Replacement evo - EVO 4G General

My wife's evo has some hardware issues with the camera. It is rooted, would you all recommend unrooting if going for a replacement?
EDIT:
Anything else to clean up other than unrooting, and removing root only apps and .apks? Do they really go digging for any related files?

Yes

I thought it was an absolute yes, until I read a few threads on here where it didn't seem to matter for some.

Iv ran into this problem in the summer. My charger port was a little funky and non stop went into car mode. i was rooted and at the time was not able to unroot it. I asked for a replacement and when i had to send it in i did EVERYthing possiable so they wouldnt be able to even turn it on to see its rooted lol.
i cracked the screen badly.
shoved a screwdriver into the charger port so they couldnt charge it.
messed up the battery charging cells so no battery could power it on.

Yeah i went a little overkill but i was not able to unroot at all because my phone would not connect to any PC. It was the only other way lol! it worked though!

This question has probably been asked at least 50 times on here. The general consensus is that most sprint stores won't care if you are rooted, as long as you are on a stock rom. However, it is very possible they could flag your device and void your warranty. Since unrooting and re-rooting only takes 5 minutes, just do it to be safe.

The second part of my question is more my interest. I am aware of the general consensus.

If you're gonna unroot (which I've never found necessary, after numerous screen and camera and speaker and bezel replacements), and remove any root related app, I'm not sure what more you could do, or what you're asking.

The reason I say yes is because it's really hit or miss, it depends on the employee who is taking care of you. There are many people who've had success without unrooting and plenty who haven't.
I'm just a better safe than sorry type of guy. Rooting and unrooting only take a couple minutes anyway. Also there are enough refurb evos that most stores will take in your phone for repair and have you pick up a refurb the next day while your phone gets sent off to be repaired for the next person.
But if you plan on not unrooting then I would suggest a stock rooted rom without any root related apps and also a cleared SD card. I've heard a few stories of being turned down for repair for root related material on the SD card even after they unrooted lol.

It changed last month. It is really nice now, but people still question insurance. However this doesn't help w/ lost or stolen or water damaged devices. Also physical damage can be fixed in house now if we have the parts.

Why does everybody worry about taking their phones in for repair if they are rooted? As long as what you want to get fixed isn't software related they don't care. I am rooted and running Fresh with Riptide's theme and took my phone in last month for a screen replacement and yesterday to replace a broken plastic cover over the camera lens. Nothing was said the first time for the screen, and yesterday I was asked how I was getting the great battery life I was getting so I told them it was due to the custom ROM and kernel. They were impressed. And, yes both repairs were free because I have Total Equipment Protection.

Most of them won't care or won't even know. But all it takes of that one guy to care and then void your warranty. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to take that chance because of laziness.

I would raise holy hell if they tried to void my warranty on a non-software related issue I brought my phone in for. Feel free to root and unroot all you want. I'll stick with "laziness".
I had my screen crack fixed by Sprint. I simply flashed Joey Krim's stock looking rooted 2.2 and they didn't ask a question.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=699847
Just make a nandroid of your phone. I put my OEM SD card back in the phone and kept my good SD card with me. They fixed my screen, no questions asked. However, when they accidentally broke my volume down button on the side (need that one!) they just gave me a new phone. Nothing but good things about Sprints service.

Are you sending it back to HTC or T-Mobile?
Warranty is voided when you root. IF they find it's rooted, I would think there would be a process they would have to go through in order for them to charge you for it. Worst case, if they did catch it, you could say 'I don't know what you are talking about'.
If they push up against you even more, you could concede and tell them to send the phone back to you and then you could unroot and sell it yourself.
Unrooting takes less than 5 minutes. I just did it 2 nights ago and rooting my new phone and unrooting my old phone took a total of 10 minutes.

So you rooted and have no idea how to recover? Was rooting cool? Did it make you cooler while it worked?
But now you're stuck right? Rooted to be cool but now out in the cold because you have no idea what to do?
And you wanna send the phone back thus driving up manufacturer and carrier costs that are eventually handed down to us consumers? The same people you are now asking for help?
Go figure.
You think maybe he is sending the phone back because of the screen issues? That has nothing to do with rooting a phone.
EDIT: I realize rooting the phone forces mfg to spend time changing back in order to sell it so my question isn't as valid as I previously thought. Considering the amounts of people sending their phones back, this instance hardly makes a dent.
But...

What are the commands that you are using also do you have the recovery.img in the root of your sdcard (not in any folders)
Now I haven't flashed anything via terminal since I first rooted my g1 but heres the commands I used in telnet (found in the market)
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd sdcard
flash_image recovery recovery.img
cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
I'm pretty sure you can do these via terminal but not positive on that one.

Tough guy? Get a grip. Stop trying to be an internet commando and police yourself.
Sorry if I somehow offended your sensitive nature. This site is about phones so remove the personal garbage in your posts.
i've returned like 10 phones to t-mobile, g1...mytouch....vibrant....cliq and Mytouch 4G all were rooted and all i did was put a stockish looking rom back on.
they aren't checking for that when the phones come back. they are looking for cracks in the screen and liquid damage, that's it.
I was a manager for t-mobile for 1.5 years...i know the sop on this.
Also did like 5 warranty replacements through HTC (Nexus one) and sent 4 of them unlocked and never had a problem.
you're fine, don't sweat it. Just make it look as stock looking as possible when you send it in.
I edited my post since you responded. However, the reason he is sending it back isn't known so that's a stalemate.
It's not about policing. It's about helping or not helping without oozing elitism. Your condescending answer doesn't do the forum any good.

I am surprised by the silliness that I read earlier in this thread. It was more in keeping with the "cheer leading" threads that do not contain any useful information and not at all in keeping the substance of XDA developers - probably the premier how-to tech thread for mobile devices.
It is due to the information contained in this forum that TMo and other vendors sell many of their devices and services in the first place. The proposition that rooting and modifying these devices (an occasionally returning a few) is going to cost other buyers anything is totally absurd.
Fortunately, there were some useful follow-on posts on how to unroot it, and especially the post from the TMo guy.
Getting the best use from your device is what XDA is all about - lets keep it rolling!

Several people had theirs replaced for free so as long as you don't get a **** of a tech....
For those that are on the beta Bonsai 4.1.0b9 the 2 quickest ways to get back to 4.0.1 is to flash 4.0.1 then run one click root Clockwork Mod 3.0.0.6 since it does not play nice with the imbedded 3.0.2.4 from 4.1.0 or you can Odin EB13 prerooted with CWM 3.0.0.6 then after converting to EXT 4 restore a nandroid of 4.0.1. Reflash 4.0.1 after that to disable journaling. Then Odin the EC05 modem.
EB13 link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
One click root CWM 3.0.0.6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612
If anyone needs Odin let me know.
charge the battery for an hour or so. then try to get into download mode again. if you can, stop and charge the battery to full. if you can't, it may actually be bricked. download mode uses alot of juice, and you can think you're bricked when you really just have a dead battery.

One of the guys with the bricked phones had extra batteries charged, and no go. Another just came back from the Sprint store and they ordered him another phone after trying to revive it for 2 hours. Whatever this is, it is really bricking the phones. It could be CWM 3.0.2.4 related since that was imbedded in the ROM.

I didn't take it seriously until the 4th bricked phone. I even tried to convince myself that I would be safe with the Genocide kernel on it. But then common sense took over and I went back to 4.0.1 and passed the word here.
After taking my brick in and they worked with it for a couple of hours they said they would replace it no questions asked. When I first went in I told them I took it off the charger and it wouldn't turn on. Nothing they could do would get it running.
None in stock so I wait until tomorrow or the next day.

And they don't eat the phones. They get refurbed and given to the next insurance claim.
They shouldn't be, but things like this is exactly the ammunition they need to lock down the bootloader, up insurance cost, etc. . .
I am not sure why anyone would think it would be okay to rob a bank and then tell everyone about it, but people seem to think posting in a public forum is some how annomymous.
No I am not saying anyone is going to get in trouble, but a simple google search pulls this stuff up.

Really? You are on the side of the insurance company? The same one that gets $7 a month from most people and then instead of giving people a new phone immediately makes them wait for a refurbed one, a couple of days. The same insurance that makes you wait a couple of days to get your keyboard fixed instead of giving you another phone. Believe me they are not losing any money. Don't cry for them.

Indeed, they are not losing anything. In fact, the insurance industry is the only field that hires more mathematicians than NASA. They make sure that no matter what, prices and deductibles are set so they profit. It's one of the longest going scams in history. I have TEP on 5 lines. So I don't feel bad when someone gets their money's worth.

Banks are insured too. So should we say the same thing when they're robbed? Hell, let's not even go after the people who robbed it because they're insured right?
Somebody has to eat the cost any time a claim is made. And unfortunately, it's the consumer. TEP used to be $5 a month. Nobody is forced to have insurance on their phone. And nobody is forced to load custom ROMs either. Don't try to justify the risk you took by thinking you're entitled to a claim any time you want it.
Auto insurance companies deny claims all the time because of negligence. Why should we all pay when someone is doing 150mph down the freeway? It's the same concept here.
Ok bonsai fans, please stop talking about getting phones replaced. We are starting to attract all the party poopers and well they are going to poop on your party(in a ****ty arnold voice)

This was about 2 or 3 months back. All was ok till about a month ago, when i dropped the phone to the floor. Noticed the screen issue shortly after. Not sure if the drop caused this tho. There are no scratches on the screen, and it had a silicone case on it.

I also have that problem, the problem is with the touchscreen not the software. At first, the touchscreen will not work for sometime you'll need to turn the screen off and on again. The problem will start more frequent. Then, the touchscreen on some part of the screen will not work at all. Only to fix is to call ATT for a repair. But, I live in Thailand and I brought mine at US. So, it not worth sending it back. I buy the touchscreen off ebay for $60 and change it myself. Working great now.
Pretty cheap on ebay, some for $40. My screen started acting the exact same way. I honestly believe it's heat damage. I remember reading that there are layers of the glass that are glued together. Extreme heat could cause the layers to come apart enough that sections of the screen are unusable.
My screen is exactly as the OP said, about a half-inch from the bar at the top. I noticed it soon after I started mounting the phone in my car near the top of the windshield where it could get some steady sunlight (obviously I didn't realize it was doing that until I noticed this problem).
I just ordered my replacement off ebay and will give it a shot. It's worth $40 if it'll let me use my phone properly again and hold off having to get a new phone prior to my upgrade price kicking in.
Hopefully installation won't be too hard. Good luck to the rest of ya!
This happen to my boyfriend's phone recently as well. I posted everywhere trying to find a solution but no one could help. It started to get worse after about a week or so where another section, towards the bottom of the screen, became unresponsive as well. My boyfriend finally called Motorola and sent it in for repair. We don't have ATT's insurance so we didn't try that way. Anyways, he's suppose to receive the phone this Monday...we'll see if it's fixed.

Did your touchscreen come with the adhesive? If not, you'll need to be extremely careful when you remove the old one cause you'll need the adhesive or you'll need the two sided tape with <0.25mm thick and apply it to around the touchscreen and remember to apply it as a close system or the dust will go under your screen.
If you need more info just PM me
I think i.ll call moto.

Did u get it back? Is it fixed?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Mine had the same issue, ive unlocked, rooted, modded the rom and radio, so no going to ATT, instead i took it to UbreakItIFixIt, just google them, best $99 i spent and kept all my custom goodies!
Sorry I haven't responded, hopefully you got your phone fixed but just in case you haven't...The phone came back and he hasn't had a problem with it whatsoever. The rep on the phone didn't know what was wrong with it or what they did to fix it but whatever they did, it worked. It took about a week or so to get the phone back and the only thing he had to pay for was shipping the phone out.
