OK, now usually I've understood that sense runs at a lower frame rate when scrolling between home screens than GoLauncher or LauncherPro. Live wallpapers have only made things laggier with Sense, til today.
I downloaded the "ICS Phase Beam" LWP from the market and lowered the FPS settings to the absolute minimum (10fps animation, 10fps scrolling) and all of a sudden my sense scrolling has INCREASED in frame rate, delivering a smoother experience than I ever have gotten with a static wallpaper.
This has left me a bit confused as to why things would be smoother with an animated live wallpaper than a static image. Any ideas? Is there somehow a way we could create a "fake" live wallpaper with only a static image to increase Sense's fps? Or is it the fact that static wallpapers are large JPGs compared to this LWP procedurally generated shapes and colors, resulting in less data to be accessed at once or something to that effect?
Regardless, if you're on sense I definitely recommend checking out the phase beam LWP and turning down the FPS to see what I mean

The Nexus One is capable of using 16M we all know this!
But the stock gallery aka 3DGallery is not only limited to 65k but also limits the wallpapers set there to 65k, resulting with color banding and losing color richness.
I found a very helpfull app for free on the Market: Wallpaper Set and Save You browse for a wallpapers folder, then choose a wallpaper and set it!
Voila! you have now a rich 16m colors wallpaper of your choice, no more color banding
Wow, thank you! I didn't know there was a diffference between setting in gallery and WS&S.
I can confirm that there is a better color representation when setting in WS&S. It's not drastic, but it does remove the abrupt color change spots (color banding).
+1!
I don't know if anyone knows this, but on stock launcher, as well as Helix the home screens run a lot faster without a wallpaper (versus Live Wallpaper, or just static image).
To disable wallpapers just set the wall paper as a live wallpaper and open your favorite task manager app. End the process of just the live wallpaper, and not of the live wallpaper chooser. For most cases it should close out only the wallpaper and doesn't apply the default Nexus neural network live wallpaper. You should then have speeds comparable to Home++'s launcher, etc.
Of course once you reboot your phone or allow the wallpaper to reopen you'll lose the setting.

where can i get this wallpaper at?
btw have you guys seen the bokeh wallpaper? i personally love it and i think its better than the desire live wallpaper (i flashed the sense rom just to rip the wall from the rom but i am having trouble installing. its apk if you guys wanna try it)
Has anyone noticed that wallpapers are still banding with this app now? It used to work perfectly, but in the past few months (maybe since froyo? not sure) high gradient wallpapers are banding again, such as the HTC Desire rainbow, grey-to-white snow sceneries, windows7 betta fish wallpaper, etc. Anyone have any suggestions on how to make my wallpapers stop banding again?

You probably already found this somewhere else since it's been so long, but here it is. Sorry for the delay.
No problems at all, all the pics are working with 16m colors and no banding,it has nothing to do with FW anyway, the N1 is capable of 16m but it's the HTC heritage app ''gallery'' that is limited.
Use only Wallpapers Set and Save from the Market not the gallery or gallery 3D
Does anyone with a D2 bother using Live Wallpapers, such as the ones included with the stock ROM or custom versions? I generally didn't care for them until I noticed some really nice ones included with custom ROMs, but actually applying them causes a large amount of screen lag. Transitions between homescreens becomes very choppy and bothersome, and even the app drawer is choppy when the actual wallpaper is not visible. Performance as a whole seems to be hindered significantly, as well. The only animation that doesn't seem choppy is the wallpaper itself...
Is there any way to use Live Wallpapers without these ill effects? I can deal with the shortened battery life, because ROMs like Fission are already great in this regard, but when the transitions between homescreens are reduced to about 3 frames in total, it's pretty annoying. Even the custom transitions included with LauncherPro aren't very smooth, and one is flat out unusable. Considering the D2 is one of the better phones on the market right now in terms of performance -- at least when you look at benchmark results -- how can people even bother with Live Wallpapers? Do they ignore the slowdown, or do they simply not experience it?
I get some slowdown even without live wallpaper if I'm flicking between home screens just after booting up or coming out of standby.
depends on how complex the live wallpaper you are using is
im using the gingerbread microbes one and my phone still flies, i used to have the super mario and doom ones and they would bog the phone down some.
Seriously, why do some live wallpapers cause some horrendous lag on homescreen while some live wallpapers barely cause any lag?
I would think that 1 ghz dual core and 1gb ram is more than enough to handle any kind of live wallpapers. Even overclocking seems to not reduce live wallpaper lag.
Is this just a flaw in Android?
It seems that fully 3D rendered live wallpapers don't have much lag while 2D live wallpapers have the worst lag.
And how is it that some custom launchers are able to reduce this lag?
I used ADW Launcher EX on Honeycomb and I know for a fact that it literally eliminated the lag from a live wallpaper when the same live wallpaper caused really bad lag on stock launcher.
Unfortunately the Tegra 2 GPU isn't very good, especially at 1280 x 800 resolution
it just can't handle the load.
Enabling "forced 2d gpu rendering" helps a bit with the lag. In some cases it helps a lot.
The reason some launchers works better with LWP is simply because they are more light-weight than the stock.

No, it's a flaw in the Tegra2. It's a really crappy SoC.
Does this lag happen even on Tegra 3?
No, T3 has a much better GPU
sigh. Can't believe something like this is making me want to upgrade.
Stock launcher seems to create more lag with live wallpapers, using one like ADW Launcher EX gives a much smoother experience
Some live wallpaper are better made then others, tegra 2 can run very nice ones without lag, but that depends on the developer. Tegra 2 is not that bad. If tegra 3 can run those bad ones smoothly you better belive it will still be a battry drainer

Nope. I've tried literally every available live wallpapers, paid and free.
Full 3D rendered live wallpapers don't have much lag, while 2D live wallpapers with static background have a ton of lag. It doesn't depend on the developer as much. I've tried both 3d and 2d live wallpapers from the SAME DEVELOPER and the 2d one lagged horribly while the 3d one didn't.
Tegra 2 is just that bad. Overclocking doesn't even reduce the wallpaper lag.
People still whining about battery drain from live wallpaper? It's not significant enough to bother me.
I would rather have no lag and battery drain than lag and battery drain.
It's not just about live wallpapers though. Everything is just kinda too slow. I feel more of this everyday. Maybe I am too used to the speed of my desktop or laptop.
Can't wait for a decent quad core tablet to come out.

No idea what youre talking about. OC'ing helps a lot. But Force 2d GPU rendering is by far the most effective for LWP's.
Actually come to think of it, Ive never encountered a LWP that lags... All some do is slow the launcher down to a halt, resulting in anywhere between 1 and 5sec lag between swiping the screens/open the app drawer.
But the LWP has never lagged for me.
If you could give me a name of such a LWP (free, please), Id gladly try it.

Sorry if I wasn't being clear, but the underlined is exactly what I meant by LWPs having lag.
Yea the live wallpapers themselves don't lag but they cause the launcher, including app drawer, to perform horribly.

Ah yeah, then we're sharing the experience then.
But for me, at least, OC'ing does indeed help with it.
But that said, Ive also noticed that some ROMS perform better with LWP than others.
For example EOS build 12 could play (is that the correct term? well whatever) some LWP's without a single hickup, while build 19 is struggling a lot on the same LWP, launcher, cpu setting etc (but the most strange part is that the more I use build 19, the better it starts performing with LWP's...)
also @anarox, Yes, force GPU rendering isnt without its issues. I guess this is sort of a "you cant both have the cake and eat it" thing
So I have a DHD with cyanogenmod 7 and using the scrolling wallpaper (so the backround moves when I change screens). I have 7 screens and wonder what resolution the backround image would need?
It feels like the 12mb 3800x3600 backround picture is slowing down the phone ;D
Thanks
For a scrolling wallpaper I think it's 960x800 ((480(x2))x800).
Yeah a 3800x3600 image is definitely gonna slow things down.

Hi!
Perhaps i´m missing something here and i´ll happily concede that this format is somewhat unusual but if there are 7 homescreens across wouldn´t the best fitting resolution be ((480x7))x800) ~ 3360 x 800?
Regards
ELO
AFAIK you scroll across in gradual steps as opposed to a complete screen width across.
So one of my observations about 3rd party launchers on this phone is homescreen scrolling has a slight stutter at times even when the fastest speed setting is in place. So tonight I realized I hadn't checked out the LWP's and decided to do so....I set one as my wallpaper and holy ****, my homescreens scrolled fast and smooth, no stutter at all. I put back a regular WP and sure as ****, the stutter was back. For all of these tests, power saving was on. In comparison, TW is fast and smooth with no stutter no matter what.
Any idea as to why it would be faster and smoother with a LWP vs. a regular one?

You are right sir, I was wondering what changed, I was running lwps then switched to static but didn't link the stuttering to that. You're a goddamn genius.

Perhaps gpu rendering is turning on when a live wallpaper is being used. Maybe try forcing gpu rendering in the developer options.

umm, lap effect the fluidity on ALL android phones to SOME degree
It's likely kicking the phone out of power saving mode, upping the clocks (cpu, gpu, or both) So while you should see increased smoothness, you will see decreased battery life as well.
nevermind.......
What I noticed on apex launcher, to get smooth transitions on static wallpaper. Go to apex settings / homescreen settings / wallpaper mode ( single none scrolling)
Transitions became smooth for me, and or alternatively set live wallpaper.

PS still shows enabled though....tomorrow i'm gonna run a static WP but this time turn PS off and see how that works out as far as battery life is concerned.
The power saving option is doing something weird on the GPU.
My device is rooted so I can limit my CPU clock speed with Voltage Control and when I put it to 1026 Mhz (wich is the same as the PS option) I don't have any lag on my Nova Prime home screen.
However when I put back to defeault my CPU setting and turn PS on I get the same kind of stutter/lag as you on Nova and I see 1026MHz as my top CPU clock in Voltage Control.
Conclusion : PS option is most likely limiting the clock speed of the GPU for downloaded apps but a LWP might be able to use it anyway as this feature is built in android as is TW on our SGS III.

So you can't see that lag from the time you swipe to the time it actually responds? That would drive me crazy!
