Care to share your sources? I haven't seen one person say the EVO 3d sucks compared to the EVO. The 3d is an upgrade on all counts. Don't see how it can suck more?

Who cares about a camera, HTC is notorious for having crappy camera anyways. I mean its a cell phone, if you're into taking high quality pictures get a Canon D SLR or some type of professional camera lol.
yeah i would upgrade most devs are heading to the evo 3d
Depends on whether you want to root and run custom roms. The Evo 4G has a huge already established dev community. The 3D's bootloader is still locked (if I'm not mistaken) so it might be a long while and an uphill battle before we see a fully rooted 3D and custom roms.
Having said that you should consider the 4G is a year old handset. The 3D's hardware is better in every respect.
Ya I know the camera isn't everything but it would ne nice to have a good camera. Is the evos camera better than the EVO 3d?? I guess I might return my EVO and get a 3d ha

Well in the review he said it lasted him all day with a lot of use. It has a great battery manager

I have the 3d, the battery life is much better. Everything seems better about the phone, including reception and etc.
The screen is a knockout, it is blazing fast, and the 3d is actually quite good (coming from someone who doesn't really care about 3d).

My guess is you will have to wait till it has been used for a few days by actual people to get a feel for what battery life will be. Also initial releases have always had "bad" life, updates fix it usually within a couple weeks(using thunderbolt as example). I'm sure if you left 3d off you will get much better battery and better performance, again just a guess since I dont have one....yet.

Are you crazy? Just get it. You have 30 days anyway to try it out and if you don't like it, return it. The 3D is a definite upgrade to the Evo. I love my Evo but definitely getting the Evo 3D tomorrow at 9am.
I own a very well modified EVO...I will not be getting rid of my phone anytime soon...that is unless someone wants to trade an EVO 3D for my EVO....lmao the 3D is an upgrade, haters gonna hate. Ballers gonna ball.

The pictures are sharper and more accurate. The camera seems to adjust well to the light levels. Overall, I am happy with it. I am no camera expect, but I do use the camera on my phones to take pictures of experiments and data in the lab. These pictures are then put on powerpoints for presentations. The evo3d is a better camera.

They must have not seen the actual phone (I played with it for about half hour).
1) The build quality is unbelievable. It is much prettier than the Evo. The camera button and the 2d/3d switch are actually very small in person, they don't stick out like a sore thumb in the pictures. The back of the phone is like an order of magnitude better than the old evo door. It feels and looks absolutely great. The buttons are very nice, but are elevated from the surface a little more than Evo's. The camera lenses/area also don't stick out like a sore thumb in the pictures - in person, the back looks absolutely fantastic. Evo3d feels a bit smaller/thinner and lighter than the Evo.
2) The device is very snappy much more so than Evo on launch or even now, but there were only a few extra apps installed compared to the factory setup. May have something to do with optimized sense for the Evo3d + 60fps native refresh rate + faster storage.
3) The 2d camera is very good. It takes a bit darker pictures than Evo's, but they are sharp and the color reproduction is excellent (unlike Evo, which often gives decent but incorrect color balance). The pictures basically looked like what you saw in real life on the display.
4) The battery life was so so . According to the graph, going from 90% to 10% in 22 hours and 1:50 hr of display on time, it seems to be on par with the Evo. Evo can do better, but of course, my Evo is optimized. Not sure how it will perform there. There were no flat areas in the graph where the phone was sleeping, so it will probably be better than the evo once the mobile always on and google talk are turned off.
5) The lcd is as good as Evo's but sharper. Kinda reminded me of the retina on iphone4. No pixelation, no overblown colors like samoled. About the same brightness as the Evo.
6) The 3d stuff is AMAZING. It took me about 30sec to figure out how to adjust my eyes for the 3d, and subsequently, I was able to adjust the eyes immediately (maybe less than 1 sec), when viewing new content. The effect itself was very convincing, and it was perfect, at least in sample photos and videos - there was no blurriness or parts of the image separating, it wasn't difficult or strenuous to keep 3d effect going - ah... perfect.
I had my doubts before, but now I'm sold. This is a true successor to the Evo.
The one thing holding back from the EVO 3D is the rooting issue so far. I know Sense 3.0 improves on the previous version, but I cannot stand Sense.
I'm aware you can also run LauncherPro and ADW or other launchers, but knowing it's still there kinda bugs me, lol.
I'm sure in a few months the phone will be unlocked and some AOSP roms will be available, but to the OP, if you like and use Sense on the EVO 4G, I'd definitely upgrade.

I just want to know if you are happy about giving up your Evo and getting the Epic or if you regret the switch? Also please tell of any other experiences you've had with it so far
Yes. I still miss Sense sometimes but I calmed that itch with launcherpro full and fancy widget. It doesn't give you the full sense experience with core apps modified but its good enough for me. Hardware is amazing compared to the evo
Better screen
Better camera
Better hd video recording
Cpu/gpu amazing!!!!
I thought I was not gonna like the keyboard but it was so useful for my university classes (I even coded some c++ homework assignments on the epic and ran it on my schools computer)
Gps is still a downer... it works but unreliable
Overall, I don't regret the switch
Yes, but I miss the 4G speeds I had on my EVO and HDMI. Had more resources with HTC dev team too.
I was one of the people that got the HTC EVO 4G on the day it was released... man was that a big mistake. Honestly, it was one of the worst phones I've ever used. I hated the build quality, it was super flaky. I actually went through 2 EVOs within my first two weeks or so because the USB port stopped charging.
Of course, yeah at first when I got the EVO I thought it was cool and all but the coolness wore off pretty quickly when I started to see all the many flaws it had, to name a few, the FPS cap (FINALLY fixed), build quality, very laggy with HTC Sense UI, things like that. I eventually took the phone back because I actually paid full price so that I wouldn't use up my upgrade and it definitely wasn't worth wasting my money on. After having an EVO, I really started to look down on HTC. They used to be the only brand of Android phone I would ever get, but now I won't touch them ever again. I went back to my HTC Hero and after that went semi-bad I traded it in for a Samsung Moment just to not deal with HTC anymore.
Once I heard about the Epic 4G I was stoked, I thought this phone is gonna beat the **** outta the EVO... I was right, I am so glad I switched! The only thing I wasn't looking forward to with the Epic was having a built in keyboard and I rarely ever use it, ever, but I guess its still nice to have on occasion. Don't believe when people say, "If you want a hardware keyboard, get the Epic, if you don't get the EVO...", I didn't want a hardware keyboard but I still got the Epic just because the hardware overall is much much better!
Anyways, sorry for the long post but yeah, I switched from the EVO and I will never look back.
Still have the EVO but it sits on the shelf now. I haven't looked back either. Screen is so much bigger on the EVo, but camera and video capture is so bad on the EVo The keyboard is nice though I don't use it at times. Epic very satisfied
I just made the switch and don't regret it one bit. When this phone gets froyo it is going to smoke the evo. With baked rom this phone is amazing compared to evo.
I have not used my keyboard once yet but it will be nice with snesoid and etc.
Overall very happy with my switch.

Yes. Epic currently has an upload speed capped at 150 kbps. I have an evo and an epic right here and I just did a speed test on both.
Evo: 1570/646
Epic: 1404/116
Other than that, I generally prefer the epic. Less laggy, even after the evo's 30 fps cap fix. Better gpu. Screen is slightly smaller but less washed out. I don't even use the keyboard for typing usually but it's great for games. The only other things better about the evo are community and vendor support. And the kickstand of course.

I'm more than satisfied with the Epic. I had the Evo for 29 days, so I got a good impression of the device and its faults.
The smooth responsiveness of the Epic is great compared to the Evo, which was laggy at often choppy (using menus, scrolling apps list etc). The Evo had touch response lag also, the Epic does not.
The screen on the Epic is also a nice improvement over the Evo. Being .3" smaller is worth the brilliant colors and black blacks of Super AMOLED goodness.
Gaming on the Epic is also far better than the Evo, everything just runs smoothly, and it's responsive. The Evo always felt like it was struggling in 3D games, and the touch input lag made some games un-enjoyable.
Having the keyboard is not a major deal for me, but it's nice that it's there for certain situations. I use Swype most of the time.
Battery life is better also.
The Epic has its faults too, but to me, they are less egregious than the Evos.

try a different kernel.
My Epic easily lasts me all day long.... but for those times when I'm doing heavy duty movie watching or game playing, I keep a spare battery handy. Small and easy to carry around.
It definitely lasts longer than the EVO's did, even with a different kernel.
So far I'm much happier with the Epic than I was with the EVO....... but I'm a speed freak and the EVO's processor was just too outdated for me.

Why are questioning what he said about battery life? Are disappointed that he said the battery life is better? You seem to really not like the EPIC. So take it back. Why do you keep the phone? Are you here just trolling to be negative or are you here to contribute to the community?
I got the evo on release day. It was my first smart phone. I thought it was bad ass. I dropped it in the toilet and then my problems started. I called sprint to issue an insurance claim. I told them I lost it. They told me I didn't have insurance on the phone. After fighting with them for a a week about it they told me they if I signed I new 2 year contract I cab get another evo as I upgraded again. They also credited my account 150. I couldn't find another evo any where. Then I found out bout the epic. I haven't looked back yet.

I got my evo on 6/12, just picked up my epic 9/25. It was long enough for me to realize that while the evo is quite baller, especilly coming from the G1, it was undercooked.
We all know the problems it had/has. The one that gets me the most though is having all that power and still having to cap the framerate. That, and the insane compression of mms images, but that's a sense issue.
So far I'm REAL ****ing happy with it. I really missed a good hw keyboard. The screen and camera are mighty impressive and touchwhiz isn't nearly as offensive/intrusive as sense (its more like a theme imo) when you get adw on it.
This thing is going to set the standard once it receives 2.2.

Let us know if you get 4G on the way down.
My upgrade comes through on March 1st.. I've looked into each of these phones with great detail. This is what I've come up with in a nutshell. And I want everyone's professional opinion as ill be using this phone for a year or two.. thx guys and gals..(is there a girl on xda yet? ;p)
Stock pros of shift: pocket friendly, higher quality exterior, possibly more support on xda, I heart HTC.
Stock pros of epic 4g: better battery life, amoled screen, front facing camera, video card for twice the gaming potential
Both are 99.00 on Amazon with upgrade eligibility (so is the evo, but I don't need a tablet just yet, 4" is quite enough for me) .. I use sprint im not switching its cheap.. I'd rather have a steak then slightly improved cell service. I have wifi at home anyways..

My wife has a shift and I have an Epic. Her phone is more stable and her camera takes noticeably better pictures. The keyboard is also better on the shift as sometimes the keys skip on the Epic. As far as froyo is concerned it is much more stable on the Shift as well.
When on the shift section of xda I noticed a lot of people got the phone for their wives and not for themselves. They say games don't run as smoothe on the shift such as psx rom.games. and there is no phone on the market that I've layed my hands on that has a prettier screen than the epic. The colors are just plain and simply better. The phone isn't the eye catcher the epic is
I would go personally with the Epic in hopes of sprint and Samsung getting their act together and fixing the numerous bugs that are associated with it. You'll definetely have a love hate relationship with the epic but I believe in the long run you'll be better off with it.

If you can wait for the next round of phones I would, since they'll probably be out this summer. If you can't, the Epic is a good phone. I'm currently on EB 13 and I did a fresh install and then loaded all of my apps manually. There's still problems with the sport mode in the camera, Time without signal (TWS) being high unless you do the airplane mode toggle, and the camcorder being a little sluggish in low light. These aren't deal breakers for me, because I don't really use the phone for low light recordings or sport mode and I'm fine toggling the airplane mode. However, it would be nice to have this fixed. I haven't experienced any of the other bugs people have claimed, so I'm still very happy with the performance of EB 13, but I'm not holding my breath for a fix. I mainly stay on EB 13 because the battery life for me is drastically better than 2.1 and the performance is no worst than 2.1. The screen is a lot better as well.
Like I said before, I hope they fix the problems, but I wouldn't buy a phone assuming they will......
IMO, it all boils down to this..
If you want a KB, get the Epic, if you don't get the EVO
The EVO shift is simply not a high end phone, no matter how it was marketed.
It is not a matter of speed, but just a lack of to many high end features.
I would really say it boils down to you really wanting to mod it I have an epic and I've been pretty happy with having it rommed to froyo until. Although some of the hardware glitches or software do kinda get annoying. I still think it's pretty descent.
The shift I'm assuming is a descent phone as well and I heard the keyboard is way better then epic, so it really comes down to preference I really think.
Best advice I can say is go to the sprint store and play with both of them for about 30 minutes, like literally 30 minutes.
I own both. Epic has a nicer screen and is faster for games. Shift seems to be better for literally everything else.
But if you like to tweak endlessly, Epic may be more your speed.
Epic by a gazillian times. The screen is simply amazing! And the gpu screams. Along froyo with ext filesystem, it even beats the super dual core tegra Atrix phone. Trust me... Epic is hands down best. I owned a Evo and a shift. Both underperform compared to Epic.
Thanks a lot guys after reading I think I may just wait for next row of phones.. when do you think they'll come out?

The shift is something I would recommend to my grandma. though i wouldn't recommend a android phone to any tech impaired person( as my grandma is, fuuuu dont even get me started.)
From what it seems, the Shift is a less expensive/toned-down alternative to the Epic and Evo. So you're more or less comparing two differently classed phones.
Also, I love the keyboard on the epic. It's very roomy and comfortable, especially with its five rows. Plus, the Super AMOLED screen is gorgeous and a serious selling point. And regarding support on XDA, the Epic has nearly 10 times more threads and posts in each sub-forum.
I've never actually owned a Shift, but just from the numbers it seems the Epic is a much better deal, especially since they are the same price on Amazon. But waiting for Sprint's next lineup of Android phones seems like a good choice as well.

Heavy
I've had the Epic and the Evo, not the Shift tho. But I've played with the Shift for a while and one thing that surprises me is HOW HEAVY it is! For the weight difference, I'd almost just get the Epic. Regardless... if you want a billion ROM's that's hard to decipher and just really be confused most of the time, get an HTC. Tho, I will say their stock ROM's hand Samy's rear to them. The build quality on all three phones I would say are on par with each other.
The GPS on the Evo is AMAZING! I ALWAYS get a quick lock (within 5-10 seconds of opening up maps), and after 15-20 seconds, it's accurate to 3m (9 feet!), the Epic, not so much. After about 30 seconds, it'd lock, and only be accurate to 20m (60 feet!?!). As for using navigation on the phone, again, I would buy a garmin or tom-tom before I'd use the Epic's navigation.
Bottom line, yeah, if you need a phone that just works, any HTC is the way to go. BUT, the screen, size of keyboard, how good it plays games, did I mention the screen quality? are unmatched on the Epic. Hardware-wise (beyond maybe the GPS), the Epic is unbeaten.

Untrue. Stop using Quadrant and Linpack (outdated benchmarks that are optimized for Snapdragon) and you'll see that it is simply not the case.
MHz for MHz, the Qualcomm MSM SoCs are slightly more powerful than the Hummingbird, but at 800 MHz they still fall behind the 1 GHz S5PC110.

Shift is good, but the epic is on a whole other level, in terms of hardware. Stock the shift has the better software, but if your going to mod your phone with some of the awesome xda dev software.......that's where you'll see what I mean by being on a whole other level. Don't wait to long to trade your new shift in and get a real upgrade
Wanted to start by saying, I love my Evo. Especially the last 5 months with figuring out how to put new roms. I was dead set on the Evo 3D, but that fact is, I don't care about 3D and downgrading the camera to 5meg from 8meg sucks. Plus, the possibility of a locked down boot loader, really has me thinking twice. What do you think?
Samsung has nice top of the line phones, but have little to no support after you buy. HTC is where its at, that's my 2cents
I want to add that just because the camera is going from 8mp to 5mp does not mean that it will be worse. I had an old Samsung Behold on T-Mobile with a 5mp camera which took much clearer, sharper and better pictures than my Evo. Now saying that, normally Samsung has better screens and camera's than HTC, but HTC makes better phones IMO and also has much better support when it comes to upgrades to the latest Android. Spec wise it looks like these phones will be very similar except the 3D part of the EVO 3D. Also, 3D can easily be turned off and will still have a beautiful screen in 2D mode. I personally would go with HTC over Samsung, but honestly that Galaxy S2 sounds like a sweet ass phone. This is all opinion and you are in an EVO forum so most everyone is going to be all HTC. You might also think about posting this thread in the Epic forum as well, but they will probably all be Samsung fanboys.
I was dead set on getting the EVO 3D until the annual upgrade got reduced to just $75. Now seeing the S2 and the Sensation, it's probably cheaper for me to jump ship for a new phone.
I may just end up keeping my Evo for awhile longer. I like having new tech toys to play with but the Evo is holding my interest way longer than I thought it would when I got the phone last summer.
I do agree with you about the support, but, don't be surprised if they start to change because of carrier pressure.
Evo 3D
EVO 3D is going to be the way to go. Samsung never has good development for their Galaxy phones.
Yeah, the phone is going to be hot. I just hope HTC keeps doing right by us.

I admit, the GS2 had me tempted, but I keep reminding myself what solid phone the Evo is. I also owned the Touch Pro, and that was great phone for its time as well.
I too debated with this decision but I decided to go ahead and preorder an EVO 3D. I have some concerns that the GS2 on Sprint will have a HW keyboard, something I am not interested in, but everything else about the phone I think is great, in fact I think the GS2 would be a good candidate for the next Nexus phone. The Super AMOLED+ screen on the GS2 will offer superior battery life to the EVO and even with the lower resolution will probably look a little better...
I agree with the arguments about development, but I think that if the EVO 3D has an encrypted bootloader and the GS2 releases in a bar form with only a locked bootloader, then there may be a shift in development towards the GS2.
My plan is this: Get the EVO 3D, if the bootloader is encrypted then I will return it and wait for a GS2 announcement or get a nexus S.
I'm waiting for another phone.

I hear you. I have to make that decision. My plan is to get. If the bootloader is locked, i will sell it and get the GS2. I have become addicted to flashing, and i can't see myself with a phone i can't tweak to my desire at a whim.

Sprint, or is another carrier an option. Sprint had been light on handset choices recently. Hopefully that will change. I really liked the Sensation, but would never go to T-Mobile. I hope there are more choices later this year.
Dan Hesse mentioned 22 4G devices at CTIA. I can maybe come up with 8. Anybody know what he was referring to?

Please don't ever ever ever make a decision on a phone based on the number of megapixels in a cell phone camera.
My iPod touch camera takes better pictures than my Evo. Megapixels mean ****.

My Evo takes great pics. And funny, i heard the camera on the iPod touch sucks. But i hear what you're saying.

i think a lot of people out there think their cell phone camera sucks, but they also forget to wipe off the pocket lint and finger goo that accumulates on the lens.
The iPhone camera is better than the Evo and it's less megapixel. Tge shutter speed on the iphone us much faster than the Evo and it focuses faster. I've had amazing pictures come out with the iPhone. I'm pretty sure tge same can be said with the touch. I believe the lens on the i devices are better except for the iPad 2 camera sucking gnome ass.

Funny how you don't think a smartphone camera is important until you realize you leave your point and shoot at home all the time. Its a big deal.

I was just thinking if or when we get a fully functional E3d rom and it runs good on our EVO's I don't see me being in a rush to grab the upgrade... for what 3d pics? Meh. I might just save my upgrade for what Q3/Q4 will have to offer, if anything.

I was also considering that. That also makes sense, since i have been following the ports threads. These guys are amazing at what they have been able to do with the Evo. Thanks for that perspective.

Do not submit an answer if you have already answered in another forum in which i have posted. Just curious about the numbers
The hardware is nice and all but I don't care at all for the 3D features and I haven't even owned my Shift that long.
Doesnt look all that awesome to me. For one thing I dont understand why the Iphone camera takes twice as good of photos as any HTC phone. Also, to me the phone kinda looks ugly. I'm gonna wait and see what other phones come out in the next year or so. I just wish sprint got more of a variety of HTC phones like T-mobile etc.

ya i'd definitely prefer the sensation, WAYYYY better camera. I have a really good deal on sprint right now so evo 3d for me
I agree the Evo 3D is an ugly device. The 3D feature, to me, is just a gimmick and doesn't really improve functionality. Hardware sounds nice minus the two ugly cameras on the back.
Samsung has a horrible track record, but the Galaxy S 2 Variants are really tempting.
I am getting mine tomorrow. Sadly my Shift just cant handle some of the intense CPU tasks I need it to handle. It was a good ride though fellas, thanks for all the good times and ROMs.
opted out of the ns4g 30 day window for the gf and got her the 3d. the 3d may be a gimmick, but I guarantee you will play with that feature a ton...its very cool. Other than that the phone is fast, almost as fast as my rooted shift with shiftdeck rom (benchmark of 2650 or so)
I considered the E3D for about 5 seconds, then I remembered how much I love my Shift. E3D has nice hardware, but not a significant increase of performance to warrant trading up.

Evo SHIFT 3D?
I just played with my coworker's Evo3D - decent device and the 3D is quite a bit cooler than I expected, honestly. Our phone, the Shift, is not exactly small / skinny, but the 3D is downright chunky.
Nice hardware, but I'm totally satisfied with my Shift.

traded the gf's ns4g in before her 30days were up on the 3d. Its definitely not gimmicky and is pretty damn fast. My rooted oc'd shift barely beats it in the benchmarks i've tried. Its bigger than the shift but not as fat. I bought the shift over the evo4g because I pocket carry and wear dress pants all day. When my 12 months is up(end of the year) the 3d is the front runner for a new phone.
Okay so not meaning the spam the threads with another Evo 3D vs 4G. However, hopefully this will encourage or discourage or at least assist some people in making their minds up if they want to go with the 3D or not. I recently (yesterday) got the 3D and I absolutely love it. Camera is great, the screen is beautiful, and sense 3.0 is amazing. The 3D feature..well....I think the best part of it is watching 3D videos on YouTube and playing 3D games. Shooting in 3D takes some practice, and stillness..so I'll get back to you on that one. Speaker quality is fine, though the OG Evo does get a little louder. And yes...I do miss the kickstand. Here's a video for the full comparison.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bc4yf_lJ260
Also...the frame rate is much better as noted in the video..the graphics test was much smoother on the EVO. Lastly, the camcorder audio was also much better.
So hopefully this helps anyone. Honestly, I still think the OG Evo is one of a kind, and I think the 3D is also a great brother to it.
Interesting video. I'm not much of a fun of the 3D. The Samsung Galaxy S II seems like a better upgrade to me (Samsung Within when it comes to Sprint), especially if it gets good developer support.
Yeah the Samsung galaxy II is probably the best device out there lol
Lol, oh btw..I'm still anxiously waiting to see the Nexus Prime, that may become the top device for a while.
Nice video
Thanks allot for this video. I'm still happy with my free HTC EVO 4G.
