[Q] Defy with Defy+ kernel - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
i've a problem with my Moto Defy.
Some days ago i tried to flash it and I make lot of mistakes. Now I have on it the CM-72 Nightly FOR MOTOROLA DEFY+
What should I do to reinstall the version for normal moto defy and not defy plus without bricking? It's a good idea doing that?
And what should I do to use the camera?
Thanks

[Q] How to know what kernel i have

I'd like to know how to check what kernel i have installed (GB or froyo kernel), independently from the ROM i have installed, is there any way?
may it help you.

So, if i didn't get it wrong... the regular defy only support the froyo kernel and the defy+ only the GB one??
or, i can flash a GB kernel on my defy (MB525)??

You can flash a GB kernel on Ur MB525 .. but GB kernel has some hardware constraints like in green lens MB525 camera doesn't work.. etc ..
So if ur's is a green lens MB525 don't flash GB kernel ..if not u can flash it..
as of now all stable ROMs like CM7 , Miui , CM9 Beta (Quarx builds) are froyo kernel based..

[Q]Difference between froyo kernel & GB kernel.

I am a noob here
I want to know what is the difference between froyo kernel an GB kernel?
I am using CyanogenMod-7.1.0-11-Defy.
Kernel version is 2.6.32.9-gb08c3c8 (I think is
Android 2.3.7
I have green lens defy MB525.
If the CyanogenMod-7.1.0 is based on GB kernel then what is the need or advantage of Froyo kernel?
AFAIK the Froyo kernel allow to be used on Defy with SOC module, which is not possible with GB kernel, cause is made for Defy+ and all Defy+ has Red Lens and Bayer module, the GB kernel allows too to record in 720p(In theory, still in process by Quarx i think)
Well so the Froyo kernel is needed for Defy with Green lens(SOC module) in a "Grosso Modo" way
Defy works with CM7 and CM9 Kernel
Hi there,
I'm a bit confused. I used cm7 kernel (2.6.32.9-gb08c3c8) and cm9-nightly by Quarx (08.03.2012) it worked fine. Camera etc.
Today I tried cm9 kernel (2.6.32.9-g21f1a48) and cm9-nightly (Defy+) by Quarx (05.03.2012) it works fine too. Camera etc.
I couldn't figure out if I have a green or red lense. (Log Cat didn't find "CameraCommon", what does that mean)
I'm happy that my defy works with both kernels and both versions of Quarx' builds but I would like to know which kernel and which version is the "best" for my phone
Thank you and Greetings to Quarx and Epsi
Dude - you need to figure this out to find out whether you have a bayer or SOC camera module.
The fact that you flashed a GB kernel (I think so) and your camera worked means that you probably have a red lense.
Play with logcat and find out!

Well I think I have green lens SOC module.

Yep, thats the SOC alright - also known as green lense.
Thats OK though.
I'm not sure why the Defy+ Kernel Worked with yours..
Oh well!
Can you tell which one has better performance?

Yay for you mate! You've got the new camera capable of 720p. Flash the GB kernel and away you go!
EDIT: I have kinda been sidetracked here.
TheStoke is fine, because he has the Bayer/Red Lense - he can flash anything.
Serpent Rider, you have Green Lense, which is OK, but you can only flash the Froyo Kernel, OK?
That way your camera will work properly.
Defy+ and Red Lense defy can flash both, and they will have 720p video recording capability with Defy+ Kernel.
Comprendo?
I know I have SOC module and I hardware limitation for 720p recording.
And I am fine with that.
But CM7 didn't have Froyo kernel.
CM7 upgraded the defy mb525 to GB kernel. From 2.2 to 2.3
Now why we are going back to Froyo kernel?
CM7 has GB and Froyo kernel version, on Defy you can use both of them, is not the same to say Android 2.3 and GB kernel, in fact the CM7 for Defy doesnt upgrade the Froyo kernel to GB, sure for that you miss the 720p rec. Of course you can install the CM7 GB kernel too, now you can use too Froyo kernel based ROMs on Defy+ flashing a new SBF appeared a time ago, that is possible because has a CG ver 6 and Froyo kernel

You need to understand that going from android 2.2 to 2.3 CUSTOM ROM
doesn't necessarily change your kernel to gingerbread kernel. CM7.1 runs
on froyo kernel.
There are a few gingerbread roms that use froyo kernel, like cm7. Then there are roms like
Ms2ginger that require gingerbread kernel.

[Q] Can a Defy+ Custom ROM run on Defy ??

i was wondering if i could try the latest CM9-NIGHTLY-120411-Defy+.zip(DEFY+ zip) on Defy running 4.04 (1204006)??
is it safe... what files will i need to use??? do i hv to try to the different kernel.. till now i had been using CM7 kernel...for my defy.

I am not sure, but previous versions by eppy, talking bout dec 2011 builds, were defy+ builds too and they worked on the normal defy. But I have forgotten, how or what was to do oO
I wouldn't try it, cause I am too afraid to do something wrong and brick. have you fully read through the CM9 thread? maybe there is kinda an answer.
Other possible problems, i thinnk can appeare are:
-Battery not loading, due to different battery properties
-Camera Problems
I would recommend, to wait these 2-3 days until a new defy build appears. This will be optimised for the "normal" defy.
I also heard people are experiencing problems with 1104 build...
You will have to flash the gingerbread kernel first (defy+ kernel) and afterwards you may have battery problems.
And if you have defy green lense your camera wont work.

Yup, as mentioned in this thread you can install in red lens defy after flashing the defy+/gb kernel but you also need a battery patch as the charge ratings are different for defy and defy+.

You may have to find the patch for battery first which works with DFP-231. Other than that, I don't think there should be any problem.
I only have a Defy Plus. So, can't test it.

[Q] Help the noob!

Hey guys,
My wife was complaning about her Defy being slow so i dediced to take a look and install a custom rom. As a SGS 2 user, i'm very confused with Defy
My wife has;
MB525 (i assume this is Defy not Defy+) with Android 2.2.1 and Green Lens
I've read lots of topics and understood the rooting process, etc. but my biggest confusion is with the kernel and roms. I'm seeing froyo and GB kernel, what is the difference between them? Which kernel should i use for my Defy? The roms are kernel specific? If i have froyo or GB kernel, i can't use some roms?
And lastly, which roms you guys recommend?
Thanks in advance!
first of all Motorola sucks!!!
defy's bootloader is locked..so no custom kernel...hence we use official kernels..
as u know dere r 2 kernels..ICS and GB kernel..defy with green lens can use only froyo kernel..if u flash a GB kernel on defy with green lens then u wont have camera(dere is a patch)..
and i think all roms support froyo kernel..so u shouldn't be having any problem..
new defy with red lens and defy+ can run gb kernel..dere isnt much difference in performance between gb and froyo kernel but gb kernel give better battery life..thats the only visible difference..
Go through guides and threads and i m sure u will understand better..
try many roms..start with CM7..then jump to CM9..if u get bored then do try WajkMIUI..they look pretty good
Welcome to the world of Locked Bootloader
The ROM I would recommend
I have exactly the same phone as you have. The best ROM would be:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
Its Android version 2.3.7
Its from Quarx and its fast, stable and give long battery up time. You can trust it 100%.
ICS is under development.
Please hit the Thanks button if this was useful.
The defy+ is basically the defy with a better battery, 100% red lenses and official gingerbread. Therefor the kernel for the defy+ is called the gingerbread kernel.
In this kernel there it's only support for the red lens module. So you can't use your cam on this kernel.
(flashing this kernel is done best from recovery as you have no danger of not ably to go back).
A ROM made for one kernel can't be used on an other.
The other thing is the battery. Most defy+ roms use the battery files of the defy+. I think the builds from epsy use tyre defy files (he doesn't have a defy+) although this just needs a patch.

Yes, I'm using Quarx's Defy+ CM9 on my red lens Defy with the kernel and it's working great and I get more than 48 hours of battery life with normal use.

In Defy > General forum there's a thread about Quarx CM9 builds for Froyo and GB kernel. In the first post there's a patch for Defy red lens using Defy+ roms. I suggest you can try that. Did you took a nandroid backup before flashing that rom, if the patch does not work, try restoring it. I have never faced the battery issue, probably because I used Quarx's CM7 builds. Never tried Fuzz's, and now am scared to..
