after a few weeks of having my post up on CL wanting to trade an updated Gingerbread for a Froyo version of the Evo I finally got a reply.. Tomorrow I go and pick it up and I will be rooting it the minute I walk in my door. I cannot wait..
Congrats! But as always with CL postings/Listings Be sure to inspect the device and make sure everything is up to par. And make sure you check the ESN first to see if its clear. What good is a freshly rooted evo if you have no service?

Well I learned the hard way. Don't do what I did. I purchased an EVO from someone on Craig's list. The esn came back clean and the EVO was in mint condition. And the guy only wanted 125 for it. Well I purchased it and went home to activate it via the website. Well it activated , BUT, here is where I got shafted. When I went to make a test call. It came back with an automated response of "to add mins to your boost mobile account please press 2". My heart sank and the term epic fail repeated constantly in my head. But I went to the Sprint store and tried to get them to flash it back but no avail. So I called Sprint tech support and I "told" (insert sarcasm) them that I went in the Sprint store to have them do an update for my phone and that afterwards it came back to me as a boost mobile device. And since the device was activated via the esn it showed as active on my Sprint accnt. So the senior management rep apologise repeatedly and credited me 400 mins, and shipped me a refurbished Sprint EVO. And lucky me it came with 2.2. I'm happy that I tricked Sprint but at the same time I'm not because I have a feeling it will bite me in the arse one day.

Repost:
Here is what happened to me today. This is part of the letter i wrote sprint and my local news station. They will be picking this story up and broadcasting/interviewing me tomorrow. I better get something out of this and this guy is majorly screwed now.
"Here is the info that was requested about my ordeal today. I was on craigslist browsing for a new phone when i came across a brand new palm pixi for sale. I texted the person with my offer. He or she texted me back and counter offered. They then told me my personal info such as my name/address and phone i had. I asked how he knew my info and they said they worked for sprint. The issue is any sprint employee cannot access your info with out my name and pin code which i did not provide. I got upset and called sprint. I spoke to heather a customer service agent . She assured me this was fraud and could plainly see my account was accessed/bypassed by a sprint employee at 3pm today. After i gave her the persons phone number she assured me this would be handled by the fraud department/corporate and that it would be easy to track this person down.
She then reset my account passwords and pin number and transferred me to fraud. Well they are closed on the weekends so i called sprint back. I talked to a supervisor "Deborah" this time and she agreed that this was fraud but that she could not help me until i spoke to the fraud department on monday. She also said this will be dealt with swiftly and promptly as no one can access your account without approval. What scares me is the fact that this person knows my personal info, i have kids here and credit card info on the sprint account.. How many other people has he/she done this too? Is all the phones he/she sell online stolen items? Im almost ready to close my sprint account im so irate right now. I think this person should be fired/prosecuted and i should be compensated in some form. I plan on calling the better business Bureau as well next week."
Im hoping sprint really keeps their word and this goes pretty far because if customers find out about this your going to have alot of pissed off people.
This is really a WTF moment for me and my wife, the douche continues to text me not knowing he is about to get screwed royally. Im soo pissed i may cancel my account since apparently this ass doesn't need a pin to access our info.
update: i decided to not do the news interview, not worth it IMO. but i talked to the fraud/corporate security dept today and the guy is being terminated and being prosecuted for breaking protocol. sprint called it a corporate breach of security. my account has been locked until the proceedings happen and sprint will be calling me soon to ask me what they can do to keep me as a customer.
im either asking to be let out of contract and have them pay my last bill or...
asking for two new phones for me and my wife for free.
Daaaaamm like you said a big WTF, you got to be careful change all credit card info, phone number, etc
And also you got sprint in your hands so, you're are going to get lots of things from them LOL
It's good to see they took care of it quickly and didn't beat around the bush.

yeah i guess, my wife wants to go to verizon, im not sure, the prices are high there. BUT either way i win because ill get money out of it selling her blackberry and my hero.
im trying to decide on what phones to get. for my wife it will be a palm pixi, she wants a keyboard and hates android for some reason.
for me it will be a evo, epic or a new palm pre, not sure yet?

I called and complained to Verizon about the LTE upgrade and the woman was very nice and sent me a box. I just dropped my xoom off at FedEx to head in for upgrade. Maybe if you call they will do the same or I just got lucky. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up!

So what's the end result? When do you get your Xoom back?
I called and they didn't offer anything. 6 1/2 months and still nothing!!!
4g is no good for me Verizon doesn't even have it here in the part of georgia i live in..yet they have it in Atlanta..sucks...oh well. Then when i asked them when it would be available in my area they said have no idea...argh
The retention rep pretended to be out of the office when I called.
Got it back yesterday, all is good, was wiped clean, not any real changes I can see. I'm in the Tampa market and I can say Verizon 4g kicks sprints 4gs ass hard. If I could get my unlimited sprint plans on Verizon I would change today.

If this were the Moto support forums, I'd want to see pics too because it gets pretty deep over there. This site does not truck with BS artists and those things have a way of working themselves out here. I trust the OP more than the whole batch of Motoxprts combined. (They aren't all pieces of crap but they had a bit of a credibility problem for a while there. I can understand the caution, but I'm content with the OP's statement.)

"Caroline" Verizon customer service ID 2047489
Im calling BS till Pictures are shown of the upgraded device. I spoke with both Motorola and Verizon yesterday for approximately an hour each, Supervisors in customer retention et cetra, they sure were not offering to send a box to my door to ship it to moto for a upgrade (I know, I asked) spoke to "Caroline" Verizon customer service ID 2047489 and her supervisor. Try giving them a call their as clueless as the deceptive Motorola staff.
i already have a box for a different issue. You think if I send it in they will fix it and throw the lte upgrade in for the heck of it?
How about going into settings and getting a pic of u holding up ur 4g upgraded xoom. Where it shows the build and version. The reason it's hard to believe is that so many of us have called and gotten no box to ship ours out. I have called and gone to every vzw store within 150 miles. None of them have had a xoom upgraded yet. As far as I'm concerned motor can send my 2 4g cards to my door! The damn bionic is crap! Why would I trust a cheap tech to put my cards in without screwing them up?
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
As soon as I figure out how to get a pic on here I will. I just called and said I was told I was getting a box to send it in. The person didn't have a clue what I was talking about and got a supervisor that did know, she apologized and sent me a box, it was that easy. She probably wasn't suppose to do it but all Verizon employees and Verizon contractors as well as fortune 500 customers have all received the upgrade. It does exist.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
i find it interesting that verizon would offer to send you a box since, to the best of my knowledge, motorola is the one performing the upgrade?
not calling BS, just a little odd that vzw would be sending it.
I work for Verizon Wireless Corp here in Lansing Michigan as a retail sales rep. I had sent my xoom tablet in a couple of weeks ago during an Employee Only offering to test the process of upgrades to the Motorola Xoom. The whole process took about 4 days including the ordering of the box they send you. Was kinda hesitant due to the fact that I really customized alot of settings ... apps that arent avail any more..etc., So I sent it in without backing anything up (took a "Big" risk of losing my stuff), once I got it back my xoom had plastic protection on the screen , documentation of what was installed and a new build number " HLK42B ". Once I turned my device back on with fingers crossed.... all of my apps, movies, settings everything was how i left It. Was very satisfied with the care they took and notifing me along the way by email once recieved, completed , and sent from repair location. The 4G in my area is beyong what I expected. For those on the fence well worth sending it in.

Lol I'm with you on that one.
I call BS on the OP unless he's a Verizon employee, which it doesn't sound like.
Been a member on the forums since 2008 and still doesn't know how to attach a pic...lol?
Oh well, we're still waiting. I've called, gone into Stores, came out with diddly. Sent a complaint to the State Attorney General of Oregon about it to see if that expedites anything.
And the Fortune 500 Customer thing doesn't make sense to me. I'm an IBM employee, have my IBM discount, last I checked we were at #18 on the Fortune 500 list. I get no preferential treatment....weird
I still have my March 4th email promising the 4G upgrade " Coming Soon ". I don't think anyone would agree that 7 months was soon.
I just got off the phone with Motorola Support (800-734-5870). They still told me end of this month. I very politely asked him to look at the nearest calendar and tell me what date it says...these guys are idiots and MOT is a joke.
So I got my first shift on launch day. I was so excited to get away from my Moment. I got it from best buy and got the Black tie protection. I thought I got black tie in conjunction with the sprint insurance. Less than a month later, I drop the phone in the sink and take it to BB. They send it off to their repair ctr and I'm stuck with the Moment for 3 weeks before I get a new Shift. 3 weeks is a long time to wait for a phone, so I cancel the best buy insurance (thinking I still had sprint's.)
Then less than a month later, my down volume rocker stops working and i take the phone to the sprint store. Turns out, best buy canceled the sprint insurance and so not only do they not repair/replace the phone, they take pictures of the broken solder points on the volume rocker, circle them, and show me exactly where the hardware defect is that they wont fix! So I call Assurion pissed about this and get my insurance reinstated.
A couple weeks later, I take my phone to another sprint repair center and they tell me that my phone has been added to a "Do not repair" list and that they cant do anything about it. Furious again about this situation, I call sprint and they give me some crap about how the insurance didnt start til after the phone was placed on the list, so they cant fix the phone.
So I gave up. I cancelled the insurance again and just used the phone on vibrate all the time. Well, last week, my screen shattered and I was just gonna buy a new screen and fix it and the broken solder on the motherboard at one time. they wont fix it anyway right? But then my fiance suggested that I call sprint and complain again.
Well I did, and this time told them that as soon as the Nexus Prime came out, I would be leaving sprint (to whom I have been a loyal customer since 2001) for verizon and now all of a sudden, they're apologizing for the way they treated me. The rep said that they cant fix the shift because it was on the Do-not-repair list, but he could give me a brand new Epic Touch for $30 and I was still eligible for my upgrade in January.
Moral of the story is, Buy a case for your phone.
Either way you look at it, its time for an upgrade... Go with what makes you happy pal,, best of luck to you

Omg that hella sucks balls. They gave me that phone at bestbuy for a loaner while they tried to fix my hero. Then the refurb hero came in and it was stuck to a bad esn so they gave me a new shift. That sammy inter sucked worse then my hero ever did. I dont see any way in hell bb or sprint could send you an inny for a shift! This phone rocks way more socks. Well now we know why it was only $30 . sorry though thats horrible. my mother has the intercept and if she didn't need a phone i'd chunk it out the windows, skip it like a rock in the pond, and see if it would work as a speed bump for cars.
It's possibly the worst phone sprint carries "not to discourage the fun times you'll have with it"
but I would call sprint and (like everyone else said) raise hell as much as you can. hopefully you did take notes and kept track of this. and like prboy said make sure you mention Verizon that'll get em to do something.
I feel for ya, me and that phone hate each other, and even the custom roms and kernels don't help that much.
THIS GUIDE IS PURELY INFORMATIVE. HOW YOU DECIDE TO USE THIS INFORMATION DOES NOT INVOLVE ME.
I AM IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR PERSONAL MISHAPS DUE TO THIS INFORMATION. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
With that said, lets get started.
If you are one of the many sprint users that has borked 4g, or their phone in general by being a root newb, this guide is for you.
OBJECTIVE: Use your charismatic personality in order to recieve a free (or $35) Brand new (or refurbished) Evo 4G.
STEP BY STEP:
1.Unroot is absolutely VITAL for this to work. CLICK HERE FOR UNROOTING GUIDE!
2.[OPTIONAL] Keep the phone as is (widgets and wallpaper) when you install the original software onto your phone. This will benefit you in the future.
3.Locate your nearest Sprint retailer. WARNING! DO NOT GO TO A SPRINT CONTRACTOR OR TECHNICIAN STORE USE THIS LINK TO FIND YOUR LOCAL STORE!
4.Make sure you have at least 2-3 hours of free time before you actually enter the store, as with the release of the EVO LTE the store WILL be populated.
5.Enter the store and let the rep know of your phone's issue (4g being the easiest problem to replicate). He/she will most likely put you on a list and make you wait a while.
6.IMPORTANT! Act completely potato at this point. Make sure the reps understands that you are a dimwitted redneck hillbilly with absolutely no tech knowledge.
7.When you are called upon, the rep may ask you if you rooted your phone. Say "What's that?" and you are set.
8.After the rep does his stupid routine, he will probably reccomend that you go to the corporate HQ store and yadda yadda. Just say "Can't I just get a replacement?" At this point, if you do not have insurance, the rep will tell you that it will cost $35.
9.Say "Alright." and be on your merry way to a new phone.
10.??????????
11.Profit.
Be warned that this may not be the exact order that things take place for you.
-Meph, out!

Hypothetically, if you were to somehow *accidentally* lose your RSA keys... I guess you could pull it off. But this is geared more towards the people who lost them innocently through flashing radios.
Is there anything actually wrong with your evo?
If so, replicate it enough to be able to show a rep.

How is that btw? Reliable at all?
thanks...
Thanks for this, I didn't know Sprint did the $35 replacement thing. Do you have to be within the first year, or is this just a standard thing? Was thinking the 4g response may not work, as we don't have it in our area either.
The main problem with my girls' phone is the camera is borked, but it's a hardware issue...you can literally move the lens around. I don't want to go in and them claim they can't help because she dropped it or something.
Basically, my Evo had finally came to an end after heating up multiple times and basically frying the processor etc. So, what did I do? Just like anyone that has a full upgrade and has seen the Evo4GLTE and Samsung Galaxy SIII commercials. I went to Sprint in search of my new S3. I traded my OGEVO and got $60 towards my bill on the new phone. Got home, everything was perfecto! Went to sleep, worked all the next day. I get a call from my friend asking if I had talked to my uncle. I said no, why? He said, someone tried to call my grandmother, pretended to be me and told her I along with my girlfriend and my best friend got arrested in Cancun Mexico... Asked for $4100 wire transfer immediately.
Basically long story short, the day after I traded in my Evo is when this happened, a Hispanic man helped me, my family said it was a hispanic man trying to sound like me. Does it sound like the Sprint guy to anyone else? I mean, I didn't erase anything on my phone, as I should have. There were only two people I text, and the only two people in my SMS box were the two people he said I got arrested with... My grandmother in my phone is under "Nan" so its obvious that's my grandmother. I put two and two together and basically came up with this odd hunch that its the Sprint guy who is trying to scam my family. My mother filed a police report but haven't gotten a phone call from the detectives... & assuming the detectives don't have time to worry about this. I have no other choices, but to be SOL.
Leave your comments and feedback's please. I am just curious to understand what others think about this problem I am trying to deal with.
I think..uh...I don't. I got bored halfway through the story
I believe it was him what a coinsidence that the people u had on your phone were the two people he named. Id go to the store and complain about it.

It was most certainly that person, because here are the rules sprint has with turning in old phones
Sprint's policy is to erase user data from all mobile devices collected through the company's takeback programs before they are reused.
Either two things happened
A) Sprint resold that phone the same day without erasing the data which holds them accountable
B) That person you turned it into was behind the scam and stole the information and re-used it ( I hope you had his name)
C) Even if that person had nothing to do with it, this incident occurred after handing the phones to sprint, so they could be responsible.
You need to GET BACK TO THE STORE ASAP and talk to the manager about this, and tell them to contact the authorities and open up an investigation. DO NOT WAIT
That is one bizarre chain of events! :screwy:
Yeah I know. I need to go back up there tomorrow after work. It was Monday of this week that I got the phone. Tuesday when I got off work is when thIs happened. I hope I'm not too late. Yes I remember his name, Edgar! It's all his fault!

One more tip, DONT CONFRONT HIM YOURSELF!
Goto the manager and explain everything, then he will confront him
Its not too late, this guys an idiot its so easy to track his wire transfer, hes headed straight to jail!
Also if you can take your grandmother, maybe she can hear his voice and confirm its him on the scene.
Wow what a crazy story. It doesn't surprise me one bit.
I had a interesting one myself. I had to calk sprint one day an talked to a rep in Chicago.
We upgraded our rate plan which went very smooth. But my wife, usually pays pretty close attention to our bills happened to look at the account 2 days later. The rep I spoke with had activated 2 extra lines that day and sent them to herself.
It was such a HUGE ordeal to contest the new lines. But when I threatened legal responsibility for the actions taken by them, they removed them.
Do not be afraid of telling them you will take legal actions against them. I ended up completely getting out of my contract and now I'm with boost. Obviously same company but I couldn't beat their service in my area. Plus a hell of a lot cheaper bills.

Something similar happened in the Atalnta area as well so could be coincidence......
An 80-year-old woman in unincorporated Stone Mountain reported to DeKalb County police that she was scammed out of $6,500 last week.
The victim told police that on Feb. 17 around 12 p.m. she received a call from the suspect, identifying himself as Robert Wells, who said he was with the American Embassy in Barcelona, Spain.
According to the report, the victim told police that the suspect said her grandson had been in an accident and that he had some unpaid medical bills that needed to paid before he could return to the United States.
The woman told police that the suspect transferred her to the grandson; it was later determined that someone was posing as her grandson, according to the report.
