I use to think like that until i looked at the specs its not worth upgrade the only dual core phone i would say get is Nexus if exynos rumors are true an the support will be excellent as always with NXS phones Snapdragons suck that is why i stay away from Htc
with three great developers getting it im not worried! ecotox, dan brutal and allgamer
If I can get an epic touch 1800 mah battery (assuming it will fit vibrant) I am gonna hold on this phone for one more year. The fact is if you are not into gaming on your phone or play 1080p to your HDTV, vibrant does pretty much everything so well with a smooth voodoo enabled froyo ROM. It very well holds upto any dual core phone in day to day functionalities as a smart phone. I am even afraid going to another phone will be a downgrade in terms of screen quality and audio quality as a music player (voodoo sound + power amp + 16 GB storage)

But devs can only do so much if the hardware flat out sucks that cpu is like the vibrant at 1.9 Ghz its not worth it until a game changer comes out once quad comes out it will become standard then ill make switch but its not worth it yet all who switch are being fooled exept for evo3D owners because of 1Gb ram an S2 owners because of just about everyhing

Hercules:
1. Has a Super AMOLED+ Display, which is superior to the 1st gen SAMOLED displays (No Pen-Tile, Bettery Battery Life, etc.)
2. Dual Core Processor which can save power, and generally offers better performance - just one of it's cores is faster than ours and even back when teh Vibrant/G2 was released the Scorpion CPU was faster than the Hummingbird. The Hummingbird just had a much better GPU integrated into it.
3. HSPA+ radio
4. Double the RAM of the Vibrant, which is actually more than double when you factor in the RAM dedicated to the GPU. So more like ~110% More System/App-accessible RAM (since the GPU RAM dedicated didn't change AFAICT).
5. 10% bigger battery
6. Better Camera/Camcorder, with LED Flash
7. 2 MegaPixel Front-Facing Camera
8. Wi-Fi Direct, USB On the Go (Not Sure if in US Variants)
9. Actually a factorable level of support from the carriers and OEMs at least for another year+, especially those who stick very close to the international specs (Hercules dubious here)
It's not just about the CPU. That's actually not the first thing to bottleneck in these phones, unless you're doing something specifically to tax it heavily. GPU, RAM, and I/O for example will all bottleneck before the CPU in real-world use.

Even when Quad Core phones come out, there will be a better one 4 months later. It's the nature of the beast.
And people said the same about Dual Core processors. They'll say the same thing about 20 core processors in 5 years or whatever time it takes for them to come out, as well...
has anyone here actually USED Hercules?
No? EXACTLY.
The specs make it sound like a amazing phone.
The Vibrant sounded amazing too! It is amazing, but it did have flaws, and i'm sure other phones will follow. They may not be the SAME flaw, but they will come.
N8ter, you get my thanks just for being able to read that f'ing gibberish. That is all.
Most of improvements are minor the only thing that would make me wanna switch is the ram an flash an maybe gps only two things that make me mad about phone but i wouldnt say its stupid to upgrade but not best choice an i used sensation which i think is same cpu as herc an it was a little slow i know it has sense which is ram hog but it had 300+

i think you are wrong... i have seen a big decline in ROMs for the Nexus... even eViL kinda forgot us and updates his ROMs every once in a while and now he is actively working on Tmo 4G ROM ported to the G2... i am startling to slowly lose faith in my Nexus...
me to...
I'm really debating it also, after watching videos of the 800mhz 2nd generation Snapdragon out-preform the Nexus One, it makes it really tempting. As far as development goes I saw 'Evil' already has some ROMS, he has ported the MyTouch4G and Desire Z ROMS. One improvement I think was forgotten was a brighter screen it appears to the same OLED screen. The keyboard and optical trackpad are a nice improvement also, messing with the optical trackpad makes me hate my trackball

You had the phone for a short amount if time. If you really want to upgrade, the G2 is the way to go. The Mytouch 4G in any other color but white is good as well, but if you want the same experience, go for the G2. The "Nexus 2" looks extremely plastic and it basically is a vibrant.

its a newer 800 mhz cpu (capable of 1.4 ghz stable). Much like the Intel Atom processors of today are 1. something Ghz, but they run faster than many 2ghz chips from 2001. Hz is just a clock speed, if the chip can do more in less time, you don't need as high of a clock speed.
If a man had 1 arm and could lift 300 lbs with it, thats pretty strong, but If i could lift 200 lbs in each of my 2 arms, i'm lifting 400 lbs in the same time. Make sense?
EDIT:
Last i saw the Gingerbread requirements were never official, and listed on a russian site and then picked up by rumor sites. The G2 is more than capable of running it. And those sites all claimed gingerbread was 3.0, which we know is not true. it is 2.3.
If you are on tzones or the $10 web2go plan then the G2 is not worth the data price hike. $10 web2go is the single best feature on the N1. The savings alone can get me a free phone every 2 years.

Good explanation, its like the old Celeron and Pentuim processors. A Celeron with a higher clock speed doesn't mean its better than a Pentium. It comes done to the architecture of chip.
Thus meaning the Qualcomm Snapdragon isant as good as their new Scropion chip.
Thnx guys for all ur replies.....so after reading all the advices.....m gonna wait more to decide.....the thing i want is development....i know nexus s will get the more of it....but between mytouch 4g and g2 which is better....i just love my nexus one and even have my name on its back... but i have this problem of getting new phones ....if i had enuf money i wud keep my nexus n buy one more phone........
Disclaimer: It's Friday, I had a few beers... if this was already said, I apologize. I didn't read the thread first.
Reason to wait:
If you use a belt holster, if you're neurotic, if you're a perfectionist, if you ride a bike and attach your phone to a messenger bag strap with something like the Body Glove case, if you use your phone in your bed before you go to sleep... wait. The Z-Hinge design kind of sucks. It's nice that it flips open so easily, but it doesn't say open or shut. I had one for a week and I returned it. Before I gave up on the G2, the T-Mobile employee let me see three brand new devices (I felt really guilty about it). It's a known issue with T-Mobile (I called and asked) but it's not technically a defect according to HTC. Either way, it's annoying. Otherwise, the phone rules. Really, it's great. It's fast, it looks good, the optical trackpad is awesome, it runs vanilla Android... but that damn Z-Hinge ruins it.
But if you were the type of kid to not constantly F with your loose tooth until it fell out, then the G2 will be fine for you.

People obviously don't read specs into their depth.
Scorpion is the CPU.
Snapdragon is a chip, that includes Scorpion CPU.
The CPU of Nexus and G2 are EXACTLY the same. Which effectively means that CPU-power-wise-only, G2 is slower. Not that it matters much.

Not only GPU. There are some architectural changes, I posted about it some time ago (LPDDR2 support, for example). Overall, it's a more balanced, refined chip. But sometimes when I see sheer power comparisons between those CPUs, with all the "new generation" and other irrelevant analogies, I can't stop myself from setting things straight. Comparing sheer power, 7x30 loses, unless it's running the same frequency as 8x50.

Side note, I'm not so sure the mali400 gpu that's in the sgs2 is anything great, unless its only running one gpu core at the moment, which means samsung will have to update it later....cough never. I want a phone with a powerful gpu and am hoping for sgx-543 or better.

For me it depends if we get the sexy thin version I keep seeing or a softer cartoonish body like the Epic. I don't want a hard keyboard or the thicker shell that comes with it. I totally agree. Samsung would have hit a homerun with the Epic had they given it some harder corners and a little more heft but if the GSII comes in some professional packaging I may seriously consider it.
The dual core processor isn't going to make it that much speedier. Sure it will let you listen to music, browse the web, and play games at the same time. But actual game performance won't be that much improved. Just as it was with PCs and multiple cores.
Not Getting the GS2 AT ALL!!
im Getting the Evo 3D
why you ask? Looks like neither will have keyboards and the Evo gets all the Dev love.
Plus 1.2 Dual core ... i don't need more than that these processors are sooo overclockable its crazy...
Also i think alot of people will never buy Samsung again so its Dev community will even be smaller....
My current Hummingbird is handling everything fine. I'd just like a more attractive form and a larger screen. I'm a fan of face tablet phones I think 4.3" is the sweet spot.

Name the era. Of course a 2010 2.1ghz is going to blow away a 2006 2.1ghz. The refinement isn't the cores, but how much the processor can do with a single clock.
2006 dual cores were no faster than 2006 single cores, except for multi-tasking.
Just as quad cores in 2009-2010 had little benefit over their dual core counterparts, unless you are doing video encoding or 3d rendering via blender or maya.

you'll barely notice the speed difference in the Evo3d or The GS2 compared to the Epic right now... but it will make a HUGE difference overall like the battery life and other thingys
Here's a preview of the international version of the Galaxy S II. The 8 megapixel camera is the best they have ever seen and can record 1080p video with full 30 fps! I hope for the Sprint version they leave out the keyboard and put in an even bigger battery (already a solid 1650mah). I'll take this over the HTC Evo 3d. 3d is such a silly gimmick.
Honorable Members,

Well, the Samsung Galaxy S2 is out already, and that is your best bet if you want something now, otherwise, you are really waiting for the HTC Sensation, but that will be substantially more expensive. Sensation is basically the DHD with upgraded specs - it looks truly exceptional. 1080p video, a screen that does better colours and uses less power and updated sense. I think that'll be the new desire in terms of popularity for the next 12-24 months.

I totally agree. Although I'm a total geek when it comes to phones as I always want the latest and greatest, I know for a fact I'm hardly going to utalize its potential. Hell, all I ever use my Desire HD for is browsing, listening to music, making phonecalls, sending texts and playing some simple games. All an upgrade can do for me at this point is offer better battery life really.
Your usage is no less than anyone else's, it's just that people get massively drawn into the spec war.
When was the last time that anyone really recorded anything 1080p on their phone, aside from it just being there to do? And who exactly is going to completely utilise a dual core processor right now? No multi-threaded apps, and Android's memory management kills off anything that is not in use...so no need for two cores. We are currently in a place where the hardware is outpacing the software by quite a way. Focus needs to be placed on improving the software in the mobile world; this is painfully clear from the rather poor performance of Sense ROMs, for example.
Not saying that the tech is bad, but right now we really don't need it. Hence why I'm waiting a couple of years before I move to a dual core phone - my DHD is enough for anybody in terms of power.

Note that it doesn't mean that you will have double performance or anything like that. Apps and the OS need to be multithreaded; written to support and use two cores. It will be a long while before this happens, so the by the time Android 3.0 comes, the second core will be used for background tasks to assist multitasking. The issue with that is that memory management in Android means that there won't be many background tasks to actually manage, as they get killed off. And...it's a phone, so you don't really do any multitasking requires a whole core for background processes. So...a bit pointless right now. It'll see its uses in the future for performance, however.
To the post above; if looks are inportant to you, do take a look around before buying, as the newer phones definitely aren't as clean design-wise. The Galaxy S could look great...it's shame about the bloody plastics.

I'll keep my dhd for now!
I'll c what the future brings, but for a few new things i wont make the step...
On mayor software enhancement i maybe will reconsider.

I know, I was just wondering how they were naming them, for instance I used to have a processor that was advertised as 4.8GHz where in fact it was actually 2 x 2.4GHz cores, That imo is how they should be named, So the LG would be advertised as 2GHz

It's a real shame, because all these phones have great hardware yet they don't have that premium feel...it unfortunately is the only reason I would buy HTC phones.

Definitely not. That is misleading, because doubling single cores doesn't equate to double performance, as you understand. In fact, in most cases it doesn't improve performance at all.

Still about looks, any phone coming that is real metal and not plastics with big engine?

The Sensation is really your only bet to be honest. HTC are the only company that is really pushing the aluminium construction right now.
Hi guys
I want to buy a new smartphone and I am thinking about samsung galaxy s i9000 because it's obviously very good phone and currently the price is very reasonable. But this phone has only 512 ram and I want for example at the same time to use web browser, skype, listen music, etc. I mean is all that ok for a phone or it will start lagging a lot? Maybe it's not worth buying it cause it's already 1 year old and phones with 2x more ram and dual core cpus comming, so maybe it's worth waiting for them to get cheaper? Or it's still very good investment for a price? (SGS2 costs like 1.7x more so too much for me)
Have a look at that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1173923
I still would recommend it, especially because it's now about 300€ and there are only a few little bugs left, which i hope will be fixed with the next update (like browser-scrolling etc.). Also battery life is very good since JVO i think.
Today I was doing a side by side comparison on my 9000 / 2.3.4 with my cousins 9003 / 2.3.3
Edit SGS from 3 / 2.3.4 vs SGS2 from craphonewhorehouse / 2.3.3
the 9003 is physically bigger, and has a physically bigger screen, and it has a dual core cpu...... but......
speaking *personally* the 9003 is a little too big, in fact the 9000 is already pushing the boundaries on size for a "phone"
the bigger screen in nice, but I know someone who uses a 7" galaxy tab as a phone, for phone / mms / email the 9000 screen is as big as I want.
dual core? well if I played games I might need it, but the single core on my 9000 does everything *I* ask it to, including playing video seamlessly.
=========================================
sweet **** all in it so far, all personal preferences...
the REAL difference is the 9000 is mature, incredibly well known, with an incredible set of resources and knowledge.
the REAL difference is not being the latest and greatest any more, the 9000 is cheaper, significantly cheaper.
I was offered a straight swap today 9000 <> 9003, I turned it down.

Thanks for opinions.
Well the main thing for me I think is RAM. Is SGS not slow when having several programs running (skype, web browser, music..)?
I only recently got an i9000 and found it really doesn't matter about its age, it performs incredibly well, and has the advantage of having a massive load of excellent custom roms to use.

Besides the the missing dual core, I think i9000 is gold for it's value. Which I might add, is running current performance standard for all phones since dual core is considered high end atm.

I9003 don't have dual core cpu it's 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, PowerVR SGX530 GPU, TI OMAP 3630 chipset
you can buy i9000 for now as it's still one of the fastest phones and next year you will be able to buy i9100 at less once galaxy s 3 comes
I'd go for a newer phone than the Galaxy S if it had a greater variety of mods/kernels. I don't think that's going to happen for a while =P
The Galaxy S II looks promising, though.
The SGS has a good balance between hardware specs and software / os requirements.
The SGS 2 doesn't have this balance. At this time, 99% of the users simply don't use that extra hardware capacity.
In my view, the decision to purchase an SGS2 vs an SGS really boils down to the screen and the camera. If you want the Full HD video recording, improved camera and better screen and you think the price premium warrants it - then go for SGS2.
But if you think the SGS is more than satisfactory in these areas, then SGS it is.
People talk about the improved hardware specs of the SGS2... but until that translates into real-life improvements "my SGS2 can do this...and your SGS can't" then we simply won't see people rushing out to buy them.
You can guy mine if you want....comes boxed with everything!
RoOSTA
Recently got one. I look at it as a mid range phone with lots of custom roms. For me, its a great phone to start off for Android due to its resources.
i've only gotten mine for about 2 months now, and it's worth it, came from a wildfire... and i must say the community here is heaps more different than the wildfire community (i enjoy it here more)... the wildfire community had some ppl that annoyed me so much and were so clueless about everything lol

you EDITED my post from "I was offered..." to "If I was offered...."
the fact that you have to make me a liar to make your point says it all.
I was offered a straight swap by my cousin, I turned it down.
Unless u got cash to burn or always wanted to have the latest gadget. If not, I would say SGS is still worth to buy.. With many custom rom.. I would say it's one of the stable android phone around.. Of cos, not the latest in terms of hardware (dual core)..

You should definitively go for the SGS.
I got mine 2 months ago, and I'm sure I'm going to still like my phone in 2 or 3 years, if it makes it through
Get the sgs, then get the sgs 2 in 18 months when its cheap (if you can handle large size) sgs is great, android apps not really able to fully exploit dual core yet

I don't really worry about dual core cpu, I worry more about rams. This phone does not have much of them and noone answered my question how laggy is phone when several programs running (skype, web browser, music player...)

This would be cool, pure rumors though. I'm already solid on getting the Rezound anyways, but, anyone with credible knowledge know exactly how a quad core would really help a phone? And tablets?

That's what I figured. And unfortunately, Rezound a month after release date for me
im really torn between rezound and galaxy nexus. I would probably root my rezound asap anyways. same with the galaxy nexus. I guess it comes down to the 1.5ghz processor vs 1.2ghz in the nexus. and the cameras....we shall see
but 4 cores....*droool*
quad core is to much for a phone IMO. tablet yes but phone..... there is no point. ITS A PHONE! if you needed that much power to make a call then there is something wrong with the phone. i feel dual cores are the most ever needed. maybe beef the ram up and and the dual core's speed to 2.0ghz and that should be the end of it.
Come on guys....does anyone really think there will be an 'end' to this? A year from now...if you don't have a quad core...you'll be old hat. Not that we will need it but, oh, you'll have to have it.

Exactly. After I get the Rezound, I'm gonna root it right away, and probably try to clock it up to around 2.0, I'll be set with this phone for the next maybe year and a half or so. Unless there's an extreme breakthrough in battery technology, I'm not getting another phone for a long time, I really don't care how many damn cores they put in it.

yeah they need to dump $$$ into R&D on the battery and making the phone last longer and not more power. soon we will only be able to run the phone for 4 hours with all the power going into it. if i wanted to use my phone as my laptop i would use my laptop. at full performance the thing only last 2 hours. i dont want my phone to be this way.
things i want to see in a phone.
longer battery. i would like18 hours of extreme use.
better camera sensors. (ie light sensors, better exposure control ect)
a 3mp front face camera. (that is more than enough)
Higher screen res
thats all i can think of. i think a 2.0 Dual core phone with 1ghz of ram maybe 2ghz one day. 2ghz rom and internal storage of 16gb.
that would make one mean phone.
The benefit of more cores is that it will save battery life while increasing performance (if done correctly) so each core should be slower but all together much more powerful and consumes much less energy.

That makes sense. Well, I'm still gonna go with the Rezound, by the time I'm due for another phone, I'm hoping batteries will be better, and there'll be a better quantity of super amoled plus screens, for HTC, not just Samsung and Motorola, and quad cores, or maybe even something higher, will be the norm. And something like, I dunno, 1080p screens. Though, I'd still only go with a 4.3 inch screen...some screens now are getting too big. Oh, and Jelly Bean will be around by then and maybe some Sense 5.0

Heck the screen on the rezound is really nice! Of has some 340 ppi with its screen which is 20 more ppi than the screen on the iPhone! Now that's a good screen!

anyone considering the Rezound read this?
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/htcs-likely-rezounding-disappointment/
I have the Inc for another year, no complaints about that... miui is keeping me happy, Hopefully Google will be pushing out some of their own hardware by then, delivering super polished devices, dual/quad/octo whatever... also, they discovered something about nanotube technology and battery life/ charging...

that strip she is holding is the batt... I donno if this will help us, but i dont care if my battery dies in 2 hours as long as it can charge in 30 seconds... also, imagine the size of the phone?

As sweet as the Rezound is spec wise if the bootloader is locked with no way to unlock and achieve S-off then it will be the Nexus for me. Regardless I plan in waiting at least a month or 2 or longer to see what happens with each and where the devs go.

yeah that's the theory anyway, since this will be one of the first 4-core phones it could totally suck horrible battery life.
I'm loving a lot of the phones that are coming out, but my INC hasn't failed me yet- and there's nothing pushing me to get anything else besides pure neediness. A few more months and I will see
maybe something tragic will happen to my INC and I'll get one of these badassery phones.
Looks like a sweet phone. Quad-core may be worth waiting for. Battery life is going to be the question though.
