid.but love my vibrant. Already rooted.just need offical froyo 2.2 and and I will be happy!

cant wait for dual core smartphones with dedicated gpu.
4.5" screen
5+mp camera w/ flash and dedicated camera button
actual hard buttons
and of course ANDROID
And of course with the same 13-1500mAh batteries these has, so we'll have like 5000 threads about terrible battery life, etc.
Personally, I don't think there is anything great about the Vibrant outside of the screen. That was Samsung's main selling point. The GPU is good, but there are now apps popping up left and right that are claiming "No Support for Samsung Galaxy S."
Yahoo Messenger for Android now has no Support for Galaxy S, Lol.
Not going to bother buying another Samsung phone anyways, but certainly not going to buy another phone with internals outside of the mainstream.
I personally view them going in another direction IRT hardware has a massive failure. That's like buying a Windows Computer with an AMD Processor, and Microsoft telling you Live Messenger isn't supported on you computer because you got AMD instead of Intel, or Microsoft Office won't run on your computer because you're running Windows Vista instead of 7, or WoW won't run on your computer because you got an ATI instead of an NVidia. Massive failure, IMO.
Apps > Hardware.
Then there's the issue of a bunch of apps simply being incompatible due to the phone only having Android 2.1...
If you expect a Nexus S or whatever to change that, then I dunno what to say. 90% of high end smartphones run Snapdragons and most don't run TouchWiz, so developers will continue to target architectures which are the majority - as they should, cause targetting Samsung's phone and ending up with apps that crash and burn on all those other phones would be utterly retarded.

Got in the site... i figured it out and didn't have to watch that whole video lol
Please tell me your not mad that technology is advancing. Really? Is it such a bad thing? Nobody is forcing you to go out and buy the newest, fastest and greatest device. Personally I think while the vibrant may lack in 2.2 and some other things like flash and a 4.3" screen or HSPA+ it more than makes up for in MONSTER graphics computing, overall speed, a beautiful 4" SAMOLED screen and a camera that takes pretty amazing pics. I did expect better support from samsung considering the phone is across all carriers However I did buy the phone as is so I cant complain too much. it still holds its own against any other device out right now. Plus... The Nexus 2 will basically be a Galaxy S so we should see easy porting to our devices once gingerbread is released and android 3.0.
Hopefully we'll see some advanced implimentation of battery technology to make these handsets last a while with usage. Cause I don't want to see another ZOMG! I got 47 hours of battery.... with everything off.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
Thing about it is, I thought about this too.. What is out that your phone can't do? It can run all the latest apps, and will even be able to support gingerbread. You could have a 5ghz phone, but what good will it do? The 1/4 second that it would be quicker would not be noticeable.
Galaxy S. Maybe the next version will include the P, so it will have a GPS~
Slow down??? Hell no! Speed up with new devices already. And the Vibrant is just fine. I use it, it has an awesome screen, and new updates get uploaded on XDA almost on a daily basis. And I love watching new phones appear. It just means that by the time I get around to another upgrade in about 14 months, the phones at that time will be that much better. So keep innovating, companies, and improving and releasing new phones.

What exactly are you talking about. No one is complaining about technology advancing. People are complaining mostly (and mostly indirectly) about the rate at which hardware/devices are deprecated and forgotten about.
Lots of people come from a long background in using computers, so they are not used to seeing a 1 year old device become "unsupported" for the most part.

Yes, those threads piss me off so much I don't even open battery threads anymore unless it's one I posted in and there's a chance a reply may be directed at me.
Most people with great battery life hardly use the phone. I get 20 hours easy when it sits there in Standby for 18.5 of those hours. Once I start using the phone, the battery is crap. I actually had to uninstall some very useful applications so the battery wouldn't commit suicide.

Yep. Actually noticed the G2 add play 3x tonight. The hinge is crap, but at least the phone works as expected.
A phone doesn't have to be "really that good" to be worth the investment. In many cases, like the Vibrant, when the phone is supposed to be "really that good" it just turns out to be a failed result of overreaching.
I got this phone because it had a lot of storage in it, and it's not like T-Mobile had that many choices when it came to high end smartphones when the Vibrant was released. Some people replying to posts act like the G2, MyTouch4G, HD7, etc. were being sold in stores in July/August.
There was the HD2, and the Vibrant. That's it. The rest of T-Mobile's phones were utter crap.

This right here. What should have been a wonderful experience has been badly sullied by non-existent support.
Buying a phone on a 2 year contract and finding out that the phone isn't even properly supported for 4 months should be enough to piss anyone off.

[Q] Nexus One died in an accident - Advice on new phone?

So I was in a car crash and my N1 and car are goners. Well for my N1 it's only the screen that's cracked (inside, not the outside glass) but it's going to cost me upwards of $290 to get it repaired (I'm out of the states not near any repair centre etc) so that really sucks.
This thread is not to cry about it but looking for a proper replacement.
Like I said I'm out of the states and GSM/UMTS is what I need not CDMA and no contract options are available from carriers here so it's only fully unlocked (or with the potential to be) that will work for me.
I liked Stock Android but positively loved HTC Sense
So I was looking at either
1. Still trying to repair for the price above
2. A vendor here has HTC Desire HD - That would fit the HTC Sense wish but I hear there are battery issues(I've seen 'fixes' but no idea how well they work), the speaker's max volume is sort of low, I'm also worried about how good handsfree operation is (whether the mike works well etc)
3. Nexus S (that will be a few hurdles away to get it shipped to my country) but I'm sad about it being made by Sammy (could it mean no Sense would run on it - just speculation), then I was hoping it would have dual cores (that would be a nice upgrade), amazed it doesn't have 720p video recording in this day and age, sad it doesn't have hdmi out or microsd expansion (in that car crash the fact that I backed my stuff up on the sd card made me realise the importance)
4. Wait for the next decent (HTC?) dual core which could be way out.
Right now I'm using a stupid Blackberry that I absolutely hate. I didn't realise how much I could do with my phone until it was taken away.
So please shoot away and I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum
MyTouch 4 is your choice.
You can buy replacement screens off ebay, it really isnt that difficult to install one.
I would wait til January if possible. Lots of new stuff coming from HTC.
Maybe a Nokia 3310?
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App with Sexyy Nexyyy
1) Replace the screen later after buying one from ebay.
2) Nexus S.
3) Make do with anything & wait for dual cores to come out.
In the end, only you can answer these!
I did not realise you could get replacement screens on Ebay. With the 'shortages' in amoled. I can certainly do that if it will work. I'll look around for pointers on changing the screen but if someone already has a link handy I'd appreciate it.
I don't think I have anyway of getting a Mytouch 4g to where I live.
And if I can replace the screen then yes I can definitely hold off purchasing another phone till Dual cores are up and about. I did not intend to replace this phone till June/July next year
Thanks for your input everyone.
Edit: I've just browsed ebay rapidly. I see they sell the screen 'without' the digitizer. I'm unsure if I will need one or not. I'm also seeing that amoleds are about $75 and the reference is H78. I'd just like to make sure that I will be buying the right thing =[
Ps: I am SO opening my bootloader after that =\
I would try to wait for the dual cores to come out as its close if you can stand the Blackberry for a few months.
At least that is what I would do.
Ford Fiesta. Car bumped into me while I was at around 35Mph and i went under a MiniVan.
Something else that's putting me off changing phones is I have my Car Dock for my N1 as well as an extra battery. I am amazed at how there's no real dock for Desire/HD or samsungs.
Believe me Lythandra I wish I could wait but I can't even bring myself to put back contact numbers on this BlackBerry. Plus there's so much that can be done on Android. Which reminds me I'll lose my privileged unlimited Tags on Shazam if I change phone
Edit: Does anyone think there'll be a Sense rom with 720p for the Nexus S?
I would buy the phone Google supports the most (just as the Nexus One), so I would go for the Nexus S
One more question. Does the Desire use exactly the same screen and internal connections? Cause this guy from an HTC shop here says they only do HTC's branded as HTC's and that they do repair Desire screens.
I thought this was incredibly stupid
RAZR...nuff said.
If you want Sense UI, then it makes sense (haha) to go for a phone that supports it natively, saves the pain and bugs of trying to get something to run on something it was never designed for. I tried a Sense UI ROM on my N1 when I had it, and it had a few annoying bugs for me, despite otherwise being a fairly decent port.
The Desire for me is a better phone, if you can look beyond noise cancelling and the silly coloured track ball, which is nice, but hardly anything to get that excited about; the desire has a hardware buttons which are much, MUCH nicer to use than those crap soft touch buttons on the N1. Said it all to me how other people really struggled to use the N1 when I let them have a play because the buttons are so unresponsive. Even after several months I had got used to them, but they still irritated.
If you're in the US though, naturally you have many more options available to you... I only know about stuff you can get in the UK.
There is one guy on a forum I visit who recently returned his Desire HD, stating he was really disappointed with the battery life and screen, and saying he would rather have the Desire. Make of that what you will.
if u plan to spend lots of money for a new phone i would wait till dual-core android HTC device.don't fall for the out dated nexus s which justa galaxy s made by "samsung".wait till january for HTC's release of dual-core android beasts.
Well I'm not in the US, I'm on an island in the indian ocean.
Anyways I'm thinking I'll give the repair a try. If that doesn't work (because of a busted digitiser or w/e) then I'll think again.
Btw I love my N1 trackball and got used to the "got to press them a particular way" soft buttons.
I love the trackball because I can set a different colour for different events. Say 1 colour for the gf's text messages, 1 colour for when work is calling. That way at a glance (when the phone's on my desk or not in my pocket) I know what it is. Saddens me they're not keeping that trend.

Nexus S Win, Moto Atrix Fail;)

I would say about 80 percent of Atrix users I have spoke to are unhappy with there purchase. With mumblings of shoddy software and no real time speed increases, its fair to assume this device is a bit of a fail. Just go over to the marketplace and see the large second hand market for Atrix's, after just one month on sale.
So glad I have my Nexus S
The Atrix I fear is one of the nails in motorola's coffin.

lol.. any chance you read the benchmark comparisons between LG Optimus 2X vs. Atrix? not that benchmarks mean anything but it was interesting to see the difference between those two phones.
Next up versus the Nexus S. T-Mobile G2x, it actually seems like a good competitor on paper. Since its reportedly supposed to be running on stock Android. But I'll most likely wait until a quad-core Nexus phone comes out since Quad cores are rumored to be done by later this year.
These devices I feel are making a bad name for android. People who got the atrix as their first android phone, would probably think that android is laggy even with dual core processor. I wish Google would have went the 'apple route' and control both hardware and software instead of letting these manufacturers put crap on android.

Agree with Mokurex anyone use this device will hate Android
I think Google should force phones manufactures to install a stock
Android over there phones (controlled by Google).
Then they could put there software in the market
and make it connected with the phone serial number.
That will make all phones up to date also will give the consumer
the right to chose wither to install these apps or not
I tried many Android phones from HTC, MOTO and SAMSUNG
I found Nexus S the fastest, cleanest and most beautiful phone

Android is Open Source, they couldn't reinforce those ideas if they wanted to because Android from the very beginning was established to be opened to any company.
And honestly, too many of you are thinking as a enthusiastic user. Why exactly do you think these manufacturers don't care so much about upgrading their phones to the latest Android version? The average user is the large % of their sales. The average user doesn't look at Android the way we do. They don't even know about Froyo or Gingerbread. They just use a phone as a phone.
Nexus S is definitely a great device. And I'm not looking back. From this point onward (since Nexus S), I decided that I'm only getting Nexus based devices. Anything other than that, I'm not interested.
I happen to have an Atrix and Nexus S in front of me right now... been testing them together for a few days. The Nexus S has been my main daily driver and the Atrix just accompanies to see how well it stacks up. Bottom line... the Atrix is going back, nexus S staying for a while longer for now.
It's just another classical case of good hardware, horrible software implementation, similar to how Nokia was going with S60. Nothing is optimized for the dual core, the Nexus S is faster at almost every task, even flash playback in the browser which is surprising, because the hummingbird chipsets are known to suck at browsing compared to snapdragons. Also, the Atrix has a terrible case of color banding... if you thought the SAMOLEDs were bad, the Atrix just doesn't use its 24bit panel at all. Again, poor software. The camera is much better, and the battery is significantly better, but all the software and bloatware just takes away from the experience so much.
If you have anything you guys want me to compare between the two let me know before I return it =)

Nexus S is definitely a great device. And I'm not looking back. From this point onward (since Nexus S), I decided that I'm only getting Nexus based devices. Anything other than that, I'm not interested.

correction: Super AMOLED i wonder what Super AMOLED Plus looks like, but yeah i totally agree about Samsung. I don't get whats the hatred towards Samsung, they have no control over the Nexus S.
Sure, people criticize about the plastic back. I wish it was aluminium myself, but believe me. This phone is not CHEAPLY made at all, it's solidly constructed.
There's no such thing as a perfect phone. But the Nexus S is pretty damn close to perfect. If it had 720p and SD card, it'd be perfect without question. 4G on top of that, it's a dream phone. But I don't really care about 4G
I have Q could Nexus s get 720p thru a future update?

No its a hardware limitation. It could get hacked by CyanogenMod team and 720p could be added but it wouldn't be "true" 720p if you know what I mean.

Torn between these two phones, was going to pick up an Atrix the other day but then found out Nexus S is coming to all Canadian carriers according to Samsung.
Love the Nexus but really hate the fact it's only 16GB with no SD card. If it was 32GB I could handle it. Missing 720p sucks too.
How likely is it that Motorola would either fix Motoblur or ditch it when they release the Atrix Gingerbread update this year? or at least unlock the bootloader so you can run a stock version of Gingerbread if you choose?
If I was confident that I could run stock versions of Android on the Atrix, my decision would be easy.

Well that's pretty easy to answer. The probability of that happening is zero. Motorola locks the bootloader on all their phones and it's up to people here to hack it. It only really slows them down, but still it's annoying. Also, gingerbread will be a while away I'm guessing, let alone Ice Cream.
Just look at the entire history of Motorola android phones and see which ones actually have an AOSP ROM out (cyanogen)... the answer is only one, the original Droid/Milestone from 2009. If you want customization, HTC and Samsung phones seem to get more ROMs. You may think that Motorola doesn't want custom ROMs because they polish their blur UI but it's quite the opposite with my Atrix experience. Everything, I mean virtually EVERYTHING is half-assed on the phone. Terrible color banding, random reboots, tons and tons of bloatware that conflict with each other and drain the battery (which is why you see battery complaints despite having a 1930mah battery).
thanks, making my decision easier. I'm a noob to android, switching over from my piece of crap iphone (jailbroken, themed, etc) so I'm hoping to learn from anybody's experience with these phones.
The nexus will probably make me happier, but I love the hardware profile of the Atrix. Damn I just want an Atrix running a clean version of Gingerbread.
Don't get me wrong, the Atrix is still a great phone. If you're stuck between an iPhone, Atrix, or Nexus S, no matter what you'll end up with a powerful phone. I have no doubt the Atrix will be a smooth machine in the hands of an experienced Android user who knows what apps to freeze, etc., but there are some things that just can't be fixed until Motorola decides to fix them for us such as the color banding, capped upload speeds, multitouch bugs, etc. Yea it has a Tegra 2, but the GPU is actually not even better than the Nexus S/Galaxy S GPU. I've played a bunch of Tegra games and they don't look any better than games that are on the iPhone (which has a slower GPU than the Nexus S). Sure, Tegra zone will help the gaming market pick up for android by enforcing a standard, but it's still a crappy standard for coming out a year later.

With mumblings of shoddy software and no real time speed increases, its fair to assume this device is a bit of a fail. Just go over to the marketplace and see the large second hand market for Atrix's, after just one month on sale.

over all. the new problems with atrix makes it abit of fail device now in my eyes
- Locked bootloader. and it doesnt seem its going to be unlocked anytime soon. even the new HTC is locked. i believe from now on all the phones will be locked. which makes the Nexus Line is the only available option for the people like us who like to tweak his phone. whatever optimus 2x or galaxy S2 or Evo 3d will be unlocked is different story. but for now. the best safe bet go with Nexus line.
- only 2 fingers for multi touch + it stops working after you holding it for 12 seconds. like say you are playing racing games, and you are pressing the screen to throttle, while the other finger to move your car, after 12 seconds both touches will stop responding and the screen will act fuzzy for like 4 to 5 seconds before it gets its act together. whatever that is hardware problem or software problem. its a total fail for gaming on that device no matter how powerful its.
and even if its a software issue, knowing motorolla. atrix owners will be glad if they get it fixed by the end of the year. + locked bootloader so devs to try and fix it them selves is out of the window. makes the atrix a complete fail in my eyes.
- the screen is ****. i am sorry but if i can see pixels on both screens. why would i go with less colors ? sure the pixels density are more in atrix. but i still see the pixels. and the colors are not nice as SA. why would i go back step ?
honestly. between atrix and Nexus S. the Nexus S wins hands down. and this coming from an iphone owner who used atrix for couple of days and use the nexus S almost every day since its with my young brother
but i dont agree that this is a nail in the coffin for motorolla. this company is so huge to be effected by couple of flips of phones. and even then. the moto sold very well. the hype alone sold the phone. sure many didnt like it. but for moto, they sold good enough so thats not a flop for them.

I fear these locked bootloaders have been brought in after what happened with the g2 and HD line. So many people bricked their phones using the early complicated method to root and get Eng S-off. I know for a fact T-Mobile USA replaced every handset without questioning or checking for the actual cause. I think when these phones eventually got back to HTC they saw there was only one future option, leave all phones unlocked, or lock down the phones completely. They seem to have chosen the second route. I personally would not buy a phone I could not root as this was the main reason for me to ditch the iphone. I'm a firm believer that if you purchase a phone you should be able to do what the hell you like with it. I would pefer that all phones come with an oem bootloader unlock but If activated generates a limited warranty to just hardware faults. I think OEM's just need to use some common sense when replacing handsets, people that brick their phones through lack of knowledge or stupidity should face the consequences.

actually, there is a more " easy " reason why they decided to lock it down.
they really dont want people to keep their phone. they want people to change at least once a year. which is why they are offering more than 1 device per year.
if you have unlocked bootloader. then you will update your software without needing HTC or Samsung or any other company for that matters. and it will prevent a possible future sale of their new offering. its a business move.
which is why i like apple in this regard. 1 phone per year. smart move. keep the customers loyal to you. dont screw them up by releasing a newer better device than yours every 3 months or 4.
there is a reason why apple is leading. too bad all other companies are that stupid :/
as for the andriod, i think from now on all companies will use a locked bootloader. locked karnel. the only way to go is the nexus line i assume if you are looking for open Dev mobile. and i highly doubt Samsung or LG will let their new high end phones like optimus 2x, optimus 3G or galaxy S2 to be without a signed bootloader.

I picked up an unlocked Atrix from Bell Canada (while I was there skiing) last week and put a long side my Nexus S, I actually prefer the Atrix - and I'll explain why.
I'm not one who cares about unlocking bootloaders. Not everyone wants to mod their phones. My Nexus S is still locked. BTW, the Atrix bootloader has been cracked (http://www.androidcentral.com/has-motorolas-bootloader-encryption-been-cracked) but you already knew that didnt you??
The Atrix is running Android 2.2 which accounts for a little lag and reduced dual core speed. Once it gets the latest version of Gingerbread - which has full multi CPU support, the phone will be a whole lot different. Having dual cores in the long run will at least keep the Atrix up there with the best for at least 6-7 months, as opposed to the Nexus S which is technically already outdated and old tech (actually it was already old tech 1-2 months prior to its release lol).
I actually like the screen on the Atrix and I rate it better than the Nexus S SAMOLED - especially outside. Sure the SAMOLED has deep blacks and rich colours, but I still cant see the ****er in direct sunlight. For me, this is a complete fail.
The finger print scanner is unique and reliable. Its good to know that my phone is locked down, especially if it is stolen or I loose it.
The build quality on mine is superb. I can't fault it to be honest.
The Atrix has gorilla glass (thank God), as opposed to a rubbish glass screen with a pathetic oleophobic coating that rubs off after 2 weeks of use (I'm on my 3rd Nexus S because of this **** BTW - and the screen scratches so easily even when its in my empty jeans pocket..... )
****
The only advantages of having the Nexus S is that it will get the latest Android updates and you unlock the bootloader to flash what ever rom/kernel (whatever) you want...
****
I'm not here to bash the Nexus S, just sharing my opinions. I just wish Google stuck with HTC for the Nexus S, rather than going cheap with Samsung. HTC make a far better quality handset for sure. The plasticky build of the Nexus S is a real let down.
I also think Motorola has turned over a new leaf with the Atrix. They've gone in all guns blazing with a laptop dock and loads of accessories like HDMI desktop docks, etc as well. I do not think they intend to let this handset die off into the sunset without software updates. If they did this with the Atrix, they will kill themselves just like Sony Ericsson did with the X10 line. I will never ever ever ever never ever touch another Sony Ericsson handset for the rest of my life.

News: HTC to retire QWERTY from its future plans

HTC to retire QWERTY from its future plans
http://www.phonearena.com/news/HTC-to-retire-QWERTY-from-its-future-plans_id29293
Does it mean we will not get a decent Desire Z successor from HTC?
That would be sad because i like the look and feel of a real hardware keyboard.
And it's much more comfortable compared to a virtual keyboard.
Maybe sony, motorola or lg will build a comparable "successor" for the desire z.
the reason why HTC's qwerty phone recently are not as good as they should because of the quirky hinge mechanism and if you want to bring up HTC Chacha, then it's their screw up because that's a mediocre phone that sucks to begin with.
bring back the HTC Touch Pro type qwerty keyboard and we'll talk.

Nice
This wouldn't surprise me one bit. HTC has been making one stupid decision after the another. The One Series with non removable batteries or storage is extremely flawed thinking. I know they have been struggling lately compared to Samsung, Motorola, etc... But simplifying phones isn't the answer. Making fewer, more higher quality phones sounds good (and is something they should stick with) but not at the cost of losing features to make it 1mm thinner! Who knows with these stupid phone manufacturers though?! They might change their minds/direction again in a few months lol! I don't think they even know what they want! I'm really starting to lose faith in HTC whether this story is true or not.
Almost as if they have caught the Nokia flu then?
Panic, panic and then some panic? Let's hope they don't announce abandoning Android and betting everything on Microsoft and for example thin-thin phones.
Seriously, the hardware keyboard is not on it's way out. No way. When machines can read our minds maybe.
Bought my 2nd DZ (brand new) a few weeks ago , a phone without a physical keyboard isn't an option for me.

My thoughts exactly. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
On a more serious note, I may be wrong but I've noticed that HTC is moving towards a more iPhoneish design of devices. Like the non-removable batteries for example.
This is a tad disappointing to be honest...I always liked HTC because the produced quality phones, like the Touch Pro2 or the Desire Z, but I don't see the same quality with the one Series.

So this means I will get my new phone from someone else, I love HTC for the things we all know. But I'm not a fanboy, so no qwerty, no HTC. The problem is who... I don't like at all LG and Samsung for different reason (I think I bought the worst optimus one ever sold... And about Samsung, have you read they're about to release S-Cloud........) Motorola could get better with google and the milestones doesn't look bad at all, but google seems to be about to sell its mobile sector and motorola phones have always looked a bit too serious for me.. The desire z was perfect betweem the LG/Samsung qwerty phones thta seemed to be built for kids to break them in a hour and Motorola that looked like business phones...
Hiope they change their mind or it's fake...

u do know our dz is the best between all of those...
Two things brought me to HTC - a great keyboard and a greater interface. I love Sense UI and everything in it. I love my Desire Z's keyboard and everything about it.
Too bad. I'll have to choose..
Well, the statement in the article (even if its confirmed) doesn't make any claim to the length of time they are talking about (just "future plans"). If anything, HTC has shown in the past few months that they are willing to change direction quickly in order to compete. May very well only be a present and near future plan. And while this does seem to sink hopes of finding a suitable QWERTY replacement for the Z/G2 anytime soon, I have no doubt that HTC would quickly change this stance at a later time, if they had reason to believe there was good enough demand for phones with hardware keyboards.
As for competitors with QWERTY smartphones, just my opinion that all other manufacturers tend to disappoint me with their build quality. Motorola handsets often look great on paper, and even ok in photos, but always feel like cheap plasticky crap, with clunky keyboards once in hand. Similarly, Samsung and LG continue to feel lower in build quality to most HTC products.
But on that same note, its disappointing to see HTC take the "slimmer, lighter" route with their flagship One X line. Haven't actually held one in hand yet, but I have a feeling the polycarbonate body just isn't going to feel as sturdy as HTC's aluminum body designs. I've read a number complaints about the weight of aluminum body phones, and the popular trend is obviously thinner & lighter. But I actually like to have some heft to the phone. Aluminum body phones just look nicer, and feel more durable than skinny light plastic phones. And I don't understand why people make such a big deal about weight anyway. It doesn't make any difference when its sitting in your pocket. And if you get tired holding something that weighs a few ounces, you should probably exercise more.

I'm afraid H/W Keyboard phones have gotten less popular.
The ones that are out right now don't really compare to the DZ and it doesn't seem like there'll ever be a worthy successor to it. Thus, there will be a lot less users and even less devs on such phones.
I don't know about you guys, but whether I like it or not, I'd easily give up a H/W keyboard for a good and lasting dev scene like ours.
@redpoint I've had the chance to play around with a One X yesterday and I think you stand correct about the build quality. I'd much rather prefer an aluminum body over polycarbonate.

I Hate Samsung as an HTC fanboy, but they have been consistent with their products, and that conveys a certain feeling of comfort with a product... A superior screen, and sound, does that really make it better? I want honest opinions (I understand that is very unlikely). Come on people of XDA, everybody wants to buy a superior product...

I always try to go for galaxy phone but every time I saw their new phone screen I give up.
I really do not know why people like galaxy screen which is not bright at all, hard to read text, only when play video maybe it is good.
No disrespect as it's of course a matter of opinion.
But I think I have to take the opposite side when it comes to ingenuity. I think HTC has done pretty good this year.
Complete Aluminium design - Complete first in smartphone design
Front facing stereo speakers - No one has yet to do with these generations of Smartphones
4MP camera ultrapixel or whatever (it's a trade off for detail/low light but it still counts as ingenuity as HTC is breaking away from everyone else and being original)
Blink Feed/Sense 5- while it's not a complete new idea it is something we haven't seen implemented on Android in this way. A permanent social feed.
And the Zoe capturing video and picture at the same time may be gimmicky, but still showing ingenuity
I'd love to hear why you think opposite though

The S4 is only going to make sense for exactly two reasons, and that will be microSD and removable battery. Snapdragon means development will be much easier, and S-OFF will happen faster. I can break it down point by point and explain with the engineer's perspective why HTC is doing the right thing to make the best product, even if it doesn't sound as impressive.

I see where you're coming from OP, HTC really lags sometimes when releasing kernel source versus Samsung
Personally, I'm a die-hard Sense man. I love it. Yet, my next will be Samsung because the super easy rooting and no need to do any "wire" tricks and all this risky stuff to root that comes with an HTC device now is a PITA. I mean Samsung comes with an unlocked bootloader versus locked HTC bootloader and also nand-locked. Makes it difficult to choose, but I'd rather go with greater dev support and higher chances of gaining root and gaining root safely.
And this has nothing to do with ingenuity. HTC is doing some nice things as notsointeresting pointed out, but the other things theyre doing is really making them dig their own grave, at least from the way i see it. I mean, the whole reason Android has gained so much ground on Apple and actually surpassed it was mainly because of the whole "open source" thing that lead to the creation of a huge developer / contributor community. Yet companies like Motorola, LG, and HTC make it really difficult to take advantage of these community-contributed material by locking their devices' bootloaders and generally making it difficult to root. In light of this, its no surprise that Samsung is so popular now
I'm seriously thinking about getting the HTC one, I am so done with Samsung and their plastic phones. My only concern with the HTC one is the non removable battery. Let me be more specific, I absolutely love rooting and flashing custom Roms on my phones. In the past when my phone would freeze and there was no other option, I would just pull the battery and presto, however, with a non removable battery what are we supposed to do if the phone freezes up on us... What are our options???

What are our options???

I'm seriously thinking about getting the HTC one, I am so done with Samsung and their plastic phones. My only concern with the HTC one is the non removable battery. Press and hold power for about 10 seconds and that simulates a battery pull.

Shut up!!! It's that easy?? Omg, sorry for sounding like such a noob, it's just that the HTC one will be my first phone with a non removable battery. I had no idea that's all you had to do. Thanks, can't wait to get my one now

You know what I thought about how easy it is to root and flash roms on Samsung devices and how slightly more difficult it is to root etc htc. But then I thought could I own another plastic phone and every time the answer was "NO I couldn't" even if it was easier to root.
Easy rooting is invalid with this device. You guys have not been in the dev section? There is a superroot where it roots your device at boot with just a file and a click.

You do realise it's the same with Samsung phones as well? Just holding power button is much easier than removing your phone from its case, taking off back cover, Battery pull, replace cover, replace case....

Seriously people saying Samsung is easier to root and HTC is worse at software development support, YOU GUYS MUST NEVER OWN BOTH OF THEM! ( p.s I have hox and s2 )
Odin is pratically the dumbest software to flash an OTA or root kernel or recovery. ( Okay not dumb but hard to use ) and Samsung OTA namings are the worst. With all the alphabets naming you need to search and search again for your desired version. Whereas HTC is so easy by looking at the numbers only. And updating an OTA only requires you to fastboot flash a stock recovery then run the OTA.exe then its done.
Besides, HTC always provide bootloader unlock on htcdev.com ( yes One is already available ). And its easy as 1,2,3 which I see no points for people always complaining about it. Although no S-Off really make something a lot more difficult on HOX, ( flashing kernel is a pain, yes ) but seeing how Snapdragon processors usually have problem to achieve a S-Off this is not a big issue too.
After living one year with non removable SD n battery I actually get used to it. With non-removable battery you won't have to pull ur precious battery cover apart to restart a phone freezes at flashing ROMs ( admit it you hate to take apart your phone, my heart just aches when taking apart battery cover of S2 or incredible S ) and with non-removable SD you always clean it up so less defragmentation occurs.
I may sound biased but this is truly from someone who has experienced them both. Hope it helps.
I didn't mean "ingenuity". That's my fault. They are trying new things. The problem with doing that, is as soon as they make a niche in the market (think OG EVO), they change the concept...
I like that they are trying to be the first to do this or that, but they don't need to change every aspect of there device design with each new device... I mean, really?
I think most will agree with me on this, take the stereo sound out and fill that space with LI-PO... I would much rather the device last a little longer, than hear my phone ring 2 houses away.
And everybody claims that the screen is the number one thing about a smartphone, bullcrap. Software is, and if you can develop easier on one device than you can another, developers are probably gonna swing toward that device...
HTC needs to realise that "flagship" phones, with all their tech and wonder, are going to sell to the dev community (aside from the ONE uppers (pun intended)). But all they do is drive a wedge with there ridiculous locks and late source code releases.
Apple made it to where it is today because simplicity, people want simple devices (including devs). They are still at the top (albeit, as a fashion statement, rather than a phone now that Steve Jobs can influence the tech)... Numbers don't lie, they are the only constant in this universe, the only truly universal language.
Open-source is a brilliant idea, but when we can't use it on a device, it's basically a hard to use iPhone (locked-down), and nobody wants a device that they can neither work easily, nor change it to make it better... Which is the reason Samsung sells more devices, and has a HUGE dev following. The same reason they don't bother with a new fully aluminum chassis, because it sold before, it will again. If it is not broke, don't try to fix it.
I have my opinion, others have their opinions, I don't mind them, I just voice mine.

Developers make apps for every phone. Android = Android. You can tout software features from the brands all you want, but most people here on XDA use their own launcher and their own apps for any phone. Software is the number one thing, but all Android 4.1 and above devices are all running the exact same software in my book.
Don't get me wrong, I want to play with BlinkFeed and all, but at the end of the day I will probably go back to Zeam launcher, exDialer, GoogleVoice for texting, and the official FaceBook app... the exact same software I would use on any Android phone old or new.
EDIT: PreHome for task-switcher, MX Player for video, etc, etc, etc. The one thing I haven't found a good 3rd-party solution for is the camera app, so for that, I am excited to try this new Zoe thing (I thought of that idea 5 years ago... why take pictures when you can take 2-sec video and then make the best picture from it later).

I agree with that, I'm a sense man myself. Thank you for your opinion.
