So is there a limit on how much data can be used on the "unlimited" android plan? I did a google search and there was one article I found that said 1GB was the limit? is that true?.. I know Iphone has around 5GB "unlimited" data?
Anyone?
When the Dream (G1) came out they lifted the 1GB cap and now I believe there's a 5GB soft cap.
So I just did a t mobile chat
So I just did a t mobile chat and this is what i got;
rob: what is the "unlimited" data cap per month?
_Marion M: To provide a good experience for the majority of our customers and minimize capacity issues and degradation in network performance, we may take measures including temporarily reducing data throughput for a subset of customers who use a disproportionate amount of bandwidth; if your total usage exceeds 10GB (amount is subject to change; please periodically check T-Mobile.com for updates) during a billing cycle, we may reduce your data speed for the remainder of that billing cycle.
Like the response "rshemeld" got from his chat with Tmobile there is no cap to our Unlimited data plans like other providers may have.
We "Throttle Down" data transfer speeds after 10GB is exceeded during a bill cycle but there is still no overage charges (with all newer features). To this day I have talked to ONE person that has reached the 10GB throttling point during a bill cycle. On 3G network they were experiencing EDGE like speeds to give you an example of how much it is/can be throttled down.

I just moved over from Verizon where i was a customer for many years. I fell in love with TMOUS HTC HD2 Leo at first sight. I asked the tmobile rep if "unlimited" really meant unlimited and she said yes, i asked her if there was any asterisk subtext or any LIMITS/restriction to this plan - still she replied 'no', now I get a message from tmobile saying that I have gone over 10gb data and that they would be throttling my plan down to 50kbs for the remainder of this billing cycle!
I am considering returning the device and canceling due to being misled. I made the sales rep say 3 times "unlimited and without restriction" yet now I slow crawl the web!
Sales and z marketing have to stop using catch words that simply aren't true like "free", "unlimited" and "satisfaction guaranteed"!

It is unlimited. You didn't get to 10gb and then all of a sudden get shut off. You got restricted from full access, however you are still able to use 3g networks without any limit.
Sorry, but if you want to beat these reps, you have to use correct vocabulary. Why would they tell you data usage can be restricted if you don't ask while they're trying to sell you a phone and slam you into a contract? That's just bad business.
Also, 10gb is A LOT. Especially for simple web-browsing and app downloading. If you want to download a HUGE file, wait until you get wifi. It's faster anyways.
Oh, you're not going to be able to cancel without a heavy fee just because you claim to have been "mislead." I agree with you, the rep SHOULD have told you, but then they wouldn't have gotten a commission.
Im in Georgia, i have gone over 10gb and they have not said or charged me anything, i didnt see a change in speed anyways, so i would say UNLIMITED SPEED/DATA.

That's what you would say. However, it DOES get cut down, whether you say it does or doesn't. So, you are wrong.
Oh but I can cancel as I am brand newwith tmous. I have 14 days under new contact and can cancel 100% without any penalty.
while I didn't specifically mention 10gb as a number, I did ask her if d/l massive amounts of data are there ANY restrictions or penalties, to which shereplied, "no".
An equal analogy would be to rent a hotel room that comes with an included shower that suddenly reduces from spray to a drip 10 minutes into the shower. With soap in your eyes and hair, you'd be none too happy as well, but am I going to check out??
I gave her every opportunity to "fess up" with a disclaimer, I even asked her about restrictions or disclaimers but got no warnings. As this is a brand new device on a brand new network (to me anyway), I wanted to put it to the test - streaming music, videos, d/l apps etc. This will not be my typical monthly usage.
Why not call this the 10gb data plan rather than unlimited?
you must work in Sales or you would agree that todays marketing lingo is intentionally misleading - especially since you mentioned her commission.
Will I check out? Probably not, but it'll be probably 3 weeks or so until the shower works right again. I guess I just needed to rant and advise others what CAN happen...
I spend all day every day on my phone at work (lots and lots of downtime) and I've never come anywhere near 10GB. Tethering isnt technically legal, so if you're doing that, you have nothing to complain about since you're breaking the rules anyway.

Good, I would get out of a contract. They're no good.
10gb data plan would be misinterpreted by the common public. People would think they would ONLY get 10gb to use a month, and you'd be surprised how many people think 10gb is very little. Talking data usage on a cellphone, that's PLENTY with PLENTY to spare. I don't use HALF of that a month with constant internet usage. Also, many people would go run off to another cellphone company that says unlimited but cuts down download speed after 500mb of data usage. Its all in marketing. Besides, doesn't "unlimited data" plan sound better than "data plan where you use 10gb and then it gets cut down to half of your regular download speed but you'll still have access to data usage" plan?
Maybe the rep didn't know, maybe they were trying to make their commission. It is in the fine print somewhere, though.
Using tethering I've been getting to 10GB every month for about the last 4 or 5. They just lower your download speed to 50kb/s, although it still tells you you're at 3G speeds. Other than that though there is no "cap" where they cut your data plan altogether.
No, I was not tethered. I did however d/l lots of movie torrents via wmtorrent. Next time will use wifi when I can but I dont have as pc or wifi-I piggyback on unsecured, public nets.

Didn't know they throttle you at 10 gb but its good to know that it really is unlimited data.
I am friendishly warning you to NOT USE IT. It will void your contract and they will drop you. If you didnt know this before hand, you may want to stop. I love wifi tether but sadly it will end up getting me droped =/ Its in the sprint contract terms and what not
Thanks, were you dropped?
Nah. Just as a noob would, im new to all this root stuff, so i looked up if its illegal or not and it is with some companys. Especially sprint.. they can tell if your using wifi tether without paying their $30 a month for wifi. They'l drop you first off lol

It's NOT illegal. Yes, it voids your contract, but as most people will tell you, you have unlimited data, they can't tell you how to use it.
And FYI, sprint can NOT tell if you are using wifi tether or not. To them, it just looks like regular data being used on the phone.

Hmm ok. misread some info.. But you have to think.. they can notice.. When you go from suttle data usage to some rapid burning usage its sort of obvious
Yes that is correct. If your a constant 1gb user every month for like a year then jump to 10gb's they'll question that. Just don't go throwing up red flags and you'll be fine. There's been threads on here with ppl being dropped only cause in their words 'I'm gonna stick it to sprint' and they go and use 20+ gb's. And you wonder why sprint sends out the we're letting you go letter

As long as you don't abuse the tethering and rack up 10s of GBs of data consistently, Sprint could care less right now about whether or not people who choose to stick with them are tethering for free, as Sprint continues to lose customers.
Sprint is more concerned right now with how much data is going over the air than how people are sending it, because too much data over the air slows service to everyone.
There have been more people who have had their contracts cancelled who were paying the $30 dollars per month, but racking up enormous amounts of data (more than 10GB consistently) than people who do not pay the $30 dollars, but use tether more sparingly. In fact, there are many users right here on this site who have tethered for a long time, who Sprint has never done or said anything to.
I was about to say,i've been using my tether for over 6 months and i've never been repremanded for it,from sprint.
tethering is to risky imo.. sprint is unpredictable
Speeding is illegal too, doesn't mean I won't do it on the way home. I figure Sprint told me, that my phone would connect to their advanced 4G network, as they would eventually cover most areas with it and yet now my phone will never be usable on their 4G if they get disgruntled about my tether then they let me go to VZW

If you read the terms and conditions, racking up enormous amounts of data (whether you are paying for tethering or not), as well as tethering for free are both violations of your contract. However, Sprint will cancel your service quicker for the excess data usage (even if you are paying the $30 per month), than they will over free tethering, because too much over the air usage slows down service to everyone, which is one of the biggest complaints about Sprint (Service being too slow).
Well they probably would drop you if you had like 50gigs+ every month and the only way you could do that is downloading major porn or like downloading world of warcraft 3 or 4 times lol
I've been tethering since we had what seemed like a 20 step rooting sequence using adb commands. In other words ancient history in terms of the Evo. They've never given any indication of caring, but I only tether when I need to. I've downloaded torrent sized files, but never very often. I probably use more data flashing roms from my dropbox than I ever have by tethering.
I wonder if the can supposedly glean this info from CIQ. They do take user stats and most likely apps stats.
I use about 12 gigs monthly since 06. No hitch
I personally don't use the tethering all that much. I find that it decreases my battery life by like 726237x. And I don't know about you guys, but I don't bring my phone charger with me everywhere. So.

Doesn't matter. I can't even use Wifi tethering.
My 3G speed is honestly making me think about switching to VZW, even though I wont get unlimited data. I can literally only pull 24 kB/s down (yes, 193 kbps - TERRIBLE) during the day. At night (1am+) I can pull about 1000 kbps.
I used to be able to get way better speeds, but over the last month or two it has literally come to a crawl. I only use Wifi on my evo now, i can barely use the market on 3g. I attribute this to the recent S2 and iPhone 4s. It's probably also related to my area, Southern Cali. Very populated and probably too much traffic (no 4g either... stupid.)
try boosting your 3g. theres a thread somewhere to do it.. it like calibrates your 3g to the best it can do
Tried searching around, no such luck for this thread. All I've come across is a some other users getting speeds just as bad as me.
Can't believe I'm paying the $10 dollar data fee per month, I could probably get a better connection from dialup.

Fwiw, i was throttled 3 weeks into my billing period. My usage was 1.7 gigabytes (remember, over the first3 weeks of the billing cycle) at that point.
My normal down speeds range 1.5-4mbps. Now, I am throttled down to 150kbps.
Like the last poster, lots of apps are unusable and essentially has left me without data for most uses besides basic weboage viewing. This has happened the last 3 months and I have reduced my usage in fear of this the last 2. I think its BS that Im being throttled for 1.7 gigabytes of use 3/4s of the way through my billing period and I expect to just keep getting throttled every month til I disconnect att.

Before you go calling in the calvalry, I recommend reading your terms of service.. Not the ones that GayT&T gave you when you signed up, but the ones that currently apply. They always put a clause in there stating they can change the rules and whatnot you agree on, so get the latest. THEN.. have a law-savvy individual give it a once-over. These companies change their terms in order to "improve services" for everyone. This means that they may want to throttle your bandwidth in order to provide more to others while they enhance their network coverage. Basically, their network is flooded and overwhelmed with traffic and they cant keep up.. However, in my opinion, they have way more money than us and can make these upgrades as needed. Stating they cannot is basically saying "we want more money and dont care till we lose customers". I have ran into this rut a few times with cellular providers, and I honestly see no way to easily deal with it besides getting service with no contract. Providers dislike this, but it opens new means to reasonable service over time as masses change service. And as far as a lawsuit, if you find the nugget of gold to get you to win, screw a class-action lawsuit. Do it yourself with a lawyer, because it's a huge gamble either way, but the payoff will be significantly more doing it solo... Or, you can go with a class-action suit and get 10 bucks out of it. At least your point would get across..
I was also in the to 5% the last two months and am throttled. There is a thread about this in every att phone forum on xda. Total bull**** is what it is.

Im not a huge facebook fan, and I only update apps etc, when im on a wifi. so. but there are alot of people out there that update there freakbook stats every time they take a dump.

As an aside, if you're on the 200 MB plan you can go online and change your data plan for the billing period when you go over and backdate it to the beginning of the month. then change it after the billing cycle is up.

I don't see a class-action suit being successful here. The contract is for unlimited data, not for unlimited data at maximum speed. If AT&T can show that a small percentage of users are using an extraordinarily high percentage of overall bandwidth, throttling may be seen as a legitimate answer to improve overall network performance.
Although, a case like this would never make it to trial. AT&T would settle and anybody who was throttled will likely get a couple dollars. AT&T would continue to throttle.

Sprint has the WORST coverage of all of the carriers (I tried them ALL last year), at the very least in my area they are the worst. Also, dont buy into there lies about not throttling, SPRINT THROTTLES there is no doubt about that. Also Sprint advertises a good price, but its also a lie, they charge an extra $10 that they don't mention just because. There unlimited plan costs $100+ (regardless of what they advertise, when you get the bill you will see I assure you, I have been there) and on Att I pay slightly less than $100 for much better service. I am not always happy with Att, in fact most of the time I am unhappy with them, but I'm definitely not going to take a step back to Sprint, a more expensive service with less coverage. At least when Att lies they use some inventive techniques like "The Atrix is capable of HSPA", thats not a lie, but it seams unethical. When Sprint lies they just flat out lie. They lie about their prices. They lie about throttling. The CEO goes on thier commercials and straight up lies to the whole country saying they don't throttle, then tells Forbes the truth. Hopefully you hear my warning and avoid Sprint like the plague, but if you choose to do business with them you will see for yourself soon enough.

I agree they are only throttling the unlimited users. I had that problem till I switched plans (actually they forced the switch, but that is another long thread in itself). Once I got to a metered plan, they stopped throttling, and were more than happy to charge for data overages.
ATT still thinks that customer service is to give you as little as possible based on their outdated infastructure instead of updating\modernizing and providing the customer what they want. They still can't figure whether to update their existing equipment for 3g, or go with LTE, so they are trying to do both. Two years now they been touting 3g and still have about the slowest data speeds, nowhere near what the 3g is supposed to be.
If we as individuals had the power to sue them, they would be more inclined to attempt to meet customer demands and stop the false advertising. Thank congress for taking away the right to sue.
So they offer a 2GB plan and a 4GB plan, and then they turn around and try and claim that someone using less than 2GB is among the top 5%!?
I call BS on that and that could be the only hope for a class action suit; make at&t prove the data usage they claim. With netflix and youtube and all sorts of streaming services there is no way that 1.7GB puts you in the top 5%.
By the way, I'm at 1.8GB about halfway through my billing period on normal usage for me and I have never been throttled yet.

I'm assuming it's still your home market and I'm guessing that has something to do with the FCC and how they are getting away with it. There's a lot of rules that pertain to your market. I read a little about it when trying to port two lines over that were from different markets. Couldn't happen, was only able to keep one of the numbers.
I had the same problem a few months back.
Speculation from a lower division rep is that they're trying to push everyone who has the unlimited data to tier plans because as far as I know, a lot of users with unlimited who have gotten the top 5% warning in the past are getting capped around 2GB
I spoke with an upper division rep and this is what they said, and this is not word for word:
If you get flagged once as a top 5% user, you will stay flagged indefinitely. This means that whenever you reach the top 5% (I asked, not specified as to how that works considering every one has a different billing cycle and top 5% of which users, unlimited or every one, or every one that is flagged), you will get reduced speeds.
For those with unlimited who have never been flagged and reach past 2GB will not be flagged unless they deem you a serious data user.
How they define top 5% is not specific, but is based on their "research".
Now you're thinking if less and less people want to get capped, they'll use less data, and therefore the top data usage number will change, that sounds exactly like what they're trying to do. I asked about that, but she said she has no idea about how they actually do the capping except once you're flagged, you're flagged, especially since you're getting capped around 2GB.
Just letting you guys know the facts I got from the CSR and their supervisor.
For the first time Ive been throttled at the 2gb mark. My data speeds at this time are between no data and 100 kbps. AT&T keeps telling me that is incorrect and that I should just wait the remaining week until my data cap resets. They were extremely kind enough to offer me a $30 for 3gb data plan.
Best analogy I can think of, several years after owning my car, Toyota calls me up one day and says: Hey jerk0ff, you now have two options:
1) drive as fast as you want as far as you want for 2 miles, after which you can only drive up to 10 mph every 30 days
2) drive as fast as you want for 3 miles then we charge you for every mile after that.
What a bunch of crooks. They keep telling me I shouldn't be experiencing data speeds being affected in any way other than video. Well, accessing google.com isnt video but it takes about a minute to load.
Frankly if you pay $30 and get throttled at 2 and they offer a $30 plan for 3 gigs you shouldn't be throttled until at least 3 gigs, probably not the news you want but hey you wouldn't be paying more over and you get just as much bang for your buck

using throttling as a means to get people off unlimited plans isnt more bang for your buck. its just being dishonest. Google "ATT Data Throttling" and youll get storied of people at 1.6gb being throttled.

If you have one of their grandfathered unlimited plans, and they throttle you at 2GB, you should really consider getting a lawyer. What they are doing is in no way considered fair use.
Say there was a big prestigious race going on between 100 cars. These cars would be going around the track for 100 laps. Now imagine that at the end of each lap, the top five cars each had one of their tires flattened. If this kept up for the entire race, eventually every single car would have all of their tires flattened, and no one would enjoy the race.
This is what it's like to have throttled data on an "unlimited data" plan where they kick off the top users for abuse of the unlimited plan.
I know, mind = blown, right?
I spoke to someone this morning and went over the analogies which worked out since he had just bought a car yesterday.
He told me that its an obvious money push. and to just wait. How ****ty is at&t that even their own CSR know its a BS move? He also told me he doesnt understand the top 5% thing either.
pretty ****ty.

This is why I dumped AT&T. I'm not okay with them being increasingly aggressive to force customers off their unlimited plans just because their network can't keep up with demand.

Excellent analogy, if only I can tell the FIA something like this about their DRS and they would listen.
That's why I moved off of AT&T and onto Sprint. Unlimited data with no caps. Though Sprint's speeds are not the best against the other carriers, at least it is truly unlimited. Where I live, I get over 1 Mbps on 3G, which is good enough to stream YouTube videos in HQ on my phone (which is the most demanding data app I use anyways). Hopefully with Sprint's Network Vision coming to fruition in the next few years, their speeds should increase, but I'm hoping they don't end unlimited data because it is really their selling point and a way to steal customers from other carriers.
The number of articles about their dbaggery is getting quite large. Apparently even Verizon doesn't do a full month throttle. Just during times of congestion specifically

Your lucky T-mobile cap you to 56K and they tell you is to edge,go do a speed test if you can, because it will take for ever,9 out of 10 pages would not load.
I am sure than if a judge see 2 phones one cap and another working normal it would not have any problem ruling that what they are doing is sabotaging or killing your line, nothing works but text and voice.
Leave them AT&T is the worst of all the companies, because bad practices, monopoly and screwing people up is what they have done for more than 100 years,so you know old habits die hard.
They charge you like $80 or more for 3GB when other companies offer you 5 for less,i don't like T-mobile policies either, but is the closes you will find that is great and cap you at 5GB for less money.
I went to sprint, but the speed are horrible,i actually yesterday for the first time tested wimax, and it was incredible compare to how slow is almost always,i got 7,000kb on speed test on wimax which is great for anything.

This is something i have been saying, they throttle unlimited plans, but don't throttle limited ones, because they make money on those people who go over the limit, the more you use the more they make, and like i say you can use 10GB and be the greatest impact to the network and they will not care because you are paying them a ton of cash extra.
T-Mobile is now throttling those who use excessive amounts of data on the "unlimited"
http://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/342wr7/tmobile_is_now_throttling_unlimited_data/
This is probably what everyone gets because of those hacking their wifi tether and thinking it's okay to use their cell phone as their home ISP. :good:.
Apparently they've always reserved the right to do this in their TOS, but are just recently starting to enforce it due to heavy abuse.
Update:
T-Mobile CEO John Legere has made comments on the situation
http://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/345oxe/legere_addresses_unlimited_data_prioritization/
Unless you have unlimited high speed data. But ur paying for it out the butt
BAD ASS NOTE 4
Apparently this is affecting everyone, even on the "truly unlimited plans". One person reported a phone rep trying to sell him a 21GB data plan.
People always abuse there data I get your paying for unlimited but nothing in this world is what it seems. I've heard of people using even 500GB of data almost even a terrabite dude. Like WHOA! Who uses that much data? Guess people who don't want to pay for WIFI. It does affect all of us. All that traffic by one individual now imagine thousands. I'm glad they are cracking down on this.

And I'll be the first to admit I have bypassed the tether allowance, but not for use as my main ISP. I've done it to send a few work emails and what not when I'm away from the office. I don't think I've ever gone past 50GB.

Problem is the same as Verizon. They punish those who are just using the unlimited service on their phone by using it as a phone as well.
The whole punish everyone thing seems to be popular anymore.

I've never passed 20 gb on my plan on the 2 years that I have tmobile. Even when I was tethering when I didn't have WiFi. Be a nice civilian and let us eat! Lol sometimes my speeds are not even 1MG and people with 60mbps I'm sure are the ones that do it the most. Lol..I'm just saying people.

i get why they are doing it but they also mentioned the top 3% of heavy data users. Last time i checked i used 31gigs this month and I have not been throttled yet. Ive seen as far as 60 gigs. I admit, i do download stuff time to time but i never watch tv. I stream all my music while at the gym, i stream netflix/other media apps to my chromecast when at home so yeah, i do use a lot of data. What i dont do is mess with my tethering. I have wifi at home. If i were to be throttled, i would pitch a fit as i would think this isnt fair to discipline a user for using a lot of data when they pay for unlimited.

Dude you pay for unlimited of course your going to use what you pay for lol. I also pay for unlimited(extra $20 a month) and if my speeds where actually good I'll probably be at 25 to 30 GB of data lol but I have WiFi at home.

I watch maybe 40 hours a month of Netflix at work. Take a guess what that adds up too. I don't have a WiFi network off an ISP at work.

Um, I call BS on this reddit post.
This has been happening since last year when they announced it.
The throttle "improper" usage. I think it's a good thinG because too many people abuse it.

Haven't seen a problem.
I did 50GB last month. Currently at 20gb or so. We have 3 lines unlimited Data on Family Plan.
I'm unlimited and rarely use 10 gigs. Just pay for the moments when a WiFi isn't around. I've tethered maybe 500mbs a month, don't see a problem with that. Those using huge amounts for their home should be throttled.

They better not be throttling my internet I pay for the truly unlimited plan $80 a month per phone I will call lawyer and sue if they are I don't care how much data i use that's why I'm paying $80 a month for Internet
as long as it doesn't affect the *unlimited lte plans* they were offering back in december. i'm good.

I don't think they're throttling people who are using a ton via legitimate means.
The note did say they will throttle those who are using massive amounts of data via means that are in violation of the terms and conditions of use.
People using hacks to get around tethering limits are one of them.

Nor do I but they might be, at&t did but then again at&t are a bunch of worthless ass hats
Did 132gb last month legit + illegit. No problems there. I did see the hotspot screen a few times but that was it. Don't intend to keep it this much though
Tmobile signal in my area took a dump, called and complained mainly because my signal at work disapeared completely and HSPA+ is non existant around work, only LTE and edge, but LTE signal sucks for going into buildings.
Called Tmobile and they tried to blame my data usage for it....lol.
Was their "advanced repair" and they seem to have 0 idea how it works...*sigh*
