[Q] About Kernels and CM9 - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First of all, I'd like to thank all you guys for all great work here on XDA, thank you very much!!
I have a Motorola Defy (MB525) with Red Lens and although I've changed the ROM of my Defy many times, I'm still new and I have some questions:
The first ROM I've installed on my Defy, was CM7 (unofficial, ported from Quarx), then changed to MIUI, then came back to CM7 (official) and now, I'm using CM9 (24/Feb) from Epsylon3/Quarx (from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432100 ) and this build is for Froyo Kernel, and, in this same thread, I've read that GB Kernel is better for CM9 and my Red Lens Defy...
My question is: can I flash CM9 for GB (with GB Kernel) and later return to CM9 for Froyo (and Froyo Kernel), or MIUI, or CM7 if I wanted to??
If I flash CM9 for GB (with GB Kernel), can I go back to stock if I need to??
Well, sorry for this noob questions and sorry for my bad english

well, my personal opinion is, that GB is always better for defy with red lens... only reason for froyo is the missing green lense support in gb, i think ...
i also think, that the kernel for these cm9 roms are flashed with an fixed sbf ... so it doesn't matter, what you have as stock system ...
that is no pro-answer, just a few thinks, i've read and hopefully understood ...
the whole romchange of defy is not easy to understand cause of that locked bootloader things and so on ... i also got a crazy problem with my defy+ as you can read in my thread ...
hopefully, we will get the answers we need to get our systems running as good as we like ...

Does that mean that those of with green lenses won't be able to upgrade to gb kernel if we want our cameras to work? (i mean by the time there's a cm9 stable)

i flashed cm9 feb. 29 release in my green lens defy.. and have camera preview with autofocus on it.. btw i flashed the cm7 kernel.. and i think cm7 kernel is froyo kernel.. cm9 kernel is gingerbread kernel.. anyone can elp me? how to move apps from phone to sd card?

I've found this:

I packed the two different kernels into clockwork flashable packages.
1. Flash either a nightly or restore a nandroid.
2. Flash either CM7_Kernel-signed.zip or CM9_Kernel-signed.zip; depending on what you've installed.
3. Reboot.
CM7_Kernel-signed.zip
CM9_Kernel-signed.zip

that means that I can go to CM9 (with GB Kernel) and then, if I want/need to, go back to CM9 (with Froyo Kernel) or any ROM based on Froyo Kernel, right??

You're right. I did this and works. Just flash the kernel based on the corresponding ROM and you're good to go.

[Q] Defy Plus MIUI

I am currently trying to get full battery of my defy+ to work under MIUI. Being CM based i assumed it would work with the CM battery patch. It doesn't however. I know which files need to be replaced, would it be a good idea to just grab the files from the CM9 defy+ build and replace them?
For those that are interested doesn't work = battery only showing full with question mark icon.
Having same problem and seems there is total silence in all forums concerning this issue. If you manage to solve it please let me know !
Hey, guys I'm using MIUI Pikachu Edition by einsteinno1 and it has full DEFY+ support (battery charges up to 100%)
It's overall an awesome ROM, after trying CM7.2, latest WIUI and MS2G v3, Pikachu is the best one for me.
My DEFY+ was on 2.3.5, so I flashed it down to Froyo before flashing Pikachu
Cheers!
I have the same Defy 2.3.5 but I don't know how to install a diffrent ROM/interface ...

Search this wonderful Forum - There are many threads telling you how to install a new ROM / interface
Well then I will definitely give Miui Pikachu edition a try As far as I understand Froyo version is the best to use to flash Miui right ?
Hi all,
About the Defy+ battery. This battery is only support by GB kernel. So nevermind the patch you applied, you'll always have a bad result. This patch works on CM 7.2 Defy + because this rom doesn't incluse the kernel and use the GB one of your phone.
So the only solution is what nisky+ said... Flash before the 2.3.6 SBF on the dev forum who allow you to flash a Froyo kernel first...

Froyo is the safest way, yes, and it will work without problems. It should work when flashed over 2.3.4, too, but I haven't tried that, myself.
@mdt24 Then how come I don't have battery problems now when Froyo's kernel is used
P.S. It's niksy, not nisky
Hi niksy ;-)
It's because I think this rom doesn't incluse kernel, so you always run a 2.3.4 GB Kernel...
quote from Miui Pikachu edition : IMPORANT!!! this Rom works only on Defy or Defy+ with Froyo Kernel or Gingerbread 2.3.4/5 Kernel. All with 2.3.6 Kernel have to downgrade to Froyo Kernel, because the new Motorola Kernel won't work with MIUI. Just use this Tutorial on XDA Developers
But I could be wrong in my deduction, so Please, can you give us the number of the kernel you have with this pikachu rom ?...
What I did before was downgrade from 2.3.6 using the sbf the dev provided that allows you to downgrade to froyo then I flashed Miui official rom and still had problems with battery. Kernel version currently is : 2.6.32.9gb08c3c8 if that makes any sense to you cause I personally just don't know anything bout kernels... I just downloaded pikachu Miui and will give a try soon and share the results with you
Hey all, thanks for the replies. I already know about the limitations of the patch and which versions the driver works with. That is why i flashed the 2.3.4 kernel before using MIUI and therefore the defy + patch. I just don't get why it doesn't work, do i need to use a defy+ kernel?
I will grab the files used in the working MIUI Defy+ rom and package them as a flashable .zip for other users.

Mate, you are right about the ROM, it doesn't include any kernel, but I said that I flashed that special version 6 Froyo (that's a full sbf) before flashing Pikachu!

The kernel you mentionned is a froyo kernel...
As you all I try to understand why it's possible that the defy+'s battery works or not with the patch. It's sure it works with a 2.3.6 GB kernel and a patch for the system (battd, lib) used by the rom if the new rom doesn't include a kernel.
It seems that if the rom include a froyo kernel the patch doesn't work...
So... may be a way to understand

Yes but I'm pretty sure than this special version has a GB kernel. It's just the bootloader who accept all kind of kernel...
Check your Kernel number, I think you must have something like this 2.6.32.9-gbdd614e...
Ok after some testing I can tell you that the battery charged to 100% only the first time I booted.Since then it has only charged till 90%. I also did calibrate the battery the first time I flashed the Rom but no results

It's 2.6.32.9-gb08c3c8 - the one you said it's Froyo Just checked!
And for the battery... First time it charged to 100%, this time it stuck at 90%. Quite weird... But, that is with Froyo kernel, as we've come to conclude.
But, on the other hand, my bro's got a DEFY+, too, with CM7.2 on it and with Gingerbread kernel (27th January DEFY+ nightly) and the battery goes to 100% every time. I will test Pikachu on a Gingerbread kernel, cause I can't really live with this bug :-/ Will let you know how it went, now I'm off to find a 2.3.4 sbf!
I had the same idea and have already downloaded a full 2.3.4 GB sbf to check just that !
i wish a 2.3.4 GB kernel can fix that, although I think the only kernel able to fix this is 2.3.5 and above
Hi.. I m new to android... I just want to ask how can I add music contol to notification toogle bar like that in cm mod..... I m using pikachu edition on my defy plus and its really great ... I haven't faced any problem till now.. thank u dev for such a beautiful rom...
hey buddy....i was runing on 2.3.5 than i tried a rom called [Retail British] here ; http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_jordanplus/list.php
then
i upgreade it by automatic update so it became 2.3.6
then i again flash it through [Retail British] after that my device not able to power on just with white led light but i'm able to flash the device ..so can u suggest me a suitable rom for my device [Motorola defy+] ??
HELP pls
Thanks !!

[Q] Motorola Defy Kernels

hi guys, I would like to ask experienced users what is the difference between the kernels we used on our Defy(s)
Froyo Kernel vs Gingerbread kernel vs Walter79's Kernel
I first encountered this kernel upon viewing the CM9 update thread
I have a red lense defy and the very first rom I flashed was the official CM7.1 so I am aware I do have a Froyo Kernel running on this bad boy.
what is the difference/ advantages?
which is better?
is it safe to flash one over the other?
is it easy to flash? like how we flash roms? we can always go back to to Froyo kernel from the gingerbread or walter kernel and vice versa?
I think a lot of noobs would appreciate your answers.
I will edit this post and add your answers so that others may find it useful as well

Ans:My experience says that the main advantage of using GB kernel is battery life..
Defy-4.5.3-109_DPP-11-kernel is well known for awesome battery life.

Ans: I personally think Walter79's kernel is better in every sense.Unfortunately for old defy owners(SOC camera green lens), camera wont work on new kernels without any extra fix..
is it safe to flash one over the other?
Ans: Yea its 100% safe..i personally never had any problem as such..but i heard few people faced bootloop..in any case you can always go back to froyo or watever kernel u were using
is it easy to flash? like how we flash roms? we can always go back to to Froyo kernel from the gingerbread or walter kernel and vice versa?
Ans: As i have already mentioned above, we can always switch between these kernels..just remember not to flash any GB kernel based sbf or else u will be stuck! before flashing any unknown or less known kernel PLEASE USE THE SEARCH option and know more about the kernel and related problems.

cm9 (gingerbread kernel) on SD
and will Gingerbread kernel work with cm7 for the defy, red lense?

No, can't do it. Both ROM's should share the same kernel.
thanks Auris, would you be able to add anything or negate anything that was previously posted about the Defy Kernels?

Defy kernel Flash
i have a motorola defy green lens currently running cm9 4.0.4 (camera's not working but i don't care much for the camera ) . ok here's my problem i'm trying to flash a different kernel on my defy.. the current kernel im running is 2.6.32.9 cdt 2011 but i need better performance and i tried to flash semaphore kernel. the flash was successful but i see no changes and also in the settings>about phone the kernel version hasnt changed. i need help so that i can flash new kernel properly.. thanks
Hi!
I realize this is a very old thread, but it seems to be one of the few addressing the (dis)advantages of the froyo vs the GB kernel (independently of the ROM!).
The 720p-recording is really not important to me, but battery life is and I just read here that it would be better on GB kernel.
Do any of you have further experience with regards to battery-life difference between Froyo and GB kernels (not ROMs)!? Is it a big difference (to what extent or through which features?)
I have a MB525 with red lens and Froyo kernel, so I could go for a GB-kernel.
I've recently rooted my smartphone and flashed WIUI (3.1.27, GB&MIUI-based) on it, because (1) my phone was slowing down, (2) I wanted not to have any bloatware anymore and (3) I wanted some apps that only run on Gingerbread/2.3+ (e.g. the offline-language-package-feature from Google Translate). Almost everything is now better.
BUT, my battery life got worse! I've now down-volted my smartphone to a stable point and set it to 'smartassv2', but am looking for further improvement for the battery life. As WIUI can be installed both on froyo and GB-kernel, I might also update the Kernel...but only want to take the plunge if it really would make a difference...
any advice or experience is welcome!

[Q]Latest/Best Kernels for Froyo and Gingerbread

For the sake of updatedness, what are the best kernels for Froyo and Gingerbread?
Also, I flashed a GB kernel to try out a CM9 build. Now I want to install the official 7.2 RC. I need to flash a Froyo kernel again right?
There are no custom kernels for the defy as it has a locked bootloader, only the official signed motorola ones, the froyo which came with defy and gb which came with defy+.
For cm7 you need froyo kernel, just reflash it. Cm9 have 2 builds - one for froyo kernel and one for gb kernel. I think the green lense defys may only work with froyo kernel.

What abt the DHT kernel from Walter. I think its not ripped from defy or defy+.
It is used in Motoginger roms
Hi, sorry for my first noob question ...
Quite the same question as the original :
I found here on the github (I can't post link) that 2.2.2-177 & 2.2.2-179 have a different Kernel hashes 2.6.32.9-ga28fcc4 or 2.6.32.9-gb08c3c8.
I thought the latest CM7.2 were containing the lastest kernel id 179.
When I look at mine I have 2.6.32.9-ga28fcc4, which seems to be 177 ...
I'm actually on cm7.2 20120509-NIGHTLY-jordan, from the official nightlies ...
here (on the dowload page from Epsylon3, can't post ...) i found the 179 kernel, would it be necessary to flash it in order to have a matching kernel with the lastest nightlies ?
Only talking of froyo kernels ...

So do I think. However some people are often saying that they flashed a cm9 or whatever kernel... what do they mean by this.
P.S.: There are some attempts to boot another kernel with the help of kexec/2ndboot, but currently only with minor succes afaik.

[Q] Help the noob!

Hey guys,
My wife was complaning about her Defy being slow so i dediced to take a look and install a custom rom. As a SGS 2 user, i'm very confused with Defy
My wife has;
MB525 (i assume this is Defy not Defy+) with Android 2.2.1 and Green Lens
I've read lots of topics and understood the rooting process, etc. but my biggest confusion is with the kernel and roms. I'm seeing froyo and GB kernel, what is the difference between them? Which kernel should i use for my Defy? The roms are kernel specific? If i have froyo or GB kernel, i can't use some roms?
And lastly, which roms you guys recommend?
Thanks in advance!
first of all Motorola sucks!!!
defy's bootloader is locked..so no custom kernel...hence we use official kernels..
as u know dere r 2 kernels..ICS and GB kernel..defy with green lens can use only froyo kernel..if u flash a GB kernel on defy with green lens then u wont have camera(dere is a patch)..
and i think all roms support froyo kernel..so u shouldn't be having any problem..
new defy with red lens and defy+ can run gb kernel..dere isnt much difference in performance between gb and froyo kernel but gb kernel give better battery life..thats the only visible difference..
Go through guides and threads and i m sure u will understand better..
try many roms..start with CM7..then jump to CM9..if u get bored then do try WajkMIUI..they look pretty good
Welcome to the world of Locked Bootloader
The ROM I would recommend
I have exactly the same phone as you have. The best ROM would be:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
Its Android version 2.3.7
Its from Quarx and its fast, stable and give long battery up time. You can trust it 100%.
ICS is under development.
Please hit the Thanks button if this was useful.
The defy+ is basically the defy with a better battery, 100% red lenses and official gingerbread. Therefor the kernel for the defy+ is called the gingerbread kernel.
In this kernel there it's only support for the red lens module. So you can't use your cam on this kernel.
(flashing this kernel is done best from recovery as you have no danger of not ably to go back).
A ROM made for one kernel can't be used on an other.
The other thing is the battery. Most defy+ roms use the battery files of the defy+. I think the builds from epsy use tyre defy files (he doesn't have a defy+) although this just needs a patch.

[Q] how to install GB kernel on froyo CM9

hello guys, thanks for all the patience with me haha, but i dont understand it anymore.. im currently running CM9 from epps on my red lens defy with froyo kernel.
Since its a little bit to buggy for me i want to change to a different CM9 but also want the GB kernel.
What to do? just download the CM9 GB build and install it just the same way as i did with CM9 froyo kernel?
I found a thread on this forum that seems really complicated and a little bit to mutch work but i want to do it the right way and not mess up my phone.

U should also download cm9 kernel.zip from the auris's thread in defy general thread, flash it also..

yeaaay it worked, pretty awesome. also it didnt delete anything from my phone which comes in pretty handy when updating the rom. so i dont have to backup everything again. camera is working fine also!
I'm in the same situation. What I want is to install the GB kernel, and yet remain on my CM9, and still be able to flash my original stock froyo SBF if need be, and was wondering if it would just be enough to flash the GB kernel found in Epsylon3's site, and if so, which one (since there are two there)? Secondly, would that GB kernel enable all 4 CPU frequencies?
I'm still on my original stock SBF, which is JORLA_U3_3.4.2_108-2, and has CG31.smg version = 4
Third, would I be able to flash Defy+ ROMs, such as the CM10 roms developed by Quarx, which, as far as I understand, have a custom kernel, and yet still be able to flash back to my original stock froyo SBF?
