he asked what app i used ( i said none of course) and when in reality i didn't hit "hide on PDA net" but he asked if i used MIFI.
( i got out of this by saying i put my sim into another phone and it must have done something odd because the phone was an OLD phone that was having issues)

Most employees of carriers don't really care about you tethering. Sometimes they will tell you to get the sale. Sometimes even if they tell you, the end user is not able to perform the task.
Really, we don't care. Do it if you want. We're not reporting you or notating on your account that you are tethering for free.
This is like the carry threads on CC/OC forums. Like children saying, I open carried today. This guy stared at me and a kid asked if I was a cop. TEHE.
But really, I don't work for ATT. I work for another carrier. Reps would rather earn your trust for you to keep coming back to them. There's a internal war going on with Store Sales Reps and Customer Care / Over the Phone Reps. We'd rather have you deal with us in the store.

You have no idea how many customers come in trying to hide the fact that they rooted / jailbroke / have installed tethering apps on their phones.
We really do not care. At all. It's your computer, you know the TOS, do what you want to do.
It only bothers me when they directly lie about it to me and I have to call them out on it....
Ahaha oh I get it now. Yah i posted this when I got home from a physics midterm so that was most likely why. And I actually do have a question every rep i have spoken to Gave me a different answer to this: what does teathering actually cover. Is phone to car Bluetooth teathering? One rep said yes another said no. Would plugging the Asus padphone into its dock (basicly just a bigger screen n battery) be teathering like on he atrix ?)
I even asked my friends mom who works in the corporate part she had almost no idea and said the obvious hotspot answer.

I guess we will see. If AT&T sells the setup, then I would have a hard time imagining us calling that tethering.
But most likely in our system it would be detected as tethering.
We'll see!
How would that be detected? Wouldn't the data be ending at the device? ( I very much dislike what companys have done to data plans) it is still a confusing topic.

one way it can be detected are through packet headers. when you're tethering, all your device is doing is acting as a router. it doesnt modify anything (although i'm sure there's an app for that).
Pdanet? Doesn't it have a hide function? I have heard of that. I do think that u.s carriers are going to start going overboard with this though.

So the other day I was told that ATT could see your tethering through the Wifi Tether app (one that isn't supposed to use standard tethering protocols) is this true?
You guys should shop around with T-Mobile if you are that concerned about tethering. I was offered a plan that was $5 cheaper than the one I'm on two days ago. The new plan would have been unlimited voice/text and 10GB/month data with unlimited tethering. It was offered by the phone CS rep. The price was $55/month. I didn't take it since I don't want to be on contract. He said the normal price of the plan was $65. All I was calling for was to ask when I originally signed up with T-Mobile, since it's been so long that I forgot.
Also, my current plan is 1000 minutes, unlimited text, and unlimited data with tethering for $60/month.
Just food for thought. T-Mobile reps, like any other carrier, could care less whether or not you tether.

If you haven't heard all ready Verizon is tracking down root users and limiting there data or fully suspending it so watch out. But we have to fight back against them by hiding Verizon from seeing that we are proudly rooted and some people have said the would sue Verizon. Please do whatever you can to fight against this.
Also motorola and htc are going to start doing the same.

Where have you heard this? This is the first I have heard of it and through multiple google searches it seems that all link to this thread or copies of it. Nothing from any reputable source. Also after speaking with a Verizon rep they thought it was funny and didn't hear about it either.
EDIT: I saw the post by P3droid I still don't buy it. This garbage has been circling the internet for over a year. Not true then, not true now. Also if you read the article HTC and other carriers are thinking about this as well and HTC is already including encrypted bootloaders so point fingers everywhere. Still though Verizon nor any other carrier are going to do anything. Think about it... They are offering the upgrade on Zoom tablets even if you are rooted... That post by P3Droid is simply fear mongering.

Is this some kind of April fools? First of all, we should be allowed to use our data allotment however we see fit, the tether plan is nothing more than a money grab. I can connect my computer, and whatever else, and if I run out of data, verizon gets more money that month, since I have to buy more. Preventing us from tethering for free is ridiculous. And frankly, ATT did it for the iphone, but I actually think that's because they have a pathetic network, and they had to find some way to lighten the load. Anyway, this better not be true. Or I'm starting my own wireless company, and it will be FOR the people. While still making plenty of money not having to nickel and dime anybody. That is all.

As a new root user, and a complete N00B. I first would like to say. Thank you! To all the dev teams out there. You guys have made my experience with my amazing Droid X a complete blast. I just love flashing the Liberty 1.5 ROM to all my fellow co-workers that are being strapped by Apple. I for one, being a tech, have heard a lot of backroom conversations. I know these big corporate entities are looking at this forum and asking why college kids can do these amazing things with their devices, but we as mature, hardworking, overpaid corporate big shots can not figure this **** out. It's absolutely hilarious to me. It's a classic Slippery Slope. They can't figure it out, they "Leak" it out source somehow. The underground dev teams take it and make it great, then these corporate beasts take it back all shinny and new, and then throw the developers into the fire. Screaming "Off with their Heads"! "They've stolen from us"! Last I checked we still live in a country, that is if you're reading this from the USA, that still stands for FREEDOM! SDICKER89 said it best from the DEV forum:
"Should I give in, and be unhappy with my phone as stock 2.2 froyo with tons of bloatware that ill never use and slows down my phone every day? Should i deal with the horribly coded motoblur that slows down my phone more than the bloatware? Maybe i should just go back to a standard style phone and use Boost mobile or something cheap and use use my droid x that I PAID FOR, off network as a multimedia device. That way, "the man" can't tell me what i can and can't do. What is everyone else thinking on this subject? "

Did I not just break it by rooting and ROMing? That's the way I understand it. Maybe I don't fully understand what's going on here.
When I signed up with my Android I signed up for $30 unlimited data and if they are changing the rules for whatever reason they are breaking the contract. In my opinion I should not pay an ETF for something they have caused... some will argue I rooted/tethered but unlimited is unlimited.
You fail to read the fine print just like credit cards. The carrier can change your plan as they like but must offer you options, ie. Grandfather you until your next upgrade or allow you to leave without a penalty. VZW has done nothing illegal, and like said before, if you rooted the phone you broke the agreement with VZW and have no legs to stand on in a court of law and they can do as they please with your data allotment.

Rooting/Jailbreaking is actually legal. Apple already tried to do this for the exact same reasons and failed in court.
This is not about the ability to root/modify. They could care less. What they are annoyed about is how people use root. they dont want their service to be stolen.
If verizon allowed the use of "free" tethering with apps such as wireless tether and barnacle, and bumped up the price of data a little (because data is data, whether you are tethering or on youtube) then not only would the community and myself be happy without the whole data throttling thing because of tethering, but the carrier/moto would also be ecstatic because they get a lot of positive PR from one of the most influential parts of their phone community.

And this is clearly unfair for those rooted users who don't abuse their power. I pay for an unlimited plan and yet 95% of the time my phone is connected to WiFi.
This is all hearsay until we have cases of people having their contracts cancelled or whatnot.
Also you have to realize the point of this whole thing. Its not if you root. Vzw is against you tethering without paying for it. Its a service they offer for money. Its not a free service, so don't expect to get it for free without vzw doing something about it. Just because your phone is capable of it, doesn't mean you get it for free!!!! That's like saying, "my phone is capable of phone calls... I should get them for free!!!"
No you shouldn't. You should pay for it just like everyone else. Just like you should pay to have the tethering service.

Well......just spent an hour and a half, got disconnected twice, and then got the "Customer Service Center is CLOSED" message after the second disconnect.......I was trying to get an update on when the third party app sources would be released per their official confirmation back on May 17th......no one seemed to know anything about it......they had already released it to the INFUSE and to a few other phones, with the rest of the android phones to get the update within the next few weeks (some people have confirmed that they have received the update)......no one with AT&T Customer Service had any idea what I was talking about.....I had to explain in excruciating detail, what was supposed to be happening......they even got me on the phone with Motorola, and they knew what I was talking about, and said they were told the same thing, that AT&T would be releasing the hold......so AT&T was "trying" to get a higher level of Customer Service, when I was disconnected the first time......SO......got nowhere fast, and can't call back till tomorrow......VERY frustrating......if anyone has heard any update to this, please respond to this TOO long of a message......sorry guys......
Customer service has no info on this, I know because I work for ATT customer care. I've looked and talked to our tech team and android team. We are not privy to that information.

your first mistake was thinking that AT&T CS knew the answer.
Why would they not have info on this? This was BIG news from AT&T, and you would think that, at LEAST, they would have the info that THERE IS an update, even if they don't know WHEN......even the reps at the AT&T store near me, when I bought the Atrix a couple of weeks ago, were told that the update was expected any day......and that several of the phones were already updated, and were being sold already like that......such as the INFUSE, Aria, etc......just trying to understand why, with such a big deal, they wouldn't know ANYTHING......any ideas? And again, sorry......just frustrated after being disconnected twice and not getting anywhere......
And I'm not bashing their customer service......normally I get very good service when I deal with them......just seems like this would have been addressed.....
CSR is generally good, except a few jerks. If you get those, just hang up and dial again.
Since we're on the topic of AT&T, I wanted to point out something for people with AT&T who aren't on unlimited data
AT&T billing and this is Important for those of you with 2GB or 200MB data plans
If you use data the day before your billing cycle ends, there is a likelyhood that the amount of data that is on that day will roll over to the next day. It has to do with the way the system updates. It's not exactly in real time or so they say.
Your billing info will show data from that day on the next billing cycle.
I've gone through this problem about 7 times before I did the Unlimited loop hole.
So, at the end of every month, you should check your bill to see if they charged you data for usage you a day before your billing cycle.
Example:
Data shows March 22 usage on a a belling cycle that is from February 22 to March 21

Im calling BS till Pictures are shown of the upgraded device. I spoke with both Motorola and Verizon yesterday for approximately an hour each, Supervisors in customer retention et cetra, they sure were not offering to send a box to my door to ship it to moto for a upgrade (I know, I asked) spoke to "Caroline" Verizon customer service ID 2047489 and her supervisor. Try giving them a call their as clueless as the deceptive Motorola staff.
i already have a box for a different issue. You think if I send it in they will fix it and throw the lte upgrade in for the heck of it?
How about going into settings and getting a pic of u holding up ur 4g upgraded xoom. Where it shows the build and version. The reason it's hard to believe is that so many of us have called and gotten no box to ship ours out. I have called and gone to every vzw store within 150 miles. None of them have had a xoom upgraded yet. As far as I'm concerned motor can send my 2 4g cards to my door! The damn bionic is crap! Why would I trust a cheap tech to put my cards in without screwing them up?

As soon as I figure out how to get a pic on here I will. I just called and said I was told I was getting a box to send it in. The person didn't have a clue what I was talking about and got a supervisor that did know, she apologized and sent me a box, it was that easy. She probably wasn't suppose to do it but all Verizon employees and Verizon contractors as well as fortune 500 customers have all received the upgrade. It does exist.

i find it interesting that verizon would offer to send you a box since, to the best of my knowledge, motorola is the one performing the upgrade?
not calling BS, just a little odd that vzw would be sending it.
I work for Verizon Wireless Corp here in Lansing Michigan as a retail sales rep. I had sent my xoom tablet in a couple of weeks ago during an Employee Only offering to test the process of upgrades to the Motorola Xoom. The whole process took about 4 days including the ordering of the box they send you. Was kinda hesitant due to the fact that I really customized alot of settings ... apps that arent avail any more..etc., So I sent it in without backing anything up (took a "Big" risk of losing my stuff), once I got it back my xoom had plastic protection on the screen , documentation of what was installed and a new build number " HLK42B ". Once I turned my device back on with fingers crossed.... all of my apps, movies, settings everything was how i left It. Was very satisfied with the care they took and notifing me along the way by email once recieved, completed , and sent from repair location. The 4G in my area is beyong what I expected. For those on the fence well worth sending it in.

What are your reasons for running on verizon? You can always use the 00001 prl, which will let you talk/text/3g on verizon. As long as you dont use it a whole lot (about 50% per month) you shouldnt get caught from sprint.

Prepare for a flame war for using cap lock. A simple search would of given ur answer... Yes and no. U can flash a rom but nothing will work except for calls i believe. Ur gonna have to edit the rom u want to flash to get data working.

Nah, there ain't going to be any flame war...the dude is obviously an idiot!! Chances are that they're really not really putting him on Verizon but on Page Plus BUT he's too busy being a hot head about things! He thinks we're mommas boys or whatever, OK....don't come crying 2 months from now when they bust down your trailer and haul you and your meth making girlfriend to jail for fraud because you thought you were some sort of hardcore internet gangsta that couldn't listen to what people are trying to tell you...hahaha
Dude......evil offered you some sound advice. U don't have to take it......u also don't need to be a jerkoff. I don't believe he was telling you not to do it.....he was using real life examples of people who got caught and what happened to them. U should be pushing the thanks button on each of his posts as well as this one.
Ok my bad I'm fast to act like a ass. Im sorry I do understand that you guys are looking out and that is great sorry once again if I offended anyone and I take it in consideration on the info given

Sorry to of opened my mouth and disrespected you guys. Ya I'm a hot head but at that note my wife is not a meth head. Man look, pick on me not my family she was killed last year by a drunk driver that got away so the topic of my wife is very touchy. Sorry for being a noon and a asshole. Thank you guys for all your help in my problems.

I don't get offended I'm just trying to warn u vzw likes to throw their weight around and hard and they have the money to do it they will show up to court with some lil dip**** Rep and then 3 attorneys a criminal, civil and idk what the other was probably a second civil cuz my boy got 2 yrs in jail for fraud and a 250,000$ fine for what vzw called wire fraud they basically conned a judge into buying that he was stealing service because he didn't buy a smartphone directly from them and was off contract even tho he was still paying them their rediculous rates, I can't stand vzw u pay through your nose, ass and eyes to be treated like a dog turd stuck on their shoe their customer service skills blow harder than a f5 tornado
We are legion, for we are many.
Thank you the more you tell me the more I'm ready to say never mind bad idea. I got 5 years in jail already couldn't see my kids going to the state cause Verizon is a pushy company.

I've done, bunch of people have done, and a bunch more will do it....
You actually bought a phone from verizon, you own both phones, chances of they getting you is 1 in one million.
People come out with the dogs not knowing exactly the rules of stealing/cloning/swapping.
If you swap esn/meid your phone become the donors phone bottom line that's what they will see.
if you wanna know how to do it, pm. I dont charge a penny, to whoever want to learn. this applys to
most phones.
If you search around you will see a tons of guides/how to on how to flash to cricket/metropcs/virgin and etc...
anyway people are using one's phone carrier on another.
Iphone or any gsm phone, they are exclusive for specific carriers. though people jailbreak or unlock to use
in another carrier.
they been doing this since mmmmm since mmmm?? well a very long time ...lol
I mean knowledge ahead, doing or not is totally up to you.
I can guarantee voice/text will work, now regarding data maybe, I've seem people with data and other not or struggling with 1x.
PS
everybody know that pulling the trigger can kill, however most people are not willing to do so. You decide your will.
Thanks for the helpful info, but i am going to flash my phone over to verizon anyway. I already bought the donor phone and paid for the month of service so there's no turning back now I'm having a few issues so so help would be excellent from the poster above. If you could shoot me a pm it would be much appreciated!

Only certain people are allowed to cancel, they have predetermined who that is. Its not a change in most people's contract as the terms read that they are allowed to limit, suspend or cancel service while roaming. Also if you don't actually use data roaming and haven't before then it wouldn't be a "materially adverse" change. This thread is stupid if you are allowed to cancel you will get a notice, all this thread is doing is creating useless calls for T-Mobile lengthing wait times all because your a baby and can't take responsibility for your crap like a grown up. I already delt with an idiot who thought he could get out of his contract because he read on the internet he could, he thought it was T-Mobiles problem he doesn't read a contract. Dude didn't even roam as he lived in a big city, hadn't used data roaming ever just a childish adult that can't take responsibility.

What does the notice say? I got an email from T-Mobile but didn't read it.
Google it. Data roaming changes and only certain markets are affected.

I think he did.
im sure for one that this is the general section, so he can post here if he wants to, and im pretty sure that he did not hold a gun to someones held and tell them they have to do this.
personally as a tmo customer i think that we deserve to know about anything that could help us with a vast number of problems, this being one for the vast majority.

Pull your head out of your ass, your mad because I said people should be grown ups and take responsibility. Most people will tell you T-Mobile was way better back in the day especially customer service, crap like this is why they are scripted now and why they outsource so much, because the outsourcers just read and do as they're told. These threads are stupid because customer care even retention has had the ability to waive an ETF taken away a long time ago. So the people that call in waste there time and CS's time because unless outlined for them already they can't waive it. If you want to talk **** go for it don't bother me, the internet gives you confidence you wouldn't otherwise say in person little man.
