Dumb question but has anyone here been able to get their Wifi only xoom upgraded to 4g?
Theoretically its just the software, a sim and a modem card no?

No, there are hardware and connections missing as well. Why not just get a a 4G MiFi--I have the Clear 4G Wimax--unlimited data and hotspot for up to 8 devices. Works great here in Boston (lots of 4G towers). There's also the Verizon 4G LTE and something from Xfinity.
i traded in my launch day 3g xoom for the wifi version when sprint picked it up. did want a verizon bill when im with sprint. so picked up the novatel mifi 4g hotspot. works just great as mentioned above.

I'm not familiar with how cell data connections work. Will the new att 4g work with an x10i, using hsdpa?
HSPA is touted as 3.5g, if I am not wrong...
Usage of 4G would require an LTE-able phone, like the new HTC thunderbolt.
I'm not a pro at cellular networks too, just sharing my understanding through what I have read around the web.

4G and LTE are not the same thing. From what i've read, LTE is more like 3.9G

HSPA+ and LTE are both part of AT&t's 4G plan. You need a 4G capable phone to get either, X10 will not work.
I work in the cellular world. The understanding of 4g vs lte can be hard to grasp. Think of LTE as (long term evolution). companies like Verizon and AT&T won't have to invest much additional to the development of 4g or the expansion into what the next level will be. The LTE platform is designed to grow and stretch with the demand.

Is that is updated Gingerbread or it is just because Nexus S 4G has a different hardware then Nexus S?
http://www.bgr.com/2011/03/23/hands-on-with-sprints-nexus-s-4g/
The baseband is newer I think as is the build number?? perhaps one of our more technical members can confirm?
Interesting.....
The build seems to be newest...
GRI40 or GRI54 in 2.3.3 and this is GRI75
Probably to add wimax support, also epst settings maybe all cdma phones have that

It would make sense that the baseband and build are different. After all, the radios for Sprint, both 3g and 4g, are completely different technologies than what we have in our plain Nexus S phones.
That also begs the question: If you're not in a Sprint 4g area, or are in an area where coverage is crappy, can you use data and voice simultaneously over the 3g? This is a common CDMA problem. I'm thinking you cant. Sucks to be those guys...

No - AFAIK there's only one phone that supports simultaneous voice and data over EVDO and that's the Thunderbolt. Normally the phones drop to 1xRTT when a call is initiated (at which point data says goodbye).

On cdma 3g only no voice and data at the same time. Wifi data and calling works.

Not entirely true. All of Sprints WiMax phones do as well. EVO, Samsung Epic, etc.

No they do not..THERE IS NO SPRINT PHONE THAT SUPPORTS SIMULTANEOUS VOICE AND DATA OVER 3G EVDO. Only over wifi or 4g wimax.
For now, only VZW's Thunderbolt does voice and data over 3G EVDO in regards to CDMA.
Yep tmobiles version gets me 6mbps download and 1.5 upload anyways. Id say try in your area before you buy 2.3.4 is not a os change really

That's correct and the Thunderbolt uses SVDO not EVDO which is what allows simultaneous data and voice.

Thanks for the additional info.
I don't know if Sprint is waiting for their Network Vision/1X Advanced to be activated on a few select markets later this year, but they have pre-production phones with the SVDO chipset.
from what i heard there are some system updates and bug fixes, most important is voice chat and video chat is now available in Google talk
Video calling over Gtalk.
I just bouth my motorola xoom 3g 4g and i want to know if i can use my thunderbolts sim for my xoom i bouth my xoom from ebay????
I would doubt it, if that was all that was required I doubt the majority of us would be complaining about not having LTE Xooms.
I believe there's a chip or radio that needs to be installed on the device to allow it to utilize the LTE/4G signal.
.
Well but if my xoom has activated the 4g. I can use my thunderbolts sim to have 4g on it???
Apparently this is right out of your Thunderbolt's manual
"The 4G SIM card provided to you by Verizon Wireless contains your phone number, service details, and phonebook/message memory. It enables you to make calls and access the Internet using a 4G LTE network. While you’re abroad, you could also connect to a CDMA network. The Verizon Wireless 4G SIM card is compatible with any Verizon Wireless 4G certified device. You can move the 4G SIM card from one device to another and your wireless service will work seamlessly as long as you have a compatible device and service plan. To see which devices are compatible with the Verizon Wireless 4G SIM card, visit verizonwireless.com/certifieddevice."
So if you have a 4G enabled Xoom you should be good to go, although if you sent your Xoom back to Moto/Verizon I don't see why they wouldn't have given you the SIM anyways.

Unlimited data on my xoom would be awesome...
I might even try to ditch the t-bolt if there were a way to make vzw calls on my xoom. I would of course have to keep the t-bolt line but I could ditch my data plan on my xoom.
I asked t mobile this question they said no as xoom requires a higher banding of data and doing so wood result in a huge bill

I don't think that the Xoom enabled for LTE would even be able to use T-Mobiles HSPA network.
So if the xoom has no enable the 4g lte i can send it to motorola and they will be enable that or just verizon can?? To be upgrate need be active on verizon or no??

Well it would have to be a Verizon Xoom, as those are the only Xooms that are connected to a cellular network in the US.
Any other Xoom in the US would be a WIFI only Xoom and not have the capability to utilize the Cellular signals.
Assuming the Xoom were already upgraded by Motorola with the 4G LTE radio then it would technically work with any VZW 4G sim card.
They have not quite yet launched the upgrade program for the general public.
The only issue is whether it would activate correctly as you are trying to activate a tablet device on a voice plan and not a broadband plan.
The main issue is 4G devices reactivate and register the MEID every time you power on a device.
It would technically be against VZW T&C's as well so that could result in an issue when they see a tablet activated on a voice plan.
But yes it does work... ;-)

you can make calls using your xoom with grooveIP(search on market). it connects to your google number and makes calls over internet. so if you have unlim data, i dont see why you couldnt
EDIT: you can also receive calls too!
Well, I got my newly upgraded to 4G LTE Xoom back yesterday. I am extremely pleased with how quickly the process went and how well the Xoom runs after the upgrade. I never had a Verizon contract on my Xoom. I only used it on WiFi. I pulled the 4G LTE SIM card out of my Bionic and stuck it in my Xoom and fired it up, and it worked.
I really don't know what the implications are of doing this. I only left the card in the Xoom for about ten minutes, then put it back into my Bionic. I was thinking about going to the Verizon store and asking them about it, but I am sure that they will just tell me the same thing they told me before I got the upgrade...that there is no way it will work.
It seems that for people who were grandfathered into an unlimited data plan on their phone, this would allow them to move their unlimited plan to the Xoom.
On a side note, the phone still functions as a 3G smartphone with the 4G LTE SIM card removed. For those who live in a 3G market, pulling this card out should not make any difference because the LTE is disabled for now anyway.

Why pull out the sim? Are you going to get longer battery life with the sim out?
Will that make the XOOM only work on 4g, or will it enable 3g also even if the XOOM has never been activated?

Only 4G...for the 3G to work, the Xoom has to be activated. Still pretty cool. I have the 4G hotspot on my phone, so it really is of no consequence to me. I just figured I would let you guys know that the 4G Xoom can get on the 4G network with the SIM out of a Bionic.
Has anyone tried putting an activated Xoom sim in an LTE phone to see if that works too?
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
This is neat, and I have unlimited 4G hotspot on my Bionic, but I hope to heck Verizon doesn't decide to close this little hole, because it'd be a nice perk for those of us who fork over massive amounts for both 4G and hotspot, and are using the tablet with the hotspot anyhow, to be able to just put it right in the darn tablet.
Just curious if this can be done?
They recently put up a verizon 4g on in my city and was wondering if i can force the epic to roam into verizon 4g, kinda like the roamcontrol app.

No. Totally different technologies.
impossible because Sprint 4g currently runs off a WiMax network which works pretty much as a country wide wifi network. Verizon's runs off of a LTE 4g network, which I THINK (not sure) runs off the same type of networking as 3g...could be wrong about LTE though
You are... but no its not possible OP
