[Q] Help the noob! - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
My wife was complaning about her Defy being slow so i dediced to take a look and install a custom rom. As a SGS 2 user, i'm very confused with Defy
My wife has;
MB525 (i assume this is Defy not Defy+) with Android 2.2.1 and Green Lens
I've read lots of topics and understood the rooting process, etc. but my biggest confusion is with the kernel and roms. I'm seeing froyo and GB kernel, what is the difference between them? Which kernel should i use for my Defy? The roms are kernel specific? If i have froyo or GB kernel, i can't use some roms?
And lastly, which roms you guys recommend?
Thanks in advance!

first of all Motorola sucks!!!
defy's bootloader is locked..so no custom kernel...hence we use official kernels..
as u know dere r 2 kernels..ICS and GB kernel..defy with green lens can use only froyo kernel..if u flash a GB kernel on defy with green lens then u wont have camera(dere is a patch)..
and i think all roms support froyo kernel..so u shouldn't be having any problem..
new defy with red lens and defy+ can run gb kernel..dere isnt much difference in performance between gb and froyo kernel but gb kernel give better battery life..thats the only visible difference..
Go through guides and threads and i m sure u will understand better..
try many roms..start with CM7..then jump to CM9..if u get bored then do try WajkMIUI..they look pretty good

The ROM I would recommend
I have exactly the same phone as you have. The best ROM would be:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
Its Android version 2.3.7
Its from Quarx and its fast, stable and give long battery up time. You can trust it 100%.
ICS is under development.
Please hit the Thanks button if this was useful.

The defy+ is basically the defy with a better battery, 100% red lenses and official gingerbread. Therefor the kernel for the defy+ is called the gingerbread kernel.
In this kernel there it's only support for the red lens module. So you can't use your cam on this kernel.
(flashing this kernel is done best from recovery as you have no danger of not ably to go back).
A ROM made for one kernel can't be used on an other.
The other thing is the battery. Most defy+ roms use the battery files of the defy+. I think the builds from epsy use tyre defy files (he doesn't have a defy+) although this just needs a patch.

You mean there is a patch to make the camera work with a gb kernel and green lens defy? I can't find any...

[Q] Flash Defy+ *.sbf with Android 2.3.6 to red lens Defy?

Hi
I did read in the dev section, that there is a new *.sbf from the Defy+ with Android 2.3.6. which can be flashed on the Defy. I know there is no going backl from that if flashing the full sbf.
As far as i know the Defy with red lens (bayer device) is basically a Defy+.
So what i wanna know...will the camera work with this new sbf...basically, will everything work?
Nope... I don't think the red lens camera is working fine as of now...
Btw... was wondering if we flash the nandroid of the 2.3.6 then can we return to frayo?
Sent from my MB525 using xda premium
hmmm. darn it... and here i was thinking the defy with red lens is quite the same as defy+. Obviously there are differences in the end.
So no experiments for me then...need the camera. hope it will start working at some point. Epsylon3 wrote, that with defy+ kernle some things are working easier and that they would probably jump to that kernel. But without Cam... :-(
Regarding the nandroid...sory..not sure if u can return..i think yes...but no guarantees ton that. U will have to read the thread in dev section from walther79

Someone already flashed this full SBF on a Defy MB525, its working perfectly for him. As long as you have a Red lens, and dont care about downgrading, you can go for it
ah... two different opinions
From what i was reading in the meantime it wont work. At least thats what Walter79 wrote
Anyways...am on CM9 now and thats ok for now.. if i would use the newer Defy+ Kernel+Bootloader that wont work at the moment.

No... the ROM does work on Red lens Defy and Defy+, that's a fact.
What wont work is the Fixed SBF, cause it needs the new Firmware to work... which is only possible to have by flashing the full SBF.
Walter also said he is going to base the new MSGinger in this rom, and make it work on Green lens.
But the rom DOES work on Red Lens defy.
thx again... good to know for sure.... hoping that way the red lens defy will be compatible with any updates from moto for defy+
help me to

[Q] How to know what kernel i have

I'd like to know how to check what kernel i have installed (GB or froyo kernel), independently from the ROM i have installed, is there any way?
may it help you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450026
So, if i didn't get it wrong... the regular defy only support the froyo kernel and the defy+ only the GB one??
or, i can flash a GB kernel on my defy (MB525)??

You can flash a GB kernel on Ur MB525 .. but GB kernel has some hardware constraints like in green lens MB525 camera doesn't work.. etc ..
So if ur's is a green lens MB525 don't flash GB kernel ..if not u can flash it..
as of now all stable ROMs like CM7 , Miui , CM9 Beta (Quarx builds) are froyo kernel based..

[Q] About Kernels and CM9

First of all, I'd like to thank all you guys for all great work here on XDA, thank you very much!!
I have a Motorola Defy (MB525) with Red Lens and although I've changed the ROM of my Defy many times, I'm still new and I have some questions:
The first ROM I've installed on my Defy, was CM7 (unofficial, ported from Quarx), then changed to MIUI, then came back to CM7 (official) and now, I'm using CM9 (24/Feb) from Epsylon3/Quarx (from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432100 ) and this build is for Froyo Kernel, and, in this same thread, I've read that GB Kernel is better for CM9 and my Red Lens Defy...
My question is: can I flash CM9 for GB (with GB Kernel) and later return to CM9 for Froyo (and Froyo Kernel), or MIUI, or CM7 if I wanted to??
If I flash CM9 for GB (with GB Kernel), can I go back to stock if I need to??
Well, sorry for this noob questions and sorry for my bad english
well, my personal opinion is, that GB is always better for defy with red lens... only reason for froyo is the missing green lense support in gb, i think ...
i also think, that the kernel for these cm9 roms are flashed with an fixed sbf ... so it doesn't matter, what you have as stock system ...
that is no pro-answer, just a few thinks, i've read and hopefully understood ...
the whole romchange of defy is not easy to understand cause of that locked bootloader things and so on ... i also got a crazy problem with my defy+ as you can read in my thread ...
hopefully, we will get the answers we need to get our systems running as good as we like ...

Does that mean that those of with green lenses won't be able to upgrade to gb kernel if we want our cameras to work? (i mean by the time there's a cm9 stable)
i flashed cm9 feb. 29 release in my green lens defy.. and have camera preview with autofocus on it.. btw i flashed the cm7 kernel.. and i think cm7 kernel is froyo kernel.. cm9 kernel is gingerbread kernel.. anyone can elp me? how to move apps from phone to sd card?
I've found this:

I packed the two different kernels into clockwork flashable packages.
1. Flash either a nightly or restore a nandroid.
2. Flash either CM7_Kernel-signed.zip or CM9_Kernel-signed.zip; depending on what you've installed.
3. Reboot.
CM7_Kernel-signed.zip
CM9_Kernel-signed.zip

that means that I can go to CM9 (with GB Kernel) and then, if I want/need to, go back to CM9 (with Froyo Kernel) or any ROM based on Froyo Kernel, right??

You're right. I did this and works. Just flash the kernel based on the corresponding ROM and you're good to go.

[Q] Motorola Defy Kernels

hi guys, I would like to ask experienced users what is the difference between the kernels we used on our Defy(s)
Froyo Kernel vs Gingerbread kernel vs Walter79's Kernel
I first encountered this kernel upon viewing the CM9 update thread
I have a red lense defy and the very first rom I flashed was the official CM7.1 so I am aware I do have a Froyo Kernel running on this bad boy.
what is the difference/ advantages?
which is better?
is it safe to flash one over the other?
is it easy to flash? like how we flash roms? we can always go back to to Froyo kernel from the gingerbread or walter kernel and vice versa?
I think a lot of noobs would appreciate your answers.
I will edit this post and add your answers so that others may find it useful as well
some answers--------------------------------------------

Ans:My experience says that the main advantage of using GB kernel is battery life..
Defy-4.5.3-109_DPP-11-kernel is well known for awesome battery life.
which is better?
Ans: I personally think Walter79's kernel is better in every sense.Unfortunately for old defy owners(SOC camera green lens), camera wont work on new kernels without any extra fix..
is it safe to flash one over the other?
Ans: Yea its 100% safe..i personally never had any problem as such..but i heard few people faced bootloop..in any case you can always go back to froyo or watever kernel u were using
is it easy to flash? like how we flash roms? we can always go back to to Froyo kernel from the gingerbread or walter kernel and vice versa?
Ans: As i have already mentioned above, we can always switch between these kernels..just remember not to flash any GB kernel based sbf or else u will be stuck! before flashing any unknown or less known kernel PLEASE USE THE SEARCH option and know more about the kernel and related problems.

i would add, that many people state that GB kernel (2.3) has much better 3d performance - games are running much better than on froyo kernel.
It's easy and safe to switch between kernels, you should only remember that switching kernel must come with installing appropriate rom

Thanks for this information bro!!
Please also share Camera fix (link) for GB kernel for SOC Camera and also mentioned whether downgrade is possible. Your help will be appreciated.
anyone correct me but we can do dual boot but can't install dual kernels?
say
cm7 (froyo kernel ) as system
cm9 (gingerbread kernel) on SD
and will Gingerbread kernel work with cm7 for the defy, red lense?

No, can't do it. Both ROM's should share the same kernel.
thanks Auris, would you be able to add anything or negate anything that was previously posted about the Defy Kernels?
Please help me a bit with those kernels! I have a defy+ with 2.3.6 base and one of those newest official build nandroids. Can I flash Walter's kernel? ^^
Just don't want any bootloader error!

thanks, guys. i've been looking for the answers
Is it okay to flash defy+ rom zip and then the gb kernel on a green lens defy? To me battery life is more important than camera

Walter79's kernel allows 720p recording for defy red lens.
Defy kernel Flash
i have a motorola defy green lens currently running cm9 4.0.4 (camera's not working but i don't care much for the camera ) . ok here's my problem i'm trying to flash a different kernel on my defy.. the current kernel im running is 2.6.32.9 cdt 2011 but i need better performance and i tried to flash semaphore kernel. the flash was successful but i see no changes and also in the settings>about phone the kernel version hasnt changed. i need help so that i can flash new kernel properly.. thanks
Hi!
I realize this is a very old thread, but it seems to be one of the few addressing the (dis)advantages of the froyo vs the GB kernel (independently of the ROM!).
The 720p-recording is really not important to me, but battery life is and I just read here that it would be better on GB kernel.
Do any of you have further experience with regards to battery-life difference between Froyo and GB kernels (not ROMs)!? Is it a big difference (to what extent or through which features?)
I have a MB525 with red lens and Froyo kernel, so I could go for a GB-kernel.
I've recently rooted my smartphone and flashed WIUI (3.1.27, GB&MIUI-based) on it, because (1) my phone was slowing down, (2) I wanted not to have any bloatware anymore and (3) I wanted some apps that only run on Gingerbread/2.3+ (e.g. the offline-language-package-feature from Google Translate). Almost everything is now better.
BUT, my battery life got worse! I've now down-volted my smartphone to a stable point and set it to 'smartassv2', but am looking for further improvement for the battery life. As WIUI can be installed both on froyo and GB-kernel, I might also update the Kernel...but only want to take the plunge if it really would make a difference...
any advice or experience is welcome!

Should I buy Defy+? Modding question

I am looking to buy a new phone.
My primary neeeds are -
1. Music.
2. Sports tracker.
3. Browsing
4. General stuff
Other than that I am looking for modding. So have some question, no doubt defy has great support for custom roms, but what about defy + ?
1. Is there MIUI rom (stable/full functional) rom for defy+ ?
2. Same above for CM mod.
3. Is the MIUI rom based on ICS ?
4. IS there any ICS rom for defy+ ?
Please do let me know since I urgently need a phone. Or -
Should i buy sony Xperia Sola with dual core SOC, 8gb space. Since Sola is new there is no modding support and I am not sure how good it will be in future.
Please I am looking forward to your inputs.
Regards
better go for one with an unlocked bootloader
1. Is there MIUI rom (stable/full functional) rom for defy+ ?
NO. MIUI is only for the normal defy (froyo kernel) simply put.
2. Same above for CM mod.
Yes, Quarx builds CM7 nighlies for defy+
3. Is the MIUI rom based on ICS ?
Yes, WIUI v4(EDIT: froyo kernel, not for defy+). Status: beta
4. IS there any ICS rom for defy+ ?
Yes, unofficial CM9 nightlies by our dear developers Epsylon3 and Quarx ++
Should I buy Defy+?
NO
Or - Should i buy sony Xperia Sola with dual core SOC, 8gb space.
Yes
My reasons to buy the Xperia Sola:
Newer
Upgrade to Android 4, Ice Cream Sandwich (official)
Dual core
Most importantly: UNLOCKABLE BOOTOLADER
Check out this too.
Maybe
Well, it depends.
The Defy+ is a smartphone for those who tend to be less carefull with their devices.
There are a few lacks, the digitizer tends to fail on allot of defy+'s.
so does the loudspeaker. But if you do get a proper working defy+, i can't say it's a bad phone. granted it's not the fasted.
My point is, for 270 bucks you cannot get a better phone then the defy+. It is now rootable and can run custom roms.
It's strong, durable and good looking. very nice quality for such a low price.
Thanks for the reply, will settle for Sola.
So can I hope for future support for custom roms like MIUI ?
custom rom for sola or defy+?
1. Is there MIUI rom (stable/full functional) rom for defy+ ?
MIUI ROMs based onn the Gingerbread kernel have started showing up in the last week, so I'm sure there'll be a lot development in that area.
2. Same above for CM mod.
Yup, there are even three variations to choose from - Epsylon's, Quarx's and FuZZ's. All stable with slightly different features.
3. Is the MIUI rom based on ICS ?
Yes, there are MIUI v4 ROMs available for Gingerbread kernels (like I mentioned, they started showing up recently). I know about two of them - XIUI and XIUI+WIUI and I think there's more.
4. IS there any ICS rom for defy+ ?
Apart from MIUI v4, there are three variations of CM9 available, by the same authors of the CM ROM's.
I like my DEFY+ because it's super compact, very sturdy and waterproof. The screen is brilliant and how could it not be with this pixel density. I do wish it was a bit more powerful, though, in all ways - CPU, RAM, camera, but I'm not sure why, since it has never failed or annoyed me so far It's a very enjoyable phone.
I can't speak of the Sola as I have never used it :/ How much higher is the price? I can see that it has a significantly smaller capacity battery with a dual core CPU, I'd say that's a minus. About the dimensions, I see that the Sola is a bit longer and somewhat thinner... I think thinner is not a better option for these 3.7" screen phones, so I'd go for defy+'s shortness on that one...
I'd say that's enough from me
*EDIT* This time I actually read your whole first post So, I guess you didn't know... DEFY+ = red lens DEFY with a higher capacity battery So, yeah, it's the same phone, it only comes clocked at 1ghz vs 800mhz that was set on the standard DEFY. Doesn't matter, both work fine @1.2ghz And, yeah, the same ROMs are used for both phones... There's even a Froyo sbf available for DEFY+, but there's no use anymore since the Gingerbread MIUI showed up...
Whatever, wish you the best with whichever phone you choose
I run MIUI_Scotland_2.6.1 version which is based off gb kernel and built for defy +. It is pretty stable and smooth.
My phone is regular defy red lens with the above rom and with Walter dht22 kernel.
