so if you're like me you've had your g1 for almost a year now and if you're like me it's still in good condition, but not new. what android phone are you going to go to after this? i havent heard of any new android phones coming to t-mobile
the only other "decent" android phone that T-Mobile has is the mytouch 3g but personally i think that it is a step down, i am considering a switch to Verizon because of the Droid
you can buy a brand new unlocked HTC Tattoo for 379
I thought it would be different this time... T-Mobile paves the way with Android... and is looking to be left in the dust by every other carrier... Again... Still waiting on 3G too... O wait, we do have "Project Dark"... Sigh...
I will be giving them until my contract is up... I hope Cyanogen and the other Devs can help ease some of the pain...

Personally I think the droid is more goofy looking the the G1 was. I really like my mytouch just wish it had a keyboard. If you are all up in arms about android 2.0 stock MT3G will get it and I am sure the devs here will make sure the G1 gets it as well. Only device that I really wish T-Mo would have gotten was the Sprint HTC Hero phone. That one is awsome, again just needs a keyboard. I am sure there will be more just takes time. And I don't get 3g either but really don't need it edge works good enough for what I want to do while I am out and I can sacrifie full 3g coverage for the difference in cost thank you
I won't be leaving the Dream until there's a decent phone out there with a keyboard. The Sholes/Droid's keyboard may work, but we're still hurting for a 5-row keyboard. Samsung's Moment has the least pain (with a dedicated row for numbers) but it's on Sprint's network. I left Sprint for greener pastures and I have no intent to return.
I'd like to see HTC make another Android phone with a keyboard, and a higher processor. And if they could take a hint from Samsung and include x gigs of internal space, that would be wonderful. A camera flash would help as well, but I won't hold my breath for that, not out of HTC anyway.
As for service, T-Mobile's 3G network is working well here in Minnesota (Twin Cities), so I have no complaints.

Yeah, sorry. It was rumored the droid would run the 1Ghz Snapdragon. It will be the Qualcomm 550mhz. This is from boygeniusreport.

That's simply not true. A 2 second Google search and they clearly have different processors.
I am seriously considering this phone. I have to have a keyboard, I hate not having a 3.5mm jack, and the G1 was never "speedy" to begin with. With Cyanaogen Rom's, it certainly helps, but I would love some better hardware. I like the idea of Verizon simply for better coverage and faster 3g or 4g web, but I here nothing about complaints as far as customer service. I would stick with T-Mobile if some phones that interested me were at least in the works, but every HTC phone has something that keeps me from buying it (no keyboard, no 3.5mm jack, etc).
I love the large display, still has a keyboard without being bulky, faster and more memory, metal case, 3.5 mm audio, what is not to love??

The first Verizon Droid phone is using an OMAP3430 processor, which is a Cortex A8 based ARM.
The G1 Uses the Qualcomm 7201 chipset, which has a ARM11 based processor.
The A8 and ARM11 are very different processors with the A8 being significantly more powerful. I do not know how well this will be reflected in the end products, but from a processor standpoint they are at least a generation apart. Anandtech had an article a few months ago if you really are interested in the differences.

should give you an idea. The iPhone 3G is an ARM11 and the 3GS is a cortex A8.
EDIT2: To sort of make this post on topic. I am waiting for a new phone with T-Mo 3g, A8 or better processor, and physical keyboard. Once a new phone comes out with all three I will jump ship. A T-Mo version of the droid would work for me.
Personally I'm waiting for my contract to end, I don't have the extra cash to spend on dropping my 2 year agreement. When it is up, I may switch to Verizon considering their service, as well as the fact that they are getting the HTC Dragon, with the 1Ghz Snapdragon processor.
Don't forget how VZW likes to seriously lock down and cripple their os and fill the phones with their bloatware. that's the main reason I don't like their phones, and not to mention they got the most expenaive plans in comparison. I hope [email protected] will pick up some nice and rootable android phones that I can unlock and use. [email protected] always gets good phones too.

Btw, since someone mentioned the N900, I was REALLY excited about it when I first saw the promo video MONTHS ago. But Nokia and T-mo are screwing up it's introduction big time. They're simply waiting too long to release it, as there are other phones that I think will be better on market by the time it comes out. Seriously, resistive touchscreen on the N900 vs something like the Moto Droid? I'll take the Droid. Plus Nokia's already working on Maemo6, which will probably come out next year. It seems Nokia is inept at this point...

I would echo the URL. Please let this be real. It would be my first non-HTC phone in almost 5 years but I have not seen anything in the HTC pipeline that meets what I want.
As far as the N900 is concerned it is available on the NokiaUSA site and has been confirmed to work with the T-Mo 3g. It just appears that T-Mo is not picking it up for distribution through thier channels.
The Samsung Behold 2 has been confirmed to have a 800 Mhz processor. No word on the architecture though. Rumors abound that Tegra is involved, but I'm not convinced.
Anyways, that's a Nov 18 release date and a T-Mo exclusive. So if you can wait 2 weeks, you'll have one slick android device.

For me it has to be the desire, I want a big screen, AMOLED, and a snapdragon... but I'm still envious of that all in one aluminium case...
I'd have to second that and say Desire. Bigger screen, faster processor is great! And the added bonus is that (according to current rumors) the Desire will actually be available on AT&T, and I won't have to buy it from Canada!

If it would be me I will take the Hero now or wait the Legend to June (sweeter price)
as a htc hero user the htc legend doesn't seem to bring enough new features to the table in order to make a new purchase. especially after hero gets its 2.1 update.
therefore the only option is HTC desire for me.
I'm gonna skip them both, htc is going to release a 1,5 ghz smartphone this year.
Only had my hero for 7 months now, still not bored with it or even thinking it's slow.
So I don't see the need to upgrade this round.
However, I think it is very possible that Hero accessories will be compatible with Legend.
So you can reuse your desktop dock, car holder, sleeve, etc.

To be fair I've had my Hero about 9 months and love it to bits ... was finding it a touch slow in areas, but just put on one of the 2.1 eris ports and the thing flies! ... so I'm only really looking at the bigger screen... and if I can wait longer then I get more choice...

Called the htc scorpion, rumors are that it's being released in the US before the summer. supposed to support wimax, not much different from the other htc phones. Just a faster chip and wimax. And a amoled screen.
Desire!! Although I'm looking forward to hearing more about this multitouch flaw. As it has the exact specs the nexus one got..

Display: It is hard to tell from the leaked pictures, but the Slide will feature a larger display than the original MT3G. Our source compared the display with an iPhone 3G S (3.5 in) and said they were the same size. I was unable to determine if the display was AMOLED or not.
Camera: The Slide features a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus. This is an improvement over the MT3G which had 3 MP and no flash.
Processor: We don’t know the exact model number, but I did confirm it has a 600 MHz ARM11 processor. This could be the Qualcomm MSM7227 or MSM7627.
Memory: From what we can tell the Slide features the same 512 MB ROM / 512 MB RAM as seen in the HTC Nexus One. The phone should ship with an 8 GB microSD card.
HSPA+: The source claimed the Slide will be used by T-Mobile to promote their HSPA+ network, but I do not think it supports the full HSPA+ speeds. Instead I believe it supports HSPA 7.2 which is compatible with the new HSPA+ network. Qualcomm just started to sample some of their HSPA+ chipsets (MSM8260, MSM8660 and MSM8270), but those have a 1.2 GHz Scorpion processor which is faster than what is used in the Slide.
Battery: 1300 mAh as reported earlier.
Operating system: This was already known, but the Slide has the latest Android 2.1 firmware (still kernel 2.6.29) and HTC’s new Sense UI. All of the latest Sense UI features like Leap are included, but the UI has been tweaked to T-Mobile’s liking. It is the same UI as the leaked Espresso ROM that was revealed earlier this year. Users can select between 5-7 home screens.
Hardware extras: The Slide features a proximity and light sensor. The external speaker is much louder than the original MT3G. An optical trackpad is used in place of the trackball.
Multitouch: The Browser, Gallery, and Maps applications all support pinch zoom.
Live Wallpapers: Sorry, these are not supported. This is not that big a surprise considering the processor is ARM11 based.
Accounts & sync: Since the device is Android 2.1, it supports multi accounts. There were a few new additions not seen on my Nexus One. Flickr is now an integrated account you can sync. There is also the option to sync your T-Mobile account so they can store your photos.
Software extras: Lots of T-Mobile bundled apps like AppPack, My Account, and more. There is a myTouch Music app which is a semi-clone of Pandora. Quick Office is included along with some games like Abduction. None of the bundled apps can be removed at this time. Swype is the default virtual keyboard, but users can switch to the HTC keyboard or a new one called Dragon Dictionary.
Gaming: Our unofficial gaming benchmark for mid-range Android phones has become Raging Thunder 2. The game was designed for high-end phones like the Droid and N1, but the source claims it plays at an acceptable frame rate on the Slide. This is a surprise because we tried the game in our Motorola Devour review (also 600 MHz ARM11) and it was not playable. The additional RAM found in the Slide could be the reason for the performance boost.
Overall impressions: Our source claims they were extremely satisfied with the Slide (and they came from the G1). The phone is slimmer than the G1 which is nice for those considering an upgrade. The performance of the Sense UI was great and no lag was experienced on the home screen. The battery life is typical of any Android phone and got them through the day.
I like it! Except... I'm so used to touch screen. I don't want the keyboard lol. I'm sure those who love their g1 might like this though

Used to the touchscreen? I hate it man. It works great when I am not using it but when I need to use it, it decides to break and lag like hell. I'm waiting for a cool keyboard android phone.
i have seen the leaked photos and with the specs..sounds like a decent phone...still not a nexus but i would use it....if i hadnt
gotten the MT3G.

Its the perfect replacement for now from the G1 even though the processor isn't the most impressive piece of hardware by any means. Should suffice for now.

I work for T-Mobile and am supposed to be getting one of these soon as part of a MyTouch Champion promotion. I was also a a meeting this evening a rep had already received his, and from everything I see, it flat out flies! I know the processor isnt much of an increase, but HTC has done something right because the multitouch seemed really responsive and the new Sense looks clean. I was also told at the meeting that the processor is actually 700 MHz, not 600, so take it for what it’s worth, but I’ll be more than happy to post again once I receive mine.
I've already sold my MT3G to cover some bills and I'm gonna replace it with this next month. May 17th needs to hurry up and I hope the date sticks!

I disagree. It's out of date from day 1 for power users. I couldn't commit myself to an 18 month contract for this. Really need a high end phone with QWERTY.

Being a power user myself, I disagree with your first statement. Even my Mytouch 1.2 with it's 528 MHZ processor runs applications well. I mean, a 1 GHZ Snapdragon would be nice, but just because it doesn't have the highest end specs doesn't mean it's already outdated. Besides, if you can't live with that for 18 months, switch to Even More Plus and buy it off contract, or just don't buy it at all.
I might buy the Mytouch Slide, if it can become rooted and not be a PITA like the Mytouch 1.2.
I have the MyTouch Slide...can't wait for someone to root it because lack of apps2sd is my only complaint.

speed also lays in the os/partitioning.
bloatware or a bad os will slow down even the scorpion 1.2ghz..also idk about the cell cpu but speed also comes from the fbs & clock on the ram. htc may have done some nice programig to speed it up.

I don't even have an Nexus One and I don't think that's a good idea. I've seen the specs and I'm not that impressed.
No. Its all about personal preference, and I personally love my N1.

It's good but I mean the N1 has all that besides maybe the front camera and a 3.7" display instead of 3.8" display. But like he said...it's all preference
Don't forget the newest Snapdragon and GPU and the 768MB memory and 4GB of ROM.
I love my N1, but this is pretty solid. Though I'm clinging on to my N1 until the Gingerbread update to see what it's all about. Then, as soon as the source code is released, I'll sell the N1 at an all time high on eBay to the desperate souls wanting a taste of Gingerbread.
Then hopefully use the money to help buy a MT4G outright and wait a few weeks for CM's Gingerbread since the source would have been released.
This is all contingent on the assumption that the MT4g doesn't have the rooting issues that is plaguing the G2, DHD, etc..
Edit: Also don't forget about the very fast HSPA+ (the reason we're even calling it the -4G)

The ONLY reason I'd switch is to get a 4.3" screen or 3.7-4.2" screen with a higher resolution (a la the retina display), and of course faster processor/GPU.
It bothers me that every carrier in the US has a 4.0 or 4.3" (native-)Android phone except for T-Mobile. (HD2 is not native Android.)
Not worth it...do yourself a favor and keep the N1 for now (till the new year when a lot of new devices hit the market).

Really? I like my N1 but wouldn't mind having a better processor, better touch sensor, more responsive screen, better antenna, more RAM and a front facing camera.
I don't think people are doing their research, I love my N1 but I had this bad boy since January. The myTouch 4g is not the same with just a ffc and a 3.8" screen, It's BETTER!
I don't know I had my nexus since launch haven't seen anything yet to come close

I'd wait. There's bound to be a more powerful Android phone released for the holidays. Maybe a stock 1.5GHz device. Try to wait until Dec. That's what I'm doing even though I'm ready to throw this G1 in front of a moving car.
I am thinking I will get the MT4G. My N1 has terrible reception at work while my coworkers with tmo have better signals. My screen locks up and I have to remove the battery at least once a day. I am out of space on my phone. I don't have many apps but I am out of space.
The phone will be rooted before long and there will be a custom ROM so I am not too worried about the custom interface.
I'm growing so bored of my N1. I want to want every new phone that comes out, but there's always ONE thing about a device that comes out that is just retarded and breaks the deal. Evo 4G; no GSM, SGS phones; bad GPS and no stock, G2; No permanent root or custom ROMS, same with the Desire HD and apparently this phone. It's getting pretty depressing.
I even wanted to go w the new WP7 phones, but the OS is useless to me with no voice or multitasking or C&P. Even though I think it looks great and has potential I'll have to wait til V2.0.
I really want a WebOS experience, but there is nothing compelling about the current hardware.
Long story short, this year is bull****. If you got a smartphone in 2010, just keep it because every phone is basically the same or you'd be giving one thing up for another. I suggest waiting til the new year after CES with better phones with better screens, gpu's and OS's and hardware. No compromises.
I've been thinking about this too. Really there is nothing about the phone making it much better than my N1. Wifi calling would be nice since my signal at home sucks but otherwise there isn't much more it offers over my N1.
Sure it has more internal memory but I've been using a2ext since my G1 so no issues with running out of memory or apps. Cell reception on my G1 was MUCH better and as annoying at it is when my N1 can't hold a signal nearly as well it's not a reason to jump ship to a comparable phone hardware wise and no guarantee of better signal strength.
I have the MIUI ROM which is quite simply blazing fast, no other ROM has even come close to speed.
Once a phone with a larger and better screen with more internal space and a much better processor comes out I will dump my N1.

It IS a better processor than our Nexus Ones! Why does everyone assume that just because it's clocked the same, it's the same processor? This is a second generation Snapdragon on a 45nm architecture with an Adreno 205 GPU. The processor SMOKES ours.
That being said, I'm holding out till January... I want to see what, if anything, happens with the rumored new developer phone.

The ONLY reason I'd switch is to get a 4.3" screen or 3.7-4.2" screen with a higher resolution (a la the retina display), and of course faster processor/GPU.
It bothers me that every carrier in the US has a 4.0 or 4.3" (native-)Android phone except for T-Mobile. (HD2 is not native Android.)

It seems to me that you have to pay extra to tether and use your phone as a wifi hotspot. With the n1, you can do it for free for now I am staying with my n1.
I had to pick one up. Im going to hang on to my n1. so far I think its awesome. at work I have absolutely no signal so the wifi calling is a plus. aswell as being able to video chat with yahoo messenger.

I tried the Atrix and HTC Inspire in-store, and while I absolutely want an upgrade, I'm not convinced either is good enough, and am looking beyond to the next wave of Android phones on AT&T, unless nothing better is coming anytime soon.
I am subject to an odd process where I put in for an upgrade now and will get approval in four months, at which point I get to choose a new phone, which means I merely need to know that a phone I want will be available four months from now. If a good phone is coming in 5 or 6 months, it makes sense to wait, otherwise, I can put in now and see, four months from now, if the Atrix's bootloader has been smashed to hell and good custom ROMs are available, and if not, get an Inspire.
So, what good-looking Android phone are here or on the way. Here's what I've been able to determine, with pros and cons:

Looking at all that, I'm thinking that the best bet is that the only true Atrix competitor is the S2, and assume that it will come out mide July, like the Captivate. I can put in for an upgrade in late March, which should give the S2 enough time to come to market and be reviewed, plus the Atrix to hopefully get some ROMs, and make the call.
Are there any other phones worth looking forward to? Is there any other reason to choose the Inspire or Infuse, or to not put my chips on the Atrix or Infuse?
There is always going to be a group of new phones coming out soon. I'd say just pick the one you like the most at the time. If something else you can't live without comes out in a few months (and it will) just sell the phone you bought to cover most of the out of contract price of your next one.
I returned my Inspire to get the Atrix so that's where I stand there.
I would never buy another Samsung Android device unless the show a commitment to upgrading. They tend to just want you to buy the next phone instead.
LG Optimus looks nice, but I hate LG phones so I'd stay away. Generally poor build quality and software.

I'm typing this on my inspire. Saying that, I love it a lot. It is my first android, and in my opinion probably the best way to enter it.
My only complaint is the battery. Even being small, it does power management well and lasts longer than my dads iphone 3gs. (maybe some debate if that's froyo I guess)
With rooting/roms, I'm sure I could make the battery last longer by removing bloat ware and stuff.
the way I see it, phones are out matched months after they come out. Better phones will be developed even after phones are announced. That's what competition does to technology. So why torture yourself thinking about what MAY come out, when months later better suff will be out.

Perhaps. I guess what I'm really asking is that, now that the Atrix is available and people have tried it out, do they still want the Atrix, or is it worth waiting just a couple more months?

Absolutely. I think that what it comes down to is:
The Atrix got us all very excited, but the excitement is fading under a number of negatives:
1 - terrible pricing on the dock and tethering policy
2 - Motorola's pointless signing of the bootloader, which only removes value from the device
3 - the laptop dock has a lot of dissapointments (touchpad, speed)
On the other hand, the Atrix is still an incredible phone, and it goes us excited for some great reasons:
1 - killer processor
2 - huge battery
3 - unique features (docks, fingerprint reader)
4 - somewhat rare features (front facing camera, lots of internal [non-MicroSD] storage, HDMI out)
What makes it tough is the Galaxy S2, which doesn't have the unique features, but has everything else the Atrix has and more
Vs. Atrix:
Atrix negatives:
2 - Samsung's are easier to load custom ROMs on
Atrix positives:
1 - Also has a killer processor, one that, when tested, could even beat the Atrix
2 - Larger than average battery
4 - better rare features (better front facing camera, more internal storage
And its own positives:
1 - better camera
2 - Super AMOLED plus screen (amazing bright colors, lower power usage)
3 - bigger screen
4 - Gyroscope
5 - 1080p video
And just one known negative:
1 - Lower resolution screen
So, what this thread should really be is:
Do you still want the Atrix, or do you plan on waiting just 5 months for the Galaxy S2?
My upgrade date is in three days, I'm hoping that they'll crack the bootloader issue for the atrix pretty soon, I will not buy the phone without it.
The only real con I see for the Atrix is the lack of an LTE radio on it, if you get one you'll be stuck with it for the next two years ( unless you want to pay full price ) and LTE should be up and running ( in some areas ) in that time frame.
Even though I've been an ATT customer for 8 years I hold no loyalty to them, I'm waiting for more info to come on the HTC " pyramid " and could switch to T-Mobile if that phone has a bigger battery than the pathetic things that HTC puts in them now. We all know HTC seems to be the devs favorite brand and CM would positively fly on a dual core phone.
After owning a Craptivate I wont even consider another Samsung phone. I don't care how impressive the specs are Samsung will find a way to screw it up. If you don't like the Atrix then just wait a few months for the next great HTC phone. The Inspire is nice, but it' s just a lightly upgraded Evo and cant compete with the Atrix.

I love HTC, and really wanted my next phone to be an HTC. But I feel like I can't rely on them to bring good hardware to AT&T. My current phone is their Rhodium, and since then I've seen:
Droid Incredible - Looks great, not on AT&T
Desire Z - Great keyboard, not on AT&T
Evo - Kinda special at the time, but not on AT&T
7 Pro - Amazing keyboard, probably never coming to AT&T
Aria - Wonderful phone, my wife loves it, but not for power users
I felt like HTC all of a sudden decided it hated AT&T. Now we've got two new ones:
Inspire - updated Evo, decent but old hat, doesn't stand up to the other phones released at the time
Thunderbolt - slightly better than the Inspire, not coming to AT&T
I hope HTC comes up with something special by summer, but I'm not holding my breath. I am on my fourth consecutive HTC phone, and right now, it looks like my last.
