Is that is updated Gingerbread or it is just because Nexus S 4G has a different hardware then Nexus S?
http://www.bgr.com/2011/03/23/hands-on-with-sprints-nexus-s-4g/
The baseband is newer I think as is the build number?? perhaps one of our more technical members can confirm?
Interesting.....
The build seems to be newest...
GRI40 or GRI54 in 2.3.3 and this is GRI75
Probably to add wimax support, also epst settings maybe all cdma phones have that

It would make sense that the baseband and build are different. After all, the radios for Sprint, both 3g and 4g, are completely different technologies than what we have in our plain Nexus S phones.
That also begs the question: If you're not in a Sprint 4g area, or are in an area where coverage is crappy, can you use data and voice simultaneously over the 3g? This is a common CDMA problem. I'm thinking you cant. Sucks to be those guys...

No - AFAIK there's only one phone that supports simultaneous voice and data over EVDO and that's the Thunderbolt. Normally the phones drop to 1xRTT when a call is initiated (at which point data says goodbye).

No they do not..THERE IS NO SPRINT PHONE THAT SUPPORTS SIMULTANEOUS VOICE AND DATA OVER 3G EVDO. Only over wifi or 4g wimax.
For now, only VZW's Thunderbolt does voice and data over 3G EVDO in regards to CDMA.

Thanks for the additional info.
I don't know if Sprint is waiting for their Network Vision/1X Advanced to be activated on a few select markets later this year, but they have pre-production phones with the SVDO chipset.
from what i heard there are some system updates and bug fixes, most important is voice chat and video chat is now available in Google talk
Video calling over Gtalk.

Not really...AT&T and Verizon are both going FDD-LTE on the 700mhz band...Sprint will get TD-LTE on the 2.5ghz~ range....
T-Mobile is going on their own HSPA/LTE hybrid variant...
So while Verizon and AT&T phones might be interchangeable (assuming they dont lock them say via some other method)..Sprint and T-Mobile will not be part of that...

Well its not impossible for a device to support both TD-LTE and FD-LTE on a single chipset..but we would then have to buy international phones..cause knowing carriers they either won't include those bands or lock them :/

700mhz is better building penetration over 2.5ghz..BUT how TD-LTE is allows carriers to use more spectrum...right now AT&T and Verizon plan to run it in 20mhz worth of spectrum each..realistically speaking that would constrain quantity of users/amount of data...(hence the tiered data)
Sprint right now though is running wimax in 10mhz of spectrum though..and could run it in 30mhz if they please..
So realistically speaking its easier to run TD-LTE as more spectrum is available in comparison to FD-LTE running at the limited 700mhz spectrum..while 700mhz spectrum though will offer betetr building penetration/signal

So its basically the 3g story again lol sprint has the better and same constant speeds no matter the load, but the signal won't be as strong lol. I can deal with that
And buyingunlocked international phones isn't bad...my friend only uses unlocked ones and they always have extra features compared to a branded one... and all he would have to do to activate it was slide his sim card in it. Sprint's LTE will act like the current Wimax implementation because it'll be running at 2.5ghz. We all know how spotty it is, especially when indoors.
Verizon and AT&T, at 700mhz will act their current 3G service because it's very close to 800mhz. They'll probably have an easier time getting better coverage because they know the 800mhz frequency.
Personally, I'd rather be at 700mhz for LTE, at 2.5ghz, you lose to much coverage and I'm sure Verizon already has the limited bandwidth figure out. If they didn't they could be throwing billions of dollars down the tube.
I can't wait for Verizon handsets to hit the market. My Sprint contract just expired so I'm looking to jump ship.

Yes its called Tiered Data plans...not fun...
Anyway, wouldn't the first crop of Verizon LTE phones still rely on 1x for voice and 3G EVDO/LTE for data?
So basically we're going to have a scenario where a Verizon LTE phone would be something like this CDMA 2000 1x/1900mhz EVDO/700mhz LTE,
and
an ATT LTE phone might be like Quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS 1900 (HSPA?)/700mhz LTE?
My 2 cents vzw & att are double what we pay for a premium phone service on sprint and not unlimited anything also have bad coverage. They nickel & dime the crap out of you on top of it. Also wimax has voice calling capabilities not just data. Lte for some reason can only do data. So maybe some new features with voice calling with wimax.

Thunderbolt review
http://www.bgr.com/2011/03/28/htc-thunderbolt-review/
The HTC ThunderBolt is able to send and receive data and carry voice calls simultaneously. It the first of many Verizon Wireless smartphones that will be able to carry voice calls while moving data, and it can do so over Verizon’s new 4G LTE network as well as its older 3G EVDO network. I tested this capability a great deal over the past week, and it has worked flawlessly for me. Whether connected to 3G or 4G, apps and web pages on the ThunderBolt continue to hustle along while voice calls are being made. I’m not sure if this new technology plays a role in the noticeably degraded audio quality I noted above, but the functionality is there so and many users will be elated.
either i am miss understanding this part or verizon enabled something to allow voice/data over their 3g cdma network

You might need to check that boat schedule, yourself. The 3G and LTE antennas/radios are separate, just like Sprint's 3G and 4G. So, if you live on a market that Verizon has yet to light up their LTE and you'll be in the same boat.
I would hazard a guess that the reason you've not seen either Verizon or Sprint actually promote simultanious voice/data as AT&T does is that it's limited to markets where they've lit up LTE/4G.

I am moderately surprised this hasn't happened yet. Given that we have a wifi chip, an FM receiver, bluetooth, 3G, 4G...some phones have had FM transceivers as well, NFC, etc....
I am not surprised, however, because bandwidth is very limited...we're not talking back-haul, we're talking actual radio wave space....I'm dying to know what breakthrough will come along to alleviate that.
If anyone wonders why your mobile internet sucks it's oversaturation....not of the back-haul line that connects the cells to the backbone but of the very air itself as allocated. There's only so much physical space in them airs. Too may people, not enough frequencies, bands are too narrow, too many things need their own band.
It isn't a limitation. I used to do this on my Treo 755. Sprint set it up so we can't do this. CDMA Technology has a limitation that doesn't allow talking and data on the same radio. End of story. No, there isn't a way around it.

Exactly why WiMaxx 4G was established, to enable that capability.
GSM is only able to achieve this because they have HSPA for the data side if i'm not mistaken.
Sprints already in the works on switching to LTE 4G, I wonder if they can just make it a hybrid WiMaxx/LTE network and have a radio capable of using either...
So when Sprint switches to LTE, will the current 4G phones work still?
There is a newer version of the CDMA spec that allows it, but Sprint hasn't deployed it. It's unclear if they will, and it's unclear whether existing phones could be upgraded to use it if they did.
For now, it's just like it always has been on all CDMA devices...no 3G data while you're on voice.

it's not actually a limitation of cdma, it's a limitation of Verizon, and i actually believe it's an artificial limitation, likely to "protect their network and users", as they like to claim for everything....

it's not actually a limitation of cdma, it's a limitation of Verizon, and i actually believe it's an artificial limitation, likely to "protect their network and users", as they like to claim for everything....

If you read my post above yours...you'll find you are not right.

This works on my sprint sg3 and it works on the evo lte... Which one of my main reasons for upgrading to a new phone. This s due to the separation of the radios that prevented this before.

Yeah know that. But it's still working on 3g in Memphis Tn.

Again no carrier? if on ATT then it always worked.
Sorry I saw you said sprint in an earlier post.

As in, be on a phone call and browse the net at the same time? Yep....but I've been able to do that since my Atrix 2....dont remember if my x10 could.

I was just doing some WiFi tethering and I received a phone call... Noticed I was still getting emails. My first thought was that my laptop automatically reconnected to my work's wireless connection. NOPE! I verified again with an outbound call... Data works on the phone and over tether DURING the phone call. Supposedly this was going to be a feature of EVDO Rev. A, but Sprint had not initiated it yet. This is freaking fantastic. I guess our phones started using 3G for voice

Sprint enabled this under their network as part of Sprint Vision. It is basically an advanced 1X data network that allows data while on phone calls. Only the newer phones with certain frequencies support it. Doesn't force us to use 4G or Wi-Fi if we want data and phone calls together. IPhones do not support this unless you're on a GSM network which Sprint isn't. Sprint is CDMA like Verizon.

I noticed this during a call yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised. When I was reading about this earlier, I thought it would be a feature supported only by towers that had eHRPD support but this is pretty awesome in itself.

I know on Verizon this is only possible when on LTE. On 3G it's still impossible due to the nature of CDMA.

It is possible with the Thunderbolt, and Rezound on Verizon. It also works with GSIII. I was a little torn about getting this phone since I figured I would lose this functionality but was pleasantly surprised when I did a test for s & g's.
Alright so some people have been confused as to what I'm asking, telling me to use search first, which I have. My question is: is sprints voice signal carried over 1xrtt (2G) or EvDo (3G) I realize my EVO 4GLTE is capable of using voice and data at the same time, and that's not what I'm asking. Thanks!

it's not unless your on wifi or LTE actually, and i wanna say it's carried over 3g although when i send a text message it drops to 1x for a second
The EVO LTE can use 3G and voice at the same time.

hmmm, did a little research, touche sir, but it's not really that great
"SV-DO is terrible on battery life, though. It requires activating two separate Tx/Rx antenna structures as CDMA antennas. That means that only 4G LTE devices can do this, since all Sprint 4G LTE devices have EV-DO/LTE antennas. But, because of how inefficient SV-DO is, it eats a little bit over 50% more than the CDMA2000 1X/LTE radio combination would."
The HTC Thunderbolt does EVDO SMS/phonecalls somehow but I forget how.

Sprints CDMA network is, like you said split up into several parts. 1xRTT is for audio transmission and the first generation technology and EvDO which stands for "Evolution: data only" is the second. EvDO only supports data communications, therefore when you make a phone call your radio which is tuned to the 1.25 MHz spectrum changes to 1xRTT. Since your making a call you must be in 1xRTT and therefore cannot be in EvDO frequency to obtain data at the same time. With LTE/WiMax the phones contain a secondary cell radio that can communicate at the same time as the voice call is being made. The same process involves calling while connected to WiFi.
Long story short, a radio in CDMA standards can only act as a voice or a data radio at one point in time. If you have more than one radio then you can connect to different services simultaneously however at a loss to battery life.
