It seems like Cyanogen is going to remain fairly minimalistic. The long term support of the EVO 4G seems to have a long life expectancy.
I know there are slight hardware improvements with the EVO 3D. But CM7 runs like a champ on the EVO 4G. I really don't see too much of a speed increase with the EVO 3D with Cyanogen's ROM's. Plus there are allot of uncertainty with the boot loader and the bugs that will be associated with the new hardware.
I can see the reason to upgrade for sense 3.0 (even though we already got a port). But I see no significant reason to get he EVO 3D for CM7.
So my question is "are you as a Cyanogen user going to purchase the EVO 3D?"

you say slight hardware improvements...and you say you really dont see the speed increase with the 3d...but you realize its pretty much twice the phone right? dual core? twice the ram? twice the internal memory? and there is no question the bootloader is unlocked and set to s-off.
either way the 3d will be much faster no matter what rom your running. but my personal opinion...i'm in no hurry to change phones. i'll wait till i can get an upgrade then decide what i want to do. evo is plenty fast, but my needs will change i'm sure...
cheers!

slight improvement... lol. yeah, i'm getting the evo 3d, not for the 3d so much, more for the firepower of the thing. it is leaps and bounds beyond the evo4g.
i think with the evo4g a lot of people got cyanogen to make it run faster and smoother but with the evo3d the hardware will carry sense 3.0 like a champ. but then again there are those who like the plain AOSP ..
sent from Jebus's butt!
Okay "slight improvement" might be an understatement but I think the question still remains the same. Is there enough improvement to warrant a CM user speed increase?
I am really on the fence with this phone. I could call Sprint and get an update override and buy this phone. I just don't want to waste it if there is a phone (i.e. nexus 3) that will blow the socks off the EVO 3D coming in the next year. I know no one has a crystal ball but I just don't know if there is enough there in the EVO 3D.
Like I said in the OP if I was a Sense user this would be a no brainier for me at least.

Adreno 220 over Adreno 200 alone is a large improvement.
However, I am not getting one yet. Im still happy with my EVO performance, so as long as that is the case, I might as well wait for "the next big thing".

So do you think there are some CM users that will revert back to Sense 3.0 if they get the EVO 3D?
I can see that. The Kingdom port is awesome. I just really like AOSP. I have been tempted though. I guess that is part of the dilemma.
I have one on pre-order. I am a gold premier so I can get it for pretty cheap. My Evo screen is all jacked up due to the coating on it coming off where the swype keyboard is and I was basically going to have to pay to get that fixed vs. trading the phone in for $150.
Dual core, better GPU, more memory, better battery(supposedly), etc...
I have really loved my Evo running CM7 and will possibly put in on the EVO3d as soon as it comes out for it(Toast said he was going to keep it updated for the EVO3d) as long as we dont lose to many of the 3d features.
I think it's to soon to know about the real performance improvements because I dont think many of the benchmark apps have been re-written for the new hardware yet.
What about the Charging port being on the side of the phone?
Also the lack of kickstand?
And does the phone sit on the camera lens?
Thought about it, but thinking long term, I'm wondering if Sprint is going to ride the WiMax horse into the sunset. They already have made noises about LTE a possibility and 'just a throw of a switch' away.
I'm very happy with my EVO with CM7 and Tiamet. I think the real push to upgrade will come when Sprint introduces a phone that will do both WiMax AND LTE. I think they will do this if they start to roll out LTE in some areas and still have WiMax in legacy areas. I think that will be a killer phone. I'm not gazing into a crystal ball here, and I don't profess to know what Sprint is going to do with Clear, but until my EVO becomes a real dog with new apps, I see myself keeping it a long while.
Looking in the crystal ball. A phone without buttons would be awesome and one that does LTE with Wimax will be great as well.
it is good to have options but hard to choose when the options are avalible.
i'll definitely be getting the 3d. it is twice the phone the evo 4g is.
Still loving my evo 4g, a faster phone isn't needed for me anyway...But if I wanted a faster phone like da 3d if I would wait till cm7 is on it...Been off sense for so long and really don't miss it lol...Just now I had a friend show me his new HTC incredible 2 and I told him gps is on and for the life of me I couldn't remember where the menu u have to go to turn it off lol

Come on, do the math! Adreno 220 is only %10 better than the Adreno 200.
It sounds to me like the 3D would be a valuable upgrade if you are running/wanting Sense 3.0.
I think that for an AOSP user it is an option but not a major upgrade as AOSP ROMs are very lightweight and fast on the 4G.
It would be nice to see a benchmark for CM7 between the two phones.
I think that the conclusion would be that Sense needs the better hardware where as the AOSP user would see little improvement.
p.s. I am not saying that the 3D is not the better/faster phone. But for AOSP it is probably overkill.
I am pre-ordering my 3D and it is my hope we can load a downclocked ROM on there to get super long battery life. If there is no significant improvement in battery, then I might just make the switch back from CM over to Sense.
I already have my 3D pre-ordered at Radio Shack. I love my 4G but I need a new toy. CM will be great on the 3D and I'm excited to see what the developers will be able to do with all that power. I will miss my 4G, by far the best phone I've ever owned. Probably the best device I've ever owned.

Okay so here is my idea I am due for an upgrade february first so I was thinking maybe I would get the evo just to see what it's like an see you all the hype is about... and if it doesn't live up to my expectations I will just do the sprint 30 day trading thing and end up with an evo shift. I will be able to side by side both devices since my wife just got the shift on the seventh.
good idea?
sent from my gameboy.
my pre was ready to go and i got the evo because it's what was out at the time. got sick of the virtual keyboard, hated it on my iphone and i think i'll always hate virtual keyboards.
the shift is faster with a great keyboard and much better battery life. and $50 cheaper. that's enough for me.
I will probably end up coming back to the shift but I just want to try out a new you gonna have it for a little while to see if it will suit my needs cuz I don't really need the hard keyboard. and also I have rom add so I wanna try out the 50,000,000,000 there are ready for the evo...

I am looking to upgrade soon from my Hero and am contemplating the same thing, EVO OG or the Shift. I have seen a few comments about the shift being faster, is that just a placebo because it is new? I thought the OG EVO had a faster clock sped than the new shift (why it gets better battery life).
I have both an Evo and Shift. Stock, the Shift in benchmarks, even with being an 800Mhz cpu, benches quite a bit faster across the board.
Cam seems better on the Shift, esp. anyplace indoors where you need flash. Tho the megapixel rating is only 5.1. More doesn't always mean better.
Evo does have a significantly bigger screen which is good, esp for me. I don't HAVE to wear my reading glasses. Evo has the front cam and a kickstand, and of course, the worthless HDMI port. I've never used the front cam, not once. I really don't WANT to see the folks I chat with. LOL
The reason I added the shift to "probably" replace the evo is the keyboard. I type A LOT. Messages, notes, IM's, data from conf calls, etc and it does get extremely annoying to do it with only a soft keyboard.
Sense, for the folks that like it, has landscape capability on the Shift, not so on the Evo.
Phone wise, both are superb. No odd bluetooth dropouts, I was on the phone for exactly 4 hours and 52 minutes today at work, no issues. Clarity is awesome.
Battery life so far, has been better on the shift than evo. Both seem to get the same amt of signal on both 3g and 4G in my house. Data speed tests with 3g, 4g and wifi are very close to identical. GPS seems about the same, nothing odd there.
Right now, the Evo is nand unlockable and fully rootable, the Shift probably will be and is expected, but this may matter to some folks.
The screen on the evo is flush and has been known to "peel" in the corners. Shift is recessed about 1mm, which will probably eliminate the peeling effect that bothers some folks.
The usb/charge port on the evo is on the bottom, which make it easier to hold and use while charging/syncing, but probably makes it more prone to snapping the pins. The shift is on the side, probably stop the damage occurring, but does make it more awkward to hold/use while charging.
Back cover on the evo was quite easy to remove/swap batteries, whereas the shift, attaches really well to where you think you're going to break the clips.
As you see, both have their pro's and cons. All depends on what you're looking for in a smartphone.
In the end, it'll probably be the keyboard over the screensize that will make my decision.
I currently have a HTC Hero Nand rooted, with custom Sense rom and kernal. When you use roms and kernals on your Evo how does it do? Obviously nothing has been made yet for the Shift for comparison yet though. Just curious about your experiences.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxI8vG6wT8g&feature=youtube_gdata_player somewhere in the middle of that video is a quadrant test with both of the phones their stock conditions. With rooting in overclocking the shift just goes even farther ahead. I've heard of G2. (which is basically the same phone is the shift) overclocked 2 1800 and a quadrant score of over 3000, so no question the shift is and will be faster. it's just a question of whether or not there will be as much of a development following IMO.

That is promising, just gotta figure out if I am going to miss not having the front camera that I have wanted for using Skype with clients for work when needed. Also Screen size.
Rom community is important to me as the Hero has a very strong development and theme community, no way to know if that will come to the shift yet though.

I dunno what to say. When I went in to the sprint store to get a case for the shift, I saw they had the extended battery (unknown rating) for the regular evo. That takes care of a major problem with the old evo. Depends on what's important to you. I've had all three 4g phones. The big screen is definitely a plus for bad eyesight and watching movies. If I had to get another phone, the original evo with the extended battery is tempting. The epic was slightly quicker with games since it had a gpu and the evo was plowing through it with just a single cpu. I'm so disgruntled with samsung, I would probably go for the more screen real estate. Good luck finding a case for it with the fat battery. It certainly makes the evo have some junk in the trunk!
Haa haa! My evo has a ghetto booty! LMAO
With the Hero being 18mos old I think a lot of people are coming up on their 1 year and looking for their next phone. Similar to how a lot of initial EVO adopters were early Hero adopters, we are the crowd who got the Hero 6 months late.
The Skype video chat just went live last week on Iphone4 so I assume it will be not too long for it to be on Android, that is what happened with Skype Voice chat as well. (Although Verizon had that by itself the apk from Verizon was able to be run on other phones, it is what I use on my Hero now)
From a battery perspective, I thought the Hero battery was compatible with the Evo, and along with ROM/Kernal tweaks the Evo battery wasn't horrible. Add in a second battery and you should be pretty good.
Now it would be even better with the shift, just not sure if I want to wait the 2 months for the modding community to pick it up in full stride if it ever does.
I need to get both in my hand to compare them soon and play with them. I really want 2.2 Sense which wasn't able to be achieved on the Hero. Unlike others I really like Sense for it's integration and I don't feel it slows the system down. Nfinites Roms on the Hero with sense worked great with a Zen Kernal.
I am on my 4th Epic. The manager at my local sprint store told me that he would either swap my Epic out for an Evo or an EVO Shift and would let me keep my 16 gig memory card to make up the price difference that I paid.
I have been leaning towards the shift, just because it is a newer device.
Coming from the Epic, my main concern is battery life. I can live without the FFC on the Epic and Evo so that is not really a concern.
My one huge concern with either phone, is that I have never liked the HTC Sense Experience. I had previously owned a Hero for almost a month and an EVO previously for a week.
I am familiar with rooting / and running custom roms now as well.
Which leads into my questioning onto how big the dev community is on the shift.
I have ran pretty much every ROM for my epic, and have loved a few.
I am probably just rambling on here. I just am tired of waiting for an official release for 2.2 for the Epic which doesnt get pulled 2 days later and as well the epic has a million quirks that I dont like.
Like the default camera app not rotating the viewfinder. Or the battery constantly dying due to the screen, even when it is on lowest brightness. To its spotty GPS performance, and rotation lag that keeps coming back.
I am thinking I would rather have the shift, due to the good things I have heard about the battery life on it thanks to the newer processor but I dont know.
Any advice?
i say u definatly should get the shift. it can alread be overclocked to 1.8 and curently mine is overclocked to 1.3 ghz and i can easily go through a whole day with moderate usage. i dont have a rom yet, cuz i havent seen one that i like. but im sure plenty of roms are coming for this device. and ur concern about battery life, this phone has excellent battery life compared to the evo(my bro has an evo) and also if u dont like sense i saw some roms with it removed. so i say get it! and also the keyboard is great. very easy to get use to
Mine has been off the charger since 5AM. It's now 10PM and I have 50% battery with moderate text messaging and WiFi internet use.
Yeah, battery life is amazing on this thing.
The evo shift has better battery life from a stock battery than the evo. The evo with the sprint extended life battery has better life than epic and shift. I think shift has slightly bettery battery life than epic. The shift charges faster than the epic. You can use the shift while charging it and it will charge the battery. On the other hand, it seems like the epic will only charge if it's off or sleeping. Opinion wise, almost everything has been said now and in different posts with similar subjects.
If you don't like sense, it's so easy to use something else like adw or launcher pro.
My experience with the Epic was similar to yours. I had enough of Samsung and convinced them to swap me to an Evo Shift. Sure, it's smaller and has a slower processor but you won't miss it. This thing is polished and rock solid. Night and day from the nightmare that was Samsung.

My upgrade comes through on March 1st.. I've looked into each of these phones with great detail. This is what I've come up with in a nutshell. And I want everyone's professional opinion as ill be using this phone for a year or two.. thx guys and gals..(is there a girl on xda yet? ;p)
Stock pros of shift: pocket friendly, higher quality exterior, possibly more support on xda, I heart HTC.
Stock pros of epic 4g: better battery life, amoled screen, front facing camera, video card for twice the gaming potential
Both are 99.00 on Amazon with upgrade eligibility (so is the evo, but I don't need a tablet just yet, 4" is quite enough for me) .. I use sprint im not switching its cheap.. I'd rather have a steak then slightly improved cell service. I have wifi at home anyways..

My wife has a shift and I have an Epic. Her phone is more stable and her camera takes noticeably better pictures. The keyboard is also better on the shift as sometimes the keys skip on the Epic. As far as froyo is concerned it is much more stable on the Shift as well.
When on the shift section of xda I noticed a lot of people got the phone for their wives and not for themselves. They say games don't run as smoothe on the shift such as psx rom.games. and there is no phone on the market that I've layed my hands on that has a prettier screen than the epic. The colors are just plain and simply better. The phone isn't the eye catcher the epic is
I would go personally with the Epic in hopes of sprint and Samsung getting their act together and fixing the numerous bugs that are associated with it. You'll definetely have a love hate relationship with the epic but I believe in the long run you'll be better off with it.

If you can wait for the next round of phones I would, since they'll probably be out this summer. If you can't, the Epic is a good phone. I'm currently on EB 13 and I did a fresh install and then loaded all of my apps manually. There's still problems with the sport mode in the camera, Time without signal (TWS) being high unless you do the airplane mode toggle, and the camcorder being a little sluggish in low light. These aren't deal breakers for me, because I don't really use the phone for low light recordings or sport mode and I'm fine toggling the airplane mode. However, it would be nice to have this fixed. I haven't experienced any of the other bugs people have claimed, so I'm still very happy with the performance of EB 13, but I'm not holding my breath for a fix. I mainly stay on EB 13 because the battery life for me is drastically better than 2.1 and the performance is no worst than 2.1. The screen is a lot better as well.
Like I said before, I hope they fix the problems, but I wouldn't buy a phone assuming they will......
IMO, it all boils down to this..
If you want a KB, get the Epic, if you don't get the EVO
The EVO shift is simply not a high end phone, no matter how it was marketed.
It is not a matter of speed, but just a lack of to many high end features.
I would really say it boils down to you really wanting to mod it I have an epic and I've been pretty happy with having it rommed to froyo until. Although some of the hardware glitches or software do kinda get annoying. I still think it's pretty descent.
The shift I'm assuming is a descent phone as well and I heard the keyboard is way better then epic, so it really comes down to preference I really think.
Best advice I can say is go to the sprint store and play with both of them for about 30 minutes, like literally 30 minutes.
I own both. Epic has a nicer screen and is faster for games. Shift seems to be better for literally everything else.
But if you like to tweak endlessly, Epic may be more your speed.
Epic by a gazillian times. The screen is simply amazing! And the gpu screams. Along froyo with ext filesystem, it even beats the super dual core tegra Atrix phone. Trust me... Epic is hands down best. I owned a Evo and a shift. Both underperform compared to Epic.
Thanks a lot guys after reading I think I may just wait for next row of phones.. when do you think they'll come out?

The shift is something I would recommend to my grandma. though i wouldn't recommend a android phone to any tech impaired person( as my grandma is, fuuuu dont even get me started.)
From what it seems, the Shift is a less expensive/toned-down alternative to the Epic and Evo. So you're more or less comparing two differently classed phones.
Also, I love the keyboard on the epic. It's very roomy and comfortable, especially with its five rows. Plus, the Super AMOLED screen is gorgeous and a serious selling point. And regarding support on XDA, the Epic has nearly 10 times more threads and posts in each sub-forum.
I've never actually owned a Shift, but just from the numbers it seems the Epic is a much better deal, especially since they are the same price on Amazon. But waiting for Sprint's next lineup of Android phones seems like a good choice as well.

Heavy
I've had the Epic and the Evo, not the Shift tho. But I've played with the Shift for a while and one thing that surprises me is HOW HEAVY it is! For the weight difference, I'd almost just get the Epic. Regardless... if you want a billion ROM's that's hard to decipher and just really be confused most of the time, get an HTC. Tho, I will say their stock ROM's hand Samy's rear to them. The build quality on all three phones I would say are on par with each other.
The GPS on the Evo is AMAZING! I ALWAYS get a quick lock (within 5-10 seconds of opening up maps), and after 15-20 seconds, it's accurate to 3m (9 feet!), the Epic, not so much. After about 30 seconds, it'd lock, and only be accurate to 20m (60 feet!?!). As for using navigation on the phone, again, I would buy a garmin or tom-tom before I'd use the Epic's navigation.
Bottom line, yeah, if you need a phone that just works, any HTC is the way to go. BUT, the screen, size of keyboard, how good it plays games, did I mention the screen quality? are unmatched on the Epic. Hardware-wise (beyond maybe the GPS), the Epic is unbeaten.

Shift out performs evo.. epic has it beat on the graphics end. at least according to benchmark apps. I think I'm going to go with the shift for now... ill just add another line late this summer to try and get another phone..

Untrue. Stop using Quadrant and Linpack (outdated benchmarks that are optimized for Snapdragon) and you'll see that it is simply not the case.
MHz for MHz, the Qualcomm MSM SoCs are slightly more powerful than the Hummingbird, but at 800 MHz they still fall behind the 1 GHz S5PC110.
I was using smartbench what do u think of that one?

I got the shift by the way... and I'm am loving it. Superior device imo.

Shift is good, but the epic is on a whole other level, in terms of hardware. Stock the shift has the better software, but if your going to mod your phone with some of the awesome xda dev software.......that's where you'll see what I mean by being on a whole other level. Don't wait to long to trade your new shift in and get a real upgrade
Just wondering... I may have an opportunity to upgrade to a new phone early as another phone on my account is due for upgrade. That family member may just want an EVO, in which case I figure, they could take mine and I could take the upgrade.
The question is... Do I really want to move from the EVO 4G to the Galaxy S 4G?
Side by side, the EVO does look like the better phone given it has a microSD card slot and better camera. The S 4G has a better (though smaller) screen. I could care less about it being curved. I understand the S 4G does not have notification LEDs?
I have a 16GB card in my EVO, but I don't keep music/movies on it.
I'm also currently running CyanogenMod 7 Nightlies on the EVO, so I am not attached to Sense.
If anyone can give their thoughts, that'd be great!
[BTW, if you see this on other sites, I apologize, but I am looking for as many opinions as possible.]
well the evo does have a higher megapixel camera but the nexus s takes way better pictures. Side by side the nexus s is beats out the evo in every part except for size.
The gpu on the nexus s out performs that the adreno one found n the evo. CPU is miles more efficant than the one in the evo.
The only thing I miss every now and then from the evo is the kickstand.
yes no notification led is confusing why its not there. But while rooted and running cm7+net kernel I use BLN and it lights up the buttons for notification
Battery life is great when compared to teh evo, no matter what rom or kernel (other than sbc with extended battery) the evo would drain like a sive
the 16 gb (more like 12gb ) is fine for me, i do keep music on here but not much I still use a mp3 player
so if you have no hold ups about not having a micro sd card the nexus s is batter than the evo
Side note you may just want to wait for the evo 3d if having high megapixels and check box feartures is what your looking for
Thanks for the input.
I almost never use the kickstand. Or at least I can do without it.
I may actually see if I can hold out for the EVO 3D. Looks pretty killer to me even though I could care less for the 3D side of things. Dual core would definitely be nice.
Then again, having a pure Google phone is also nice. I like HTC build quality, but I would rather an ASOP build or something close. I imagine it will be a while before the EVO 3D has Cyanogenmod or other clean ROMs available.

I upgraded from the Evo to the Nexus. I'm rather happy with it.
The Nexus looks better and feels better in the hand. The OS is faster and smoother, it has tons more room on the data partition.
You might want to hold out and check out the Evo 3D though. It's got a dual-core CPU and double the RAM of the Nexus S.
Yes, I was thinking about that. I just don't really care about 3D and hope that the 3D doesn't pose problems when it comes to custom ROMs.
I do like the idea of pure Google, but I root and flash, so who am I kidding?

The experience of the stock ROM on the Nexus S is far superior to that of CM7 on the Evo.
I upgraded to a Nexus S 4G from the Evo, and I've been pretty happy with it so far. The feel of the OS and the Pure-Google experience are really hitting home with me. And it does feel smoother using it overall (screen transitions and animations and such). So far the battery life is a definite seller. I had 3 separate batteries with my Evo, I usually went through 2 a day. On my Nexus, I can go through a whole day on a single charge with about 63% left over when I get home on a light usage day. 20% +/-5% on a heavy usage day...and on some days I leave the 4G on for extended periods of time.
The only thing I find myself missing from the Evo is the kick-stand. I loved that thing and use to use it all the time. It was the main reason I put off buying a nexus twice before I finally sprung for it. But all in all, I love the nexus. Like the two above said, you may want to hold off for the Evo 3D...though besides the dual core processor, I don't see anything too awesome about it.
The Nexus is tempting (as was Nexus S). But I'm going to stick with my good old Evo 4G. When it came out, it was the 1st superphone and so far ahead of its time that its still not outdated. My phone does everything I need and ICS will breathe new life into it. I don't think any of the new dual core phones are that much better.
My next upgrade will be to a 28mm SoC with integrated LTE that finally gives decent battery life on 4G.
I'm with you, but i do find it very hard not to get sucked into all of the constant hype around here. It is also tough when the devs you like start moving and you feel like you should follow with them. The EVO is still a great phone

Not outdated? Are you joking?
*Weak, single core processor. Dual core procs perform better. Period.
*Terrible, god awful graphics processor. Can't play any decent 3D games properly.
*Weak camera
*Terrible battery
*Average/Below average screen. Blacks aren't really black, resolution is low.
The Evo was(is?) a nice phone, but saying that it isn't outdated is a straight-up lie.
I was just thinking the same thing...the evo has been the one phone that I haven't gotten bored with even though I've had it since July of last year It was much more fun on Sprint but even on Metro (to save money) it's still a great device.

It's still better then what 90% of people out there have, quit being melodramatic.

I moved on to the Epic Touch only because I cracked the screen to a million pieces. EVO is an excellent phone and I miss the ROMs but this epic is an amazing phone. We have development going on and it's getting there but I honestly feel like there's a black hole without my EVO haha idk. And don't get sucked into that LOS problem. If your not stupid, you'll figure it out.

I keep going and checking out the new phones and honestly, I have not found another phone to WOW me just yet. I have had mine since almost release day and with MikG ROMs, it runs great for everything I want to do. The dual 1.2 might be faster but not that much faster for what I use it for. I can email, text and watch Netflix on it. Ohe yeah, i make calls too! What should a smart phone do?
I will look at the real HTC EVO2 when it comes out but until them, I will keep my EVO!
I use my Evo every day despite having numerous more advanced devices. Mostly as a hotspot. But after using lots of dual core devices, man....you're clueless if you really think the dual cores aren't a massive upgrade. Evo was a bomb phone at the time, but at the rate tech advances....using my Evo the same day as my G2x or EpicTouch is painful. Every single interaction is slow as hell.
But it definitely holds a place in my heart and is definitely my overall fav of the phones I've own(ed).
Without the Evo, we wouldn't have the 4"+ size as the minimum standard for smartphones, 4G and so much else which is now common. Also it is one of the best supported phones in the dev community, and will be for a while. I can't wait to see what ICS will look like on it.
There is a night and day difference between a stock Evo and a rooted one with a nice Aosp rom like decks/Miui. I honestly don't feel like its slow and I use it for a ton of stuff, except 3d games.
For 99% of people, its more phone than they need, even today. That is not outdated. Not everyone wants to buy the top of the line greatest device, right?
Question for people who moved on - did you notice better reception, gps, or battery life? Besides performance, that's what matters most.
Even though part of me really wants a new phone, for most things, I am satisfied with the EVO.
Part of me kind of wants to wait for mid next year in order to really appreciate the upgrade from my EVO to what will likely be a quad-core beast......imagine the jump in speed upgrading from a single-core to quad, heh.
The Evo is way outdated in the numbers game, but it does everything I need and has a sweet kickstand.
This was also the first and likely only smart phone to wow me. When I first got into smart phones I had my G1 and was familiar with other devices like iPhone but the Evo blew me away the first time I saw one.
My only reason to upgrade was to not lose my upgrade. I bought a phone that I know will sell for big dollars.
I sort of like it now...it's a great phone for when I don't have time to screw with android.
The Evo is far from outdated. Despite it's age, it's hardware is still more than competent.
Yes, new CPUs may have improved instruction sets and/or optimizations to take advantage of, but the Snapdragon in the Evo is still hearty enough to run Android just fine. Although the Adreno 200 GPU is not a monster in the 3D department, it still leverages more than enough for almost any application, including most games.
Ice Cream Sandwich will take advantage of hardware acceleration, which will get more from the Adreno 200 than we ever have before, and should actually make Android run faster and be less CPU-intensive than previous iterations of Android.
The EVO, although dated, is still a strong device. Sure, we all have a desire to upgrade, and if you don't want the Galaxy Nexus you're lying--but honestly, there is little real reason to upgrade. ICS is going to run like a top on the Evo, and reinvigorate most user's experiences with their devices.
The EVO was my first smartphone, and I can say im probably gonna hang onto it for a while more. It does everything I need!

Until Sprint launches the upcoming Nexus, I'm happy because of two words: Boot Manager. I have five ROMs that I flow through... Can't beat it.

When I buy a new phone, the decision is not 'is this better than my current phone?'. It's 'is this phone good enough to last the next 2 years?'.
Evo passed that test. The Nexus does not. esp not at the $300 price point.
Really at a conundrum though. I love the development of HTC phones. The Nexus intrigues me, but the lack of ROM development for Nexus phones (outside of Cyanogen variants and Miui) makes me wonder if I will get bored.

I would miss my EVO a lot when it comes time to upgrade. Gonna hang out as long as I can. The EVO design isn't too much of an upgrade in my opinion, the EVO 3d really catches my eye but the 3d would just be a novelty played out quickly. The photon is wierdly shaped lol and the epic touch is too thin in my opinion. Just my opinion, don't flame me but I feel like I would break it in my hands.
I'm personally gonna wait to see if HTC releases anything else exciting since I'm not due for an upgrade for another year anyways.

While the processor is only a single core, it still flies in my book. Waiting for a quad core phone... Whew.
The GPU may not be the best, but it does what I ask of it, and that's what matters. I haven't had any problems with 3D.
I'm still amazed by the fact that they put an 8 MP camera in a phone.
The battery life only sucks if you leave it completely stock and don't root it. Find the right ROM and kernel and battery life is dramatically increased.
The HVGA display is plenty of resolution for a phone. My blacks are black and my colors are bright...
I have a question for you...are you sure we're taking about the same phone? Because I'm pretty sure I'm in an EVO 4G thread.
