I just seen that T-Mobile has finally announced that the release date is June 2nd. I have been waiting for a new Android phone from T-Mobile that has a keyboard. I'm wondering how many of the loyal G1 users are planning on upgrading to this phone or will be waiting for something better.

Im def getting one for my bday, love the design of this thing. I dont care if it doesnt have an emerald, dragon, scorpion in it either.
I will definitely not be getting this. I had a chance to try out the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 while in India, and I liked it. While it was only running 1.6, SE's custom UI was fantastic and smooth. I may get that or another offering -- there're certain requirements I need, such as a physical keyboard. I've not read the specs on the MyTouch Slide, but if this Engadget post is true, it'll be worth it to skip over this phone (at least, for an advanced user--this phone and it's predecessor seem to be targeted toward mid-range users).

...and we suspect that the lack of a more modern CPU (the Slide has an older generation Qualcomm chip) is going to spell trouble just around the corner.

EDIT: These may be the possible specs:
-600 MHz ARM CPU processor
-512 MB RAM
-512 MB on-board storage
-8 GB MicroSD card included in the vox
-Android 2.1 with HTC Sense and multi-touch support
-5 Megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash

Again, I'd say average(?) for a mid-range phone. It's all relative to what a person is looking for in a phone/what their uses are.
Code:
Mytouch Slide
-3.4 inch HVGA display
-600 MHz ARM CPU processor
-512 MB RAM
-512 MB on-board storage
-8 GB MicroSD card included in the box
-Android 2.1 with HTC Sense and multi-touch support
-5 Megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash
vs.
Code:
Moto Droid
-3.7 inch WVGA display
-600 Mhz Arm A8 processor
-256 MB RAM
-512 MB ROM
-16 GB sdcard included
-stock Android 2.1
-5 megapixel camara with flash
When you compare the slide to the droid, which until last month was the #2 android phone behind the nexus, and still in the top few behind the nexus and its cousins, the device actually stands well on its own. The droid sold well over a million units. The slide has double the ram and half the pixels of the droid, meaning it will work extremely fast. The rest of the specs seem almost exactly the same.
I would get the phone only if cyanogen gets it.
I so wanted to get a MyTouch Slide... but then HTC Vision (http://www.gsmarena.com/qwertyfied_htc_vision_in_the_works_comes_with_android-news-1677.php) was caught by some people as a possible QWERTY Desire! Now I am going to wait for that... Having to suffer with G1's low end CPU for so long, I am not going to change to a minor increase in CPU spec... going for at least a Snappy!
Hey look! A phone that comes out two years after the G1 with only *slightly* better hardware when there are superphones out on other carriers selling for cheaper! Epic fail, TMO. This rumored "project emerald" phone, on the other hand, better have some balls or i'll have completely lost faith in them.
I got my hands on a Slide about 3 days ago in a T-Mo store.. not really impressed.. I did a side by side comparison of what it could do and what I could do and with speed. minor minor speed difference.. Slide beat my old ass g1 by maybe a 1/4 sec while loading apps and running videos and music..
Plus the Slides keyboard feels icky and small. I'd have to use the Swype with that phone.. but wait.. my phone has Swype too..
I have no good reason to waste any of my 3 T-Mo upgrades until something better comes along.
im waiting for the big project emerald phone until then Ill rock CM 5 ON MY G1
slide
I like the idea of this phone, My G1 is dying slowly and im not looking to spend $500 on a phone when i have better things to do with $500. So I'll probably be getting this, only thing I absolutly can't live without is the tethering. So, im praying that the mytouch slide with be...
A) easy to root
B) use almost the same roms as the mytouch 3g
C) be supported by cyanogen or another awesome rom maker here thet isnt into all the fluff BS.
Ill be getting this as long as I can teather.

Hey XDA,
I currently have a MyTouch 3g 32B. Yeah I know, ancient, right? I'm currently looking to upgrade to either a T-mobile MyTouch 4g or a T-mobile G2 (aka Desire Z).
I'm into custom ROMs, radios, hboots, SPLs, kernels, you guys know the drill. I'm pretty dedicated to Cyanogenmod, and I've noticed that they only support the G2 right now, I haven't really heard anything about the MyTouch and CM. So this gives the G2 a big advantage over the MyTouch.
Keyboard doesn't matter. The front facing camera gives the MyTouch a little bit of an edge. I'm leaning towards G2 because of modding.
This isn't really a versus thread, as I have almost all the info I want from gsmarena.com. But I'm having a hard time comparing the CPU and GPU in the two phones. Not much turns up on Google. Obviously the speeds are different, but that doesn't matter much as I'll be overclocking it.
So which phone has a better CPU/GPU? I've heard the G2's GPU is currently the best, not sure how true that is. I will be using the phone for emulators.
The question: what does XDA think of the CPUs/GPUs? Can anyone give me the model of GPU the phones use?
Thanks!
Nick
P.S. Cross-posted to G2 general.
I had the G2 and I can tell you 100% this phone is hands down better. CM will come to this device soon as well. Don't settle for a phone based on what it's development is at in a given time. Look at what is better in terms of hardware and over all device specs. With 786 mb of RAM and FFC and perm root this MT4G nails the coffin on the heavy loose dangling hinged G2.
A good developer is going to be receiving his MT4G really soon to pick up the CM port for our MT4G.
I also love the MT4G and there WILL be many roms on it just look in the general discussion section where they have raised money to buy phones for devs to allow them to make roms. but about the G2 hinge problem just check it at the store before you buy it (hold it upside down ...) my friend did this and he got 1 with a very sturdy hinge. As to your gpu/cpu I don't know but I think the CPU is the same (don't take my word for it though).
CPU =MSM8x55 at 1Ghz
GPU = Adreno 205
The MSM7x30, MSM8x55, and the MSM8x50a all use a 45nm process. The speeds are 800Mhz, 1Ghz, and 1.3Ghz respectively.
The Adreno 205 is a significant performance enhancement from the Adreno 200 found in the first gen snapdragon processors found in the Nexus One, etc.
The MT4G MSM8x55 is likely an o/c'd version of the MSM7x30 as alot of references to MSM7x30 are made in build.prop and throughout the rest of the OS. Same situation probably from the MSM8x55 to the MSM8x50a. Intel does this with their cpu's all the time. O/C, stamp a different model number on it, and sell it at a premium price.
MSM = Mobile Station Modem

Thanks I was looking for a post like this. So basically what the 4g has over the G2 is the FFC and more RAM? I kind of like the look of the G2, it's more.. professional looking? I'm not sure yet. Thanks for the posts so far guys!

To each his own. I personally had 2 g2's and ended up sending them both back for random reboots and loose hinges. The reboots were fixed with the ota and custom roms I think but that hinge made me almost drop the phone several times and was going to do nothing but get worse over time. And it seemed to loosen up very quickly. Just FYI.
My MyGlacier 4G MINE!!!
I too owned the G2 and it was a great device. It was smoother than the 4g but I'm sure that's due to the fact that it doesn't have a skin on top #cough cough# sense LOL
... I really miss the hinge and keyboard... you really can't go wrong with either device but the 4g is cheaper and has more features...

If you can be patient. I'd imagine a port from CM will be forth coming very soon.
I came from a 32B myself and this phone even with Sense is way better.
I personally like a physical keyboard like my wife's Slide, but her and I both like the MT4G better.
Your choice though.
the mt4g is okay but the g2 is nothing to sneeze at, sense is nice but stock is better in my opinion, hmmm I wonder which phone will get Gingerbread first if the other gets it at all (officially anyway) you know some things work but most things are broken.

I heard the reason why the g2 and the mt4g only have about 1gb instead of the 4gb as advertised is because some of that space is being saved up for gingerbread so eventually both devices will get updated
BTW just because the g2 currently can run CM doesn't mean that is superior than the mt4g just wait until they release some roms for this bad boy and will see how much this phone kicks ass even the stock Rom runs great just use LauncherPro instead of mySense no lag whatsoever
I had a G2 for about 2 weeks, and sent it back under the buyers remorse. Basically in stock form I like the G2 better, but felt the mytouch has a bit more longevity to it where it has more ram..that said I dont think you can go wrong with either phone. I am a stock froyo guy over sense or my sense crap but thats just my personal preference.
Running different benchmarks when clocked the same the G2 pulled ahead by a hair on most but I credit that to the mytouch running my sense, in actually using the devices I found the G2 to be smoother as well, but again the whole my sense thing again.
The mytouch line always seemed kinda kiddish to me somehow and it seems that a new model is always on the horizon, not trying to insult anyone that has one, or likes them..hell I have one currently lol, but I just cant shake the feeling that I am using a lesser phone, even though I know I am not.
Side by side I found the G2 to have a better display, colors looked more vivid and eye popping despite the mytouch having a slightly larger screen, the mytouch is slightly washed out looking, but that was only evident to me when they were side by side, using the phone on its own the mytouch is just fine and you dont really notice the colors and stuff when its not in a side by side direct comparison.
I suppose the end result would be whatever one you like better, both are good and the mytouch will have more ROMs for it shortly so that shouldnt really weigh in on your decision.
Please post questions in Q&A section.
So would I be taking a major step backwards going from my G2 to a N1?
Help me with a decision please.
Regards

Well its not an upgrade at all other then if you just want android 2.3 sooner.
Far as hardware goes the G2 is better in every way.
Faster CPU
Faster GPU
Better Touch Screen (N1 only has 2 inputs at most and they are flaky at best =/)
Hardware keyboard (For some)
The N1 does have a really large dev support on XDA but the G2 is getting bigger and bigger but to be honest I would stick with the G2.
I switched from the N1 to the G2 btw.
Indeed going back to the N1 is a downgrade. The G2 is probably one of the most powerful Android phones out at the moment.
Absolutely a downgrade. The hardware in the N1 is very "first gen" compared to the Vision. Only advantage the N1 has is the slimness and power charge points on the bottom that docks can use, but Google stopped selling the docks...
I agree with everyone else. Coming from a cosmetic standpoint, the G2 looks almost exactly the the N1 but with a keyboard. Coming from a hardware standpoint, Better screen, CPU, GPU. and Coming from a dev standpoint, personally I am very loyal to Cyanogen who i believe now uses his G2 as his main phone and not his N1. But even besides ROMs, the G2 has been overclocked to 1.8 ghz stable...the highest my N1 ever got to was 1.12 ghz I think.
The G2 just came out...give it some time for dev support. Remember the N1 is already a year old.
I just came from an N1 and I believe the G2 is so much smoother. Sure, the N1 has all the geeks behind it, but the G2 army is building. I prefer my G2 over the N1 hands down.
What is your reason? If you are downgrading as a temp measure to get a next gen/dual core device early next year then that is an option,... but if you are downgrading to keep for 12+ months then you must be mad!!!!!
... needs must and all that, up to you pal.
It seems like Cyanogen is going to remain fairly minimalistic. The long term support of the EVO 4G seems to have a long life expectancy.
I know there are slight hardware improvements with the EVO 3D. But CM7 runs like a champ on the EVO 4G. I really don't see too much of a speed increase with the EVO 3D with Cyanogen's ROM's. Plus there are allot of uncertainty with the boot loader and the bugs that will be associated with the new hardware.
I can see the reason to upgrade for sense 3.0 (even though we already got a port). But I see no significant reason to get he EVO 3D for CM7.
So my question is "are you as a Cyanogen user going to purchase the EVO 3D?"

you say slight hardware improvements...and you say you really dont see the speed increase with the 3d...but you realize its pretty much twice the phone right? dual core? twice the ram? twice the internal memory? and there is no question the bootloader is unlocked and set to s-off.
either way the 3d will be much faster no matter what rom your running. but my personal opinion...i'm in no hurry to change phones. i'll wait till i can get an upgrade then decide what i want to do. evo is plenty fast, but my needs will change i'm sure...
cheers!

slight improvement... lol. yeah, i'm getting the evo 3d, not for the 3d so much, more for the firepower of the thing. it is leaps and bounds beyond the evo4g.
i think with the evo4g a lot of people got cyanogen to make it run faster and smoother but with the evo3d the hardware will carry sense 3.0 like a champ. but then again there are those who like the plain AOSP ..

Okay "slight improvement" might be an understatement but I think the question still remains the same. Is there enough improvement to warrant a CM user speed increase?
I am really on the fence with this phone. I could call Sprint and get an update override and buy this phone. I just don't want to waste it if there is a phone (i.e. nexus 3) that will blow the socks off the EVO 3D coming in the next year. I know no one has a crystal ball but I just don't know if there is enough there in the EVO 3D.
Like I said in the OP if I was a Sense user this would be a no brainier for me at least.

Adreno 220 over Adreno 200 alone is a large improvement.
However, I am not getting one yet. Im still happy with my EVO performance, so as long as that is the case, I might as well wait for "the next big thing".

So do you think there are some CM users that will revert back to Sense 3.0 if they get the EVO 3D?
I can see that. The Kingdom port is awesome. I just really like AOSP. I have been tempted though. I guess that is part of the dilemma.
I have one on pre-order. I am a gold premier so I can get it for pretty cheap. My Evo screen is all jacked up due to the coating on it coming off where the swype keyboard is and I was basically going to have to pay to get that fixed vs. trading the phone in for $150.
Dual core, better GPU, more memory, better battery(supposedly), etc...
I have really loved my Evo running CM7 and will possibly put in on the EVO3d as soon as it comes out for it(Toast said he was going to keep it updated for the EVO3d) as long as we dont lose to many of the 3d features.
I think it's to soon to know about the real performance improvements because I dont think many of the benchmark apps have been re-written for the new hardware yet.
What about the Charging port being on the side of the phone?
Also the lack of kickstand?
And does the phone sit on the camera lens?
Thought about it, but thinking long term, I'm wondering if Sprint is going to ride the WiMax horse into the sunset. They already have made noises about LTE a possibility and 'just a throw of a switch' away.
I'm very happy with my EVO with CM7 and Tiamet. I think the real push to upgrade will come when Sprint introduces a phone that will do both WiMax AND LTE. I think they will do this if they start to roll out LTE in some areas and still have WiMax in legacy areas. I think that will be a killer phone. I'm not gazing into a crystal ball here, and I don't profess to know what Sprint is going to do with Clear, but until my EVO becomes a real dog with new apps, I see myself keeping it a long while.
Looking in the crystal ball. A phone without buttons would be awesome and one that does LTE with Wimax will be great as well.
it is good to have options but hard to choose when the options are avalible.
i'll definitely be getting the 3d. it is twice the phone the evo 4g is.
Still loving my evo 4g, a faster phone isn't needed for me anyway...But if I wanted a faster phone like da 3d if I would wait till cm7 is on it...Been off sense for so long and really don't miss it lol...Just now I had a friend show me his new HTC incredible 2 and I told him gps is on and for the life of me I couldn't remember where the menu u have to go to turn it off lol

Come on, do the math! Adreno 220 is only %10 better than the Adreno 200.
It sounds to me like the 3D would be a valuable upgrade if you are running/wanting Sense 3.0.
I think that for an AOSP user it is an option but not a major upgrade as AOSP ROMs are very lightweight and fast on the 4G.
It would be nice to see a benchmark for CM7 between the two phones.
I think that the conclusion would be that Sense needs the better hardware where as the AOSP user would see little improvement.
p.s. I am not saying that the 3D is not the better/faster phone. But for AOSP it is probably overkill.
I am pre-ordering my 3D and it is my hope we can load a downclocked ROM on there to get super long battery life. If there is no significant improvement in battery, then I might just make the switch back from CM over to Sense.
I already have my 3D pre-ordered at Radio Shack. I love my 4G but I need a new toy. CM will be great on the 3D and I'm excited to see what the developers will be able to do with all that power. I will miss my 4G, by far the best phone I've ever owned. Probably the best device I've ever owned.

I've been using a g1 for the longest time, and have gone through tons of roms. It's finally time to move on though... the g1's community has largely ditched it's outdated hardware.
I'm looking at the vibrant and the G2 for tmobile, and the hardware seems to be roughly equal, with the g2 having a slight advantage in terms of muscle... hard keyboards are nice but I'm sure I can adjust.
I'm wondering how active the mod community is for the vibrant. I'm assuming no sense roms... I like sense but it's no big deal, I hear MIUI is nice. How stable/up-to-date are the better roms for the vibrant?
How do you vibrant owners like your phones? Do you wish you had anything from the G2?
Thanks
The vibrant is mostly dead. There are lots of stable 2.2 roms and tons of non stable 2.3 roms. We will never get official 2.3 ever. Go with the g2. Just keep in mind its a lot harder to root than the vibrant

This is the kind of answer I was looking for, thanks. Looks like I'm going with the g2, unless somebody has a terribly compelling reason not to.
I aslo used a G1 for a long time:
I did have a G2 for a few months, and I'm pretty happy I switched to the Vibrant.
You just can't beat the Vibrant's screen, it's not even comparable to the G2's screen. Like night and day. It's also slightly bigger, which is good, because I have big hands.
The G2 is thick and heavy, if you drop it, it feels as if it would shatter into a million pieces. The Vibrant is light, and impressively thin.
Support from HTC on the G2 > Than the Vibrant's support from Samsung.
The Vibrant community has done a good job with putting Gingerbread on it, considering we don't have a source. I have a mostly bug free version of MIUI running on mine. My wife and I both use it as a daily driver.
I also prefer the Vibrant. In fact I prefer it so much we have 3 at our house. Latest one arriving tomorrow.
Development is mostly dead because CM7 is now bug-free and stable (except for mediocre battery-only about 15 hours on charge when you use the phone)
Phone itself is great. Screen and physical dimensions and weight are obviously big plusses and with CM7, it competes with dual cores just fine in speed. There's no slowdowns, lag, or anything like that. Tbh, I truly think it's the best single core phone at the moment. Dual cores are obviously better but also more expensive. You can pick up a Vibrant in good condition for $215 shipped.
G2 is also obviously another good choice. Personal preference there. Just know both phones are ridiculously fast on 2.3 and both can be overclocked a lot. Vibrant can push a good 1.4-1.5Ghz and G2 can be overclocked up to 1.6? I'm not all that familiar there.
Thanks for your input folks. I am aware that the screen on the vibrant is probably it's biggest selling point. Both phones are solid across the board hardware wise. The most important factor to me is the availability of solid roms for daily use, and right now it looks like the g2 is better supported by HTC.
If your rooting stable ROM's aren't a problem, but if your not then your screwed!
