So is there a limit on how much data can be used on the "unlimited" android plan? I did a google search and there was one article I found that said 1GB was the limit? is that true?.. I know Iphone has around 5GB "unlimited" data?

To this day I have talked to ONE person that has reached the 10GB throttling point during a bill cycle. On 3G network they were experiencing EDGE like speeds to give you an example of how much it is/can be throttled down.

I just moved over from Verizon where i was a customer for many years. I fell in love with TMOUS HTC HD2 Leo at first sight. I asked the tmobile rep if "unlimited" really meant unlimited and she said yes, i asked her if there was any asterisk subtext or any LIMITS/restriction to this plan - still she replied 'no', now I get a message from tmobile saying that I have gone over 10gb data and that they would be throttling my plan down to 50kbs for the remainder of this billing cycle!
I am considering returning the device and canceling due to being misled. I made the sales rep say 3 times "unlimited and without restriction" yet now I slow crawl the web!
Sales and z marketing have to stop using catch words that simply aren't true like "free", "unlimited" and "satisfaction guaranteed"!

It is unlimited. You didn't get to 10gb and then all of a sudden get shut off. You got restricted from full access, however you are still able to use 3g networks without any limit.
Sorry, but if you want to beat these reps, you have to use correct vocabulary. Why would they tell you data usage can be restricted if you don't ask while they're trying to sell you a phone and slam you into a contract? That's just bad business.
Also, 10gb is A LOT. Especially for simple web-browsing and app downloading. If you want to download a HUGE file, wait until you get wifi. It's faster anyways.
Oh, you're not going to be able to cancel without a heavy fee just because you claim to have been "mislead." I agree with you, the rep SHOULD have told you, but then they wouldn't have gotten a commission.
Im in Georgia, i have gone over 10gb and they have not said or charged me anything, i didnt see a change in speed anyways, so i would say UNLIMITED SPEED/DATA.

That's what you would say. However, it DOES get cut down, whether you say it does or doesn't. So, you are wrong.
Oh but I can cancel as I am brand newwith tmous. I have 14 days under new contact and can cancel 100% without any penalty.
while I didn't specifically mention 10gb as a number, I did ask her if d/l massive amounts of data are there ANY restrictions or penalties, to which shereplied, "no".
An equal analogy would be to rent a hotel room that comes with an included shower that suddenly reduces from spray to a drip 10 minutes into the shower. With soap in your eyes and hair, you'd be none too happy as well, but am I going to check out??
I gave her every opportunity to "fess up" with a disclaimer, I even asked her about restrictions or disclaimers but got no warnings. As this is a brand new device on a brand new network (to me anyway), I wanted to put it to the test - streaming music, videos, d/l apps etc. This will not be my typical monthly usage.

I spend all day every day on my phone at work (lots and lots of downtime) and I've never come anywhere near 10GB. Tethering isnt technically legal, so if you're doing that, you have nothing to complain about since you're breaking the rules anyway.

Good, I would get out of a contract. They're no good.
10gb data plan would be misinterpreted by the common public. People would think they would ONLY get 10gb to use a month, and you'd be surprised how many people think 10gb is very little. Talking data usage on a cellphone, that's PLENTY with PLENTY to spare. I don't use HALF of that a month with constant internet usage. Also, many people would go run off to another cellphone company that says unlimited but cuts down download speed after 500mb of data usage. Its all in marketing. Besides, doesn't "unlimited data" plan sound better than "data plan where you use 10gb and then it gets cut down to half of your regular download speed but you'll still have access to data usage" plan?
Maybe the rep didn't know, maybe they were trying to make their commission. It is in the fine print somewhere, though.
Using tethering I've been getting to 10GB every month for about the last 4 or 5. They just lower your download speed to 50kb/s, although it still tells you you're at 3G speeds. Other than that though there is no "cap" where they cut your data plan altogether.
No, I was not tethered. I did however d/l lots of movie torrents via wmtorrent. Next time will use wifi when I can but I dont have as pc or wifi-I piggyback on unsecured, public nets.

I never tether, that's probably why I never get close to cap. Always too slow for me.

That's the.avi, if it was torrent's he was downloading, .torrent files are only a few kb each!
Didn't know they throttle you at 10 gb but its good to know that it really is unlimited data.

Your data is still unlimited, you'll just be throttled to a slower speed once you exceed 5gb. So likely no different to the unlimited data you had before 3g was in existence.
I still think TMO's tiering/caping is the most reasonable in the industry. At least they aren't flat out cutting you off or hitting you up to pay for another 2gb bucket like other carriers. Though maybe an option to pay up to lift the cap would be a nice option for heavy users, but that might go down the slippery slope of them going that route and being like ATT rather than the throttling they are doing now
What would actually be nice is if they didnt just flat out throttle you at 5gb but throttle you with bursting ability. that way loading the quick email or light web page will still be snappy, but if you attempt any streaming or large downloads then you get throttled down.
What im curious about that hasn't been covered much is exactly what speed do you get throttled down to? do you still get 3g coverage, just throttled. or does the throttling turn off your ability yo use the 3g signals, leaving you stuck with edge coverage?
I may just have to test it out this billing cycle, and do some very large downloads the last couple days of my billing cycle and try to hit 5gb a couple days before my cycle resets and see just how bad it gets.

Yeah i know it sucks as far as being stuck in a contract thinking you were getting one thing and getting something else
But as far as i see legally they are still holding up their end of the contract, you are still completely unlimited in your net access. They never advertised a set kbps or mbps of service they would provide. no internet provider does, unless youre talking about a leased business class line. All your home based broadband connections are advertised as "up to" whatever speed

I get it, in order to sign contracts with multi~billion dollar corporations, you must first hire a multi~billion dollar attorney to translate the fine print.

Either way, you can't argue that you aren't getting unlimited data because you in fact are. They aren't cutting off your data once you hit 5GB or charging you more money when you go over 5GB. How is this a breach of contract?

Not a huge porn fan, but I do download a ****e ton of stuff from xda trying out all of the awesome cabs, and I do dig the youtube vidz of all things science/engineering/technology.
As far as arguing that my "unlimited" data plan is now "limited"to 5GB per month and how that is somehow not a breach of contract, well I am going to have to disagree with you.
The speed at which I agreed to pay for i.e. 3G, is slowed to less than DSL when I reach the recently altered terms set by Tmo concerning usage in a billing cycle.
If they are going to throttle my usage, they can also deduct that lost speed from my monthly bill.
In a nutshell, I am no longer getting what I signed up for 7 months ago but per my contract I am still expected to pay the same amount.
Or fork over mad cheddar to bail from the contract...don't know about you but it was $lightly terrifying for me $igning onto a premium package and a $et up like this for 2 more years.
Business expense, but still My Wife would be peeved to know it cost me $300 to pay another $300 for the ETF.
Money isn't my bestest friend...but dangit, Transformers looked SO good!!
My guess is that Tmo failed to prepare their network properly to meet the needs of the Fvckton of new clients that will rush into the HD7, and this was a hail Mary move. The timing seems about right in line with the upcoming release of the latest wondertoy.
I mean heck, what can anyone do? Complain? Whoopee, plenty of other tmo/xda members will pipe up and put them in their place.

All I do is use the internet a lot throughout the day looking at news and sports sites and my bill says I use 5GB a week. I don't download anything. Why buy a G2 if you just want to make phone calls?

I recieved a text 3 days ago.
I browse the net, and post regularly on quite a few forums. The only thing I can think of that kills it is downloading the themes etc. from forums directly to the phone.
I checked my account and it reads 0 due to that pesky unlimited data plan, and tmo has no way of compiling my total usage into a nice round #. All they see on their system is my entire usage broken down into individual "visits" to the network. Yeah, I almost insisted that she break out the calcuator and get to addin'!
Like I said, they seem a bit out of their element having just launched this new system.
Not one rep could offer anything more than an apology for not having more info when I went through my list of straight forward, and comprehensive inquiries.
What bothers me, among other things is the lack of transparency on their part in the form of the inability to answer simple questions. How can I be sure that they are capping at 5gb, or find out what speed have I been lowered to?
For all I know they are making up the rules as we're plowing down this dark gravel road to unknown parts.
A free speedtest could offer better data than the company I am paying good money to, and that is pretty jacked up.
To answer your question, I have no idea how I hit 5gb 1 week shy of my billing cycle ending.
And with no way to keep tabs, it looks like my Leo will be collecting a bit more dust in the future...I'd hate to blow the cap 2 weeks in.
Youtube vids now take 4 min. to load a 56 sec. clip.

i guarantee that the contract you signed in no way states what speed of service they will provide. that would be impossible to tmobile to hold upto, what about all the people paying the same price for their data service as you, but they are stuck in areas still only served by edge or god forbid gprs service?
Yes these service areas still exist, i personally experienced them on a road trip over the summer. 1 bar of gprs service in a cabin in north mississippi is real fun. i guess by your logic tmobile owes me a billing credit because i couldn't get 3g service while on the road for a week

If I left an area where service was solid, that would be one thing.
I am in K.C. where the service rivals Sprint's due to their "campus" being located here.
3 1/2 bars since day 1, another "issue" I have...
No movies (not til I pony up for coreplayer), and as far as music, the speaker sux bawls on the Leo and earbuds irritate me.
Just regular usage rivaling that of my average daily p.c. surfing was before I got my htc hd2 set up.

Anyways, after that lasts dumb post. I agree with the others up top, with the data cap instated, you are still getting data, just at a slower rate. No where in your contract does it state that what speeds you will recieve using mobile data, only that your access to mobile data is unlimited.
Well... I pulled the trigger canceling my family account with FIVE phones, 3 evos and 2 epics. It took me a bloody four hours to restock the thunderbolts with apps but it looks well worth the trouble. Man I really hate leaving sprint after a decade but their bloody network is falling apart. My home is still not on their coverage map for ANYTHING.. we had to roam just to talk and data was useless. The thunderbolt appears a bit brighter than the evo and perhaps a tiny bit snappier... I am able to use my 8x8 voip app on verizon 3g that never worked on sprint...nice benefit. Five phone family plan it looks like will cost $35-$55 MORE each month than Sprint..however.. with Sprint I was paying for service I did not have..not just the 4g but basic voice! The evo was great when visiting Atlanta or Vegas but was still hampered by Sprint's network everywhere in between. Sense is updated a bit on the thunderbolt.. that is cool... and I must have been the only guy using the stock carbon fiber background because it is missing...
Pass on any Thunderbolt specific questions... I am far more loyal to HTC/android than to a carrier.

I returned my gtab yesterday I loved everything about sprint for the almost 30 days I had it but the dial up speeds are a deal breaker I am on tmo now and enjoying real 4g speeds it seems sprint is just ignoring network issues and obviously its making customers jump the ship... very sad

excellent question... I used to travel quite a bit and it really was not an issue... we have been in our home 15 years... BEFORE verizon purchased alltel our sprint phones would roam on the alltel tower behind my home and all was made for love... in fact.. it was blazing fast, voice was fine, etc. starting about twelve months ago data started crawling at 5k if at all... it was like 1990! My investigation apart from sprint's lame excuses led me to find that the alltel roaming agreements with sprint were no longer honored by Verizon as they had been in the past... in short, verizon would allow voice and email only as bandwidth is throttled so much that little else can be obtained.. then a few months after data dropped out voice started flaking out... remember.. ALL this is on roam as there is ZERO sprint coverage.. has always been zero sprint coverage at my home... so I guess it was Verizon's purchase of Alltel that killed Sprint for me.. I hope this answers your question... it has be a long and tortuous year as information from Sprint was not actionable.. they even sent me a free router type thing to boost my signal but after it failed to work they admitted even it would not work at my location since zero connectivity to any of their towers could be effected... originally Sprint support had said all I needed was dsl and it would work over that but then said it still had to contact a tower... there are only 4.5 million people in my state so I guess our market is too small for Sprint
I am curious about your plan and pricing. $35 -$55 difference per month is a lot less than I was able to calculate out when I was looking at switching to verizon. Can you share some of the plan details? I may need to revisit.

It took me a bloody four hours to restock the thunderbolts with apps but it looks well worth the trouble. Man I really hate leaving sprint after a decade but their bloody network is falling apart. My home is still not on their coverage map for ANYTHING.. we had to roam just to talk and data was useless. The thunderbolt appears a bit brighter than the evo and perhaps a tiny bit snappier... I am able to use my 8x8 voip app on verizon 3g that never worked on sprint...nice benefit. Five phone family plan it looks like will cost $35-$55 MORE each month than Sprint..however.. with Sprint I was paying for service I did not have..not just the 4g but basic voice! The evo was great when visiting Atlanta or Vegas but was still hampered by Sprint's network everywhere in between. Sense is updated a bit on the thunderbolt.. that is cool... and I must have been the only guy using the stock carbon fiber background because it is missing...
Pass on any Thunderbolt specific questions... I am far more loyal to HTC/android than to a carrier.

Welcome to the TB nation lol. Honestly if the data didnt get atrocious over the past few months I wouldnt have switched but pretty glad I did. I only pay about $20 more a month than I did with Sprint. Still have my sprint line for now though.. thinking I may put a tablet on it.

I had a 22% "employee" discount with Sprint but that only applies to the base charge not the $10 4g penality nor the 19.95 or whatever it was for phones 3-5. Verizon is currently giving me 9% discount.. guess it works the same way... I will know for sure once I have the first invoice in 30 days or so..

Individual lines sure, our family line with zerizon was 70 more per month.. and that was with one smart phone. We now all have smart phones. Big difference here.

$120-$240 a year is significant. That's more than I pay for a years worth of Comcast internet.

There is a large difference for family plans unfortunately. I thought we were switching last summer till I started comparing numbers. What you have to take into account is that for a family plan VZW charges you the $30 data fee PER PHONE. Sprint charges that $30 data fee once for the entire family plan.
It adds up extremely quick.
And when you're in an area that gets just as good of Spring coverage as Verizon, it's kind of a no brain-er. Shoot, I'm posting off of the 4G wi-fi tether from my phone right now.

Enjoy your "unlimited" data while it lasts. You know it won't. Expect a premium data fee or 4g fee like the EVO had. Now all Sprint smartphones have it.

A couple things you didn't mention:
Sprint's nights and weekends start at 7pm, Verizon is either 9:01 or 9:31 can't remember which
Another value added feature is Sprint navigation. I am aware that you can just use Google navigation but in many cases the Sprint nav is better. With Sprint it's included, with Verizon it's $9.99/month per phone. I realize you can get a Verizon plan that's only slightly more than Sprint but I feel that if you're going to compare, you should compare apples to apples.
I'll be at 10yrs Sept. 1 and I've gotten too used to yearly upgrades that I wouldn't consider going to another company. My question for the OP: Why didn't you just call them up and ask for an Airvanna for free? I have one even though I don't really need it, my service is good.
Throttled at 10gb with 9 days left in cycle!! So sad. I got the text yesterday for the warning, and got the text today that I am throttled.
Speedtest confirms it, I usually pull 2-3 mb/s, and now at 159kb/s.

you should watch it dude. they throttled me, got about 1megabyte a second where i live, down to about 15kilobytes. They allowed me to do this for 3 months before they finally forced me onto a different plan. I am in the process of fighting for the unlimited back though. just a fair warning though, cut that **** down.

this is such bull****.. they throttle you if you hit top 5% of users in your area... so eventually they force you to use much less data... then eventually everyone starts using less data, and then the 5% mark gets lower, so then your forced to use even LESSER data, and so on and so on. When is this going to stop? When everyone uses under 2GB?

i mean it's a good measure to prevent people like you or me from using too much data. i mean, they don't expect you to use 10gbs on a mobile device. and I was pulling at least 30gbs monthly on a connection topping out at 1megabyte in my area (600-1000kilobytes per second usually). I don't blame them for throttling at all. I do blame them for thinking that I wasn't using all of that data on the mobile device. My data usage came pretty much from illegal piracy and random netflix and pandora sessions however they still believe it was from tethering so that's why i was knocked on that plan. It's hard to explain how all that data was being used w/o saying that I pirated a bunch of stuff during those months. so yeah, just be careful what you're doing with your phone, they will cut you off if you are consistently bad. If you can't take it, then switch networks to someone who offers inferior networks with unlimited data.
On the other hand. I live in California east bay... Have used1.5 gigs. I have received a warning that I'm nearing5%.. So I feel scammed.

Were you downloading movies on your phone? or streaming them from your PC? I use a ton of netflix and I have a few TV series that I stream from my PC.
My problem with being throttled is the way they are doing it.. the top 5% in your area will get throttled.
At first it may sound fair, heck, I live in MA where the top 5% puts me at 10 GB. but like i said.. once everyone starts bringing their data usage down, then the 5% cap is going to get smaller and smaller and smaller, then we'll have people getting throttled for using 1GB a month! You get what Im saying? It's BULL ****.
Eventually I will be switching carriers once the throttle point gets to about 5GB. Which.. given the way things are going, it would be about a year.

See, this is exactly what's wrong with this set-up. You're not even close to the standard 2gb and already getting warnings about throttling.
This was all on my phone. Mostly when I'm put and about I'll start a p2p on my phone and it's usually done by the time I get home. Then I do alot of surfing and video playing on my phone as well. But yeah I can see where they suspect its off a tether its just hard to explain to them its not.

well damn dude, I was just streaming tons of video from my home media server. I abuse my FiOS connection must like my ATT connection.
I just got off the phone with ATT. Throttling will always be determined by top 5% of users in the country. There is no number that is available to tell us what the top 5% will be, so we're just gonna be at the mercy of what everyone is using.
The rep couldn't tell me if the 5% took account just unlimited users or Tiered data users as well. Either way --- if the top 5% is using only 1gb, we are S.O.L.
I refuse to pay $60 for 5gb of tiered data, highway robbery.
I will continue to stream music as much as I can in an effort to raise the 5% cap for other users. otherwise, we're gonna get throttled at 1.5gb.

I have been throttled for the last 2 weeks now. I think its a bunch of BS and now most of my apps barely work now cuz my speeds are so low. I tried to contact a class action law firm and it wouldn't even send cuz my speeds are so low at times. I'll try again today but I personally don't think its legal

Fwiw, i was throttled 3 weeks into my billing period. My usage was 1.7 gigabytes (remember, over the first3 weeks of the billing cycle) at that point.
My normal down speeds range 1.5-4mbps. Now, I am throttled down to 150kbps.
Like the last poster, lots of apps are unusable and essentially has left me without data for most uses besides basic weboage viewing. This has happened the last 3 months and I have reduced my usage in fear of this the last 2. I think its BS that Im being throttled for 1.7 gigabytes of use 3/4s of the way through my billing period and I expect to just keep getting throttled every month til I disconnect att.

Before you go calling in the calvalry, I recommend reading your terms of service.. Not the ones that GayT&T gave you when you signed up, but the ones that currently apply. They always put a clause in there stating they can change the rules and whatnot you agree on, so get the latest. THEN.. have a law-savvy individual give it a once-over. These companies change their terms in order to "improve services" for everyone. This means that they may want to throttle your bandwidth in order to provide more to others while they enhance their network coverage. Basically, their network is flooded and overwhelmed with traffic and they cant keep up.. However, in my opinion, they have way more money than us and can make these upgrades as needed. Stating they cannot is basically saying "we want more money and dont care till we lose customers". I have ran into this rut a few times with cellular providers, and I honestly see no way to easily deal with it besides getting service with no contract. Providers dislike this, but it opens new means to reasonable service over time as masses change service. And as far as a lawsuit, if you find the nugget of gold to get you to win, screw a class-action lawsuit. Do it yourself with a lawyer, because it's a huge gamble either way, but the payoff will be significantly more doing it solo... Or, you can go with a class-action suit and get 10 bucks out of it. At least your point would get across..
I was also in the to 5% the last two months and am throttled. There is a thread about this in every att phone forum on xda. Total bull**** is what it is.

Must be with the 2gig users and up, because me and my wife are on the 200MB plan, and each month i come very close, to it, like 189mb give or take each month, all i get is a txt saying your close to your limit. but i never get throttled.
must be since 200MB isnt crap. for me, thats like 2 web pages lol.
I did go over once, by like 1 MB and i got charged another $15.00 , as*holes. but i am not paying an extra $$$ for the 2 gigs, when most of the time, there are wifis all over so. data is getting cheaper and cheaper, and so far sprint is the truly unlimited. But there service sux. so im sticking with att. but everyone will go to unlimited. I dont mind unlimited with throttling a little but down to only 150-250kbs, is crap. If im not using my data, and im not in a wifi area, i just turn the data part off. Im not a huge facebook fan, and I only update apps etc, when im on a wifi. so. but there are alot of people out there that update there freakbook stats every time they take a dump.

**** att and they're dirty business practices. Anyone with unlimited data is getting emails about being in the top 5% of data usage and then throttle us to the point where the phone is useless. There response is use wifi, wtf I'm suppose to stay home when i use my phone? I will be joining the class action law suit with many other pissed off customers.

I'm pretty sure Throttling is only for unlimited users. If you go over your 200 MB they'll happily charge you the overage and keep serving more.
As an aside, if you're on the 200 MB plan you can go online and change your data plan for the billing period when you go over and backdate it to the beginning of the month. then change it after the billing cycle is up.

A better ananlogy would be, "you can drive it as fast as you want for the first 5 miles."
I don't see a class-action suit being successful here. The contract is for unlimited data, not for unlimited data at maximum speed. If AT&T can show that a small percentage of users are using an extraordinarily high percentage of overall bandwidth, throttling may be seen as a legitimate answer to improve overall network performance.
Although, a case like this would never make it to trial. AT&T would settle and anybody who was throttled will likely get a couple dollars. AT&T would continue to throttle.

Sprint has the WORST coverage of all of the carriers (I tried them ALL last year), at the very least in my area they are the worst. Also, dont buy into there lies about not throttling, SPRINT THROTTLES there is no doubt about that. Also Sprint advertises a good price, but its also a lie, they charge an extra $10 that they don't mention just because. There unlimited plan costs $100+ (regardless of what they advertise, when you get the bill you will see I assure you, I have been there) and on Att I pay slightly less than $100 for much better service. I am not always happy with Att, in fact most of the time I am unhappy with them, but I'm definitely not going to take a step back to Sprint, a more expensive service with less coverage. At least when Att lies they use some inventive techniques like "The Atrix is capable of HSPA", thats not a lie, but it seams unethical. When Sprint lies they just flat out lie. They lie about their prices. They lie about throttling. The CEO goes on thier commercials and straight up lies to the whole country saying they don't throttle, then tells Forbes the truth. Hopefully you hear my warning and avoid Sprint like the plague, but if you choose to do business with them you will see for yourself soon enough.

I agree they are only throttling the unlimited users. I had that problem till I switched plans (actually they forced the switch, but that is another long thread in itself). Once I got to a metered plan, they stopped throttling, and were more than happy to charge for data overages.
ATT still thinks that customer service is to give you as little as possible based on their outdated infastructure instead of updating\modernizing and providing the customer what they want. They still can't figure whether to update their existing equipment for 3g, or go with LTE, so they are trying to do both. Two years now they been touting 3g and still have about the slowest data speeds, nowhere near what the 3g is supposed to be.
If we as individuals had the power to sue them, they would be more inclined to attempt to meet customer demands and stop the false advertising. Thank congress for taking away the right to sue.
So they offer a 2GB plan and a 4GB plan, and then they turn around and try and claim that someone using less than 2GB is among the top 5%!?
I call BS on that and that could be the only hope for a class action suit; make at&t prove the data usage they claim. With netflix and youtube and all sorts of streaming services there is no way that 1.7GB puts you in the top 5%.
By the way, I'm at 1.8GB about halfway through my billing period on normal usage for me and I have never been throttled yet.

thats what really gets me going about some of these carriers, i'm on a unlimited plan with verizon but am careful not to overdo it, keep hearing cases of people getting throttled etc...its seems to me unlimted should never be limited, perhaps we need to hand them a dictionary

I'm assuming it's still your home market and I'm guessing that has something to do with the FCC and how they are getting away with it. There's a lot of rules that pertain to your market. I read a little about it when trying to port two lines over that were from different markets. Couldn't happen, was only able to keep one of the numbers.
I had the same problem a few months back.
Speculation from a lower division rep is that they're trying to push everyone who has the unlimited data to tier plans because as far as I know, a lot of users with unlimited who have gotten the top 5% warning in the past are getting capped around 2GB
I spoke with an upper division rep and this is what they said, and this is not word for word:
If you get flagged once as a top 5% user, you will stay flagged indefinitely. Now you're thinking if less and less people want to get capped, they'll use less data, and therefore the top data usage number will change, that sounds exactly like what they're trying to do. I asked about that, but she said she has no idea about how they actually do the capping except once you're flagged, you're flagged, especially since you're getting capped around 2GB.
