[Q]Difference between froyo kernel & GB kernel. - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am a noob here
I want to know what is the difference between froyo kernel an GB kernel?
I am using CyanogenMod-7.1.0-11-Defy.
Kernel version is 2.6.32.9-gb08c3c8 (I think is
Android 2.3.7
I have green lens defy MB525.
If the CyanogenMod-7.1.0 is based on GB kernel then what is the need or advantage of Froyo kernel?

AFAIK the Froyo kernel allow to be used on Defy with SOC module, which is not possible with GB kernel, cause is made for Defy+ and all Defy+ has Red Lens and Bayer module, the GB kernel allows too to record in 720p(In theory, still in process by Quarx i think)
Well so the Froyo kernel is needed for Defy with Green lens(SOC module) in a "Grosso Modo" way

Defy works with CM7 and CM9 Kernel
Hi there,
I'm a bit confused. I used cm7 kernel (2.6.32.9-gb08c3c8) and cm9-nightly by Quarx (08.03.2012) it worked fine. Camera etc.
Today I tried cm9 kernel (2.6.32.9-g21f1a48) and cm9-nightly (Defy+) by Quarx (05.03.2012) it works fine too. Camera etc.
I couldn't figure out if I have a green or red lense. (Log Cat didn't find "CameraCommon", what does that mean)
I'm happy that my defy works with both kernels and both versions of Quarx' builds but I would like to know which kernel and which version is the "best" for my phone
Thank you and Greetings to Quarx and Epsi

Dude - you need to figure this out to find out whether you have a bayer or SOC camera module.
The fact that you flashed a GB kernel (I think so) and your camera worked means that you probably have a red lense.
Play with logcat and find out!

Thanks

Well I think I have green lens SOC module.

Yep, thats the SOC alright - also known as green lense.
Thats OK though.
I'm not sure why the Defy+ Kernel Worked with yours..
Oh well!
Can you tell which one has better performance?

Yay for you mate! You've got the new camera capable of 720p. Flash the GB kernel and away you go!
EDIT: I have kinda been sidetracked here.
TheStoke is fine, because he has the Bayer/Red Lense - he can flash anything.
Serpent Rider, you have Green Lense, which is OK, but you can only flash the Froyo Kernel, OK?
That way your camera will work properly.
Defy+ and Red Lense defy can flash both, and they will have 720p video recording capability with Defy+ Kernel.
Comprendo?

I know I have SOC module and I hardware limitation for 720p recording.
And I am fine with that.
But CM7 didn't have Froyo kernel.
CM7 upgraded the defy mb525 to GB kernel. From 2.2 to 2.3
Now why we are going back to Froyo kernel?

CM7 has GB and Froyo kernel version, on Defy you can use both of them, is not the same to say Android 2.3 and GB kernel, in fact the CM7 for Defy doesnt upgrade the Froyo kernel to GB, sure for that you miss the 720p rec. Of course you can install the CM7 GB kernel too, now you can use too Froyo kernel based ROMs on Defy+ flashing a new SBF appeared a time ago, that is possible because has a CG ver 6 and Froyo kernel

You need to understand that going from android 2.2 to 2.3 CUSTOM ROM
doesn't necessarily change your kernel to gingerbread kernel. CM7.1 runs
on froyo kernel.
There are a few gingerbread roms that use froyo kernel, like cm7. Then there are roms like
Ms2ginger that require gingerbread kernel.

[Q] Anybody tried "Kang ROM" for Defy/Defy+ ??

I´m not sure if the version run on my defy with the defy+ kernel ...!!
have anybody tried this romversion?

KANG means nothing but its an Experimental Build (Nightly) .. If u have GB kernel try Epsylon3 CM7 Roms for Defy+ (GB kernel) ..
and regarding KANG if the build is named Addressing Defy or Jordan, then its for Defy.
and if its named addressing GB kernel or Defy+ then its for Defy+ !!
Thanks for the informations I know about epylons3 CM7.2 nightly builds but on his versions the camera doesn´t work 100%! It´s overhead on my defy.. so it doesn´t usable for me
...I´ve tried out the "KANG" version of CM7 and it doesn´t work on the defy+ kernel !
but the headline of kangs thread means that it was also for the defy+. Thats not true!
On my brothers Defy the ROM run very well and smooth!
..I hope i can flash this ROM very soon!
Is it possible to make a "extra" version for the defy+/defy with new kernel ??
Because i get crazy about the new kernel and the nighlty builds (epsylon3/quarx)
for defy+ works very good and fast but the camera is overhead.
I´ve tried to replace the camera.apk from another build, but it doesn´t help me to fix this problem.
i think it just mod the lockscreens,i prefer Ep3 's builds.

If it is given that it is for defy+..then i suppose u need to flash GB kernel along with the ROM [may be that ROM is having Froyo kernel]..try it.. that may work..and right now Eppy and Quarx are working on Defy CM 7.2 & CM9..once the boot loader is unlocked , i think defy+ will have a lot of scope..think they are facing some problem with GB kernel..

You can use Epsylon3 last nighty simply adding those patchs.
Ok! Thanks "elTorres" I´ll try the newest nightly and these patches and look how it work Thanks for all the fast help !
ok, i´ve tried it with the newest nightly (7.2) for defy+
and the two patches from [] AL [] (big thanks!)
-made stresstest, etc., testphotos! and wow it works perfecly!
Cyanogenmod is still a fast, beautiful rom !

[Q] How to know what kernel i have

I'd like to know how to check what kernel i have installed (GB or froyo kernel), independently from the ROM i have installed, is there any way?
may it help you.

So, if i didn't get it wrong... the regular defy only support the froyo kernel and the defy+ only the GB one??
or, i can flash a GB kernel on my defy (MB525)??

You can flash a GB kernel on Ur MB525 .. but GB kernel has some hardware constraints like in green lens MB525 camera doesn't work.. etc ..
So if ur's is a green lens MB525 don't flash GB kernel ..if not u can flash it..
as of now all stable ROMs like CM7 , Miui , CM9 Beta (Quarx builds) are froyo kernel based..

[Q] About Kernels and CM9

First of all, I'd like to thank all you guys for all great work here on XDA, thank you very much!!
I have a Motorola Defy (MB525) with Red Lens and although I've changed the ROM of my Defy many times, I'm still new and I have some questions:
The first ROM I've installed on my Defy, was CM7 (unofficial, ported from Quarx), then changed to MIUI, then came back to CM7 (official) and now, I'm using CM9 (24/Feb) from Epsylon3/Quarx (from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432100 ) and this build is for Froyo Kernel, and, in this same thread, I've read that GB Kernel is better for CM9 and my Red Lens Defy...
My question is: can I flash CM9 for GB (with GB Kernel) and later return to CM9 for Froyo (and Froyo Kernel), or MIUI, or CM7 if I wanted to??
If I flash CM9 for GB (with GB Kernel), can I go back to stock if I need to??
Well, sorry for this noob questions and sorry for my bad english
well, my personal opinion is, that GB is always better for defy with red lens... only reason for froyo is the missing green lense support in gb, i think ...
i also think, that the kernel for these cm9 roms are flashed with an fixed sbf ... so it doesn't matter, what you have as stock system ...
that is no pro-answer, just a few thinks, i've read and hopefully understood ...
the whole romchange of defy is not easy to understand cause of that locked bootloader things and so on ... i also got a crazy problem with my defy+ as you can read in my thread ...
hopefully, we will get the answers we need to get our systems running as good as we like ...

Does that mean that those of with green lenses won't be able to upgrade to gb kernel if we want our cameras to work? (i mean by the time there's a cm9 stable)
i flashed cm9 feb. 29 release in my green lens defy.. and have camera preview with autofocus on it.. btw i flashed the cm7 kernel.. and i think cm7 kernel is froyo kernel.. cm9 kernel is gingerbread kernel.. anyone can elp me? how to move apps from phone to sd card?
I've found this:
fritolays said:
I packed the two different kernels into clockwork flashable packages.
1. Flash either a nightly or restore a nandroid.
2. Flash either CM7_Kernel-signed.zip or CM9_Kernel-signed.zip; depending on what you've installed.
3. Reboot.
CM7_Kernel-signed.zip
CM9_Kernel-signed.zip

in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20148046&postcount=1624
that means that I can go to CM9 (with GB Kernel) and then, if I want/need to, go back to CM9 (with Froyo Kernel) or any ROM based on Froyo Kernel, right??

You're right. I did this and works. Just flash the kernel based on the corresponding ROM and you're good to go.

[Q] what's the differences between cm7_defy and defyplus

what's the differences between cm7 for defy and defyplus?
Can defyplus used the defy-cm7?
that not the same battery and the kernel is adapted for that
Defy builds uses froyo kernel whereas defy + builds uses gingerbread kernel. to install defy versions on defy +, you need to install bl6 group and flash, however battery may not charge tohundred percent. The defy + builds can be used by defy red lens and regular defy +. Green lens defy will have problems with camera if we flash defy + bulls, green bread mod may work on few roms.
I'm having defy red lens and using cm72 defy + builds with Walter 4.5.3-109 kernel which gives best battery life.

which sbf you used?
I flashed the DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-132 O2.en.DE with CM7 and cannt boot up with the Walter 4.5.3-109 kernel (and any other kernel ).
I can only used the 4.5.1-134_DFP-132 kernel .
sorry for my poor english!
If you have *redlens* defy you can flash Quarx CM72 builds with walter kernel. The 4.5.3-109 kernel gives good battery life which you can use with 0316 builds. FOr ealier releases this kernel will give bootloop (this issue Quarx fixed from 0316 onwards) so you flash 4.5.2.109-dht_22 kernel.
The build can get from http://quarx2k.ru/cm7-nightly-defy+/ you can install CM9 kernel for it boot. Later you can change the kernel for better battery life.
The walter kernels are attached down - which you can flash via CWM.

Thanks!
I flashed the chinese bl=6 2.2sbf
then I can use the 4.5.3-109-11 kernel with cm7.
By the way which build is better between Quarx and Epsylon3 's.
Iam using Quarx 's 0314 now,it's great work.
And I was told that Epsylon will release the cm7 RC1 this week end.
which one would you preferred???

Well, quarx epsylon and maniac have different private builds.all of them have same base with little differences. You can use any of them, they will finalize and merge to stable when it's released.I use quarx cm72 defy + builds.

Hya, I know I am a n00b, but we all have to start . I must be doing something stoopid, as I am stuck at Motorola boot logo.
I have a defy red lenses (confirmed both visual and with log analyzer).
I have installed CM9 kernel, and I can boot latest defy+ quarx rom (30-30)no problem, but once I install 4.5.3 kernel, I am stuck at the big red M.
Also, when I boot CM9 signed kernel, returns 2.6.32.9...isn't this Froyo? Shouldn't be Gingerbread? I must be doing something obviously wrong, but I cannot find anything in the forums....
Which one is it cm9 build or cm72 build? I guess cm9 binaries not updated, anyway Try installing dht22 kernel, cm9 is GB kennel only don't get confused by looking at 2.6...

Multiboot with Wiui

Hello,
I wanna try multibooting on my defy. I got Wiui GB stable installed and wanna try 4.1.1. Will it cause any issue or problem?
Just want to be 100% sure before taking any step. Thank you.
Just install according to your kernel
If you have gingerbread kernel, install Jb for defy+,
And if you have froyo kernel, install Jb for defy.
not sure for green lens
