Vibrant(bi winningV3) vs EVO 3D - Vibrant General

My buddy at work just got a new evo 3d and has been telling everybody how great it is. We both have 3g coverage and 3 to 4 full bars. We tried you tube and my vibrant is playing videos in high quality while his is still buffering in regular quality. Then we tried streaming some live TV. No contest. His was lagging so bad you maybe could hear every tenth word. My EDT powered vibrant looked like a hi def TV. Yea he has gingerbread and can take 3d pictures. Ill take my vibrant anyday!!
Bi-winning V3

While the screen is still a winner, the EVO 3D has more power and once rooted and gets overclocked and custom rom it will beat the vibrant
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

I'm sure it will be a beast. But right out of the box of it can't touch my vibrant.
Bi-winning V3

Should have compared them both at stock then.

Yeah man, its not fair ...

But still its suppose to be dual core an it was really hyped but still that shows how powerful our phones are thats y im so happy with it
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App

Gotta keep in mind that evolution 3d is supposed to be beast mode phone out of the box and to get beat assuming that it was really bad by this phone thats still kinna sad I know its rooted and all but to get beat bad there's something wrong don't you guys think? I mean i would like a phone out of the box to be beast so that when it gets rooted is just unstoppable idk thats just my opinion and way of thinking.

The fact is that the EVO 3D and all other multi-core phones won't reach their potential until Ice Cream Sandwich arrives. Then again, the Nexus S will be guaranteed to get ICS as well so our Vibrant might still be up to date for quite a while, through developer support at least.

I think its also a testament on how good EDT is.
Bi-winning V3

Yeah,.. love xda & vibrant community
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk

I don't like the 3D stuff...idk, its just doesn't seem very functional yet.

I have one and tmobiles network for 3g is way better than sprints. The phone scores 1900's but I'm not sure if its only pulling off one core that's clocked at 1.2 or if its pulling off both cores. My phone (3d) is as reponsive as any ROM I used on my vibrant. Came off next gen v2 with bullet. Battery life is terrible for the most part. I think the 3D is pretty gimicky but it works and it takes good pictures I guess LOL. Wish the bootloader was unlocked though.

Epic vs shift?

My upgrade comes through on March 1st.. I've looked into each of these phones with great detail. This is what I've come up with in a nutshell. And I want everyone's professional opinion as ill be using this phone for a year or two.. thx guys and gals..(is there a girl on xda yet? ;p)
Stock pros of shift: pocket friendly, higher quality exterior, possibly more support on xda, I heart HTC.
Stock pros of epic 4g: better battery life, amoled screen, front facing camera, video card for twice the gaming potential
Both are 99.00 on Amazon with upgrade eligibility (so is the evo, but I don't need a tablet just yet, 4" is quite enough for me) .. I use sprint im not switching its cheap.. I'd rather have a steak then slightly improved cell service. I have wifi at home anyways..

My wife has a shift and I have an Epic. Her phone is more stable and her camera takes noticeably better pictures. The keyboard is also better on the shift as sometimes the keys skip on the Epic. As far as froyo is concerned it is much more stable on the Shift as well.
When on the shift section of xda I noticed a lot of people got the phone for their wives and not for themselves. They say games don't run as smoothe on the shift such as psx rom.games. and there is no phone on the market that I've layed my hands on that has a prettier screen than the epic. The colors are just plain and simply better. The phone isn't the eye catcher the epic is
I would go personally with the Epic in hopes of sprint and Samsung getting their act together and fixing the numerous bugs that are associated with it. You'll definetely have a love hate relationship with the epic but I believe in the long run you'll be better off with it.

At this point id say wait for the next round of phones as there'll be dual core options. Also, my gil has the evo and i the epic and they are about the same size overall, not too much difference.

If you can wait for the next round of phones I would, since they'll probably be out this summer. If you can't, the Epic is a good phone. I'm currently on EB 13 and I did a fresh install and then loaded all of my apps manually. There's still problems with the sport mode in the camera, Time without signal (TWS) being high unless you do the airplane mode toggle, and the camcorder being a little sluggish in low light. These aren't deal breakers for me, because I don't really use the phone for low light recordings or sport mode and I'm fine toggling the airplane mode. However, it would be nice to have this fixed. I haven't experienced any of the other bugs people have claimed, so I'm still very happy with the performance of EB 13, but I'm not holding my breath for a fix. I mainly stay on EB 13 because the battery life for me is drastically better than 2.1 and the performance is no worst than 2.1. The screen is a lot better as well.
Like I said before, I hope they fix the problems, but I wouldn't buy a phone assuming they will......
IMO, it all boils down to this..
If you want a KB, get the Epic, if you don't get the EVO
The EVO shift is simply not a high end phone, no matter how it was marketed.
It is not a matter of speed, but just a lack of to many high end features.
I would really say it boils down to you really wanting to mod it I have an epic and I've been pretty happy with having it rommed to froyo until. Although some of the hardware glitches or software do kinda get annoying. I still think it's pretty descent.
The shift I'm assuming is a descent phone as well and I heard the keyboard is way better then epic, so it really comes down to preference I really think.
Best advice I can say is go to the sprint store and play with both of them for about 30 minutes, like literally 30 minutes.
I own both. Epic has a nicer screen and is faster for games. Shift seems to be better for literally everything else.
But if you like to tweak endlessly, Epic may be more your speed.
Epic by a gazillian times. The screen is simply amazing! And the gpu screams. Along froyo with ext filesystem, it even beats the super dual core tegra Atrix phone. Trust me... Epic is hands down best. I owned a Evo and a shift. Both underperform compared to Epic.
Thanks a lot guys after reading I think I may just wait for next row of phones.. when do you think they'll come out?

The shift is something I would recommend to my grandma. though i wouldn't recommend a android phone to any tech impaired person( as my grandma is, fuuuu dont even get me started.)
From what it seems, the Shift is a less expensive/toned-down alternative to the Epic and Evo. So you're more or less comparing two differently classed phones.
Also, I love the keyboard on the epic. It's very roomy and comfortable, especially with its five rows. Plus, the Super AMOLED screen is gorgeous and a serious selling point. And regarding support on XDA, the Epic has nearly 10 times more threads and posts in each sub-forum.
I've never actually owned a Shift, but just from the numbers it seems the Epic is a much better deal, especially since they are the same price on Amazon. But waiting for Sprint's next lineup of Android phones seems like a good choice as well.

Heavy
I've had the Epic and the Evo, not the Shift tho. But I've played with the Shift for a while and one thing that surprises me is HOW HEAVY it is! For the weight difference, I'd almost just get the Epic. Regardless... if you want a billion ROM's that's hard to decipher and just really be confused most of the time, get an HTC. Tho, I will say their stock ROM's hand Samy's rear to them. The build quality on all three phones I would say are on par with each other.
The GPS on the Evo is AMAZING! I ALWAYS get a quick lock (within 5-10 seconds of opening up maps), and after 15-20 seconds, it's accurate to 3m (9 feet!), the Epic, not so much. After about 30 seconds, it'd lock, and only be accurate to 20m (60 feet!?!). As for using navigation on the phone, again, I would buy a garmin or tom-tom before I'd use the Epic's navigation.
Bottom line, yeah, if you need a phone that just works, any HTC is the way to go. BUT, the screen, size of keyboard, how good it plays games, did I mention the screen quality? are unmatched on the Epic. Hardware-wise (beyond maybe the GPS), the Epic is unbeaten.

Untrue. Stop using Quadrant and Linpack (outdated benchmarks that are optimized for Snapdragon) and you'll see that it is simply not the case.
MHz for MHz, the Qualcomm MSM SoCs are slightly more powerful than the Hummingbird, but at 800 MHz they still fall behind the 1 GHz S5PC110.

Shift is good, but the epic is on a whole other level, in terms of hardware. Stock the shift has the better software, but if your going to mod your phone with some of the awesome xda dev software.......that's where you'll see what I mean by being on a whole other level. Don't wait to long to trade your new shift in and get a real upgrade

Who cares about a camera, HTC is notorious for having crappy camera anyways. I mean its a cell phone, if you're into taking high quality pictures get a Canon D SLR or some type of professional camera lol.
yeah i would upgrade most devs are heading to the evo 3d
Depends on whether you want to root and run custom roms. The Evo 4G has a huge already established dev community. The 3D's bootloader is still locked (if I'm not mistaken) so it might be a long while and an uphill battle before we see a fully rooted 3D and custom roms.
Having said that you should consider the 4G is a year old handset. The 3D's hardware is better in every respect.
Ya I know the camera isn't everything but it would ne nice to have a good camera. Is the evos camera better than the EVO 3d?? I guess I might return my EVO and get a 3d ha

My guess is you will have to wait till it has been used for a few days by actual people to get a feel for what battery life will be. Also initial releases have always had "bad" life, updates fix it usually within a couple weeks(using thunderbolt as example). I'm sure if you left 3d off you will get much better battery and better performance, again just a guess since I dont have one....yet.

The pictures are sharper and more accurate. The camera seems to adjust well to the light levels. Overall, I am happy with it. I am no camera expect, but I do use the camera on my phones to take pictures of experiments and data in the lab. These pictures are then put on powerpoints for presentations. The evo3d is a better camera.

They must have not seen the actual phone (I played with it for about half hour).
1) The build quality is unbelievable. It is much prettier than the Evo. The camera button and the 2d/3d switch are actually very small in person, they don't stick out like a sore thumb in the pictures. The back of the phone is like an order of magnitude better than the old evo door. It feels and looks absolutely great. The buttons are very nice, but are elevated from the surface a little more than Evo's. The camera lenses/area also don't stick out like a sore thumb in the pictures - in person, the back looks absolutely fantastic. Evo3d feels a bit smaller/thinner and lighter than the Evo.
2) The device is very snappy much more so than Evo on launch or even now, but there were only a few extra apps installed compared to the factory setup. May have something to do with optimized sense for the Evo3d + 60fps native refresh rate + faster storage.
3) The 2d camera is very good. It takes a bit darker pictures than Evo's, but they are sharp and the color reproduction is excellent (unlike Evo, which often gives decent but incorrect color balance). The pictures basically looked like what you saw in real life on the display.
4) The battery life was so so . According to the graph, going from 90% to 10% in 22 hours and 1:50 hr of display on time, it seems to be on par with the Evo. Evo can do better, but of course, my Evo is optimized. Not sure how it will perform there. There were no flat areas in the graph where the phone was sleeping, so it will probably be better than the evo once the mobile always on and google talk are turned off.
5) The lcd is as good as Evo's but sharper. Kinda reminded me of the retina on iphone4. No pixelation, no overblown colors like samoled. About the same brightness as the Evo.
6) The 3d stuff is AMAZING. It took me about 30sec to figure out how to adjust my eyes for the 3d, and subsequently, I was able to adjust the eyes immediately (maybe less than 1 sec), when viewing new content. The effect itself was very convincing, and it was perfect, at least in sample photos and videos - there was no blurriness or parts of the image separating, it wasn't difficult or strenuous to keep 3d effect going - ah... perfect.
I had my doubts before, but now I'm sold. This is a true successor to the Evo.
The one thing holding back from the EVO 3D is the rooting issue so far. I know Sense 3.0 improves on the previous version, but I cannot stand Sense.
I'm aware you can also run LauncherPro and ADW or other launchers, but knowing it's still there kinda bugs me, lol.
I'm sure in a few months the phone will be unlocked and some AOSP roms will be available, but to the OP, if you like and use Sense on the EVO 4G, I'd definitely upgrade.

Nice! I might go for this one, I believe it will come with unlocked bootloader? I played around on sensation and really didn't see anything special, interface was slower than my vibrant, but programs opened quicker.. I thought the screen was pretty good, was bright, and the higher res looked good too.
Thanks for the heads up!

I will wait a week or two after it's released then read on Engadget about the many problems of the phone, and then i will decide if i get this or not.
3D on your phone? Useless in my opinion. But whatever. People will buy it.
I could care less about 3d, just want high res screen, 1 gig of ram and unlocked bootloader.

Alright so now people on a whole nother carrier can get headaches from the 3d
I had a vibrant up until last friday when the evo 3d hit, and while i was expecting the 3d to be a gimmick, it was really kinda cool. You have to kind of adjust your eyes the first few times you try it but its nice. Quads are LOW (like 1600-2300)for a dual core phone but damn does it feel snappy as ****.
I miss my vibrant and the ease of use with that it brought with the flashing and odin operation, but im excited to see what this (evo 3d) will bring for me.
Funny htc said that they were going to unlock the bootloader. yeah go to htc facebook page and it is riddled with hate and what not, then a group #teamwin was able to gain root access and is working on s-off.
battery life is trash and i am going to buy a couple spare batteries, granted i use my phone quite a bit but i would use my vibrant more and get more life then 3d stock. Granted bali uv helped with my vibrant.
guess im just saying that I really like this 3vo and i would suggest it to others looking to upgrade. If given the choice between this or sgs2 i would go sgs2 only because i like how fool proof samsung has made their devices.
Bad Drivers + 3D Phone w/ Goggles On = Epic Fail
Not a big fan of 3D after seeing Avatar on the IMAX. Biggest headache ever. I'm sure people will still buy it and then 30day returning it. I like the EVO tho, my boss has one and it still runs like a champ.

I'd stick with the Sensation over this. Basically the same phone that's not the size of a brick, slightly less RAM..not a deal breaker.

Dev Explosion

I find it funny that after the Shift has been named EOL and put on the list for not getting ICS that there seems to have been an explosion of development. It seems there is something new in the development section every day for the past two weeks. It's awesome. And I would just like to personally thank everyone who had contributed to development on the Shift... This is my first Android phone and I am amazed by the work you guys do. Thank you all four making my phone run better, faster, and more fun... Long Live The Shift!

Yeah but you and I both knoww that the processor in the shift is really 1.2 ghz. Htc and sprint had to underclock it so it wouldn't piss all over the og evo... And what's the point of a dual core? There aren't a lot of apps that utilize the second core, and if I'm not mistaken, isn't the 3d's second core pretty much used up by the gimmicky 3d? The shift went almost a year and a half before eol, the 3d is already there a mere 6 months after release. I'm hoping htc releases one last slider, with the sensation/doubleshot processor or a qualcomm s3 processor, a f.f.c., and world phone capabilities. Those are just my hopes, and since my headphone jack took a $hit on me today, it couldn't come soon enough!

Honestly man the s3 isn't much to boast about, I'm not even impressed with it at 1.5. Yeah It's dual core, but I have yet to notice that I'm even running a dual core device. My speedy will keep up and run apps just as fast as my doubleshot. Yeah I benchmark 2k better but in real world usage I still think the shift has been the most dominant device I've ever used.

It's going to be tough "replacing" the Shift once my upgrade arrives (Nov) plus the Shift Community is the best ever!!!
dual core phones are actually pretty quick but agreed the shift does compete very closely with them but the issue imo is the dual core saves a lot of battery power and the ram is the biggest thing for me most of those dual cores have a gig of ram whitch was a big deal for me..
I'm just hoping my Shift can hold out long enough for HTC to release something I'm excited about... And can afford, on Sprint... Damn it might be awhile
with a keyboard probably a while however the evo lte looks pretty nice..probably where i am swtiching but i am looking to see if we could ever get quad core in the next couple of months i always upgrade at the wrong time..
I'm not too worried about a slider, I don't think anyone is gonna make them anymore, which sucks but it is reality... We might get a quad core if Crapple quits holding up phones in customs
I have still got about a year before I can upgrade, maybe some new technology will come out so phones don't have to be 5".. I love the size of my Shift personally, I can do everything with one hand (except the hardware keyboard) and I can carry it in my pocket and still be able to bend over without fear of snapping it in half
I could give a damn about dual or quad cores... Whatever makes my phone battery last the longest with HEAVY use... I travel a lot!
I sure wish they would make another slider. The only reason I got the shift was because my touch pro 1 fell apart, I stole parts from my wife's TP (after she got an og evo) and after another year of use my TP fell apart again. I rode that ***** until the wheels fell off! I miss that phone...
Anyway, love my shift though. LOVE a keyboard. Love metal parts in my phone because I'm hard on them with all of the travel. (Not like the epic)
Yep... This shift has treated me right. Good times and bad. I still remember when I first joined this community... Haha... But my upgrade is in a few months (novish) and I love the HW keyboard. I definitely use it. but the amount of times I use it... It's not a lot. I was thinking the EVO LTE if sprints LTE network proves to be good... If not I'm considering jumping ship to Verizon.
Shifted from Outer Space
Hell the shifts 800mhz was a beast and really it was the GPU inside of it that was nice. But the 3vos s3 is a nice upgrade and runs sense 3.0 (3.6 now) way faster than even the fantastic devs here were able to do. Btw I got around to trying your kernel on the old shift drob! Wonderful job! Ran great!
But now the new evos out and smokes everything :-( lol

Damn that sucks. This is with our ICS leak for Virgin Mobile and completely stock kernel and everything
I wonder what htc is doing to the doubleshot

Also here is battery clocked at 192 min/702max ram is more but I have 768mb but honestly still there is no advantage

Can someone compare their Evo 4G to a GSIII?

I am now out of contract and thinking about moving to Verizon (for the LTE network) and the GS3.
But I'm actually pretty happy with my Evo, with roms like CM9 and MIUI its a totally new phone. So if someone has used both the phones, I'd like a little feedback about the GS3-
does it feel much faster than the Evo?
how does signal strength, gps compare to the Evo? I saw this thread - http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/443782, which doesn't give me hope for the Samsung radios
is battery life better? Currently I can get 2 days with light use on MIUI
Basically, its get the GS3 now or wait for the next Nexus phone in Dec which will have JellyBean.
I have never had the pleasure of using a GS3, but overclocking Team D.I.R.T's Remics ROM, which is based on the GS3, is a very nice substitute.

The speed difference is pretty big in my opinion. Coming from the evo, things like scrolling and going in/out of apps is a big difference. Scrolling in the browser is so nice after using the evo. I'm still holing strong with my evo too, my roommate just picked one up though and its a great choice. The galaxy nexus with JB is a good option as well. Just through a JB rom on and your good to go. I know its not exactly what you wanted but just thought I would share......
MEZOCLONE
Due to poor battery life I never used my EVO for much more than phone, email, and texts.
My S3 battery is much much better, the phone is quicker, etc etc. Having said that touchwiz takes some getting used to, the Samsung keyboard sucks(using Swype beta now). If you enjoy running alternative ROMs then start on your EVO for now. If you enjoy having new fast hardware then pick up an S3 or oneX.

Evo LTE battery is insane. 6+ hrs screen with 24+ hrs on. Wicked build, too. Unlike Sammy.

Do you have a G S III? The S III has comparable battery life and just a smidgen better than the LTE. Despite the polycarbonate body, the build quality is there. The device is smooth, solid in hand, and doesn't feel flimsy. In addition to not having an aluminum backing, it'll be less prone to signal issue, unlike I have seen with the LTE.
You cant even compare the two. Its like comparing a 1975 Cadillac Eldorado with a 2010 Nissan GT-R
All silly comparisons aside yes its WAYWAY faster GPS locks in fast and works great, and the battery is way better then my evo. I use both every day.
Evo=work
GS3=personal
Don't get me wrong, I loved my evo. I have had mine since Google IO when they gave them to us free. But come on the GS3 is current technology.

apples and oranges. my co worker has a GSII running cm9 and its stupid fast compared to my evo i can only imagine the gsiii is even better.
Picked my gs3 up today. There really is no comparison in terms of speed. Touchwiz blows hard, so I loaded up nova launcher right away.

I played around with my friends GS3 today and it is ridiculously fast and smooth. I tried overloading it with apps running in the background and it would not slow down. I will definitely pick one up for myself eventually.
I own both — just traded up
I actually on both phones. Contract on my EVO 4G just expired, and I decided to quit Sprint because the coverage just wasn't there in my neck of the woods. So I got a GS III with AT&T, and hated it for two days because it was giving me constant, nasty Wi-Fi dropouts. Then AT&T pushed out an update — which some people are avoiding because it nukes unified search, for legal reasons — but what's not getting much press is that it also solves a lot of connectivity issues. I suspect those issues were created by some kind of power saving attempt. In any case, I have LOVED the GS III ever since that update.
Unlike some other users on this thread, I really don't think that it "blows away" the EVO. But it's way faster and the screen is quite amazing. And it sounds like you're really tempted (just like I was). So let me just share my own feelings:
I'M SO GLAD I GOT THE GSIII! The Evo is still a way cool device, don't get me wrong. But the GSIII is the new world champ, and there's just no denying it. So go ahead do what you are longing to do anyhow, and nab it!
P.S. I've kept my Evo, by the way, even though it has no phone reception, and I joined xdadevelopers so I could learn how to root it and install CM9 like you did. So let me ask YOU — what thread or post should I go to first?
Check out hipkat's guide to the evo. It is in the stickies. Check out the smelkus amon ra recovery and if you go with cm9 you will want to partition your sd card with an ext4 partition. Do lots and lots of reading before you jump into all of this of course. Have fun!

You don't NEED to partition, just user preference really. Never felt like partitioning and never had a problem.

true that just seems most people do with our phones.

You talking about 2010 super phone with 2012 super phone with 2gb ram come on guys. I love my EVO and HTC sense to be honest can't compare this two if you want definitely EVO 4g LTE far away better than sgs3 . Do not make me wrong like speed test ,design, camera, kick stand and UI all this EVO 4g LTE .

I'd have to disagree about the Evo LTE being "far away better" than the GS3. My sister has one, and as much as I love the screen (it really is as good as they say), I prefer the way the GS3 feels in my hand (except that it feels a little more fragile), and the extra gig of RAM will make a huge difference when I flash MIUI on it. The camera seems to be about the same quality judging by reviews, so that's a wash. The kickstand would be nice, but even when I wanted to use it on my OG Evo, I was barely ever in a place to set my phone down. Speed-wise, I have yet to see either phone stutter or lag (except that the XDA Premium app lags on the GS3 when scrolling through threads; seems to be a problem with cached/caching images, but I never had a lag problem on my OG Evo), and they use the same SoC, so they should be about equal anyway. As for UI, I'm going to put MIUI on my S3 ASAP and would have done the same with the Evo LTE, so that doesn't matter either. Things I like better about the Evo LTE are the capacitive buttons and lack of a menu button. Not a fan of the S3's home button, especially the fact that it wakes the phone.
As for comparisons to the OG Evo, it's a different experience altogether (crazy to say since they're both Android phones), not only because of the new hardware, but also because of TouchWiz. I could compare them feature-for-feature, but we all know the S3 will win or at least tie for every spec (except HDMI, I think; a proprietary MHL adapter complicates things, but since MHL is standard now, micro-HDMI cables are harder to find and expensive). The things that impress me the most about the S3 are the speed (obviously) and the battery life. 6 hours of screen on time is normal with the S3. My Evo died around the 2.5 hour mark. It makes a huge difference.
This is off topic, but I was curious exactly how long the Evo's battery might last with no use at all, so when I got my S3, I gave my Evo one last charge and set it aside. I turned on airplane mode after a couple hours but left Wifi on (more out of habit than part of the test), then turned Wifi off after another hour or so (when I remembered it was on and draining the battery), and it's been in complete airplane mode ever since. Well, it's been 9 days and 16 hours since I took it off the charger, and I still have 50% battery left. I honestly didn't think the li'l ol' Evo had it in him, even if it is just sitting idle. I'm pleasantly surprised, but I can't help but wish the battery lasted at least a tenth as long when using the phone as it's lasting now.
I was going to switch to Verizon since I'd rather have LTE speeds for the same price, but the locked boot loader is making me think twice.
gs3 kicks real arse, how can i compare them. evo is outdated afaik.
